Very nice. I give up a little aoe in exchange for full positional soft cap.
With staff I think I prefer oppressive gloom, as that stacks with staffs disorients (and it's less endurance) but that swaps out nicely.
I appreciate the help, thanks -
Pretty nice build you have there: soft capped to S/L, E and NE, very nice resists. Lots of low level IOs so it should work fine in exemplar mode.
The build I posted was (if you increase the IOs to lvl 50) soft capped to Melee, AOE, and 5% away from Ranged.
I don't actually know how important that 5% is, or whether there is some cunning way to tweak my build to get it. I naively think that it probably doubles the damage I would take from ranged, but it might be worse than that.
I don't know which is better, and would appreciate feedback -
I would appreciate a review and help with my Dark/Staff tanker.
I mostly want the tanker to act as a lynch pin in taskforces. Normally I tank with brutes (my dark melee/stone brute is very tough), but I would like to try doing it with a more mobile archetype.
In order to do this, I have set these desires for the build
* As close as possible to soft capped defences when exemplared to level 30+.
* I'd really like to meet the hard cap resistance for smashing/lethal
* I only have a few billion, so cannot afford lots of purples
* Can do respectable damage
* Can hold aggro
I've kept cloak of fear for the low level task forces, and the to-hit debuff
If you think those targets are the wrong ones (i.e look you really want recharge/hit points/more knockback resist) I would be interested.
Highlights:
Defences: Melee 44.7 (with guarded spin), Ranged 38.7, AOE 45.3
Resists (w/o form of body): S/L 88.7, F/C 61, E 43 :(, NE 78, Psi 90, Toxic 46

I did have the patience to level a dark / stone brute, and a stone/dark tanker. (EDIT: Just realised that the above comment was for Stone/Dark brute. Ah well) They are fantastic fun. They lack a little in AOE, but not as much as you would think. Shadow maul is back all the time, and I usually manage to get three targets in it, and anyway the minions just die in the mud pots, while I ignore their pathetic attacks, and pound on the bosses with extremely effective high damage single target attacks. The self heal is fantastic, the to hit debuff good, the self heal is really fantastic (did I mention that before), the single target damage is good, the self heal is really really good (I think I might have emphasized now just how good it is), the self heal also does really good damage. I have a few stoners (elec/stone, energy/stone - now that did require patience, TW/stone, Staff/stone), none of them are a patch on toughness to the DM/stone, and few seem to do the same damage.
My other favourite toon is super strength/ shield. Without a kinetics along the self damage buff often gets to over 400%, with a forcefeedback proc I am down to around a 4 second footstomp. The joy of leaping in, foot stomp, pause, Shield slam, foot stomp, and watching them fall over three times without hitting me and mostly just dying is indescribable. Hitting single targets with knock out blow / haymaker at 400% damage is also very satisfying. The toon is however extremely fragile. Fragile can be fun though, as most of the survival comes to foot stomp / first aid / foot stomp, so that the baddies are falling over and not interrupting your self heal.
Staff / Dark armor I have enjoyed as well although I had to rest quite a lot. The synergies are very good. Staff gives melee defence, extra damage resistance, and lots of stun. There is also the Rule Of Cool, Cool things are more fun. The staff graphics are quite fun. When you get to obscuring gloom and are stun locking bosses, the fun just increases.
I note the enthusiasm above for invulnerability. I don't share it, it seems seriously lacking in .. well .. invulnerability. High end content seems to be loads of psi, plenty of toxic from those annoying arachnos, and huge amounts of energy plus defence debuffs. I am always worried if the main tank is invulnerability, and play much more defensively. -
One of my toons has turned into my favourite. It started as a tanker Stone/Dark Melee, when AE first appeared. I was awed at it's toughness: able to tank +4/x8 only bosses. When everyone else wiped, my hp and end bar didn't move.
I was less than enthused by its damage however, as I could solo hardly any level of difficulty, as my damage was less than most interesting things regen.
Given that it's toughness was way over what was needed, I started an identically named and looking toon on a different server that was a brute. Given that COH has a simple rule that is "Brutes have more fun", I was not too surprised that this toon was more exciting to play than the tanker. I didn't expect however for it be SO good. My damage is 4 to 5 times higher than the tanker (the tanker only stayed in granite, and didn't have rage, and had cheap IOs like siphon insight in many attacks), and the toon is "tough enough"
My play style is that when soloing, or vs easy content (and most content is easy for this toon), I am not in granite form. Quite often I will leave roots off, and just use break frees as softcapped or near soft capped defences mean that most mezzs just miss, and leaping is always cool. When in serious mode (pulling AVs in trials, or tanking the warworks adds in trials) I flip to granite. I don't really care about movement speed in granite, as teleport exists (I don't have any problems even in SLAMs/Keyes chasing after / leaping away from the AVs when craziness happens)
At the moment I am mostly doing trials / task forces, although I am gradually acquiring accolades.
I am about to respec to tweak the build. At the moment my defences are
S/L def: 50.2
E/NE : 42.08
Psi : 41.33
F/C only 23.53
I don't bother with brimstone armor (if its gets hot...granite exists)
In granite:
S/L: 56.67
E/NE 47.3
F/C: 47.3
Psi: 14.45
With cardiac, my resists are S/L 90%, most others around 66%
So my problem is that in normal mode, my defences are nearly softcapped. The difference between nearly softcapped and actually softcapped is quite high. However in incarnate content the high S/L defence is very nice.
I am about to spend a load of influence tweaking the toon, and I would appreciate advice on the best way to do this. Mostly my goal is to be tough: as a brute damage seems to take care of itself.

Note in both builds that the concealment power in MIDs doesn't show the "in combat" value -
Well thank you for the input.
I loaded them into Mids and I am torn.
I think the best thing to do is to try out a couple on the test server: that way I don't waste a couple of billion influence.
I really like wormhole, so I would tweak the AV killing build into having it. I do like the status protection quite a lot, and the idea of having a confuse bubble around me is amusing.
My observation is that defence is nice (very nice), but in Incarnate content there are a lot of debuffs / as well as a lot of people giving you def. My shield brute is extremely fragile in the trials, as his defence keeps getting shot to bits, while my stoner laughs and takes it on his extremely damage resistant chin. The idea of having quite a lot of damage resistance, capped with surge of power is extremely attractive too.
If this sounds like "You don't know what you want", that statement is true. Since the toon is only 30ish at the moment (and having a blast levelling) I guess I will get to 50, then come back to this thread and agonise for a few hours. I might also have a better idea of what makes a survivable build for incarnate content -
As no one has responded, I'll add to this to raise it back to the front of the queue
I too have the cognitive at tier 3 on my DM/Stone tanker. I was hoping to see lots of purple bubbles around peoples heads. I too have yet to see it in a single enemy.
The thoughts I have had are- Is it only a level 1 proc, so only works if stacked with another confuse
- Does it work, but have a different (or none) visual effect
- Is it just bust
-
Thanks for the quick reply
I looked at the changes and they are interesting: quite a lot extra defense in exchange for a drop in damage resistance. I particularly like the high S/L defense, and the fact that when faded S/L and ranged are up at incarnate softcap level and the seismic smash fits in well with the grav/ theme of seriously high single target control and damage.
I use the theft of essence in my /dark brutes/scrappers and stalkers (I like /dark quite a lot) and it is fantastic: turns dark regen into an endurance generating power, but that's because it procs a lot. I've never thought of putting it in single target heals. I'm adding it now, and will see how it works!
I've never used the numinas / perf shifter (although I have sold hundreds on the auction house...lots of nice money there), as I don't really know how they work. Are they a lot better than just slotting stamina? -
Normally when I create a character, I search the forums. I haven't had a lot of success with Grav/Dark, so I thought I would post a build to see it ripped apart.
My first level 50 was ill/rad, but that was (far too many) years ago, and I haven't played controllers much. Every now and then I tried creating a gravity controller, but I always ended up deleting them. Now that gravity has had a serious buff, I though I would try it, and I have been pleasantly surprised. Given that /dark is new, I thought I would try that too and have been delighted with it. Currently I am turning into a bit of a tank, and at level 20 managed to tank the synapse tf (admittedly at +0/0) with little difficulty. I am thus tempted to see just how good a tank the grav/dark can be. I would like to be good enough to tank the BAF adds on my own.
My goals are:
Softcapped defences (ideally vs incarnate)
High damage resistance
Decent healing (twilight grasp / soul absorbtion)
I would like mezz resistance, but that is looking hard
An alternative epic power pool I considered was Primal forces, so that I could actually perhaps control the many bosses in high end content, but I don't know if that actually works well, and there is something nice about being a controller, and not being fragile.
