A world with Incarnates at war would be a terrible mess. It could be that the Incarnates of each successive era band together to defeat/imprison the belligerent ones (under an island, under a city's, etc) and then, witnessing the destruction they could cause, withdraw *somewhere else* ... perhaps leaving behind remnanats that can intervene when they detect their old foes awakening.

And then some ask you "Who are you?" whilst the others ask you "What do you want?"
  4. in the words of the late, great Spike Milligna, well known Goon and typing error, "Contraceptives should be used on every conceivable occasion."

I take your point that not all characters are gods, demigods or even vaguely deific and personally I far prefer characters that are "up against it" somewhat, rather than being overpowered.

Some of my characters will go to through the full "incarnate" arc, get everything they can and become far superior than they are now. Others will simply "cherry pick" bits and pieces here, and others still will studiously ignore the incarnate content.

I can explain their abilities in my own mind in a number of ways:
    • They are becoming far more powerful and the Well of the Furies is affecting them, as per the Incarnate Arc
    • They have learned some of the powers of the Incarnates and have managed to replicate some of the Incarnate abilities, perhaps by technology, or mutation or some other means.
    • They have stolen or otherwise come across other incarnate-like artifacts that grant them powers.
    • Having used their powers for many years (I'm close to being a 5 year vet) some of my characters are simply increasing their skill level, through dilligence, hard work, practice and dedication. In the same way that Batman is so uber because he works so bloody hard at it, they get to be that good through single-minded obsession. This allows them to take a further step up in power which is in some ways artificially imposed by the game. Previously the best you could get was a level 50 with a bunch of purple sets and a great build. Now we can go a stage further to represent additional training and diligence.
    • Pure blind luck!
  5. I'm with Damz in that I feel the challenge from many of the task forces we've come to know and love will be minimized - and in fairness, the Devs do have form when it comes to dumbing the game down.

I guess the alternative is to either up the difficulty or have some toons that ain't never gonna be incarnates.

OR... ask the Devs to give us an option when forming a TF. The normal version or "the Incarnate Version" so that we can choose our difficulty level when running it.

Anyone can build a troller with soft-capped def to s/l using Stone, Ice or Mace. Some do it easier than others (+Def aura in Cold, Storm, and of course, FF) but it's possible for anyone. What Sonic gives is solid mez protection and a chance to build up some solid resists (especially with Tough). You could even go down a different path to build up Ranged Def, take a resist shield in the epic and hard cap s/l and have strong resists for whatever else your epic covers. No other controller secondary can do this.

With that, you can focus on your primary powers, without worrying about being mezzed (sleeps excepted of course) or hardly being hit and, when hit, it's like a pin-*****. It also makes you a solid contributor on speed end-game tfs. This is where "My mezzes are my defense" don't work, especially on speed LGTF.

I'll stop with "what Sonic can do for me" and not get into its team buff/debuff contributions, which I think are under-rated too, and again, are quite good for speed tfs (buff and run).

Hey be a contrarian. I'm perfectly ok with that. I wanted to know why people like (or dislike) it and what it works well with but my own experience - and clearly judging by this thread, that's not a unique position - is that it's lacking.

You may have a point about the resists, but it surely didn't feel like it to me. I actually found the whole experience pretty tedious but I am learning, having played other Illusionist that Ill/ doesn't universally work with everything - but most control sets are like that.

I'd like to give it another go, maybe, if I could be convinced it has some viability, but one thing you've not said here is what you'd pair it with and why, and I'd be interested in seeing that response from you
  7. I am thankful for /Trick Arrow. It's without a doubt my favourite set

I agree. I think my experience of it so far has been... dull and uninspiring. It works, after a fashion but offers nothing tangible that other sets don't have, plus lacks any (for want of a better expression) excitement. Most other Controller secondaries offer something cool and different - Storm is uber crazy, Trick Arrow is a jack of all trades, Thermal gives good buffs, debuffs and some useful heals, radiation is the "ultimate takedown" set and cold gives some great slows and debuffs. Sonic, by comparison, gives unmitigated blandness
  9. Some interesting comments thanks guys

I've got an Earth/Thermal at 50 and he's arguably one of my toughest toons - and I've done some pretty crazy stuff with him and come out smiling the other side. I'm not sure that I want to level an Earth/Sonic just to see if it works
  10. going back to my other thread here http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=251043

regarding my Illusion/Sonic I was wondering what primaries go well with it. I've got a couple of Mind/ trollers and they are not strong but can lock down most stuff, even AVs - but with no pet, soloing would be a nightmare.

A pet seems like a good idea, for example hanging sonic rings on Rocky might work or even one of the Buzz twins or Frostie...
  11. I guess you make a fair point. I've got a few other Illusion Trollers and they seem to be far superior even at low level. I don't need to decide her fate immediately because I've got plenty of slots left but it does seem remarkably under powered
  12. Yeah End cost is very high from what I recall and damage is lowlowlow... and I have to say I've never really noticed the extra resistance...

I think I might consign her to history.
  13. Just to say I'm really enjoying my Ill/FF a lot at lvl 30 now. It's a lot of fun to play, quite tough to kill and can take most things down, albeit slowly.

I've not decided for sure what my Epic will be but I suspect something with some good damage and debuffs. I reckon with some shivans & nukes it'd be great for taking out AVs
  14. I'm a little confused because ToonX clearly did use chat to ask for a reinvite... so they must use Chat in some level, or have I misunderstood that?

I cannot say I've heard anyone play like that before but from the way you describe, it's simply a case of them being bloody minded.
  15. So we're very pleased to be able to announce we're officially launching the EERC this DXP weekend with some great events and a few prizes and titles.

We'll kick off tonight at 9pm on Defiant in Pocket D, followed by a visit to Union Pocket D for more of the same at 9.15, so come and be quick to pick up some cool titles and maybe even a costume code or two.

Then tomorrow (Friday) an event on Defiant and a similar event on Union on Satuday! More on those later and nothing is designed to take much time out of your DXP gathering but you will love getting the goodies!

See you tonight in Pocket D
  16. I have an Ill/Sonic at 50. It's not much fun to play because it seems very under powered but I'm relucant to delete it because I rolled her on the 5th Anniversary just before Positron's special address. But as she goes, she feels really weak - makes my Earth/Thermal seem overpowered by comparison and at least he has some great mitigation to compensate for lack of damage.

I like Illusion as a primary but I do feel from my (albeit limited experience thus far) that it needs a secondary that either has a very noticeable effect, and Sonic seems to lack that.

Perhaps I'm wrong but I've never felt it was a hugely successful pairing and frankly I cannot remember ever seeing another, so maybe there's a reason for that
  17. Scarlet Shocker

    Very strange!

Thanks for the input - tried verifying files and the problem still persists
  18. Hey good people

Following the success of a recent event I ran, Avatea was kind enough to ask me to spearhead an EU Events Resource Committee, otherwise known as EERC. Needless to say I was very happy and honoured to oblige and give this great game as much support as I can.

I've been joined by a few others you may well know from these boards, and I'll let them introduce themselves because... well they can tell you more about them than I can – but I think we've got a small team of players who really put themselves out for the game and improve everyone's game experience.

Our brief is very simple: We are here to help arrange events, provide a channel back to the Community Coordinators regarding events you wish to run, and to come up with events that we hope you will enjoy too, and to that end we have a few cool surprises we can maybe share with you along the way and some cool events, competitions and general fun stuff to enhance your time in the City Of Heroes franchise. Sometimes we can even give out the odd prize too!

Some of you know me from the boards and Defiant server but one of our briefs is to “cross-fertilise” and involve the community from both English speaking servers, but for those of you who may not know me, I'm a long term vet, closing on five years in the game and a very regular player with a number of 50s. I'm into pretty well all aspects of the game, PVE, RP, PVP, Badging, AE... you name it. I'm also a big fan of Praetoria – invariably most of my toons start there these days.

We're all very excited by this and have been exercising our grey matter accordingly and we have some cool happenings for you starting this DXP weekend (Jan 11 for those of you reading this in August 2013.)

Those of you have ideas can either IM us individually, or post them in here (this thread'll be stickied by Avatea so will be highly visible) and we can then make sure they get the exposure they deserve.

    Very strange!

    Saw this in Praetoria.

Everything else is rendering correctly so I can't see how this can be an issue at my end but this is just totally odd.
  20. Scarlet Shocker

    Flash

    Thanks for the feedback guys

And yeah I've been thinking of an Ill/TA too.
  21. Scarlet Shocker

    Flash

I've a couple of Illusion trollers now and I'm enjoying them a lot but Flash always seems to give me some issues in slotting. It seems reasonably ineffective as a hold, combined with being a PBAoE, so you have to be in amongst it to get the best out of it.

What's the optimum way to slot it?

Slotting the proc practically ensures that you will confuse ever critter in a mob, bosses included.

I guess it's because it's an AoE confuse already. So once you've got a bunch of peeps confused, held, immobed and ultimately fried, there's not much time for anyone else to catch that confuse. Most people will have caught it by now.

I could be wrong but I see Contagious Confusion as being much more use in an ST Confuse power
  23. This is my build for one I'm working on. The TA component is very similar to my Fire/TA who I have a lot f fun with and is arguably my best toon ever. He has Ice as an APP but she's a villain and I wanted something different - and also I wanted something that will light Oil Slick easily, hence the Mu PPP
