Quote:I think I need a translation of this sentence. It doesn't make sense. The level of poor sportsmanship is rooted in the players, not the people.
I've had good teams, I've had lousy teams, and teams in the middle. I know at least one player that went from "I want to help" to "I am never running another Master STF again". Rather heatedly, I might add.Quote:Are you honestly trying to convince people here that, given a team of level-headed, happy-go-lucky players, a Master run will eventually turn them into the people you seem to eternally get stuck running Master runs with?
Well, we agree on something at least.
I didn't say it was a universal issue. I seldom make absolute comments because I'm old enough to know better. The exceptions tend to be against very foolish ideas or when I've observed the behaviour in question. I did say that the system as designed "from my point of view, they promote..." the bad behaviour.Quote:Our Master runs have been rather lovely honestly. Sure, we fail. So what? We finish the job, think about where we goofed up, and try again the next week. If we win, WOOT!
If we can have a grand old time with each other, but your groups can't, then the fault isn't with the Master design, because it would be a universal (or near enough) issue.
I might take you up on the offer sometime, I do have characters spread out over all the US servers. But I am unlikely to do server transfers due to several factors (cash, SG commitments, the ability to keep a character's name, etc.).Quote:The fault would therefore lie with the people. That's why I'm inviting you to check it out elsewhere.
Well, it is nice to know that how much I feel about that subject was crystal clear.Quote:And despite your little drama explosion (you know, where you went NEVAR in two inch letters)
I've tried that.Quote:I wasn't suggesting that you transfer to get a badge; I suggested that you transfer to see a group of normal people work hard to get Master and still have a good time with it. That's what positive people do: Invite others to participate positively.
Maybe, but they are also not as rosy as you make them out to be either. The truth is likely that the master runs are in between and depend on several factors that neither of us have control over. -
Quote:It literally has gotten to the point that this friend in question is being called names and publicly at that because the person has been on so many attempts in the last few months. I'm not being silly about this. The level of poor sportsmanship that these badges bring out is just wrong for the game.I think the lesson here is that you should find people to play with who aren't jerks. Same as in real life.
...
My point is this -- you are being silly.
Yeah, you shouldn't play with jerks. On the flip side is that these badges are pretty much designed to bring out that kind of attitude. -

Quote:Server transfers should NEVER be the solution to any problem the game has with teaming. To say it should be is completely wrong and is missing the point.Play on a server with a nicer, more emotionally stable population like Freedom.
And I've heard (and witnessed) the exact opposite a few times I've been to every single server. While I agree that every server might have a group that is willing to help, I don't think you can say that the majority of the time. It really revolves around a lot of factors like time on, server in question, and random chance. -
Quote:So I downloaded the I17 map pack and installed it over the previous one. Still the same old maps though. I deleted all of the map files and started the game without them, only to see the same old maps again, even though their files were deleted and the game restarted. After that, I installed the new map pack again and verified all of the game files before launching, still nothing, getting the same old pre-I17 maps. I have no idea how to proceed further.
Has anyone been having similar problems, and does anyone have any idea what am I doing wrong?Quote:Only two things I can think of is that you are installing the maps to the wrong directory or you are running Vista/Windows 7 and need to run the program (map pack) as an admin.
Which directory do you have City of Heroes in?Quote:Got Win XP, installing in the right directory. Checked many, many times. C:\Games\City of Heroes, if it's of any value. Have C:\Games\CoHtest too, but wasn't touching that one at all.
EDIT: European installer, for what it's worth.Quote:Check if there is a C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\Data directory. I know it isn't in your CoH directory, but it might have got confused. If that directory does exist, copy it to your actual game folder.Ok, first you say that installing, uninstalling, and then reinstalling doesn't do anything.Quote:Erm, I do have a C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\Data, and that's where I've put the new map files (\textures\maps and vmaps). C:\Program Files\City of Heroes is where my game is.
When you responded to my question of where you had the game, you said:
Now you are saying that it is:Quote:C:\Games\City of Heroes
So which is it?Quote:C:\Program Files\City of Heroes -

From another post of mine:
I was told by a mutual friend that one of my friends was so harassed on a public channel recently that they shut the game down and hid for a few days because of yet another failed Master of Statesman TF. Is this the behaviour that the developers want to promote?Quote:A few days ago I had two people in the closed beta thread tell me that the Mo badges build community.
From my point of view, they promote:
- IO snobbery. If you don't have a pile of set bonuses, you are deemed somehow less of a player and are less likely to find a Mo team.
- Sub-category is lack of Purple or PVPIO slotting.
- Blaming people on the team for the least little mistakes.
- Hurt feelings from those that are either blamed or who doesn't have a right build.
- AT snobs (I've heard "we don't want any blasters on this attempt" and that is just one AT that suffers from shunning.)
- An "Us vs Them" mentality when it comes to badges. <-This is NOT good for the community as a whole.
Then there is the problem of creating a team. Most people are interested in quick merits. This means speed runs of ITFs, LGTF (the irony here is thick), even speed Positrons (the flashback version is going to get its merit rewards nerfed to nothingness, as I know people are already saying that they'll do them under 90 minutes), and others.
These badges DO NOT promote community building. Fundamentally, if a badge breaks community in a Massively Multiplayer Game, then it is acting against the developers, not for them. The developers, in order to make money, need to do everything they can to build communities in the game. - IO snobbery. If you don't have a pile of set bonuses, you are deemed somehow less of a player and are less likely to find a Mo team.

Corrected that for you. The only challenging Task Forces are the 45-50 range, and the Shards aren't particularly challenging, just long, drawn out, and boring.

This:
Quote:And this:I would rather fight an army of Kronos Titans with my squishiest character stipped of all IO's and debuffed then see a new Master badge added.
Mirror my opinions. I'd still try to get them, but I wouldn't consider it "fun". -
Quote:I'm at 768, without the 1-9 times the Victor. After the first day of i17 play, Master-Blade is up to 766! I still have the last part of the new Positron to go.
(In all fairness, I still have 1-8 Times the Victor, so Badgehunter-wise I'm really only at 758. This character will cap at 767-8=759 with the current available badges and my current Veteran Status)

Well, as of an hour ago, my main badge collector is at 768 badges. Vet badges over 60 months, Bug Hunter, and Passport not collected.
The only thing I've yet to try to get blue side is to see if the Master of Lady Gray is actually live. -
And when did I do that? All my talk about the subject was from speculation from War Witch's comments about something hidden, and her alluding to the RWZ. Well, that and a guess as to what the developers might do in terms of badges.

Quote:I see it as a player (out of character) action, so it should be global.Basically, the badge is "were you there or not". The debate is that if it should be based on if "you the character" were there, or "you the player" were there.
Only if you want it to. However the badge is awarded for out of character actions, in this case logging in during a specific time frame. This is different than the Vet Rewards which are given out just by continued subscription.Quote:The vet badges indicate player longevity. Anniversary badges indicate toon longevity.
What they are tracking is what system was in place when the badge was introduced. The anniversary badges were meant to be a reward for the player participating in the game during the anniversary time. They didn't have the technology to have one character earn a badge then award the same badge globally to other characters. This created the player delusion that these badges were a sign of character creation. That is putting the cart well before the horse.Quote:The two badges sort of overlap, but, if they're tracking player longevity and toon longevity, then that difference should stay in place.
It has only been in the last year that the tech has arrived to award a badge globally from a single character's actions. The problem, it seems, is that they have to figure out a way to bridge the two awarding mechanisms (Anniversary badges award one way, Global AE badges award another).
So, throw the baby out with the bathwater?Quote:Or get rid of the anniversary badges altogether and just use vet badges. Or tie vet rewards to the toon, not the account.
Multiple threads of this topic have been eaten by the forum monster when it got hungry. -
Quote:Did you see it on a player? Did you earn the badge by running the TF?Because I found it on test, legit rather than how you all did?
As stated, Positron has several badges that players cannot earn. Did you not notice in your picture that he also has the 1,250 badges badge? It is the one slightly under the MoLady Gray badge. He also has both both mayhem & safeguard badges in that picture.
And yeah, we've been discussing MoLG for a couple weeks now, even before open beta. -
Quote:Delete the two following folders:Just a side question. I've never installed any map packs before...is there a way to 'un-install' the map pack? From what I gather this map pack just places new img files in the coh directory....so really no software to un-install from Add/Remove Programs....but was curious. I would most likely get rid of the map pack once I get the shiny badges

Quote:I agree with you.Bug Hunter:
As I've always said I'd have no problem at all with Bug Hunter if it was a badge that was awarded by fixed objective requirements that were NOT dependant on human intervention.
While I did point out that it would be pretty hard to do, I also agree that whim should be taken completely out of the picture.Quote:Something like Beef's idea of "finding 10 legit bugs that are fixed" might be pretty hard to track like Snow Globe mentioned, but that would be infinitely perferable to having a badge totally dependant on the whims of the Devs.
Quote:I don't care how benelovent or "fair" the Devs might be - having ANY badge based purely on human decree is fundamentally flawed and rife with favoritism intentional or otherwise.
I've spent a lot of time and effort both in and out of closed betas. The exploit that I mention in the first post of this thread has been on the LIVE servers for over a year. Sometimes it is harder to do than others, but it is still there.Quote:in Leandro's particular case that he does spend a lot of time and effort in this game's closed betas
Besides, just like the Developer's Choice badges, getting rewarded for finding bugs in a closed beta smacks of having a reward (exclusive badge) on top of a reward (access to closed beta). -
-
Yeah, and usually they tell people before they do it. They usually restore it too. I hope that is the case this time, as I had 2 SGs from CoV beta with the 36 million prestige bases I was using for reference for my live base construction.
They also generally tell the players this so that they can test said procedure.Quote:It lets them see lots of characters from before the patch log in. If there's something buggy or slow in the update-from-I16 routines then this should catch the problem. (Heaven only knows how they can fix it before Wednesday, though.)
I should also note I was testing an arc with one of the test characters that is now gone. -
They tend to form at random when there is enough interest. You could always ask on Triumph Watch 2.0 or other channel.
-
Actually I was referring to the Master of Statesman TF, which tend to run often just trying to get the <censored> badge. Two birds, one stone thing.
