Since then the blaster's forum has upheld the belief that the devs don't play blasters, atleast not past 10.

    LOL Nice!

    *ahem*

In the spirit of assuming that this thread will be read years down the line...

Back in the day (I.E. at the time of the posting of this thread), Swift, Quickness, and Lightning Reflexes did NOT buff Flight Speed. After Enhancement Diversification (which I'm sure you've read about), it was difficult to reach the Flight SPeed cap on your own. At the time of the creating of this post, the patch for Swift, Quickness, and LR is still on the Test Server.
First off, this post, writing the changes coming down at the time this post was written, August 2006, was a masterstroke.

I will be a two year vet the first week of May 2010. Only in the last couple of months have I been investigating these forums. I love the lore and the story of the game and the stories behind the stories of the game. This post has done exactly what the OP intended, four years later. It allows some reminiscing for older vets while showing us "newer vets" way back when how it was when you guys walked 5 miles in the bitter snow just to buy an inspiration.

Reciently, I have seen more of these throwback topics, how things were. I still learn something new each time a new one is started. I get to know the "game celebrities" of the past and fresh new takes on the personalities of today (Posi couldn't find the door in Bricks, how rich!).

Today is I17 +1 day. Three months prior to legally having Vill ATs in Atlas, quite the novelty back in the day. We can shoot things using a pair of guns and summon demons to perform at our beckond call. Peacebringers and Warshades unleashed at Level 20, as well as their Arachnos counterparts. Perhaps you'll share with your great-grand recruits when you actually had to hunt in the market for the salvage you needed for your recipies or how you actually had to trust someone to hold some of your money while you alt to a toon that needs it.

"You kids have it great with your graphics! I remember when I faught Lord Recluse and he was covered in pixels!"

I'd like to see this thread continue, adding more of the "Silver Age" content of CoX. Like, "...on my first ITF...", or "...remember what the cape mission was like before they opened the time capsule...". Hell, someone four years from now might be surprised to learn the Positron Task Force used to be worth 66 Merits. And Posi didn't send you to Faultline. Or Overbrook, if it isn't totally rebuilt by then.

Think about last week or last month or today. Tell us something you thought was cool. It may not be a big deal now, but sometime soon, when they change some other part of the game, someone will read this thread and think, "Wow...

...this game must of sucked back then. No way I would play this without my 'I win' button."
  2. Apparently they of them who look down upon our tiny village of heroes are gonna drop some cake or some sort of annniversary delight on us Tuesday, April 27, from 7-10 PM EDT. Since I didn't see anything here yet, I hafta ask, will the Raid will be skipped on Tuesday?

If anyone doesn't know what I'm talking about, head over to the cityofheroes.com site. I'd link ya but I don't know how to pull it off on these forums.

And, hey, I17 on Wednesday. How's that gonna mess with the Wed-Hami? Everyone gonna be pounding out the new Posi TF?

As a Guard-Noob (I prefer "Protector Reject", infers I actually tried and was rejected), not sure how you guys handle dev/event interference of your regularly scheduled stuff.

    Hello Guardian

    A little update.

Wednesday, most of us moved a toon or 2 over here to Guardian. We established our SG, S.T.E.E.L. @Wise Woman is the SG Leader. We all rolled some new toons and been hanging out in Noobishburg (Atlas, Hollows, Kings). Friday night is our weekly "Friday Night in the Rogue Isles". Our VG has been established, S.T.E.A.L.

I can't speak for everybody else, but I know I'll have my 50 blaster, Steelbow, in the Warzone on Tuesday. A quality "Rain of Arrows" always helps the Vanguard Merits trickle in. Haven't decided on tonight's run. I'll let fatigue be the deciding factor.

And as a side note, since I have been getting the question alot, and since I revealed my secret identity as a mailman, I'll let you guys in on what I know. Congress has pushed back the idea of eliminating Saturday delivery for this budget year. I know, I know, you don't want any bills. Neither do I, but when you pay yours, the billing company can afford postage. Then I get paid. So get more credit cards! We need your postage!
  4. Started reading the thread and figured why not add my 2 cents.

My first controller was an Earth/Kin. Named him Pillar of Peace. Instantly you recognize that he is a concept toon. I do no damage. Well, no real damage. I don't even use the Earth Epic. PoPpy is a team toon.

Now when it comes to "Kin is better for melee" conversations, I won't lie, it is. That is, if I was concerned about picking up damage buffs. The way I see it, those that wanna be up there in the action, ya better get in there, FS is firing off. Blasters, Offenders that prefer to stay back, get close. Siphon Power is gonna be firing off in just a sec.

Once I have all my team damage dealers happy, I can get back to the job I have already started, keeping our enemies nice and tightly packed.

PoPpy taught me how to use a controller. I'm still learning. I take things I read here and apply them in game through PoPpy. I could roll a fire/kin or some other soloing combo, but when I'm trolling, I like being the unsung hero. I love it when the scrapper goes on about "I hit X guys and man, I did Y damage and I am awesome!" All the while I know he wouldn't be bragging if I didn't FS his booty while dropping defense so he could actually hit the guys.

For the original poster, I say you need to think about what you want to do. There really are alot of options. My earth/kin is hella fun, but teaming constantly/standing back and letting the scrapper get all the glory may not be your thing. Or hell, you could be up there pounding out as much damage as you can, if you design your earth/kin like that. Think out what you want, then lay out your concept. And always run the respec trials, cause wouldn't you hate to run your concept, think it sucks, and abandon all that work you did?
  5. Global is @Sterling Steel

Spent almost two years on Protector, moved my currently active 50 over here to Guardian, dropped the Sterling, he goes by Steelbow now. Rolled a Stone/Dark Tank modeled after my Earth/Kin, Pillar of Peace and gave him Pillar's nickname, Big Poppy. And my only other "Guardian" is a Kin/DP toon that I called my wife to reserve the name from my mail route (yes I am a Mailman). Turns out that name is still available on every server. She is called Speeding Bullets.

As well as all the stuff said above I often host GM raids that generaly go untill we can go no longer! We mostly fight them for fun since the xp isn't great and we already have the badges but it is great teambuliding and it helps people get a feel for their characters if your interested Ill see if I can get one started up for you since they aren't regular just tell* me @Pheonix Feather sadly I'm a weekend only kinda guy so only expect me then and feel free to ask any member of the werewolves for help just tell them Garj sent you (even though it isn't nessesary)

Back on Protector, I ran a twice-a-year GM Hunt for the SG and Coals and anyone else in zone that wanted to jump on the team. We also have rolled some Scorched Earth ITFs, Respec Saturday Night (each of the 3 Respec Trials starting at 8, 930 and 11PM EDT), Freedom Phalanx TF Week, The first "Raw is Warburg" (we arent much for PvPing. This was a "Royal Rumble" style, hide if you can, hunt if you must, team if you trust, winner take all furious fatal fun free-for-all), and the infamous S***-Faced Saturday Night. We love playing any kind of unusual event.

There are at least 12 that I can count coming over. Some of us will drag over a 50 or two. Everyone is creating new toons to get that "fresh-faced Noob" feeling again. The bulk of us are active in the evenings EDT. We have a couple of "West Coasties", an Australian who doesn't sleep if there is cold beer in the 'fridge and a Euro who won't sleep until the riots come back down his street and knock out his internet...again. And best of all, we are just here to play the game.

And at some point, since I will be visiting these forums more often, I'll craft me up an avatar and a signature. Maybe I should get one of them there "Facey Books". Wonder if I can get one down at the book store...

    Hello Guardian

Hola Guardian. I'm one of Wise Woman's crew.

This has been the most pleasant, open servers we have visited. I rolled a couple of toons today, and both recieved team invites right away.

Looks like our crew will be moving in to the server. Been part of the team looking at real estate for the new SG Base. I think we found a nice place overlooking the beautiful pyro of Steel Canyon. I'll be fighting my buddy Louie for the top bunk.

Once we are official, I'll be hopping on your global chat channels and saying Hi personally.

I'm transfering my favorite blaster, my archer, but I may change his name slightly when he gets here. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to leveling my new Stone/Dark Tank and my Kin/DP Defender amongst your crew of heroes.

Thanks for welcoming us. With luck, you'll see us around. Feel free to say hi anytime.

(Sending the wife to the store for the appropriate "Guardian Groceries". I'm not drinking Pepsi anymore, is there a Diet Dr. Pepper Man lurking somewhere?)

    @Sterling Steel
  8. I have been successful on MOKTF more times then I have failed. And when I've failed, it has been spectacular.

Even if everyone in the SG has forgotten the time I was tanking Reichs-ie and failed to start off with the damn gun, I never will. Everytime I run now I remind the tank, (and if I am tanking, I make sure I remember) USE THE DAMN GUN FIRST!!!

My greatest success tanking the MOKTF was being solo tank and handleing two AVs at once. I wasn't all that confident I could do it, but I pulled it off. That was amazing.

My best advice is bubbles. Plan and simple, bubbles. You can never have too much defense. Okay, yes, you can, there is a soft-cap. But the bubbles can save a squish from being an errant one-shot death from a spawning AV.

Now, our fastest run had me on Earth/Kin and teamed with a ill/rad troller and a rad blaster. That nazi turd was just begging for die as fast as possible.

I work during the day, but if you are rolling an evening run, hit me w/ a tell (@Sterling Steel). If I'm not busy, Ill see if I can give you a hand. And even if I can't, good luck to you, please do not become the Susan Lucci of the Khan TF.
  9. Umm... am I allowed to speak? Honestly I don't know because I don't really feel apart of the community, namely because I didn't realize it existed until, I'd say, Decemeber of '09.

Hi, I'm Sterling Steel. Maybe some of you know me from "Forming up (insert Task Force here)." on various channels that I have seemingly stumbled across. I am the Super Leader of Project Checkmate. PC was left to me when Arkham Night left to rejoin his family in splotchy internet land last June. Since then, Project Checkmate has rolled into the Number One spot (by prestige) on Protector.

With that said, I think we are part of the problem. We have found such a great group that we tend to keep to ourselves. I know that our use of Ventrilo can sometimes leave non-PC players thinking we are stand-off-ish or we are just ignoring them. Hell, I think some of my people have just out and out ticked off some of the community through chat or what-not. God, I really don't want a misunderstanding to leave my SG with a stigma that PC is an arrogant bunch of a-holes. Yes, I am paranoid that people are avoiding us.

But then again, like I said before, we aren't going out there and searching you out. I'm starting to change the mindset. Our long-term membership is looking at what to do now that we did take Number 1. It's time we stepped out of our shells and embraced the rest of Protector. It's time Project Checkmate to join up on the Server events.

Well, I can't speak for everybody in PC (maybe I'm suppose to because I'm the Super Leader, but I'd rather they made decisions for themselves), but I'm out there and would love to meet some of you guys. Send a tell to @Sterling Steel if yer ever looking for someone to team with, or maybe you want some info on what's up with Project Checkmate and maybe we can run an event together or something. And we need ACTIVE Coalies! I hate saying hello on Coalie and getting no response. (Feeds the paranoia)

Wow, I feel like I'm trying to sell the SG. That's not my intent. Basicly what I'm trying to say is we are out there, we are active, and I want my SG to be more community active. I want to share the fun we have together with the rest of you. I'm rambling now, so that usually means I'm saying too much. So I'll end this post now. Thanks.

(Oh, and if my paranoia is true and the Protector Community does hate us, someone please let me know!)

edit: Okay, Innocent Wrath just shot past us, we are Number 2. I'm not worried, we'll get it back. We are finding the Prestige Race really exciting!)
  10. For the last couple of days, I've been thinking about rolling a new tank, namely because we are looking soon at a mass influx of Dual Pistol blaster/defenders. Someone's gotta keep them alive.

The plan was to roll out a Stoner, and I headed over to the boards to see if there was anything new on the subject. Then I found this thread.

My SG has seen two ice tanks roll through in two years. Both complained about endurance, 50 toggles, etc. A couple of times, some of our elite tank players have fiddled with the concept of rolling a Ice tank, only to say, "to hell with this".

Fire_Minded's post has inspired me. Not necessarily to prove him right or wrong, but just to see if I can have fun designing a damage-minded tank (yes, I have only played the "hit me in the face 100 times tank) built around Ice Armor. I'll roll it out this week and see where it takes me.
