Thanks for the feedback and input chaps. Much appreciated.
New Dawn, I couldn't decide... so I'm going to run two toons; a WP/Dark and an Inv/KM to see how they compare. I'm slowly getting into the melee sets so this is a new area for me. It's not like I don't have enough character slots after all - but those are the two I'm running with currently.
Finduilas, thanks for that build - very useful. I've tweaked it a touch and I'm running with it. The onyl question I have is what would be a good alternative to the dark PPP. I'm not fond of it as a set. I did think Earth for the mezzes or Fire because of Melt Armour - an excellent debuff. -
And by a curious coincidence:
Half a league half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred:
'Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns' he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
Excerpt from Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred Lord Tennyson
Don't forget to wrap up warm and thanks to the OP for the heads up

Quote:"Easy and familiar" often equals "fun." Not always, but often.
Every time I try to form an UG trial, people line up for it. This is not a hated trial. But no incentive exists in this world to make me run Keyes, so I will wish the developers luck with this tactic.... because its like the Green Lantern trying to use his ring on a yellow object.... no impact. But even a failed UG trial can be immensely profitable.
Carrot vs. stick will not make me run Keyes. Bet i'm not alone.
It's not fun. It is "easier & fast" though.
Personally, I far prefer the pre-incarnate high level TFs to the iTrials. But because the iTrials give the rewards they are what gets run. It's tough to even run a WST these days.
But don't confuse fun with grind.
I'm hoping that we're coming towards the conclusion of "end game" and that Posi will soon be distracted by a new shiny to work on that's a lot better than the current post-GR content. -
Quote:I'm still having big reservations about DA, from an aesthetic pov, but I also have an all elec brute that I'm levelling so that will give me some info on that but thanks for the inputEveryone's ranting over Inv and WP, but I have to say, if IO's are being used, then Elec or DA is the way to go. Substantial resist numbers and great heals with IO defense bonuses? Yes please!
My Elec/Stone tank is built to 45% S/L defense. His green bar? Never moves. This is his performance on many TFs and with many enemy groups. More often than not, I pop Energize for the endurance discount.
My DA/Ice/Earth tank is built for 45% S/L/E/N. Again, I never watch my health. You said you weren't worried about damage? Well is this the tank for you! Massive crowd control from the two sets. What I can't get because of aggro cap, I can slow down with -speed and KD powers. -
Quote:You'll come across different enemy types, each type of tank would be more suited to one enemy type than another, what you might be looking for is an answer to everything type of tanker. Well most people might agree that Smash and Lethal are the two most common damage types in game and that might give you an answer.
The Invuln build of yours can't be uploaded easily, try it yaself.
The Willpower build could of been better, you can have 45% to all but Psi, between 30 and 35% def to psi and a decent amount of +hitpoints.
When it comes to Invulns you could have to face an enemy or enemy group now and then you might dread, where as with Willpower you might see every group as roughly the same, the big thing to worry about is alphas or heavy hits, both of which don't have to happen, enemies can only do what you or the team allow them to do.
Ok I've fixed the data link (I think)
I'd be interested in what your ideas for my WP - I coujdln't get numbers like you are suggesting. -
Quote:And this is why I support Invulnerability's substantial Resistance, with a layer of Defense on top. Willpower has some Resistance and some Defense, but it relies on +Hit-Points and +Regeneration to stay upright. In either case, a Defense failure won't put you on the floor.
Be Well!
Fireheart
Thanks. That's the question I'm not able to answer on paper: Which would win? Maybe I'll make each toon in the MA and see what the outcome is -
here's the otehr option:

Ok I've been playing with Mids and I've come up with two potential options (in fact I think I might run them side by side.)
I'd appreciate some feedback but please be gentle with me... I'm extremely inexperienced with tanks and I'm not that good with Mids either.
Here's the first option:

Quote:I don't have any fiendsAnyone can make any combination of power picks shine if they know the ins and outs of the game well enough without resorting to specially made teams etc.
Honestly someone could spout of how so so can't tank such and such, but that'll just get proven wrong.
When it comes to specifics, whereby you want a tank that does a certain thing particularly well foresaking other areas then each tank does something specific.
Defense sets aren't necessarily beneath resistance sets because resistance sets can get +def IOs. When it comes to getting the tankers job done they can actually do the job, Brutes can and even Scrappers can do the job, not as well in some scenarios but still, the job gets done. Somethings are more challenging for certain types, in a game where challenges become less and less, do something your scared off.
I can't rate a player because they picked a stonetank and turned up. I'd rate a player because they picked a concept and made it shine. Sometimes I just rate intent, sometimes you can see a person trying, and keep trying but whether or not the team work is properly in place, or whether or not individual playstyles of everyone in a pug match up is a different matter.
The OP should look at their friends, anything they see from anyone? Is there someone doing the sort of thing they want to do with their tank with a powerset that doesn't cover up the costume? -
Quote:Build budget potentially makes a big difference here so what are your constraints?
Good question. Run from 1-50 to get a feel from it. I'm not one for PL'ing or farming to any great extent and I'd wanna learn how this toon works.
If it's fun at 50 then incarnate and IOs...
If I'm sounding vague it's because I am. But I've never "Purpled" out a toon cuz I don't think Purples are worth it in every set. Maybe one power but I find a rounded approach works better.
combine that with market price fluctuations and I'll admit I have no clue. But if it's working and fun I will spend a lot on it. If it's pants it won't get very far at all -
I don't know how many of you read my melee thread in the General Discussion, but as a result of that it inspired me to revisit a concept that I've had going for a while.
I want to make something that's as damned near possible indestructible. I'm not worried about damage or much else but I do want a toon that can take almost all that's thrown at me an come through with positive hitpoints.
Here are the qualifiers:
I don't want a stone tank. I don't like the look of stone and given that my char is female I want her to remain looking like a human female not some "poor man's Thing" - so anything that perverts the look (I've a great outfit for her) is a no-no. (Dark Armour is probably out for this reason too but I don't honestly expect anyone to tell me to go for that)
I don't want Super Reflexes. That's simply because I've got a brute at 50 with /SR and although it's good I'm not keen to play the same toon in a differnt variant. I would reconsider this if there was a significant consensus that suggested SR was the best set to choose
What I'm aiming to achieve is maximum survivability under normal gameplay conditions - I'm not asking for uberuberuber but my primary should be focussed towards giving me that survivable thing.
As I've pointed out... I'm a novice with tanks but this is interesting to me so I'd welcome any feedback.
Cheers -
Ok, joking aside and despite my earlier silliness, I think I kind of understand what the OP means.
I've noticed a certain level of shrillness if you can put it like that as there is a realignment of many players on the VIP server, returning players and brand new players.
I wouldn't call it toxicity but I think it's almost like the reset button has been pressed for many and people are finding their own level in a new environment and that sometimes means people are, how can I put this... "unnecessarily assertive"
There've been a lot of server changes recently, from the list merge, Freedom, Exalted etc and it's bound to have an effect given that there's are a lot of people trying to rub shoulders with relative strangers.
Once new things settle down, new communities form and people find their place I expect things will quieten down a lot. -
Quote:"All of us"? Speak for yourself, stumblebum. They could probably stand to be a little bigger than normal, but this size just doesn't work.
For that particular NPC I'd tend to agree, but I still maintain that I'd love some GMs from PI that size and PLEASE give us GIANT ROBOTS NAO!!! -
I understand the OPs concern and I suspect it's due in large part to the proliferation of the Poison set.
There's a lot more toxicity around now that more people are able to play poison toons, not simply MMs where were never the most popular AT anyhow. But now corruptors & trollers have them, the poison in the air is truly mind blowing and this is having an inherent effect on player behaviour. -
Pretty sure it's a bug but I hopehopehopehope we can get some robots and rock monsters this size rampaging through the city zones!
-
I've been playing solidly for over five years with maybe 3 or 4 months max out of the game since I first started.
Sometimes it's frustrating, sometimes it's tricky fitting in with what else is going on in the game - but I've learned two big things generally:
When I'm not able to find a team or a group, it's not that there aren't people out there, it's that I'm either being too impatient, too grumpy or both.
When things begin to pall or feel a bit stale, I generally go for something I've not played before - or do something oddball. Oddball in the sense of it being quite crazy; trying to run from 1-50 without being defeated, not taking any vet powers, or taking two powers that don't naturally seem to have much synergy (and often you get surprising results.)
Also widening your social group can help - joining various channels, SGs etc all is good.
And if none of that works, take a short break. Go play a competitor and realise rapidly why this is the best superhero MMO on the planet. Grab a couple of less well-known comicbooks, and find a couple of interesting characters and blend them together. (I tend to choose the less powerful characters because I find them more interesting.)
Hope that helps -
-
you could always just have a female body, empty jar and call her "gave head"
-
Quote:Here's mine. Simple name "The Fish Monster" with the concept of trying to make not a headless costume, but a different type of head, with the mouth and eyes placed in a unique way.
That's very good and inspired this concept:
A mutant fish that was initially trapped for study but escaped its captors and now on the loose, carrying its artificial environment environment with it. You could make it a tank and call it "Aquarium" -
Quote:Sadly, I'm restricted (read: have restricted myself for reasons of taste) to just Brutes, Scrappers, Stalkers and Masterminds.
I like this. I like it a lot. I'll have to think about it some more to come up with something solid, but it's an interesting idea.
---
Seriously, I wish we could put more stuff in the jar than just brains.
I intiially thought of this as a melee only but it works for others but if you've got a "non-corporeal" body (hence the jar and exoskeleton) you could also have a costume variant of "ghost form" with spooky aura and no suit? That might be extra good for Stalker... almsot invisible out of the suit hence good at assassination -
-
Here's a couple of ideas that possibly need some refinement but I present the bones here:
The classic "Headless Horseman" legend. Give it a superhero twist with a couple fo six guns and a thirst for revenge/justice
Sentient ectoplasm... perhaps the spirit of a scientist with an intellect greater than Reed Richards, but incorporeal and needs an encounter suit to function in a physical world
A supercomputer interfaced with a human brain. The computer is a high level AI unit, but cannot make emotional decisions. The brain is from its creator who, on discovering he was suffering from a terminal illness networked his brain to the computer and created a robotic suit for it.
A teleportation experiment gone wrong: The experiment transported the body leaving the intellect and "soul" behind. Maybe make that a Crey vengeance thing.
Slightly off the wall but for a magic origin character: There's a magical portrait of your character (a la Dorian Gray) but the protagonist's arch enemy threw paint stripper over it, thus dissolving the face leaving the brain of the real person exposed.
I guess with many of those kind of stories you first need to have somebody who doesn't have a head as we know it... but how do you get to that stage is the puzzle. Hope those help -
