Wow. Professor, are you honestly trying to be insulting? If so, it's working beautifully. Rare recipes provide a means for people to continue to improve a character after they have hit the level cap. Some people like that extra incentive, some don't need it. It doesn't make those that do obsessive or elitist. Someone is certainly being elitist here though.

Either way, I agree with your general premise - whether we have farm bait or not, the point remains that if we are so inclined, we can just ignore the existence of these things and play as we always had. This, to me, is the single most compelling reason (in terms of pure gameplay) to pick City of Heroes over any other MMO, and indeed over most RPGs.
That is why I left a raiding guild and my extremely well-geared druid in WoW and came back home to CoH. I got tired of the whole thing because grinding the same bloody isntances over and over again was all there was to do after a certain point. In CoH, if I get the urge to farm for purples the option is there. But I don't have to do it. Having that choice is worth its weight in gold to me.

tl;dr: I think people dislike farming because pretty much every other MMO requires it.
I can see your point, but in my opinion CoH "did it right" by not rebalancing the content to make IO's required. They also made it so that any drop you get can freely be sold/traded to another player. This is not the case with the better drops in games like WoW. Someone who doesn't get a chance to run the high end TF's all the time can still get a completely IO'd out character by just buying what they need on the market. This empowers both the group and solo players.

That being said, given the extremely low drop rates on the purple recipes, someone who is interested in getting a full set of them (or more) pretty much HAS to farm or play the Market, either to get the Infamy/Influence to buy the sets or to get the drops themselves. Given that, why hate on someone for taking advantage of a means of improving their character that has been provided by the game's Developers?

What a riot. "Play the game as meant" indeed.
So I take it that players are not, in fact, supposed to be able to kill large numbers of enemies within a reasonable time frame? Despite all the "Kill X" badges that exist, and all the AoE powers in this game? Really? You can sit there and say that with a straight face?

I am continually amazed at the hatred toward farming in CoH. It just strikes me as odd, since every single other MMO I have played requires farming of some form or another to accomplish a variety of goals. I often wonder how many of the people that hate farming purchase purple recipes provided by those same farmers.

But this post is suggesting something I haven't really thought about before. The farmers can get more drops and feed the items into the market to help us non-farmers get what we need as well. Otherwise, we'd be looking at certain items being rarer and possibly having to pay a slightly higher price for them, or not e able to get them at all.

It seems to me it's a WIN for everybody.
Logic? On the internet? I better go check outside to make sure it's not raining frogs.

Having played a variety of MMO's, I'm actually quite amused by people thinking of the act of farming as evil and horrid in this game. Other MMO's pretty much require the player to farm for things like crafting mats as normal gameplay will NOT give enough to craft various things.

And that is all some of us are saying. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I didn't even realize until this weekend they were worth MORE than standard xp per mob, I just thought the "extra xp" people talked about from Freaks was due to the self rezzing.

In my opinion they simply are not weak enough to justify being worth less than standard xp. That's all I'm saying.

No exotic damage - for a lowbie, the Vahz toxic damage can be horrendous by comparison.

Won't argue with 1.0 across all ranks instead of 0.8, out of the minor "threat" rezzing can be, but a *bonus* for fighting them is just not warranted. It is for the Tsoo in that same range, as mentioned, given how control/support/exotic heavy they are - just for comparison.

Frankly, I'm surprised it wasn't lowered long ago - like when Dreck got his timer added. Freaks have always been casual farm-bait.
Well at least we agree on something.
To be honest, I didn't realize until yesterday they gave bonus xp in addition to the "extra" xp you get for having to defeat some of them twice. It just wasn't something I paid that much attention to.

But to make them reward less than "normal" xp? Nah, that I disagree with. I'm fine with lowering them to 1.0 though.

The answer should be obvious, but I'll indulge you a bit. I personally find them annoying from time to time on any of the AT's you mentioned. Is that better?

As for "always being a cakewalk" are you referring to 40+ play or characters in the 20-40 range? That makes a big difference to the conversation. I will agree that for characters above 40 they are very easy. But, you know, there are other parts of the game. And for the lower level ranges where you can find Freakshow, I personally feel lowering their XP is unjustified as in that level range their challenge level is completely in line with other enemy types. For that reason I say make their modifier 1.0, not 0.8.

On a side note: I ran a Freakshow paper mission about an hour ago. Two of them self-rezzed in the entire mission. So for that mission, in I16, the XP reward would have been below average.
  10. The other day I did the Diviner Maros arc on a new Brute I've been leveling. I've always found that arc to be annoying as hell, but tolerated it because the xp was really good for it. Now? I doubt I'll ever touch it again on any character. Somehow I rather doubt this is what the Dev's wanted, but I guess that's too bad. I'm not going to bother with annoying missions for a potentially sub-standard reward. It's all too common for me to do a Freakshow mission and have very few (or even none) of them self rez. In that situation the xp from them won't be worth my time. I guess this will apply to pretty much any Freakshow arc too. Too great a chance that the rewards will be mediocre to make it worth fooling with them, especially given how annoying they are to squishies.

I'm excited for power customization but I can understand that others would like some actual story content.
I see your point. However we know the Dev's are also working on a new expansion while releasing Issues. I can forgive some story light Issues given that in a few months we are getting what should be a rather large chunk of content all at once. Content that will (hopefully) keep us all rather happily busy for quite some time.

And here, ladies and gentlemen, is once more proof that some people simply cannot be pleased.

I understand the desire for more story content, but when I think about the enormous amount of work represented by these additions, I say cut the Devs some slack.
  14. You will most definitely need Stamina. I also highly suggest getting Consume, as just Stamina will not completely solve the endurance issues you run into at low levels. Trust me on this one.

Also, take and slot Healing Flames as soon as possible. And by "slot" I mean get it six-slotted as quickly as you can without gimping your other powers. It is an excellent heal, and since FA is a resist set you will be taking quite a bit of damage.

As for Knockdown, I have a Stone Melee/Willpower Brute who has no problems at all with Fury generation, despite keeping the mobs on their rumps, bouncing, and stunned practically all the time. The knockdown you generate is very good and will allow your passive healing (boosted by the Fitness pool) to keep you topped off in small fights, allowing you to save Healing Flames for when you really need it.

Edited to add: I don't mean to imply you should use Healing Flames sparingly. Don't be afraid to hit it often. Just that with Fitness and the mitigation your Knockdown abilities will provide, you won't necessarily need it every fight.

I didn't mean to imply that my $14.99 made a huge deal to the Devs, I just used it as my way of stating this would not be something I would expect to pay an extra fee for.
  16. The answer to that one is easy for me: $14.99 per month. Not one cent more.

I just don't consider the ability to transfer items and money to my own characters to be an unreasonable request, and certainly not something deserving of a special in-game item pack or other micro-transaction to enable it.

If that is really the point we are at, then it's a lost cause. But I'd like to think there's still hope for the "wailing" approach.

/em clears throat to start wailing again
  17. Hehe, yes, it is their world. But that doesn't stop me from making loud noises about the things I disagree with.

I'm just hoping that we can eventually sway them.

And this is the part that utterly mystifies me. Why are they so opposed to it? All they are doing is causing an inconvenience. They are not stopping money sharing between characters on the same account. Just last night I moved funds over to a lowbie Brute I am leveling. It was annoying and a hassel and reduced the amount of time I had to actually play the game.

I'll say it again: The Devs aren't stopping same account transfers of funds from happening. They are just making it annoying. Obnoxiously so in my opinion, especially in light of the ease with which this can be accomplished in other games, some of which are as old or older than CoH.

PS: Swellguy, sorry if I come across like I'm jumping on you. I'm not, obviously, as you've expressed a desire to have this feature too. It's just that the Devs ridiculous stance on this has me riled, and I've had an annoying week at work.
  19. The naysayers can say what they will, but CoH remains the ONLY MMO I have played that does NOT allow someone to easily transfer money and/or items to their own characters. People are not asking for some pie in the sky ground-breaking functionality. They are asking for what is a standard feature of the majority of MMO's.

When CoH had no economy or crafting system I could see it. Those days are over. The Devs added an economy and loot. In for a penny, in for a pound.
  20. Villain Dev content from the early 30's on up is "What EB(s)/AV(s) will you fight today?"

My favorite AT is Dominator. So yeah.....I do lots of papers and MA when my friends aren't on. Some EB's are soloable for me, many aren't. Given the dearth of teams Villain side, I usually just do papers until folks in my global lists log in. I get to kick some rumpus on my Dom and not worry about getting one shot by a mob immune to half my powers every other mission.
  21. With 3 End Reduction SO's, Mids shows Arctic Air as consuming 0.53 end/sec. My spines/ea stalker running all his toggles plus Combat Jumping uses 0.63. So yeah, Arctic Air is a horrible end drain. It's a single toggle that literally costs as much as some armor sets' full complement of toggles.
  22. Perhaps not incredibly cool, but my character to make the most use of the Science pack is my Mind/Fire Dom, Burning Curiosity. His bio is that he is a shapeshifting demon of deception who uses his mental powers and various forms to trick and/or torment mortals.

Each costume is a different form. They are:

    1) "True" form. A 4 foot imp-like demon, complete with wings and barbed tail.
    2) An angel. Easy to trick humans that think you're actually the opposite of what you really are.
    3) An 8 foot bald, extremely thin humanoid male with pointed ears and glowing eyes. This form he uses to intimidate mortals.
    4) A sultry human female.

If and when I get around to shipping some Halloween salvage over to him from my other characters, his last "form" will be an extremely handsome human male to complement the female look.
  23. There's been some really great feedback in this thread. I thank everyone for the advice, you've all helped a lot. I've gained another couple levels on my stalker and last night did the Cap SF. I'm still enjoying the AT immensely. Like I said in my earlier post, I really wish I had tried Stalkers before now. I didn't know what I was missing.
  24. Actually I detest the Hollows, because its creation emptied out my favorite lowbie zone ever: Perez Park. Oh, how I miss the constant teams in that place. Such fun.

I really wish the Dev's would do something with Perez. Shame to see it go to waste.

If you squeeze in stamina in your 20s and travel in your 30s you're right on par.
Thanks, that makes me feel better. As I mentioned above, I just felt like I might have been doing something wrong since I'm new to the AT. Now my only regret is not trying one before now.
