This isn't the updating process I'm talking about - it's not patching or anything; it's, according to the updater, "fixing files" which is not something it ever, and the timer on it is something like 80 hours.

Is it supposed to go through a massive "fixing files" on the updater when you first start it? That's what mine did and the estimated time was absurd.
