Quote:The reason is actually much simpler - so that some people can take pleasure in other people not having what they have. And THIS particular sense of "accomplishment" I have no problem with "annoying," as others have put it already. That it's incarnate!
>.>
It's the self-declared holy document argument. "This book is true, it's the word of <deity/s/prophet/s> and infallible!" "Where's the proof?" "In the book. It says so."
---
You know what's funny for me, though? I ask for less forced teaming and I'm told that this is a business and the developers need to make money. I offer to pay for it, but then the argument changes and it's no longer about money all of a sudden.
All of the arguments, all of the bickering and all of the put-down in the world will not change one basic fact: I am willing to pay for my cosmetics, and would in fact prefer to do so rather than unlock them in-game. And I intend to make this crystal clear to anyone on the development team, so that next time they think about adding more costumes, they'll keep this in mind.
I do not care in the slightest that this may well mean I'll have to pay for ALL future costume additions. I simply will, safe in the knowledge that if I hadn't, they'd have stuck them behind some asinine unlock prerequisite. I will pay for them, and I will do so with a big, fat smile on my face knowing that I can actually use what I'm getting when I want to use it, how I want to use it and as soon as it becomes available.
Game balance is one thing. Costume pieces are not part of game balance. And I am willing to pay money to ensure that this remains true in practice. -
-
The logical leap happens here: Yes, there are people who want costumes and an end game. How many of these people want costumes ONLY FRONT an end game, and how many of them would accept new costumes and new end game coming separately?
-
Quote:Then you see what you want to see, because that's nothing at all like what's actually being said. That's the sentiment I'm getting out of a lot of people on the forums these days. The sense of: "How DARE they pay attention to someone that isn't me!"
You're either trying to construct a very obvious straw man... Again, or you're putting your posts in the wrong thread. No-one's talking about having to do anything. We are, as a point of fact, talking about a Booster Pack that will allow us to not do anything. That's kind of the point.Quote:It is just as optional as anything else in the game. You don't HAVE to take part in it if you don't want to. Just as you don't HAVE to buy the booster packs, you don't HAVE to PvP. Hell, for that matter you don't HAVE to level your character, there is absolutely nothing preventing you from stanidng around in Atlas Park at level 1 forever if you decide that's what you want to do. -

Quote:The whole game is gated behind real money. At least then I don't have to ruin my gaming experience working to unlock cosmetic items. People always tell me that the only way to make my opinion heard is to vote with my wallet. Well, I'm willing to vote with my wallet. If you have to buy them from a "costume pack" then they are gated via real money.
Sell me a pack that contains Incarnate costumes, Rularuu costumes or Roman costumes (including Romulus ones) and I will buy it. -
Tank you, Johnstone. I already went back through my written background for William and search-replaced the name of his wife wherever it appeared. I'll be using her final name when I get to write her own story.
Thank you, everybody
-
And now you know why I insist on paying for all my costume pieces. Because if I don't, they'll stick them behind some asinine unlock. I would sooner pay for my cosmetic additions than have to unlock them in-game. I do not consider cosmetic items as something that should be gated, and I never will. I will always prefer to pay money for them than to grind to unlock them.
So when's that Rularuu Pack coming out? -

Quote:I personally use FRAPS. It's a bit of amazing software that will give you a direct FPS readout on anything you're running and it's perfect for capturing video and screenshots from practically anything. You can run it in the background of the game and I don't think it affects performance, or you can turn it on only when you need editor screenshots like I tend to do.How do you get the shots from the Costume creator? Everytime I hit prnt Scrn when at the Tailor nothing happens.
The free version of FRAPS can only capture 60 seconds of video at a time and always puts on the FRAPS logo on it, but it has no limitations on taking screenshots that I've been able to determine. It saves its screenshots to its FRAPS\Screenshots folder as raw bitmaps, so you still need to crop them and/or save them as jpeg files, but I find it incredibly convenient. It actually takes better screenshots than City of Heroes does, or so it looks to my eye. -
That's not a bad idea. I think Mercy has a few good places, actually, or possibly St. Martal. I could actually use one of the rooftop gardens in that zone. I'm thinking I may need to modify my objectives.

Quote:Ooh! Scooped! And I think you just served me the perfect name on a silver platter. Isabella Worthington is perfect. I love the name, I love the flow AND IT FITS!Poking around Wikipedia turned up various queens and princesses:
Victoria
Beatrice or Beatrix
Maria
Isabella
Anna or Anne
Eleanor
Margaret
Sophia
Amelia
Helene or Helena
Thank you kindly. Now I just have to figure out what nationality the name is.
Thank you so much!
P.S. I had no idea "Eleanor" was an actual, real name. I'll definitely keep this in mind for future characters. Double thanks
-
Ophelia Worthington... It's one symbol short, which means it fits, and it's not a bad name. OK, we have a contender! Thank you, this gives me something to think about
I'm not sure how British it is, but I'm not sure how important I want to make that angle.
Beatrice Worthington is an exact match for the name field, but I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. It gives me something else to think about, though. We have a second contender.
---
I also wasn't sitting on my hands looking for handouts
I thought about stealing Countess Clarissa Von Dorn's maiden name, as it's the right length, but I'm not sure how proper of a name that is. More than anything, though, Countess Crey is already using it and I'm not sure if people won't be too put off by me reusing it.
Also, for some reason my mind went back to Gone With the Wind and to the name of Scarlett O'Hara. That name is also the right length, and though it's probably not very British, it might serve as a good fit.
Also, considering I wanted to pilfer Queen Elizabeth's name initially, I thought I might as well attempt to pilfer Queen Victoria's name, as well
---
So far, we have:
Ophelia
Beatrice
Clasrissa
Scarlet
Victoria
Not a bad selection. Does anyone have any preferences between these or further suggestions? -
I spoke with a friend of mine and he suggested the name, as well. I can't use it, however, as a nickname simply doesn't befit her status. Remember, we're talking about an aristocrat here - this is her public face. That's especially true since it's a stolen name specifically to fool and affect other people. I need something which sounds much more formal.
-
Indeed. I can tell you right now that if it weren't for the stories that this game has inspired me to write, I wouldn't have made it past the first six months. I like my characters' stories a LOT more than I like the actual game.
-
OK, I feel like such an idiot for being stuck on this, but so help me I am! I need a name for a new character I'm working on, and I've painted myself into a corner. The name I wanted to use physically doesn't work and I'm at a loss as to what name to replace it with. The character in question is one I've banded about many times already:

Her story is complex (and not entirely final), but the gist of it is that she's an immortal shapeshifter who seduces people, feeds on their emotions and eventually on their life essence. In her human form, she's "married" to her ancient co-conspirator and plays the role of mistress of the estate and matriarch. In her monster form, she eats people. Sometimes literally.
Originally, I had planned to use the name of Carmilla. However, this being a fairly famous book and character, AND one very heavily related to vampires, I thought this was not a good idea. The name I wanted to use was:
Elizabeth Worthington
The problem with this name is that it's 1 symbol too long, and I can shorten neither of the two names without bastardising them. I cannot avoid using the last name of Worthington, as her "husband" - Sir William Worthington - is an established character whose name is not subject to change. [white space]Worthington is 12 symbols long, which limits me to a first name no longer than 8 symbols, and Elizabeth, unfortunately, is 9 symbols long - one too many.
And with those two out of the way, I am completely out of ideas. I need to give this woman an assumed, fake identity with a name that sounds distinctly British and fairly aristocratic, but my vocabulary of such names is sadly lacking. I need a name which sounds Dignified when used with the title "Lady" ahead of it, as well as one which isn't weird, shortened or made-up (an easy test for this is if your spell check recognises it). And, of course, it needs to sound good with the family name of Worthington at the tail end of it.
Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated. -
Quote:There IS middle ground here - gameplay and story segregation. I personally don't roleplay. Ever. However, I take great care to construct INTERESTING characters, give them exciting backstories and design them such that I'd want to see a movie about that character. Once that's done, I play and build the character in accordance with that story, "gaming" only instances which are irrelevant to the concept. For instance, if I designed a winged, flying character, that character gets flight. I don't care about Acrobatics, I don't care that Stone Armour will spend most of its time on the ground anyway. The character flies, and that's final.I can understand that other people approach things differently and it can cause a problem. However I have to wonder if there are more gamists (like me) or roleplayers out there.
However, my concept doesn't dictate whether Seismic Smash is slotted for recharge or not, how long Fault stuns for and whether Stone Fists is accurate. These get chosen and optimised for performance. -
Yes, it's very possible that I'm paying for the development of another game. I prefer not to think about that possibility too much, because the last time that happened... Well...

Quote:Speaking of Vampires, I do have a grand total of one vampire guy: Artegor.Wow, going with Liz on this that does give me a good idea for a Vampire, but I would go more for a Male Vamp instead of a Female. But still AWESOME idea Samuel.

There really isn't all that much creative about his costume - he's essentially full-suit Baron with a Plain cape, black on the outside, red on the inside, Monstrous hands and a human-toned skin face with white hair. And, of course, almost all black, but I like black
I like your design for a vampire, but you could stand to make him a little more creepy, though I couldn't tell you how you might achieve that. I barely had enough in me for one of these
I'd go with two. One looks like a librarian, whereas two looks more like a temptress. Definitely go with a cape, too. Your call on the shoulder fur.Quote:I am still a bit unsure which one to go and use (1 or 2). What do you think?
I'd also suggest looking for ways to add a tad more contrast to the costume, even if it's just a single element somewhere. It's generally dark and earth-toned, so a bright colour of any hue will suffice. -
Quote:I'm looking for something I can do on the cheap, which generally means without involving other people. The character in question is on Test and hasn't the resources to make a base, plus I'm not really sure what to do with it to make it look less like... Well, a square cave. The base editor is just needlessly cumbersome to use, too.I don't know how helpful it would be to you but I'd think the easiest option would be to plop one down in a SG base. Decorate around it with tapestries, ferns and other accoutrements to taste.
I'm mostly looking for something in the overworld that I can run to and take a picture, preferably villain-side (though hero-side is not out of the question) and let that be it. All things considered, I could pick something simple, like Villa Montose or hightown Mercy, but I was just wondering if there were a better spot. -
This might sound like an odd question, but I'm looking for a fairly specific background for a screenshot and I just can't think of where to find it. Here's what I need:
A "throne" or throne-like chair, something appropriate for a female character to do the /em sitexecutive chair in. It has to be some kind of chair with clear view from the front, which is to say no desk to obscure the character. It also needs to look dignified and have a high-class background, so Atta's "throne" of garbage doesn't count, and I don't really want something in a cave.
Finally, the character I want to take a screenshot of is level 1 and experimental at this point, so ideally I want a location somewhere in the overworld, not at the end of a difficult, high-level mission as is the case with Tyrant's old throne that the Olympian has taken over.
Failing that, can you give me an idea for what background I can use to enhance the splendour and pride of a well-dressed aristocratic woman that I can use in a wide-angle screenshot? It doesn't have to be a throne or a mansion, but just anything in that theme may do just as well. -
William, can you post a larger screenshot of the face? The helmet looks pretty nice and stylised, but I can't quite tell what it's made up of.
Also, I apologise for not posting more helmets. I kind of blew all my savings on that one original post

Personally, I'd be interested to see ANYTHING ELSE OTHER THAN INCARNATE, and sooner, rather than later. If Matt Miller and his separate development team focusing entirely on end game content intend to keep working in this stuff the entire time, they're going to have to do this without reducing content in all other directions to a crawl.
Powersets being as work- and cost-intensive as they are, they seem like the first thing to get cut. It's somewhat ironic that even now with the supposedly much larger development team and budget, we're back to looking for least-cost suggestions like we were back when there were only 15 people on the team working on a shoestring budget.
