Double post! So, this is as good a time as any to break out into a song and dance routine.
*tapdances* -
Quote:A story arc that evolved around recovering this weapon, that could dwell into its' origin and powers, would be a good start, I think. If this dagger is that important to the plot, surely it deserve a little more exposition. So, in your ever snarky and prevelant wisdom, oh Venture-d one, what would you have done?
It could even be a personal-story thing where you play as the Dream Doctor recovering/creating/whichever the dagger. -
Quote:LV-426 is not the moon in Prometheus.has anyone had the thought of:
Settlers head to LV426 to colonise the planet... (between the events of Alien and Aliens) You know, the planet Prometheus went a ******* long time ago and never returned from, and apparently for which nobody bothered to look for?
I didn't dislike Prometheus because it's not enough (or too much, critics seem to disagree on this point) of an Alien prequel. I disliked it because it wasn't very good. -

I'll nominate two then! Because the first is a 'maybe'.
* The Scarlet Pimpernel: No powers, as such, but he does have a bit of a "disguised superhero" shtick, much like Batman.
* Benedict Ironbreaker (BenoƮt Brisefer): A kid with super strength. Though the common cold make him lose all his powers (this happens a lot). His arch nemesis is a sinister army of evil robots disguised as little old ladies.
Also, I have Modesty Blaise as a runner-up. I'm on the fence about whether she qualifies, since I see her as more of a James Bond kind of protagonist. -
Quote:Fiction doesn't follow the same rules as real life. Real Life doesn't have an overarching plot. Not having a plot would hardly make the story stronger, but it would be totally realistic. Spontaneously stupid behaviour in fiction needs some kind of explanation, because, ultimately, some guy sat down and decided that this "spontaneous" behaviour would happen. Maybe he has a plan. Maybe he rolled a die. One make for a better story than the other. The script writer is pretty spot on to human behaviour. You wouldn't believe how petty and childish our brightest minds can be. And once you realize how stupid the average person is, you need to remember how averages work and realize half the people are even stupider than the average person.
So, to repeat, in case it's not obvious enough: Fiction != Real Life -
Quote:Thank you for explaining how life works, then?Who was explaining the naming policy? We were talking about how just because someone desires something doesn't mean that said desire will be fulfilled.
But no. We weren't (as far as I'm aware, anyway) discussing the philosophical implications of "desire", but rather commenting on how someone upthread assumed that an alternative naming scheme, should it ever be considered, would be implemented in the same way Champions Online did it.
But if it's distracting, I will refrain from using the "D"-word in the future. -
Quote:If this movie is any indication, people react by either folding their arms and sulk in a corner because their fantastic discovery isn't fantastic enough, draw completely unfounded theories based on nothing, or trying to pet it.Or, maybe, one of the themes of the story is how people react to the unknown, especially when what they've encountered challenges all their assumptions.
And that's (presumably) the brightest minds money can buy. I dread to imagine what the script writer think the rest of us would do, but it probably involves running collectively off a cliff. -
I guess, at a sufficiently broad definition of "superhero", the question eventually becomes: "name some non-american comic book characters."
Zorglub is, perhaps, the greatest comic book villain of all time. But he's hardly a superhero. I find very few european comic book characters to qualify (IMHO) as super heroes, unless specifically created to spoof american comic books. -
Quote:Thank you for explaining how the current naming policy works.Who said that Apple's activity should cause Orange to change his desire to make an Apple character? Orange can "desire" anything he wants. That doesn't mean he's gonna get his desire satisfied unless Apple frees up the name and it's not taken first by another player desiring the same name.

Quote:But would you wait 33,000+ years to do it? That's a heck of a long time to hold a grudge. Now why they would want to kill humans, I think thats simpliler,
lets assume some sciencist somewhere created a tribe of clones somewhere with some modifications. Wouldn't it be logical to assume some religious fundimentalists might be inclined to try to kill off the clones, since by their definition clones would be abominations?
But, as you point out, we only have character assumption. We don't know if they actually want to destroy mankind. That assumption was based on, well, what Dr. Shaw bases all of her assumptions on: Nothing.
Speaking of assumptions, we also have no way of knowing that the "Engineers" actually broke off contact 2,000 years ago. Just because we haven't found any later-date markings doesn't mean they don't exist (unless, I suppose, you operate on Dr Shaw/Holloway logic). -

Quote:I don't really have an opinion on the old SSOOC system, or whether that, or a vaguely similar system is worth trying to design. I just kinda object to the whole "since it doesn't currently exist in an MMO, it's obviously doesn't fit the MMO genre." mentality. And, just because the previous dev team, for whatever reason, decided to not implement this system, does not dictate what the current dev team may or may not do.
Personally, I'm more of the mentality that of course it can be done. Whether the time, effort and eventual gameplay contribution is worth it, however, is something for a professional designer to assess. -

Quote:But you can call an orange an apple., or an appIe, or an app-el. Or Captain Apple.I get it. Apples and oranges are both examples of fruit but you can't call an orange an apple because apples got the name first.
Because those were free.
Also, apple is level 10 and hasn't played since 2004, is it really fair for him to stop orange from calling himself apple? And why would apple really care, anyway, if someone he'll never meet is also called apple (instead of apple., or appIe).
Apple shouldn't be so petty. -
Quote:I think you might be mistaking "I" for "Players". If everyone wanted the same thing and had the same definition of efficiency, it would make no sense for this game to have more than one AT, two powersets and one correct combination of powers from those sets.Players seek efficiency, and if you give them an efficient route through content, be it TFs or story arcs or newspaper missions, they're going to take it.
It's like that argument that it makes no sense to do anything for red-side because there's more blue-side players. Well duh. It also makes no sense to do stuff for stalkers, or controllers, since they're not nearly as popular as scrappers, right?
Quote:and it occurs to me you don't even have to take my word on this- the devs for *this game* spent a whole lot of time and energy on such a system before abandoning it as unworkable. -
There just needs to be a reference to "some hero who used to be Ms Liberty's granddad before Positron".

Quote:If those are the supporting actors and actresses, who're the leads?Supporting Actor: Alfie Allen, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Richard Madden
Supporting Actress: Emilia Clarke, Michelle Fairley, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams
Clash of Kings is almost all about Tyrion cleaning up the mess Cersei made of Kings Landing. If anyone's a 'lead' in book two (and, hence, season two) I'd think it'd be him. -
Quote:The movie doesn't really give any answers, so I agree. It doesn't deliberately violates any pre-established canon. Everything is guesswork and the only things we "know" are based on Dr. Shaw's theories about what's going on. And she's not basing those on evidence.Probably a lot of holes in the theory, but the idea that it tosses out established canon isn't necessarily completely true.

Enough with the hyperbole already. 'Destroying the World' plots are not the only alternative to 'Saving the World' plots.

Quote:Hear hear!In fact, the Night Ward story really comes off like a hero arc that villains are just allowed to take part in, and occasionally be jerks about it. At the very worst, villains can help support Tyrant, which as motivations go is just another variant of "go there, do that, get paid." That's the prime reason I've had quite enough of co-op zones and feel very strongly that villains need at least one new zone all to themselves that heroes can't go to, just so that the stories in it can be purely tailored for the villain side of things. Because right now, co-op storylines are little more than hero storylines where the hero is allowed to also be a jerk, that villains can take part in.
Enough of the greater good already! -
Quote:No, the objection, as I understand it, is that Desdemona is ridiculously over-sexualized. To the point where it gets silly. When you add older characters like Sister Psyche (transparent spandex, really?) and Swan, eventually you just have to pause and notice certain trends. I wouldn't say Penelope Yin is anywhere near this level, but given her posing it seems that someone wished she was. While I do agree that women in general and comics in particular are over sexualized I'm beginning to think the objection is not that women are over sexualized but that they are sexual at all. And that's a whole 'nother problem.
