Don't mistake "That Other Game's" faults as "dumbing down" for "the lowest common denominator." It does run on a (now) outdated engine, yes, however it's managed to be fairly successful doing so. It's also worth mentioning that most current games run using DirectX or something of equal value.
And, as a side note, using a blatantly condescending attitude (such as in your post) makes you sound a LOT like the ego-driven elitist from "That Other Game." I'm not sure thats a comparison you want to present.

After reading the other, more constructive, replies (thank you for those), and looking at the PassMark site Mandu linked, I can only come to the conclusion that the issue is my card. I'm surprised but not too horribly upset considering the cost of the computer over-all. I guess you get what you pay for.

It's actually a desktop. What strikes me as odd is that this is (believe it or not) an upgrade over the last computer, which did run CoH. This computer currently runs WoW fine.

I'm just returning to CoH after a lengthy hiatus. In my absence I purchased a new computer with a slightly better graphics card.

    Now here is the issue:

    1. At character creation I don't see any model.
    2. At character select I don't see any models.
    3. If I log in, I can see the various sections of the UI, however the rest of the screen (the character, the city-scape, ect) are all black.

I'm currently using an ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 Series, which is no longer being updated.
  4. I am aware of the purchase limit as it pertains to security. But it's been well over 24 hours since my last purchase and I am STILL receiving a notice telling me I've reached my "on-line serial code" purchase limit.

What exactly is the duration of this limit that after 24 hours I'm still not allowed to purchase something?

EDIT: I finally found the exact purchase amount. However it was not found in the "knowledge base," rather account information. Ironicly I have NOT hit the limit yet, but the purchase I want to make will push me over.
  5. I'm having an issue in which CoH keeps crashing during Character Creation. Typically this occurs near the end, when I click on "enter tutorial," however it has happened at other sections. The crash is always joined by a report box telling me the problem lies in the "igldev.dll"

As a side note it just took me two tries and over an hour to create a single character. The game crashed each time...the first of which was near the end and caused me to lose all creation data. The Second time was when I clicked to enter the tutorial.
  6. No the website was displaying fine as far as I can tell.
  7. Yesterday I made several attempts at prepurchasing the GR expansion. Each and every time I received this response: "We're sorry, but we are unable to accept your order at this time. Please try again later or tomorrow. If you continue to have problems, you may wish to visit one of our retail partners." (Note that the "retail partners" link takes me back to the same page I just tried to purchase from.)

Following the instructions I waited until this morning and received the same exact message. To further complicate things I was allowed to purchase the "Mutants" booster earlier this evening, but when I tried to purchase the "Martial Arts" booster I, again, received a message saying my order could not be accepted?
