Are there no kinetic melee guides for brutes? I'll go ahead and post my questions in the brutes section but I thought one would have been out by now.

So after a small break I'm back to help out again. A friend of mine was having some serious issues with his comp. A little about it:
CPU: AMD Phenom X2 Quad Core 3.2ghz
Memory: 4gb DDR2
Video: ATI Radeon HD 5770
I think that's all I need to tell you about his comp. His problem was constant BSD's. One day he got 7 in a row so we started doing some research into the problem thinking it might help out here as well. First time we encountered the error someone had it traced back to the Video card cause the error was translated to "Faulty CPU 2." I didn't think that sounded right but we tried a driver wipe and reinstall. Three more BSD's later we encountered a different MESSAGE but the same code. We traced this back to memory, so we switched each stick of RAM out one at a time with not a single one failing, then two at a time until we had all 4 back in place.
To make a longer story short, we traced every single error we got to a different solution but none of them worked. Now, what we failed to realized is that most of the error codes we were getting were all traceable back to the CPU, hint hint. He hadn't updated the drivers for his CPU. This is especially true of AMD CPU's aparently, and something I didn't know before now. I'm not sure if it's the same for Intel (I honestly refuse to use Intel for personal reasons) but goto their websites and check out to see if there are any updated drivers. Also if you happen to know your motherboards make and model check for updated chipset drivers or if you have a prebuilt system (HP, Dell, etc.) check their website for any updates for your system. -
So you said you were going to update for I15, but what about I19?

Quote:And maybe a steak dinner and a movie as well? I don't usually got for beer on the first date but yes. The best way to future proof your pc for at least three months (maybe six depending on parts) is to have a friend help you put one together.Don't buy an Alienware PC. Contrary to the [H]ardOCP crowd's most fervent beliefs, red lights and black plastic do not in fact make your games run faster, and futureproofing is a fool's endeavour when purchasing a PC. Spend a thousand bucks or so tops on parts from a reputable online shop, buy your most computer savvy friend a case of beer, and have her assemble your new box o' stuff into a great rig. Then use the other thousand bucks for upgrades later on.

Ok, here's a quote from the AMD Game forums from a post about WoW shuttering and extremely low framerates.
Quote:Not sure if you want to go through a complete reinstall of your OS but it may be worth a shot.OK I had the same issue and im afraid I tried everything the only thing that fixed it was an OS reinstall, now I can run everything on Ultra getting 70+ fps and drops to 38fps turning but zero lag. Running on 1 monitor fullscreen @ 2560x1600
I installed a clean OS to a new drive, put the old drive in and copied 25GB of WoW off of it. Ran a repair on the new version and was working instantly.
I'm using 10.12 Catalyst install with the parallel processing Stream SDK.
Hope this helps! -
I see, guess I should've asked which card you were using instead of drivers. Didn't even know they stopped using a disable option. The whole reason ATI put in the ability to disable the AI was because users wanted it in the first place. Guess I won't be going above the 5xxx series of cards until they put it back in, or I'll just have to go to nVidia when I'm ready to upgrade. Well now that that's squared away that's the most I can help with, hopefully someone else using the 6xxx series of cards knows how to fix the lag issue. Good luck getting your issue fixed.

Check the screen shot.
I looked on the ATI forums and googled several search terms and couldn't find anything suggesting that disabling Catalyst AI was removed.
Now the above link is a screen shot taken just after a fresh install of both Windows 7 and ATI Catalyst 10.12. As you can see there is a checkbox that allows you to disable Catalyst A.I.
Also, it dawned on me that you gave three options for A.I. when in fact there are only two. Standard and Advanced. Can't say what you're looking at off hand but it doesn't seem like Catalyst A.I. to me.
Now as to why I'm so adament about Cat A.I.? Well it has to do with the fact that up until recently I've been using budget build hand-me-down systems that were, in my view, sub par to anything I had hoped I would be getting. Cat A.I. uses the cpu to analyze textures and return a function that best describes the way the texture should be processed then queries the cpu again for the mathematical equations as to how to process and show the final textures. In other words, it takes away from cpu overhead which could be better used for something else.
So are you a moron Mephisto? Never said it and don't think so. But you seem a little stuborn and set in the fact that you know what you're talking about. Something i've learned from 3d Modeling and texturing: No matter how good you think you might be, there's always something else to learn. So why not go back and take that screen shot and let's see if we can get this figured out. -
DuckDodgers, you're one of the lucky ones. Most of us never even got to send a crash report.
Mephisto, can you take a screenie and either send me a link or post it in a reply? I'm not saying I don't trust you but ever since I started building computers for myself I've been using ATI and have always had the option to disable Catalyst AI. -

I'll give this thread a bump to see if you can get a little bit more help and also suggest upgrading your OS to at least Vista. I know a lot of people say that Vista sucks but I've had nothing but good luck with it even during beta. So it's a thought but if you're skeptical about going to Vista then give Win 7 a try, looks similar, better features and more user friendly.

Quote:What version of CCC are you using? I just installed 10.12 and it can still be disabled. Or are you using basic mode. You must be in advanced mode in order to disable Catalyst A.I.
Can't seem to disable it in the new CCC... Can only set it to performance, quality, high quality... -
That's right I'm sorry. Where I heard that was a post on techspot about an installer that makes dx10 possible on XP. However, after further reading I wouldn't suggest using it because many users report many applications crashing and the like. So I'm not entirely sure what benefit you get from using UM on an XP machine. If someone else has experience with this I'd like to know myself.
-
Meph, just out of curiosity did you disable Catalyst A.I.? From what I've read it auto adjusts your settings as needed. Ever since I disabled it my graphics performances rarely drops except on lag hill in the ITF.
River, I'm glad it's sort of working for you. Seems kinda odd to have to do this every single time you want to play. But I really do hope that the dev's are reading up on our problems and are hopefully trying to find a solution. -
Quote:I dub this thread "The Crasha-palooza end of 2010 Festival!"
I've been working on this (off and on) for quite awhile now SInce I19 came out and it's been a virtual Crasha-palooza!
Quote:And it's 'hard lockups' too = I can't even get to taskbar or the task manager and restart or shutdown from there - so I'm having to reboot via the reset button - and it's been accompanied by a sound loop almost every time so far.
Quote:And -adding insult to injury - I never even get a chance to submit a freaking Crash Report either!
1) Uninstall the entire game and make sure no traces are left behind of it.
2) Reinstall but don't log in. After the updater finishes installing and patching exit out.
3) In your CoH folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\) or depending on windows version: right click shortcut on desktop -> Open File Location. Find two files, .checksum and .prv and delete them.
4) Go to start menu and "Run" cmd. In the prompt that appears type: ipconfig /flushdns (e.g. <C:\WINDOWS> ipconfig /flushdns)
5) Restart your computer and reopen the updater, it should go through a checksum phase and repair a few files including cityofheroes.exe. If it doesn't start over from step 3 though it should be noted that when I had to go back and delete the files I didn't see the .prv the second time.
After the final repairing of files you SHOULD be good to go. I haven't had a problem since. And the only lag I get is on the ITF hill. I hope this helps out and please report back if it does. -
Interesting, just out of curiosity was this a custom build cause there's no manufacturer or model. Also, are you using onboard graphics? A few more questions to ask are: Latest drivers? Latest DirectX? Latest update for Win XP?
It seems odd to me that DxDiag is reporting DirectX 9 instead of 10, I maybe wrong but I thought 10 and 11 could both be used in XP. Again I could be wrong about that but DirectX 10 came out while XP was still preferred over Vista for compatibility reasons IIRC.
One last thought too, if you're using UltraMode why do your settings seem so low? Sorry for so many questions but trying to get all the ones that I can think of out of the way that I can think of. -
I could run them say about 8 ish (kids bedtime) And I have an invuln tanker and a kin troller I can bring to the party just in case we get 4 tanks like I did with Apex last night lol.
-
Ok so here's how it went down. I went over to my friends house where I backed up all my data including the CoH directory. I then reformatted and reinstalled a regular copy of Win 7 Ult. Great thing is, no bsd's, bad new though the client still crashes. So my friend suggested uninstalling and removing any leftover traces of CoH and reinstalling that from scratch. Went through the entire install phase, logged on and got the "No response from server message." Deleted the .checksum and .prv files, flushed my dns, restarted comp, restarted updater, logged in and now I haven't crashed since. So my suggestion is if you're up to waiting for about an hour try reinstalling the client. My guess is something wasn't over written and some code got garbled during the last patch and if you start fresh everything should be fine.
-
Well I know one of my problems was a version of windows that came with my comp, something called xdark. I had been meaning to get rid of it and reinstall my copy of win 7 ultimate because of the constant bsd's I had been getting. So I did, letting CoH do it's thing and install from scratch all the way up to the latest patch. If I continue to have problems then the only thing I can think that's wrong is something got bugged in the client. We shall see

Ok, update:
I do my maintenance on Saturday nights around 10 to 11 ish which includes CCleaner, Defragler, virus/spyware, and rootkits. Last night after Defragler was done it said that my drive was at 10% fragmentation. I started playing at around 5 this morning and at 6:30 my client completely crashed my comp forcing me to cut the power. Just out of curiosity I opened up Defragler and analyzed my drive and it was up to 41% fragmentation. I don't claim to be an expert but there's something seriously wrong with the client now that needs to be addressed. Running another 2 hour defrag and trying again. Will update with more info later. -
This is a tough one to crack, basically I'm having similar problems. Here's the deal: Before Thursdays patch I was playing CoH just fine; no lag, no stutter, no freezing, no problem. After Thursdays patch I noticed that sometimes when I click on UI items (such as menu bar, power tray, chat panel, etc.) the game flashes black, fps drops down tremendously as well as sound slows down to try and keep pace with the game, stays that way for a few seconds and then speeds back up to regular levels. I haven't run into the contact window or UI crashing, and actually I don't get a crash window at all. At intermittent times, the game will "freeze" up and a Microsoft Window will appear telling me that my "Program is using to much system memory and must be closed."
So before you ask, I live in an apartment so yes there's lots of dust. My case however comes with a filter that gets cleaned off the same day I do my weekly maintenance. What little dust there is inside the case for whatever reason it got there gets cleaned out the same day. Every fan is also unplugged so that no electrical feedback is introduced backwards. And the dusting of the inside of the case is only as needed.
My temps are perfect as well. CPU never comes close to critical, gpu also stays withing range. CCC is constantly pushing the GPU fan at 80%, overkill imo but the card stays around 60 degrees so I'm happy.
Also, I'm using the 10.12 drivers for my ATI card which ran stable before the patch on Thursday. My Northbridge and Southbridge drivers were updated prior to that and full driver sweep of the ATI drivers were done before installing the new Catalyst and system restart done post install.
I've run through everything with a tech friend of mine including a system rollback and uninstalling/reinstalling of CoH. Still have this problem. So even though Roughtrade didn't post his specs he may be on the right track to current issues and that it's not hardware related. My friend and myself believe that this is a problem on the dev side of CoH, not the user. However, we both could be wrong so I attached my dxdiag to see if maybe someone else catches something we didn't take into account.

Quote:I noticed my updater patching but I thought it was just because I added the -renderthread 1 to see if it would help with my other problem which I'll prolly have to make another thread for. Anway, I played through all of saturday no problem, but now at 4:30 in the morning I'm having to sit here and wait for this problem to get fixed. So something else happened and I'm guessing it's on the Dev's end being that people had to come up with a solution on their own for no apparent reason. When was the last time you played before this patch? Because there was a patch on Thursday(16th) and another on Saturday(18th).
Disclaimer: If this post came off as harsh, degrading, or in anyway unreadable please be aware that I was typing this at 4:30 in the morning after being woken up by roommates yelling at each other and unable to go back to sleep. -
Thanks everyone for the great advice. I definitely appreciate it, I forgot that I got a third build when I got my alpha slot so that helped out a lot but until I can get it slotted I'm still hard up for 1) soloing because I have to carry a full tray of blues and 2) I seem to get a lot of Rikti and carnie tips that I just get fed up with a dropping. But I'll keep chugging along on tf's and other's tip mish's.
-
Ok so I've bookmarked the defense softcap link, my next problem is that I only have about 80mil... maybe 100mil if I take the time to go through all my toons and send money my tanks way. I guess until then I can pick up RPD, RE, and TH instead of the TP pool, I'll fool around with it a bit and see what I can come up with.
-
Ok, so I've got a lvl 49 tank, invuln/em and I seem to be having a bit of trouble. Now it's been a couple of years since I've played and I'm not sure what's been changed as far as invuln goes but below you'll find my build.

I tried at lvl 49 to take on the STF and tank LR but he can two shot me if he so desires unless I have Unstop running, but then I have to be watching the icon and jump on top of a blue, DP then hope the healer can keep me alive long enough to activate my toggle and hope I don't loose agro and cause a team wipe. I got this build while talking to a friend of mine named @Baddie Beater and he said that tough and weave actually give me better numbers then the auto powers from invuln. So if I'm doing something wrong I would appreciate the constructive criticism and advice.
