Quote:Good question. I can't think of a single one either. It's always resistance to lethal/smashing. Not one or the other.I have to agree with a lot of the posters, that just because broadsword and katana do lethal damage this shouldn't mean a wooden sword skin is out. The animations (ie how someone would wield a wooden sword) would fit, even if the damage type wouldn't. Who cares?
Well, the devs seem to, as they said that they'd not add skins for a damage type that didn't match the weapon type...
Except, last I checked the sai was still an option under dual blades... Hmm. A smashing weapon that looks kinda blade-like that can do lethal damage..... Already in the game. So, why again, not others?
If we can be expected to suspend disbelief on teleports to hospitals, people that can fly, and hundreds of other ways we use our imaginations to maintain the illusion that is this game, I can surely just imagine the lethal damage from a boken as smashing damage instead.
And lastly, is there any real difference (in game I mean, not in the real world, I know in RL the differences are significant) between smashing and lethal damage. Is there anyone or anything out there that has a higher resistance or defense level to smashing than to lethal? Or vice-versa? I can't think of any, but there may be one or two. But hardly enough to make it an issue, in my opinion.
I dont know. The whole subject seems rather stupid. The logic behind it. "This is a world where people can fly and you can use lethal weapons and not kill anyone" So in this regard they suspend physics but then they say "We aren't putting smashing weapons into a lethal set because smashing weapons do smashing damage".
Um... kind of picking and choosing physics there. In this regard, really, we then can't have a logical arguement to convince them. If you pick and choose where you want to suspend belief and not have a set line, it becomes problematic.
In the end ask yourself. Would you rather put together a whole new set (lets say duel smashing) and have it play and look exactly like Duel Blades, just so it can deal smashing damage instead of lethal (especially when smashing/lethal are placed together constantly)
or
would you rather just put a simple option in there?
I find it rather funny that all the time people RP that they are using the flat of the blade. Technically that is blunt force, aka smashing damage. So we can use weapons and RP we are doing Smashing Damage but we can't RP using a smashing damage weapon that we are doing smashing damage?
I think the logic for not putting the skin in there is rather flawed and illogical aswell.

Quote:This is odd. Being that I'm not a policeman, I don't know, but absolutely every documentary I've seen has had trained policemen talk about limb shots and make that a point. I'm not sure where beanbags enter the picture, given that this isn't a strike team entering a room, it's a policeman when a civilian becomes threatening. Say someone's coming onto a cop with a pipe. Is the policeman really going to go from verbal warning to two shots, centre-mass?
All police officers and law enforcement agents are trained to use there firearms for lethal purposes. You may have heard about limb shots after the fact.... meaning after they aimed for the torso but missed and hit a limb. Still they are trained to only fire for a killshot. Anything less and they would be stripped of their badge. -
Quote:I remember the 'nothing that seems like it would do a different damage type as a weapon skin' argument, and it annoyed me back when it was set as much as it does now.
Tsalorian weapons don't add energy damage to your attacks. An electrically crackling Warhammer wouldn't either. A flaming sword? Nope. Just straight Smethal damage. I think that having a wooden sword isn't THAT ridiculous.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~
Hero A: *swings a wooden sword*
Villain: Argh! Hey, what the hell? My combat window says that's lethal damage!
Hero A: Nope. Wooden sword.
Villain: Ahhh. I getcha. *wink* *Theatrically reels from the 'concussive blow'*
Hero B: *fires an Assault Rifle*
Villain: Argh! I'm bleeding! Oh, right through the gut! I'm gonna die!
Hero B: Actually, they're 'Rubber Bullets'.
Villain: Oh, okay then. Argh, aaah, these bruises! I'm getting dizzy! I'm gonna pass out!
Hero C: *Throws a fireball*
Villain: Oh god, I'm on fire! Stop! Drop! Roll!
Hero C: Actually, that's a summoned steam elemental.
Villain: Oh, okay then. Err. I'm damp and soggy? What?
Hero C: You choke on it and pass out.
Villain: Oooooh. Gasp! Gasp! I can't breathe! *whud*
Related aside: My Katana Scrapper has a macro'd taunt that quotes Sigfried from Soul Calibur upon victory. "I avoided your vitals. You'll live."
In real life, roughing up a thug with a bladed weapon just doesn't work. I'm aware of that, and know that even non-fatal wounds like that would risk accidental murder. I just handwave it because City of Heroes isn't very deconstructionist. It doesn't penalize you for doing stuff that is very classically heroic but in real life is really dumb.
That's why I don't call out people for wearing flashy but impractical spandex, or tell them that their capes will get stuck in a jet engine (Ala Incredibles, loved the movie, hated that sequence).
I agree.
On another note. Who says I cant cut with a wooden sword? I can't RP that I have a magical boken that seems all innocent but actually cuts through anything?
Ever heard of splinters? I can't cut you with my splinters?
I can't use a shovel or a something else to cut? Shovels can freakin cut! Trust me, I know... :P
The other thing is... and probably the MAIN point to consider in all of this is...
IF people want bokken or those Esckima sticks, why make a whole nother set, with the same or EXTREMELY similair animations, but change the damage from lethal to smashing?
Seems more logical to just give the look to the current sets, thereby saving the time and energy and make more unique sets.
I think thats probably the main point in this. It saves time, energy and attention (which all equals money) and will make people happy.
Quote:Excellent point!More choice in powersets and skins is always good - but 'til then there's imagination. You can come up with a rationale for any set being non-lethal if you don't trust the teleportation network.
BTW I don't really hold that powersets with blades can't be given smashing skins and vice versa - surely the damage types have been slightly disjointed from the fx with power spectrum (still think it should have been going rouge).
Now you can have negative energy looking bright and cheery and normal energy looking dark and pretty darn negative. Is blue fire really fire? It could be some sort of mental illusion or spirit fire, but the damage type is still just 'fire'.
If that's possible I don't really see the issue with having wooden swords/batons/black puddings/tickling sticks available as skins for dual swords.
So why are there still so many kidnaps? Who would give in to the kidnapper's demands?
Quote:Actually, I RP my main, a completely human hero (cept for a psychic ability to sense certain things but its very passive) has never taking down those dudes himself. He is only street thugs really. Sometimes taking out a single Rikti or something. He can go up against Outcasts and stuff but he has to remain very sneaky and smart about it and use throwing stars, bolos, nets and web grenade type things to help him.See, the problem is your putting to much thought of real world physics into a fictional setting.
You can RP your hero killing them instead of them being teleported off VERY easily, if so desired.
But what I find interresting is all this talk of realism. Realistically, those normal human, just know martial arts with peaked human agility, is going to lose to that invulnerable to physical damage, super strong mutant.
Batman will never beat Superman in a fist fight (even if the cartoons/comics show that he holds his own, even without resorting to kryptonite).
But I bet plenty of people still RP their normal human, beating the hell out of Inferno and winning.
Two way streak imo on that realism kick, and people seem to only complain about one way.
He can only take down Inferno or others on a team. In these cases he is more tactical support and crowd control. Also he may try jumping them from behind and pulling out real quick. He doesnt actually stand there kicking. Even though game mechanic wise, thats realy all a scrapper is there for. -
Quote:I Agree with you. I very much wish we had non-lethal weapon options. It would be both practical and funny at times. For funny, I imagine a paintball gun as an option in assault rifle.I've been thinking about this for a while.
I had a blaster and I gave him fire powers simply because I thought they looked cool. But it caused problems for me, because to keep my interst, I have to have a good "feel" for the character, often semi-roleplaying them in my head. Given that this blaster was a teenager and a kind of Peter Parker personality, I really didn't think it fit him to go around burning people to death. I came up with some really lame excuse that he was burning off the oxygen around his opponents, causing them to black out without any lasting harm done. Weak.
I remade him as an energy blaster, figuring he could control the concussive force, not doing to much harm to weaker opponents. This was an old character who I recently started playing again.
Anyhow, the whole situation got me thinking about the powersets and thinking about the newer sets and the upcoming ones. They added things like dual-blades and are adding pistols. I'd love to see more non-lethal options. We can currently burn people, shoot them full of holes, slice them into pieces and just otherwise arrest them to death (yeah, I know I can use "the flat of the blade", but come on...)
I would have liked to have bokken under katana options, or escrima sticks under dual blades, but I am told the devs said they would never do that. I'm not sure why. I think dual blades would be great with non-lethal weapons. A staff set would be nice too, but I have seen that asked for a number of times and it seems that a majority of people have no interest in it.
Does anyone else think it might be nice to have new powersets that allow us to not kill opponents? Or am I in the minority, thinking that heroes don't need to kill?
But still, I dont know about doing a lot of new power sets that are non lethal. I mean even escrima sticks are extremely deadly. You hit the guy in the head or the neck, he's gonna be dead instantly (regardless on how quickly the doctors can pull him off of the TP pad and setup in the ER). Infact, in many instances you could say bladed weapons are safer than blunt objects.
But diversity is good and more weapon objections in general is fantastic. So these should be added.
Quarterstaff is one that Jack Emmert mentioned a few months after CoH started and I am still waiting for it. I like the idea of it aswell as it being filled with attacks that hit pretty much everything around you.
Quote:These were manly tears btw. Just clarifying this.On a mountain top he stands. The wind blows strongly with a cold bitterness. Closer to the edge he moves, below him a drop incalculable from his perception, the ground disappears in clouds below him. Pebbles fall off the side as his feet reach the edge. Around him it is clear but his view is of clouds. The blue sky breaks through as the sun shines down upon him. As the wind picks up, pushing him away from the edge, he protrudes his chest out strong and big as he lets it out:
"I16 CLOSED BETA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
His voice trails off. All goes quiet as the wind dies and the clouds move to block the sky and all the sun's gaze. A moment later he falls to his knees with his head down low. Tears roll down his face and fall of the edge of the cliff has he dreams of all the amazing things he can not experience, of all the things he wishes he could help test and give feedback.
For he has not yet been invited to i16 closed beta.
What about simply "Flyman" for a title? Or keep the name of that title and make your website "flymancomics.com" or... www.ADITLOAH.com ?
The comic book creator is gone unfortunatly. But there are a few very rare options out there for you.
The main one that people are falling in love with is Comic Life created for the mac but they do have a windows version of it now,. Its a pretty good program with alot of customizability.
http://plasq.com/comiclife-win
Since more than one seemed interesting, I'll just link this here. Its not done of course but at least whats on there so far will interest you.
http://cohcomicindex.com/home/cohcom...itle=Main_Page
Its a wiki site I was working on but unforutnatly setting it up is proving very very difficult on my own. php is a pain for me (who doesnt even really know html either) and I am trying to figure out security options and how to fully use it (like rollbacks and such) before I open it up the wide open public.
I am also trying to figure out how to allow pdf files to upload with the jpegs and other image upload stuff as well as figuring out how to increase the max mb upload from whatever it is now to something that can handle the average fan made comic (maybe 20mb... or 25mb just to be safe)
But again, unforturnalty I took on a project that is out of my league for myself alone and that sucks...
But its here for situations like this.
If you look under the Author's Pages on the front page there, youll see several things like Tools & Programs, Hosting and Storage and Guides & Info.
It has some good info on it but I also havnt uploaded everything I possibly could. There are a lot of cool resources for game comic makers out there. -
For hosting there are options.
For instance www.cohcomics.com can do it.
There is also us at the CCC, www.cohcomicindex.com
And others like www.issuu.com and photobucket.
Well yeah, thats why its been scaled back as I said. It went from 25+ and will now be about 15 to 20 issues. I've already edited stuff out and condensed stuff down. Stuff that was going to be 3 issues is now 2 issues and such.
Number of panels on page doesnt change anything either since if I tried to make more frames and less pages, I still have the same amount of screen shots. Besides, I want each issue to be a normal length comic book.
I could lessen frames for each page but then thats a massive huge quality turn to the ground. If that occures than dialogue piles up (which people dont tend to like) and then you have the story not fully being told, the key moments, turns, etc.
My main thing right now is the picture quality. Its really the only thing left I can compromise but then the question is how much? I have a shot with Sin Stalker chasing Madcap. My original camera angle is a bit too far back... so I have two choices now. Spend the time redoing that entire shot or use the shot and zoom in more to get the proper framing, etc. This however means pixelation to a greater degree than what would be if the camera was better...
Another area not yet compromised would be editing. I could just not worry about edits and typoes and stuff as much, leave them in there?
Just not sure what to do. Helps hearing these opinions though. Helps to get me thinking on the subject with all the angles and such that comes with it. -
Quote:Just awesome.As I sit here to wait for the servers to come back up, it struck me that I could write a little post about Sister Flame.
Sister Flame is the online handle of my middle daughter, currently six years old. She's been playing City of Heroes since she was 4 and 1/2. It was only over the last year we began to team together with my two accounts and have a lot of fun. I thought I let you know what Sister Flame has learned from CoX.
(1) Flame Learned To Read
At the tender age of five, I let Flame play on my second account on my laptop beside me. For a while, I had to tell her what the train destiantions were, what the NPCs were saying and what the villains name were.
It was only mere months before Flame didn't need my help anymore. We were playing one summer evening and I noticed that she wasn't asking me to read things. I looked over at her screen and watched her for a bit. I was intrigued she knew where to go.
"Need any help reading, honey?" I asked.
"Nope. I can read nope. That says Atlas Park and that says Steel Canyon. Those are Clockworks, but I like calling them Clickey Clacks." she replied quite happilly.
Her teacher was quite surprised at the headstart she had on her reading skills. When I informed the teacher that Flame's headstart was the result of playing a superhero online game, I got the weirdest look. Oh well.
Now, at six, I can hear Flame reading slowly over the mission text and the NPC dialogue. She cannot type yet, but if we get on a team together, I usually do the talking for both of us.
(2) Attitude Matters; Not Age.
From time to time, I get a little impatient with my daughters. I do recall the one evening I was unwell, but Flame wanted to play CoH and wanted to get on a big team.
"I'm too sick to play, so you'll have to do it by yourself." I told her, thinking that she'd never figure it out or get booted quickly if she did get invited to a team.
I laid down on the bed and closed my eyes to rest. Twenty minutes later, I stretched and asked Flame how she was doing.
"Good. I am in a big team." she told me.
"Oh yeah?" I asked.
"Yep. People keep joinging, but I think they're playing soccer." she says.
"Why is that?"
"I keep seeing the word 'kick'."
I rolled off the bed and scrolled back through the chat. Apart from several comments about Flame's excellent control and attack with her Fire Blaster, I see several conversations/arguments with some idiots who joined the team and did something really stupid. Most of them wound up being kicked by the leader. I also notice that every so often, Flame has written 'ty'.
"What's the 'ty' for?" I asked.
"Thank you. You type it sometimes. Everytime I see 'Flame', I type it. They like it."
I watched Flame play for another twenty minutes. No one in the group had a clue to her age and she played her role as any good team member should: waiting for 'Go' or 'Ready' before attacking, saving her Rain of Fire for large groups and giving inspirations to thoes that needed it.
Finally, I had to type a message for Flame.
"Thank you all for the team. This is Flame's dad. She has to get up for Grade 1 tomorrow and needs to go to bed. She says you were all great."
I still love typing that message and watching the responses. Most are 'lol' or 'what?!'. One time, a player typed 'Wow. I wonder if my poodle could play.'. All in good fun.
(3) Playing Coh Is Just Like Playing House a.k.a Imagination Is Power.
Flame has always had a decent imagination, but it has improved a lot since she has been playing Coh. She likes to spin stories about her toons and give them a backstory. This has translated well to her schoolwork when she has been asked to do creative writing assignments. She has also developed a healthy curiousity into some of the groups in CoH. Some of the things she has asked me are:
"Why do Skulls hang out in Perez Park?"
"How come the Clockworks don't attack cars or make nasty cars to attack people?"
"Why are Trolls green?"
"Where do the Outcasts get their power?"
Now, she makes up toons with funny names (to us anyways), but good backgrounds. Among some of her mains are Takes Care Of Pets (A MM with two mercenaries: Cat, Dog), Takes Care Of Bats (A PB with Bat Wings) and of course, Sister Flame (a Fire Blaster with her partner, Brother Frost [me]).
So, if you ever run across a Fire Blaster named Sister Flame on Freedom, chances are its my daughter havign fun, but learning many things at the same time. Feel free to team with her, but don't be a "poopyhead" (her words, not mind).
Ciao!
P.S. She is working on her typing skills, so if you see her say "Go", "Go", "Go" about twenty times, don't worry. It's only 1 of about 100 words she can spell. -
I'll be trying to go there this year since I didnt have enough funds for Comic-Con this year.
Just need to figure out if I truely will have enough money to make it out there and how. -
Seems kind of funny but not really sure why that was done. I wonder what he thinks when he visits the forums?
