  1. Ok, I'll give you a serious reply about fiteklubbing and inspirations.

The problem people have with fiteklubbers, myself included, is that they expect others to follow their own simplistic, imaginary rules in zone PvP and then complain about it bitterly when others do not.

Like this guy, people in the zones use inspirations against my fortunata all the time, and I ignore it. It's part of this game, I'm used to it, I don't have a problem with it. I mentioned it here only to explain the action. As an irrelevant aside, I make an exception for arena matches and use inspirations when my opponent wants to use them.

Yes, I could use inspirations on my fortunata in zone PvP and be more effective. It's not exactly a profound insight. I could also retire my VEATs for better PvP archetypes; get another account for farming PvP IOs, power-leveling, and buffing myself; only come out to fight when my cooldowns are up; leave the zone to refill my tray after every fight; etc. The list of ways I could be more effective is a lot longer than the utterly obvious "use inspirations". I don't do any of the above merely out of personal preference.

As for the "you don't know what you are doing" observation(s), it's virtually the default comment in every PvP forum I've ever seen. The forum software ought to prepend every reply with it to save time.
  2. This is from my log of Monday night. Everything that was said and emoted is included, minus other players' names (and the obscenities edited out by the forum software).

I log onto my fortunata (Dominique Moreau) in Warburg (Virtue) and see a team of two super strength/willpower brutes fighting arachnoids. I check their info to see which is the weaker and kill her first. The other is able to heal and consume enough green inspirations; eventually I run low on endurance (I don't use inspirations on this character) and withdraw for a rest. The brutes return; I kill the weaker one quickly, and the arachnoids get the kill on the other.

Expecting them to throw in the towel and leave Warburg, I return to chatting with a friend about another game. Once again they return.

11-01-2010 19:44:40 [Tell] --><my friend>: damn, these guys are persistent. one sec

Arachnoids again get the kill on the stronger, but the weaker is able to reach the hospital before I can finish her.

    11-01-2010 19:48:20 [Broadcast] <weaker brute>: :P

This time I move to another part of the island to resume my conversation. Soon /whoall reveals that not only have they not left, the weaker brute has switched to a scrapper. I return to investigate and discover that she's martial arts/regen, but probably not much more threatening than her brute. I ignore her entirely and go for the stronger brute. Without the arachnoids, I still can't overcome the greens and heals, and so eventually must withdraw.

    The brute speaks.

    11-01-2010 20:06:25 [Broadcast] <tough guy brute>: thats right u better keep running

I rest up and return to find the brute glowing green, a sign hung on him by our thoughtful developers to let everyone know that he has a launch code and his five-minute launch timer is running. I resume the attack as he runs for the launch terminal pillbox and the regen scrapper tries to kill me. We reach the launcher and the brute speaks again.

    11-01-2010 20:11:04 [Broadcast] <tough guy brute>: ******* ***** u better kill me

At this point I decide that he isn't going to be leaving with his rocket. I activate my jet pack and hover over the launch terminal, webbing them both to the ground and continuing the attack on the brute. Eventually the launch timer runs out before he can get enough of a break to enter the launch code. Low on health and probably low on greens, unable to get off the ground, the super strength/willpower brute seeks refuge inside the pillbox. I turn off the jet pack and land on the pillbox.

    11-01-2010 20:15:14 Dominique Moreau yawns

Deep within his concrete redoubt, the brute vents his spleen.

    11-01-2010 20:15:33 [Broadcast] <tough guy brute>: then go the **** away u piece of ****
11-01-2010 20:15:57 [Broadcast] Dominique Moreau: Not after the rudeness. Now you have my full attention.
11-01-2010 20:16:02 [Broadcast] <tough guy brute>: unless u wanna stand toe to toe sto p that ***** jumping
11-01-2010 20:16:34 [Broadcast] <tough guy brute>: and the rudeness because yer trash

Leaping from building to building to avoid the regen scrapper, I consider what to do about the brute hiding in the pillbox. Seeing him peek out of the doorway, I try something I've never used in PvP since I started in i6: I put a Shivan on the doorstep. Rather than avoid the Shivan, the brute and scrapper begin attacking it there at the pillbox door. I get behind the Shivan and resume my attack on the brute through the doorway. Before long the brute runs back inside the pillbox, chased by the Shivan, while the scrapper switches back to me. Eventually, in what I suppose was a final act of desperation, the regen scrapper presses the self-destruct button.

    11-01-2010 20:18:30 <regen scrapper> MISSES! Self Destruction power had a 13.61% chance to hit, but rolled a 52.47.
11-01-2010 20:18:30 Shivan Decimator: <regen scrapper> MISSES! Self Destruction power had a 37.42% chance to hit, but rolled a 59.88.

Concluding that he's not better off alone inside the pillbox with the Shivan, the brute emerges. Time to put an end to this.

11-01-2010 20:19:08 Chemical Warfare: HIT <tough guy brute>! Your Warburg Chemical Weapon power had a 54.31% chance to hit, you rolled a 46.55.

What the hell, I already had two lab tech codes dropped by the weaker brute. Have another nuke.

11-01-2010 20:19:23 Nuclear Blast: HIT <tough guy brute>! Your Warburg Nuclear Weapon power had a 62.06% chance to hit, you rolled a 60.94.

    11-01-2010 20:19:30 You gain 487 infamy.
    11-01-2010 20:19:30 Fatalists gains 7 prestige.
    11-01-2010 20:19:30 You receive a bounty of 5.00 reputation!
    11-01-2010 20:19:30 You gain 1.00 reputation.
    11-01-2010 20:19:30 You have defeated <tough guy brute>

11-01-2010 20:19:36 [Broadcast] Dominique Moreau: You lose.
    11-01-2010 20:20:45 [Broadcast] <tough guy brute>: yer an ******* u killed me but i can respawn u can't change being an ******* :P

The regen scrapper revives, probably hoping to finish me off. Not feeling particularly merciful at the moment, I kill her. They return immediately; again I can't overcome the greens and heals and have to withdraw. They leave Warburg, and to my surprise, the tells begin.

11-01-2010 20:33:07 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: and u seen i was doing scientists thats why i was rude you were rude first
11-01-2010 20:33:47 [Tell] --><tough guy brute>: Go read the warning about PvP zones. I could care less why you are here.
    11-01-2010 20:34:17 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: ok w/e hope i see u out again why dont u try rv
    11-01-2010 20:34:43 [Tell] --><tough guy brute>: Name's Elmer Gorbulorp. I'm sure you will.
11-01-2010 20:35:13 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: cool i'll look for ya everytime i go to rv which now will be everyday'

I didn't reply, as I didn't expect this to alter my RV experience significantly.

11-01-2010 20:36:37 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: and hope ya got alot of pvp sets because everyone i know will be ****** elmer in rv

    11-01-2010 20:37:52 [Tell] --><tough guy brute>: hehe sure
11-01-2010 20:39:00 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: why dont ya hop on elmer now, oh wait let me guess a flying blaster?
11-01-2010 20:39:26 [Tell] --><tough guy brute>: You ask around about Elmer and get back to me.
11-01-2010 20:39:54 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: yer not worth me asking around lol

Ok, have a nice day. But he's not done yet.

    11-01-2010 20:41:33 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: but if it makes ya feel special i'll ask my bud <friend #1> or <friend #2> about u
    11-01-2010 20:41:52 [Tell] --><tough guy brute>: <friend #1> knows who I am. Ask him.
    11-01-2010 20:42:22 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: he's not on
    11-01-2010 20:42:39 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: let me guess u beat <friend #1> up too right?
11-01-2010 20:43:09 [Tell] --><tough guy brute>: Maybe, I dunno. I've killed everyone at least once.
    11-01-2010 20:45:44 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: what kinda alt?
    11-01-2010 20:46:15 [Tell] --><tough guy brute>: What alt?
    11-01-2010 20:46:22 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: what is elmer?
    11-01-2010 20:46:30 [Tell] --><tough guy brute>: A Huntsman.
    11-01-2010 20:47:06 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: a soldier?
11-01-2010 20:47:34 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: well hope ya run and fly fast
11-01-2010 20:47:51 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: because thats the ONLY way you'd beat me in rv
11-01-2010 20:48:02 [Tell] --><tough guy brute>: Bane with gun attacks instead of mace. Probably the only one in PvP. That's why everyone knows me. Except you.

On Virtue, that is. Don't know about other servers.

11-01-2010 20:49:14 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: well i have been in rv alot lately, like last 3 weeks, because that is when i started pvping and i haven't seen u
11-01-2010 20:49:39 [Tell] --><tough guy brute>: True, I haven't been there much lately. Been leveling a PvE brute.
11-01-2010 20:52:00 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: well u beat me in rv in a fair toe to toe fight and i'll call u the man
11-01-2010 20:53:40 [Tell] --><tough guy brute>: You can call me anything you want. I don't fight "toe to toe" on either of these characters. I just make sure the orange names die.
11-01-2010 20:54:32 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: lol thats what i figured, what kinda talent or skill is it to fly and run around? none so i'll call you what i want lol
11-01-2010 20:55:16 [Tell] --><tough guy brute>: I don't think your 3 weeks of experience, such as they are -- fiteklubbing -- qualifies you to judge my level of competence.
11-01-2010 20:56:01 [Tell] <tough guy brute>: yer right about me being a pvp noob, but i seen enough to know, if u can't toe to toe u ain't ****

I elected not to reply. Hey, who can argue with reasoning like that? Not me.

Why would I make up a silly name like "Elmer Gorbulorp"? Of course that's my real name.

To answer your question: Yes, I'm using one of Ben's. He let me use it after I added him on Facebook. My mission is to wipe out all the RPvPers who roleplay as PvP IO farmers.

Will I mess around with friends and acquaintances? Sure. However there is a huge difference between messing with friends and the various god mode steps you need to take to stand a any form of a chance in competitive PvP, RP or not.

Besides I just spent 1.4 Billion Inf on IO'ing out my Blaster so they could soft cap defense, Why on Earth would I want to PvP with them with PvP in its current state of "Ha ha ha **** you defense based toons!" ?

Back in the days of Old School RPvP, we had the Oldschool PvP System... you know, the thing that they decided to change randomly on a whim that crippled holds, heals and defense making it suck to be anything other than a corrupter or a Regen Scrapper.

I am glad I PvP'ed and RPVP'ed back in the day and had my fun then, because you wont see me touching the new PvP system with a medium sized pointed stick.
    Elmer Gorbulorp, my Huntsman:
    1. Does not have Phase Shift or Hibernate
    2. Is a defense-based character
    3. Has no purple IOs, only one set of relatively inexpensive PvP IOs (Javelin Volley), and most of his enhancements are under level 30
    4. Consequently cost less than 100 million infamy to outfit
    5. Has earned the majority of my fifty or so PvP IO drops (which is a lot of kills) in RV
    6. Is equally effective in PvE
No, he can't solo any decent corruptors, regen scrappers, or AVs, but that's what teammates are for. Teammates.

I'm not advocating i13; I'm just pointing out that all this hand-wringing about "I can't win in PvP unless I roll the FOTM and spend billions" is a cloud of Rikti monkey gas. The advantage of purple IOs is vastly disproportionate to their rarity and cost. I've never used purple IOs on any of my several very successful PvP characters.

Edit: Whoops. I guess it is i13?
    i13 introduced, among other things:
    • "Diminishing Returns" (DR), a complicated formula which lowers the values of almost every statistic in proportion to its size, sometimes dramatically, while you're in a PvP zone. Player characters are slower and less powerful in i13 PvP.
    • Separate values for powers in PvP zones. Most attacks do different amounts of damage in PvP than they do in PvE. Many typed defensive powers -- for example, Tough's smashing/lethal damage resistance -- are expanded to apply to all kinds of damage, and player characters receive extra resistance to all damage, varying by AT, as a PvP zone bonus. Crowd control powers behave very differently in PvP (see below).
    • Heal decay, which causes heals (including green inspirations) to be less effective when applied soon after a previous heal. A player who consumes several green inspirations in rapid succession discovers that only the first one had its intended effect.
    • Expanded travel suppression, which causes travel powers to deactivate for several seconds after performing most actions. Escape is more difficult under i13.
    • Revamped crowd control (CC). CC protection becomes resistance in PvP, with the exception of knockback protection, which is dramatically lowered by DR. Holds, stuns, immobilizes, etc. from powers last for four seconds for Controllers and Dominators and two seconds for everyone else. Any application of a hold, stun, immobilize, etc. gives fifteen seconds of immunity from further applications. What this typically means when fighting a Controller, for example, is that he CC's you for a few seconds, then you have fifteen seconds to run around and fight, then a few more seconds of CC, and so on.

There's a trick with certain costume options to make it seem like you have saddle shoes, I;ve taught folks how to make them, been called a dev over that.

HEck, there are times I've logged in as Arbiter Fabulous and been asked what's it like to work with Sexy Jay, or worse, folks have thought I *WAS* Sexy Jay.

Tonight it happened again, I was on as my petless thugs mastermind, Occult 45, who is going to be my big GR character, walking around with my dual pistols out, and folks were, once again, asking me if I was in beta, a dev, or worked somewhere else in paragon studios.

For the record, I am not a dev, I do not work for NCSoft, Paragon studios or it's affiliate companies. As for beta, I signed up for it at HeroCon, I stayed active for the loyalty program so.. yes I'm in beta, eventually.. whenever it's going to start. When that is, I dunno.

Please folks, all it takes is someone accidentally talking about how they ran into the Dev "Arbiter Fabulous" for me to lose access to this wonderful game.

I like to be social, but it's really difficult when I have to walk on eggshells typing, trying to make sure I don;t say something that could be construed as breaking the rules. Major rules at that.

Sorry for ranting, at first it was funny being thought of as a developer, goodness knows I'd be AT Paragon Studios in a heartbeat if I could, I love this game and would love working for it. But after a while, it gets a bit cumbersome.

Forgive the rant, and if you think this post seems silly or pointless, guess how *I* feel.

    Love,

Arbiter "I'M NOT A DEV" Fabulous
While I'm sure every Paragon Studios coder would risk his job for a chance to hack some saddle shoes for his game character, somehow I doubt they would play something as ridiculous as an effeminate Arbiter for any length of time.

Agreed. I concede that the Build Up animation with the mace looks cool and everything, but all my training is with the Arachnos submachinegun. It's just weird to carry around a full-sized Arachnos mace only for Build Up, not to mention the inherent impracticality of swapping weapons like that twice every 45 seconds. If I weren't so super, I would drop them now and again.

I can very esily get a -kb recipe but it does nothing to being debuffed, held, or flattened by an "uber" toon. Yes, it's about having fun, i agree but noone looks to go to a pvp zone to make multiple trips to the hospital or being ganked (which is what i see mostly in my experience anyway).

I'm not a pvp hater, but a realist.
Since Laylyn started this thread 2 1/2 years ago, I'm not sure you should expect him to answer you now. (He pops in now and again, but last I heard, he PvPs mostly in WoW.) Since then, overall PvP numbers have dropped precipitously. If things keep going that direction, we'll get to see if he was right.

I don't want to speak for Laylyn about everything, but as someone who was in his VG on Guardian, I can tell you that he usually played a radiation/thermal corruptor. This was back when blue had both quantitative and qualitative superiority over red, and he died a lot. He died constantly. And I never heard him complain about it on Vent. All he cared about was doing something challenging with his friends, and PvE eventually stops being challenging.

  13. Ok, here are the two reasons why I have "No AE" in all of my characters' search comments. One is IC, one is OOC.

The IC one is suspicion. Call it paranoia if you will; paranoids live longer in the Rogue Isles. Where is Architect Entertainment getting its funding and why?

You have big, shiny, new buildings full of the latest technology, staffed by technicians 24/7, giving away piles of reward loot...and no apparent means of generating the income to pay for it. That means someone is spending a lot of money in exchange for...what?

I'll tell you what: a "scan" of every big-time villain who comes in to use their facilities. Thanks, but I think I'll keep my "scan" to myself. Let whoever is paying AE's bills be surprised if and when they come looking for me.

The OOC reason is merely that I don't want a bunch of AE badges that might cause me to be mistaken for some power-leveled incompetent who received all his "training" -- doing who knows what -- inside a nice, safe computer. (I guess that's sort of an IC reason, too.)
  14. Some folks moved to new day jobs.

My level 17 stalker sat on a roof in Mercy, drank a beer, and watched some Skuls on the next roof over.

Rod Steele slipped out of the US and returned to the Etoile Islands after almost three weeks of filthy, disgusting debauchery at Leather Week and the Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco.

Elmer Gorbulorp got his Halloween costume from the St. Martial facemaker, although he likes it so much he may start wearing it all the time.
  15. Good choice. RWZ is fun for Trick-or-Treating. Lots of ruins, abandoned buildings, and real monsters (Rikti) lurking around for good measure. Spooky!

And the Virtue CoX forum is one of the tamer ones. If civility matters to you, I would suggest avoiding almost any Internet forum.

Also, unique to gaming forums is the "this game sucks so bad and is going to die tomorrow solely because of ______" attitude. You start playing a new game, you think you're having a lot of fun, and then you check out the forums -- only to discover that the game is actually a terrible, awful mess and only a fool would keep playing it.

As many people danced with the idiot as complained about him.
  18. Squidlington

    I went into rv

I always assumed Hot has a buffbot or two somewhere. All of the "Korea" or "RoK Heroes" appear to use every conceivable advantage regardless of what anybody thinks about it.

There are a couple of regen scrappers like Hot on Virtue. I don't know jack about fiteklubbing, but I would guess some kind of MM could beat him. Maybe the right kind of Corruptor or Dominator as well. Don't even try it with a Brute, Stalker, or VEAT.

Anyway, this is not the right forum to ask this question. Go to the PvP forums and ask (or look up) how to beat regen scrappers in duels. I'm sure it's a common question.
  19. My WoW main is on Moon Guard, which was the largest RP server when I quit a year ago. Being on "the" RP server is a mixed bag, but mostly positive. I only recall two real rules concerning WoW RP servers.

One, you can't have a name like "l33th4x0r" or "50Cent". "L33t-speak" and real-world references in names are prohibited. You had to change such a name, and only if you persisted in breaking the rules would you get banned. Few Virtue character names would get zapped on Moon Guard. WoW also has a random name generator you can use if thinking up a permissible name taxes you too much. Guild names are mostly exempt.

Two, if you are going on about real-world events -- e.g. the Super Bowl -- in local or a public channel and someone asks you to stop, you are obligated to do so. Only if you ignore such a request can you be petitioned. This was very rarely requested or enforced, and you were better off just avoiding the channels in which the idiots told hilarious Chuck Norris jokes.

These aren't exactly onerous rules, and most people on Moon Guard were not active roleplayers. The primary effect of the "RP server" tag was to funnel the "l33t50centh4x0r" crowd mostly away from the "carebear" RP servers. My opinion was that it was a more mature, more casual, and good-natured population. If someone did try to give a role-player grief, he was usually given more grief in return by the locals, who liked their server whether they roleplayed or not.

On the downside, your more serious (and better) raiders tended to avoid RP servers (and probably PvPers as well). This is probably what caused me to quit, since there just weren't any slots available in the very few good Moon Guard raiding guilds, and I refused to transfer to a more-populated l33t raiding server.

Finally, being almost exclusively a PvPer, I did try Freedom first. Now I do NOT roleplay in PvP. I could not possibly do both at once and do not try. But in one of my first groups on Freedom, I mentioned something in team chat about...Lord Recluse, maybe. It wasn't anything anyone on Virtue would recognize as "role-playing". Right away I got some grief from a teammate about Freedom NOT being the roleplay server, and how I should GTFO if I was a roleplayer. Apparently mentioning anything about NPCs is Freedom-style role-playing.

So I guess I don't belong on Freedom, but Virtue PvP has curled up and died. Probably time to look for another game.

i have a conclusion which has led me to these 3 questions:

    1. what build is best to beat a fire / regeneration scrapper

    2. has anyone ever beat hot of war in a duel b4

    3. is hot of war the best melee pvper on virtue

    thanks for your time
Did Hot have his heavy with him as usual? That can make "dueling" tough.

    4x 10% from purples
    5x 7.5% from lotgs
    4x 5% from crushing impact/adjusted targeting
    1x 6.25 from decimation
    1x 7.5 from kinetic crash
Sounds expensive. Waaaaay too expensive for me.
