Grav/Dark build

Normally when I create a character, I search the forums. I haven't had a lot of success with Grav/Dark, so I thought I would post a build to see it ripped apart.

My first level 50 was ill/rad, but that was (far too many) years ago, and I haven't played controllers much. Every now and then I tried creating a gravity controller, but I always ended up deleting them. Now that gravity has had a serious buff, I though I would try it, and I have been pleasantly surprised. Given that /dark is new, I thought I would try that too and have been delighted with it. Currently I am turning into a bit of a tank, and at level 20 managed to tank the synapse tf (admittedly at +0/0) with little difficulty. I am thus tempted to see just how good a tank the grav/dark can be. I would like to be good enough to tank the BAF adds on my own.

My goals are:
Softcapped defences (ideally vs incarnate)
High damage resistance
Decent healing (twilight grasp / soul absorbtion)
I would like mezz resistance, but that is looking hard

An alternative epic power pool I considered was Primal forces, so that I could actually perhaps control the many bosses in high end content, but I don't know if that actually works well, and there is something nice about being a controller, and not being fragile.

Stone armor helps quite a bit.. I changed your build around and turned off Fade as it's only got a 15 second up-time every 75 seconds, leaving you with roughly a minute to defend yourself without it's benefit. Otherwise it's a very good build... oh, and a personal favorite trick of mine, a perf shifter +end proc in endurance, numina's proc in health and a theft of essence +end proc in Twilight's grasp. I tried the Primal forces mastery... but I really didn't like the lack of defense I was left with in the end. (personal preference there anyway)

This is with stone mastery:

Thanks for the quick reply

I looked at the changes and they are interesting: quite a lot extra defense in exchange for a drop in damage resistance. I particularly like the high S/L defense, and the fact that when faded S/L and ranged are up at incarnate softcap level and the seismic smash fits in well with the grav/ theme of seriously high single target control and damage.

I use the theft of essence in my /dark brutes/scrappers and stalkers (I like /dark quite a lot) and it is fantastic: turns dark regen into an endurance generating power, but that's because it procs a lot. I've never thought of putting it in single target heals. I'm adding it now, and will see how it works!

I've never used the numinas / perf shifter (although I have sold hundreds on the auction house...lots of nice money there), as I don't really know how they work. Are they a lot better than just slotting stamina?

After not using them for years I slotted them on a SS/Dark Brute after trying tons of things to solve his end issues. The difference was insane. I use them on almost every build now, especially the perf shifter ... one awesome combo is a perf shifter & 2 energy manipulators. Good recovery for 3 slots.

Glad you like the changes. It's a tight build to begin with...i just prefer not being hit to resisting a hard hit.

You may want to update your mids, Fade was changed to a 60 second duration with 210 second base recharge, which can be permad. The way I'd build a grav/dark troller, or any /dark troller with a primary that has an aoe immobilize is to go for a recharge intensive, aoe killing build that's soft capped to regular content (45%). As the goal is to get incarnate soft cap, I can't quite post a good build for it, but I might suggest trying the agility alpha which will boost your def and recharge at the same time, should definitely help reaching incarnate soft cap, or at the least make it easier to do so.

Personally I don't think a theft of essence proc is needed when you will be able to run absorption, but could prove useful on just AV fights. For mez protection, T3 clarion helps out a lot and you won't need to go psi mastery for indomitable will. As another side note, it may be worth while to soft cap positional defense as opposed to focusing on typed. Should offer better overall protection to everything since shadow fall, fade, weave, cj, maneuvers and such aren't specific and with the controller ATO offering 5% range defense.

It does... I stand corrected (I'd forgotten to update mids after the last patch). Since that's the case, i'd take one slot out of Howling twilight and one out of Darkest night and put them into fade with rech IOs. I'd replace the set in Howling with a Hami-o (Nucleolus Exposure) and put the Proc from Deflated Ego in Darkest Night.

That gives fade a 1.72 second down-time, accuracy to Howling twilight, and a recovery debuff to darkest night. I'd agree with the Agility in the Alpha... best of both worlds there.

Anyway, that's my .02 ... hope it helps.

Well I would love to talk about your build not to say anything bad about it , But for a Controller with massive control (Grav/Earth) Psy mastery is a great way to go to save your self some status protection, and everyone knows psy mastery can cap Def/res just as easy as Stone. So if you would like to know more id love to show u what i mean

Edit: Also IMO not getting GDF, is a big big big mistake.

Hi siran, here's a build i adapted from a fire/dark build i found on the controller forum some where, it has soft capped ranged, aoe, fire/cold and energy but melee and s/l is 40% but with the high resists and sa u should be ok, plus its made for soloing 54 av's so it should be quite durable. by proc'ing the st hold and immb you can get some serious damage.

Well thank you for the input.

I loaded them into Mids and I am torn.

I think the best thing to do is to try out a couple on the test server: that way I don't waste a couple of billion influence.

I really like wormhole, so I would tweak the AV killing build into having it. I do like the status protection quite a lot, and the idea of having a confuse bubble around me is amusing.

My observation is that defence is nice (very nice), but in Incarnate content there are a lot of debuffs / as well as a lot of people giving you def. My shield brute is extremely fragile in the trials, as his defence keeps getting shot to bits, while my stoner laughs and takes it on his extremely damage resistant chin. The idea of having quite a lot of damage resistance, capped with surge of power is extremely attractive too.

If this sounds like "You don't know what you want", that statement is true. Since the toon is only 30ish at the moment (and having a blast levelling) I guess I will get to 50, then come back to this thread and agonise for a few hours. I might also have a better idea of what makes a survivable build for incarnate content
