Hooray!
I'm really surprised more people didn't make "worst" attempts. Maybe they had a look at mine and got blinded...
Grats to all of the winners, there's a lot of awesome work there and judging this contest is not a task that I would want to be given. -

Well here's a question for people: Does CoX load up the entire demo file at load time and read from an in-memory copy, or does CoX only read the current line + a small buffer ahead? If the latter, and Widow's explicit file-locking doesn't get in the way, it might be possible to sort of control CoX in real-time (well, with a large enough delay to always give CoX enough data so it never thinks it finished the file). This is kind of a far fetched idea that isn't likely to work, though.
[/ QUOTE ]
From my tests in the past, it loads the whole thing. I've tried editing demos while playing them and it hasn't worked for me. There could be a buffer, but I doubt there is one. -
Note that Torroes_Prime tried it with some pretty non-standard models. I suspect that it works with most "human" NPC's.
I wonder if "Invisibleactor" is a humanoid model... Anyway, if you want just the effect, you can probbaly use a blank slate character like Leandro did to make his rain of donuts. -
You can use demo edits to replace your character into pretty much any model you can imagine, even if you don't have access to the costume in the game.

I'm working on editing some demos to create some screenshots for a comic, and I've run into some problems.
I am using Zloth's demo launcher to view the demos and Balshorr's editor to edit them. I can launch a demo from the list in client_demos with no problem. I can also edit any of those demos in the demo editor. I can save those demos with new names, as well, which is what I've been doing, in case I want to go back and make a different set of changes to the original. When I do a "save as" in the demo editor, it appears to create a new demo file. However, I can't launch that file with the demo launcher; it doesn't even appear in the list from client_demos. What am I doing wrong here?
[/ QUOTE ]
Not sure about this one, I just saved a demo with Balshor's editor myself and it looks fine to me. Is it saving as a .cohdemo file, and did you check to see that it's actually been saved in the right folder?
[ QUOTE ]
Also, how and from where do I use the demodump feature to collect those screenshots?
[/ QUOTE ]
when you demo dump, it should save all of those screenshots in a directory named "screens", inside the client_demos folder. Keep in mind this also takes a good chunk of hard drive space. As for the rest, are you asking how to compile that into a video?

Finally, I apparently encountered a bug in demo capture. I recorded a demo on the Cimemora tileset map with the underwater area of a character sitting on a huge rock in one of the side rooms. When playing back the demo, though, that rock doesn't appear. I assumed it was part of the map itself, but I suppose it could be an entity of its own. However, there's no command to spawn such a rock in the demo file. All of this makes me wonder: what is this rock, and why didn't /demorecord capture it?
[/ QUOTE ]
That really could be anything. It might be a flaw in the map, the way it got recorded, or something that's just plain wonky. Or maybe it's the super secret entrance to a secret base filled with a lifetime supply of fresh grilled cheese sandwiches. But if you want to submit the location of said rock, along with the map, I suppose I could take a look at it. -
Congrats to 8baller, CollegeJem, and Leandro for their win, place, and show! You all did great jobs.
So when's the party? -
The announcement here says 1AM on the 13th, so that'd be tomorrow/tonight's show.
-
Wait, worst? I might just be able to do that... Go go gadget MS Paint!
-
Another great video, keep up the good work! This contest isn't really up my alley, but I look forward to seeing the entries
.
It may not be a bad idea to give the folks in the screenshots/fan art forum a heads-up about this contest either, if you haven't already. -
Last I checked a raw demo of a base will work with demos, but editing said demo made the base go *poof*. Or at least replacing one model with another did, I'm not sure about editing other aspects like movement.
-
Depends on what it looks like, really... maybe do a time-lapse thingymadoodle?
-
I'd think that it's more along the lines of moving from the existing position to the ragdoll position given in the current line. I guess that'd be pretty easy to test, just put a much larger number in the second entry and see if the transition gets any slower.
-
I personally recommend virtualdub for demo dumping. It's free and there's no need to convert those images to .BMP with it
.
-
It's not even a demo any more, just a bunch of gobbledygook. The original copies are probably ok, just that they're on my old PC.
-
After digging through my old files, it seems that a few of my old demos somehow got corrupted in the transfer over to my current computer. I did find one very short working demo of this mission though, which gives the positioning of three portals. There's also a quick custom demo I threw together at some point, probably something I was going to use for a demo at one point or another.
Anyway, the files are up here. (I was going to put it up on w00t but I get a page about permission denied when I try to go to the file depot).
A couple things to note- the trashed portal doesn't disappear over time, so there's no need to mess around to get that stuff to stay. Although if you keep it in its intended position, many of the pieces fall into the cubby hole beneath the walkway anyway.
Also, the "Player" must be within range of the portal if you want to see the big metal spinning bits while it's "alive" (though it might be of use to have a big blue glowing ball for something in a demo).
And one last sidenote, some of you may have noticed that all of those little extra fx from debris don't go away when you let the demo loop around. I got a phone call as I was starting one of the demos up, only to come back to my computer and find this mess. -
Only one way to find out
. Though I suspect it will still be a blue sky.
-
You can put in no map at all, but you'll end up in an empty blue sky (or black, depending on the in game time). Just make sure to leave in the first bit of the line so it looks like this:
0 0 Map
An all white background though? hm, can't help you there. Though if you drop the camera/characters about 1000 feet you can achieve a solid blue or black. From there, if you have the software/knowhow, you can likely use that background as a bluescreen and make it white.
Also, I haven't tried it, but you should even be able to get a solid green or red if you mess with the skyfile command. -
This is the map I used in my video:
MAPS/MISSIONS/OUTDOOR_MISSIONS/V_OUTDOOR_GRANDVILLE/PORTALCORP/PORTALCORP.TXT
The coordinates match that of regular old PI too, so you can simply swap maps if that's your fancy. I'll dig around and find my demos of the actual mission and post them up somewhere, and as I remember you can destroy multiple portals, not just one. -

No, no, no - I meant that when you (Crackmonkey) posted a comment on my video, while it was criticism, you didn't then come back and just ram it in my face. Yours was at least politely stated. Unlike those other mental midgets.
I wasn't implying you were in the same category as those retards. Ugh.

I wasn't implying you were implying. I'm pretty often misunderstood so I tend to explain myself even if I don't need to sometimes. And I rarely get enough sleep, which doesn't generally help.

*laughing* Would you believe I never even thought of that?
I think I should go for something like my "Value of PWNage" video starring this dweeb. I'll need a toon for TomStrong and a toon for Dwight-whateverhisnameis. (At least crackmonkey, while also less than complimentary on my video, had the guts to enter, and is also willing to share some demo secrets with me that I admired in his video.)
I think I finally found a target for my threat of "having someone get pwned by an army of Gears". Either that or I'll find a way to make Hamidon (or Bat'zul) eat them. Or have someone shove them off the top of the globe in Atlas.
Thanks, Obsidius, I knew I could count on you to help me keep things in perspective!
Oh, one thing I am curious about in this contest - there's no way to see how many votes a given entry has gotten, right? (So you can't tell who's winning along the way?) I actually hope not - it should keep the five finalists from getting deep-sixed by the Army of Morons.

Meh, if it were me I'd just not feed the trolls. Any more attention you give him is more than he deserves.
And I guess I should elaborate a little on the comment I made for your video, since Crackmonkey=me (it's an older handle of mine that I still use from time to time when others are taken). I didn't mean to insult your video in any way, I think it's a great piece of work. And I do think it's a great concept for a video. What I meant by my comment was more along the lines of it being the only real thing that would hurt you as far as the contest goes. -
I really can't say one video or another should be up in the top 5 that already isn't. In fact, I could probably choose 10 other videos that I feel also deserved one of those spots. There's just that much awesome from this competition.
Picking the finalists couldn't have been an easy decision, and it's not one I would have wanted to make. -
Yeah, even youtube comments are better than dredging through some of that mess. And that's saying quite a bit.
-
Wow. I think you just won yourself an internet for that one.
-
Congrats to the finalists! I'm going to have a hard time choosing my favorite, even if it is down to 5 choices now...
-
Can't say I noticed, though it's not something I pay too much attention to.
