I see no reason to disagree here.

My eventual solution was to give the game time to add something else new for a level 50 to do, and when that happens, to mix whatever gets added with Ouro replays of 45-50 content and maybe some Architect, plus at least one round of Villain tips. But all of that will have to wait.

This is a good idea to have explained. Here's what I plan to do: I'll put an explanation of how I foresee things going for my hero in a similar hypothetical environment, and then I'll go ahead and copy that to my submission post so it's all in the same place. And, yes, I'm aware that your example does not mean Brutticus has been elected

Brutticus is a character with a strong but one-sided sense of morality and prone to snap judgements and uncompromising decisions, so she could be used as both an ally or an enemy to the character in question. Having grown up in a world where survival at any cost is the norm, she is used to applying extreme violence and rugged determination in practically every situation, so she will not back down from any fight, no matter how difficult, or indeed how stupid.

Brutticus' morality revolves around protecting the weak from the horrors of nature and from the malice of the strong, so she will naturally regard strong people with suspicion and mistrust unless given reason to feel otherwise. If she is given reason to believe a strong person is somehow at fault, she's very likely to choke-slam said person into a wall before getting his end of the story.

Despite growing up in a world without spoken language, Brutticus has learned to speak fluent English, though she speaks plainly and directly without much unnecessary eloquence. I don't want to supply specific suggested lines she could say, but any curt, to-the-point, firm and possibly aggressive dialogue should fit her.

    *edit*
You should also look into fixing the typo in the line:

Characters will be used in the most respectful manner and attempt to stay true to their "doncept" or "background".

I generally try to not nit-pick on people's typos, but this one is highlighted in quotes and part of what amounts to an announcement I apologise if this comes off as pretentious.
  4. Personally, I've never felt the need to see thousands of heroes flying about. It makes everyone all the more insignificant the more I'm reminded that I'm just a face in the crowd out of zillions of other heroes out there.

Good way to get a Combat Specialist AT (*continues to dream of a Dual Pistol/Blade/Martial Arts and Defense character*)
That's not a freeform powerset, though. It's just a branching powerset. Things like these have been suggested for a long time - since before Soldiers of Arachnos, actually - and they've always been good ideas. However, retrofitting existing sets to behave like this seems like an impossible undertaking, just for the sheer workload it would involve.

    I'd like it, though.

Your entire premise is wrong, I'm afraid. Bodyguard does give the Mastermind a distinct advantage in terms of personal survivability, but it comes with distinct disadvantage. For one, you lose any and all control over your henchmen, such as where they are positioned, what they chase and what they attack, losing the ability to focus fire on priority targets. For another, your henchmen are taking considerably more damage than they would be otherwise, since the damage they share with you is not resistible.

Aggressive henchmen are best used for "attack-move" clearing of enemies were risk is not significant. They will also chase for long distances. Defensive henchmen are useful for travelling and for controlling overaggro, though they will still chase. Passive henchmen are useful for setting ambushes so that the henchmen don't break cover prematurely. They're also useful in combat dangerously close to unaggroed spawns. Passive is also very good for withdrawing your henchmen, as they're far less likely to disregard your Move and Follow commands.

I don't feel this is necessary, simply because I don't feel there is a discrepancy to be balanced. If you feel that playing with uncontrollable henchmen on constant Bodyguard, then by all means - do so. But this is by no means the strategy to end all strategies.

This surprises me, as well. I spend most of my time in-game over global chat with someone two servers away, yet because I'm not actually on the same team with them, I get called anti-social. But that's neither here nor there.

So... When's that Vanguard pack coming out?

It's sometimes easier to see a costume if you load it on your machine and look at it from all sides, as opposed to the sometimes cheating pics we provide.

No, it did not. Kheldian and Soldier of Arachnos powersets are still unavailable to Praetorian characters. You may call this trivial, but it's pretty solid precedent that they were never aiming for a game which allowed you to take EVERYTHING at create, but more one that allowed for a different subset.

Right now, heroes have 7 ATs to their name: Blaster, Scrapper, Tanker, Defender, Controller, Peacebringer, Warshade

Villains have another 7: Brute, Stalker, Mastermind, Corruptor, Dominator, Arachnos Soldier, Arachnos Widow

Praetorians have 10: Blaster, Scrapper, Tanker, Defender, Controller, Brute, Stalker, Mastermind, Corruptor, Dominator

It's not exactly even, but it's far from one-sided.
  11. As long as they're not actually using any of our characters in them, I see no reason why the cutscenes can't be pre-rendered. Sure, use the existing game engine, but let an animator go nuts on the thing an actually introduce some action. We've seen what even just basic demo editing can do for an action scene (someone made a video of his own character fighting the Statesman which ran like an action movie), so I'm sure between that an some custom one-off animations, we could turn those into decent cinematics.

That, and please put an actual writer in charge of the dialogue. Please! Some of those cutscenes are completely pointless and add nothing to the experience.

Come to think of it, that's part of my problem. I DON'T have a lot of spare time. It may seem like I do because I post from work a lot, but I usually have things to do even on weekends. I usually "steal" my playtime from more important things by, uh... Being irresponsible and not doing my job But that means I need good motivation to do so and I'm a bit struggling for that at the moment.

I should probably start writing again. That always seems to help. Sadly, not with Ezikiel. He's... Difficult to write for since everything I try to write for him ends up huge and elaborate. I think the Vanguard pack will actually help me a great deal in this regard. I have at least one character with basically no story (She's cool, but we don't know who she is or why she's here, but she's cool) who can use an identity, but will also need Vanguard Claws from level one to do so.

Probably have to leave this one alone for a bit, though. The last announcement I heard said the pack would be out "by" the 28th of this month, so there are a few days left still. Just enough to watch the Abyss, Deep Star Six, Leviathan and any other "underwater" movies I can think of. Um... Sphere? I guess?

That actually sounds like a plan - moves and a bit of a break, then come back for the Vanguard pack with a concept character. Should be interesting. Probably not gonna' bother with my older 50s for a while. That's, what? Three of 'em? I may end up playing one of my newer 50s, though. Those ended up getting to 50 with about three or four 45-50 arcs open, so they can do that.

OK, I know what to do now. That makes me feel better. Should start planning that revamped character bio. Best to get past the chaotic brainstorming stages BEFORE I start writing. That always makes things easier.

I'm disappointed that you'd see adding a fifth power to all power pools as a "waste." People have been suggesting that for years. OK, so maybe THIS one isn't the power to put in there, but adding A new power to Flight and all the others should not be regarded with disdain.

I already addressed this point earlier in the thread (about four posts above yours). The problem isn't that one second, it's when you get stuck in a loop of knockback for two, three, four or even more cycles, as can happen when facing knockback-wielding minions, such as Rikti Drones. Siege's old minions were a lot of fun, too, back when every minion had Power Burst. There are also powers like Hurricane and Earthquake.

MMO revenue is not affected by sales to a very important degree. What one must judge Going Rogue based on is the number of active subscribers and the concurrent live users at whatever times or peaks are deemed important. We have access to neither of those statistics, so we're guessing blind, as we have been every time someone has cited sales numbers and posted subscriber numbers from 2004-2009 with the next two years "estimated."

However, when we do get another paid expansion eventually, I would very much like to see the content it's advertised on to be part of the actual expansion, not a content patch a year down the line.

That's just it, though - unless a narrative is attributed to a particular character established in the story, or at the very least it is established that this narrative is coming from within the story itself, then one has to assume it is the author speaking, and the author is never wrong. That's the sad part of writing - being the the writer gives you a responsibility, both towards your own characters and story, and towards the people who may peruse it.

Now, granted, I haven't run, err... "Old" RPGs, so I may be missing an unwritten rule about what one is right and what one is wrong to ignore, but as far as I'm concerned, anything "the author" tells me has to be considered and respected and I need fairly good reason to simply disregard it. Usually, that reason comes down to "Who could have possibly thought this was a good idea?" but I try not to re-write the entirety of the in-game fiction to my ends.

There's a "why" in there somewhere.

Why would I initially say that I dislike the game's representation of my character's internal monologue, yet keep insisting said representation has to be respected anyway? Well, put it like this - I like the story in City of Heroes. Well, some of it, mostly the older stuff. But I like "the story." In order for me to like the story, I need to be able to respect it and take it seriously, and that includes trying to make sense of the narrative "as is" without swapping in my own. And, yes, that includes the little tid-bits that Tip missions feed us.

After all, is the point of Tip missions not to chart the path of our morality? That's what they're for to begin with. So if I were to up and say "The morality of these missions does not apply to me!" then I may as well be given a free morality point for every paper mission I do for all it matters.

    ---

Let me try and sum this all up in one sentence: The solution to bad writing should not be to ignore writing altogether, but to request and see the introduction of better writing, especially when there's room for improvement.

Hmm... I have a few villains who could go for that, malicious jerks that they are. I wonder if... Any of them are 50, though. I'll have to check my roster, but that's not out of the question.

Not for this one, though. See, I built Ezikiel as sort of a compilation of all the "cool villains" I'd seen in my childhood, and one key aspect that got rolled into his personality because of it was that he's the sort of villain who's above lying to people. You know, the kind who says things like:

"Oh, go ahead and follow me. Come see all of my secrets. I'll even send you a copy. Because no amount of knowledge will help you stop me. So go ahead and waste your time."

I do have a 50 villain who's sort of an even more overzealous "crusader" in the most negative sense of the word, and would indeed feel right at home being a hero of the people, only... His actions really aren't heroic. Ever. I mean, he'd fit right in being the de-facto hero doing horrible things, but getting him there would require showing either the kind of conscience he doesn't have or otherwise the kind of pretension he feels isn't required. Sort of like the Paladin from Serenity.

Truth be told, I'm not much of a fan of the side-swapping morality. It seems a bit too specific in how it moves. Villains start out insane, then go greedy, then go altruistic. It makes sense, really, if you're looking to turn over a new leaf, but it's kind of... Heavy if you're just looking to fool around.

I should point out that "don't play that character" is also an acceptable option. Not a preferred option, granted, but I'm not dead-set on playing that one particular character at this one particular moment or I'm taking my ball and going home. My objective was to find out if there was something to look forward to after giving him a respec, getting him new enhancements, redoing his costumes and re-writing his bio. Right now, I'm a bit on the fence about it, since Ouro 45-50 content IS a good idea, and that should be able to last me for quite some time. There are a few good arcs in there, granted.

To be honest, I miss arcs like World Wide Red which could keep me occupied for several days. Granted, they do tend to grate if not told very well (see: To Save a Thousand Worlds), but at least it's a body of content.

More or less, my question wasn't whether I should keep playing or quit, but more if I could play THIS character or if I should work on one of my lower-level ones. As it stands right now I'll probably work on a lower-level character and sit on my 50s in wait for more arcs in their level range. I have other characters to play.

    QoL Issues

    1. Fix the power customization screen so it shows what our toggles and pets look like. For toggles, just leave activate the power ONCE and let it run until reset by changing its colour or selecting a different power. For pets, show the pet summoning animation, then have the pet cycle through all the animations it has at the time of summoning it. If you're customizing Trip Mine, show it being set down, then show it exploding. If you're customizing Jack Frost, show him being summoned then show him activating his ice powers in order. We need to see what we're actually changing.

    2. Eliminate weapon redraw. BABs was already working on this before he left, so presumably it's something that's desirable. Go ahead and just do it. But eliminate it only in the functional sense. When attempting to use a power which can activate immediately, allow it to activate immediately with the weapon just appearing in the character's hands en route. When attempting to use a power which cannot fire at the moment because it's out of range, out of line of sight, you're out of endurance or attempting to use the power on an inapplicable target or if you have nothing selected, play the draw anmation.

And please fix the bug where if you activate Build Up while in a non-combat stance, it locks you outside of entering combat stance until you draw a weapon or hit Esc about five times.

    3. Allow click status protection powers to be activated while held, slept, stunned or terrorised. In essence, allow these powers to work like a Break Free inspiration. There's nothing dumber than getting held just as your Practiced Brawler is going down because you neglected to "press X to not die," but allowing players to activate the power when held, waking them up from the hold would fix that problem and give click status protection powers a distinct advantage to offset the easy convenience of toggle status protection powers.

    4. Never put contact introductions in the lists of contacts more than 4 levels lower than I am. It's hideously annoying to level up in a mission in Brickstown, only for Dr. Whatshisname in Atlas Park to show up in my active contacts offering to give me more contacts. If new contacts need to be introduced to me, use the contacts I had in the previous level range. If I have no new contacts in the previous level range, I can always run newspaper missions and get new contacts that way. And while we're at it, please mark contacts who won't offer me missions and will only offer contact introductions in my Contacts window. Highlight them in green, for instance, so I know they'll only give me a referral and not missions. Let me know why I'm making the trip.

    5. Remove missions that waste my time from the game. This includes contact introduction missions, Security Chief missions, PvP Liaison missions, difficulty contact missions and so forth. Remove Security Chief and PvP Liaison missions from the regular contacts and instead place them in the roster of the City Representative and Kalinda/Burke. Remove contact introduction missions entirely and make Wincott, Temblor, Peebles and Bower into regular contact introductions via the "Be introduced to a new contact" option or otherwise have them "call" the player via the Montague/Mercedes pop-up window. These aren't needed, as none of these zones are new, nor have they been new for the past six years.

The only reason I haven't done the Ramiel arc on this guys is because I haven't played him since I10, but I'm sure that won't present a problem, not after a respec and reassessment.

Exemplaring, further, is probably what I'll have to resort to, though I'd still restrict myself to 45-50 content. Not sure what I want to redo, really. Maybe Time After Time? Is that in the Ouro crystal?
