  1. Currently the model that Paragon have seems to be working fine: Monthly subs and a booster pack every few months seems to generate some healthy revenue for them, and the lowish sub fee, regular free issues and vet rewards keeps people subscribed. They'd have to be very very sure that changing that model would benefit the game.

As things stand, most players seem to subscribe for a good while, most buy most boosters (we'll ignore Party pack for the purpose of this argument) and most bought GR. It seems despite the doom-sayers that this old game has some life left in it and change for its own sake is rarely wise.

  3. I'm initially a touch torn by the question so I'll try and answer in my own way.

I tend not to be a min/max player and I don't actually consider myself to be much cop at soloing - partly because I don't enjoy playing the solo game and partly because I play squishies a lot. My main is an all elec blaster - that should tell you about where I'm at on that score.

I think there's two problems here: Design vs Concept.

Some people want to be able to solo all the content, which is fair enough it's how they want to play, and being able to do so should be achievable for them. Personally I don't, I want to be in a team that fights tough battles and comes down to the nail biting finish. The thought that we actually might not manage it in the final analysis gives a much bigger reward if we actually do. I don't specifically set out to fail, but steam rollering the "end of level bad guy" is a bit lame in my eyes.

Conceptually I love the idea of a team coming together to save the planet. That has lived with me ever since I read one of the earliest Fantastic Four comics when I was about 7 with the Mole Man's monsters on the cover. It was David vs Goliath and captured my imagination. 40 years later that feeling still resonates with me, the little guys vs the big. I love the concept and that's what many comics are about - Spider-man & Daredevil for example have very limited power but manage to win the day against most adversaries, and it's a challenge for them. Batman and Iron Man just get out their latest invention and blast the interloper to kingdom come with their industrial might. But it takes a team working in harmony to defeat Galactus, Proteus or some of the other great threats - and in many ways that's where the excitement comes from. This says it all for me:

    Quote:
And there came a day unlike any other, when Earth's mightiest heroes and heroines found themselves united against a common threat! On that day the Avengers were born - to fight the foes no single superhero could withstand!
    'Nuff said, O true believer!

There's a further complication: Which AV is the "real deal"? There's at least 3 iterations of Ghost Widow, for example and they are all quite different. The version in RV is very different to the one in her arc and different again to the STF version. So even soloing one, have you soloed "the real one"?

Would I like to solo an AV and/or GM? Probably not because in my view that makes them too cheap. To me, heroism is about going up against the long odds and beating them but then again I kinda get where Jack was coming from and I know that wasn't a popular view.
  4. I've thought long and hard about this and I've come to the following conclusion:

We'll get what we're given and bloody well like it whether we wanted it or not!
  5. All my lowbies are Praetorians... I was never a fan of low Villain content, and I've done the Hollows and the other Hero content many times. But I'm loving the content in Praetoria and enjoying all the new arcs

    Event Fatigue

I'd pretty well disagree with all the OPs points.

Let's not forget they are entirely optional and easily avoided if you don't want to take part in them and personally I really enjoy the Rikti raids, the zombie invasions and I find the Halloween banners to be one of the best events, perhaps because it does need a bit of coordination.

I cannot remember when we last had regular Rikti raids on Defiant and I've been wanting the badges on a few toons and I've missed them despite the fact that the LGTF gets run pretty frequently.

They are all a lot of fun and the frequency is about right.

Edited to add that on the day that Paul the Octopus died, how can you complain about too many Luscas?

    Riff,

No worries. I have honor of teaming with you here and there. I also want to focus those two mentioned above 'till I get them to the Paragon. Have fun with your trio and give me a shout if you need a filler for starting TFs or other things.

Thanks Knightly, let me know how you get on We may well need your help on our other trio cuz one of our member has seemingly gone AWOL

I'm thinking if we've got you and Notty tanking with your pets and some good debuff... I might go very left field and play something like a rad/MM blaster. Damage and debuffs in one tasty package.
  11. Glad to see there's some support for this. I *think* we've got Grouchy involved in the new Trio, but here's an idea... how about you others who are interested also getting another trio started and we can start at the same time and compare notes as we go?
  12. Best of luck mate and hope to see you when you're back

I went to Uni at 33 and had a fantastic time! Hope you will be able to say the same Good luck with whatever you're reading too.
  13. I'm still loving I18 and GR... I would be quite happy for I19 to come after xmas but I'm almost certainly in the minority.

Inherent fitness isn't going to change the game that much for vets who know how to play lowbies anyhow and isn't going to do a huge amount to help new players who are just getting to grips with the system. It's a "nice to have" but I suspect it's not gonna change the game that much and many people will be overestimating the effects, rather as they imagined the impact that inventions would have on End use.

What I find very surprising is this: I play almost every day, for a few hours each go, and I'm still working through new content I've not encountered before from GR. So far as I can tell there's still a lot for me to do here, so why some people seem bored with GR already is beyond me. I know I19 is the New Shiny and I'm looking forward to a lot of it too but I'm kinda surprised how old hat GR seems to be in some peoples perception.

We're already getting Boosters which offer costumes you CANNOT get without buying the Booster. Wouldn't Boosters that come with an in-game way to earn the bulk of their content be considered an improvement by the opponents of microtransactions? I would think so, but I honestly don't know.
Yeah I think my solution offers the best of both worlds to those who'd buy the boosters and those happy to earn them. However the bean counters at Paragon wouldn't even entertain the idea cuz earning booster items reduces their revenue.
  15. Quick thought: I doubt Paragon Studios would ever try this but I wonder what would happen if they released a costume set that could be purchased immediately for $X or could be earned in game for $0 but some in game kind of equivalent. What revenue would that generate for them compared to those players earning it.

I suspect it would pan out along the lines of half those who wanted it would buy it, and half would earn it and another (I'm guessing a 3rd) wouldn't bother. By dint of being free it may persuade some who don't/won't/can't afford boosters to get it and of course modifiers include the likeability of the outfit, the $cost, the time vs reward cost and a few other variables.

Even if they offered that option there would still be a percentage of players yelling "gief me stoof nao"
  16. It is! Believe me... trioing Romulus is easily doable, Weakened Hamidon not so easy... and GW is a [expletive deleted] on STF... but with side switching is we can also do the villain TFs too.
  17. We've been having so much fun running our crazy troller trio that Notty and I want to try it with a different combo - so we're looking for a 3rd person to come join us for a regular night. We're looking at something like a troller, MM & AN Other... so give us some suggestions if you're interested and the nights you can play.

Most likely Defiant but I guess it's possible on Union too and we'll probably start in Praetoria and do the Resistance arcs, and once we get to 50 trio all the TFs

    • In Taiwan, you can get 24 new pairs of socks and 10 new ties, all for 300 New Taiwan dollars. That amounts to about $9.50 in the United States.
    • For $10, you can buy 350 spinach seeds and the supplies to grow them, which after germinating and growing to maturity, would have a produce department value of $1,746.50 (350 5-oz. bunches at $4.99/bunch).
    • In the United States, $10 can buy about 5 pounds of rice and 3 pounds of beans. At an average of 1 cup of rice a day with bean (protein) supplement, this would feed a person for 20 days.
    • 0.00001775% of a F-15E (adjusted for inflation from 1998 USD).
    • 5 capes and 10 auras for all of the characters on a single account in the MMORPG City of Heroes/City of Villains.
    YMMV, but I'll pass.
I tried a rice cape and an F-15 aura and it didn't look so good
  19. I'm liking this. I think 15 items for the equivalent of $10 is reasonable value

Let's just pretend the party pack never happened

Well like I said it was simply my opinion - but in the same way that some animals have a limited colour range - I see Kheldians as having a base colour and a limited range.

It makes sense to me because with all other ATs, you can have one of 5 origins, whereas with kheldians you get one origin depending on which of the variants you go with. Your force field bubble (to take an example of yours) may be different because it has a machine making it whereas I've cast a spell that gives my forcefield a different hue, and that bloke over there has genes that means his bubbles are pink and blue.

That's just how I see things.
  21. The Mission Transporter power originally allowed level 50s to join a team with a level 1 in the training mish and join them in Outbreak

Because that fundamentally changes the Devs philosophy of the game: VEATS are unlocked. If you could buy a VEAT there would be so many outcries; "HEATs are free why must I pay for a villain epic" would be just one of the "Devs Hate Villains" cries, and there are very few positives that could come from a unique purchasable AT.

This way, the Booster paid for the VEAT, and people who didn't want one, got the other. Win win
