Weird... I'm not feeling the "love" in this thread
Ok I just did my first AE mission yesterday... I'm sorry if this is old for all of you but still being new I have to ask... what's he complaining about? At first I read it as people are "exploiting" it to get xp faster which I'm a huge fan of but I'm not seeing how AE missions would do that so if that's possible I'd love to find out lol... and I also don't see how or why it would need to be nerfed unless it's also affecting his gameplay experience... unless it's just the issue of the spam... in which case ignore is featured in EVERY mmo for a reason. -
LMAO
I tend to stick with builds that make sense in my head... I'm sure that ice/fire or fire/ice blasters are awesome... but I can't bring myself to make one as I can't justify the concept. I've tried to get past this and have to a small degree I figure I can justify assault rifles (or archery for that matter)/anything and anything/devices by saying well he can manipulate element X but chooses to use assault rifles or devices also.
So most of my builds tend to stick to that line of thinking and when I deviate from it I almost don't enjoy playing the toon... I made a rad/energy blaster... I can't play him... it just doesn't feel right -
All the ones I can think of have already been mentioned but I wanted to reiterate (even though this is purely wishful thinking) the original poster's idea of having more direct control over the animation. All of my blasters are magic because I can't make a natural blaster and justify fire coming out of his mouth with no bottle of high proof alcohol paired with a lighter to be seen.
Just like I can't stand the fact that my natural tank has the inexplicable ability to jump as far and high as he does... but I'm not going to go without a travel power and it still looks more "natural" than him flying lol. -
Kinda what I figured but that still leaves the question of the choppy movement from npcs and vehicles... is that from the server then? I play almost exclusively on Virtue if that matters.

Looking for someone familiar with download speeds and their effect on online gaming (CoH specifically of course lol).
I switched from cable to dsl today and went from 12Mb/s to less than 3... I've not noticed a huge difference in gameplay but my fear is that it may be an issue on larger teams/events (such as lord winter) I have the option to upgrade to double speed or stick with cable. Also I noticed tonight that movement from npcs and vehicles was very choppy but I switched back to cable (haven't had it disconnected yet obviously) and noticed the same thing. Thoughts? -
Quote:That is another look at it I suppose, I hadn't really considered that as I'm still not at a point that I've concerned myself too much with doing max damage or whatever. My highest lvl toon is my fire/fire blaster who just hit 32 yesterday so who knows that may change. On the other hand, playing a game with little to no detailed information is no fun either. Believe it or not, back around release, City of Heroes was extremely secretive with any kind of detailed information. I'm not talking about cryptic behind the scenes stuff like taunt mechanics, but basic information like how much damage a power deals. All we had to go on was power descriptions like "high damage." Wait, was "superior damage" more or less than "extreme damage"? Why is a Blaster "medium damage" attack dealing as much as my "heavy damage"?
The premise was that the devs didn't want to bog down the player with numbers - none of that theory crafting nonsense. Just pick up the game, pick powers that sounded cool and go. You wouldn't believe how much confusion the lack of good information caused; it was very frustrating. What did people do? Try to figure out what was going on.
Having access to numbers and theorycrafting is very helpful. Someone is having end issues but is only slotting toggles for end reduc? We can show how to brind end under control and why slotting attacks for end reduc is better than slotting toggles. Someone wants to make an AV soloing Tanker, but currently can't out damage their regen? We can calculate dps well enough to help them achieve their goals. In this case, we can explain the nuances of taunt mechanics and explain why Tankers have problems holding aggro off, say a Shield Scrapper. (One of the harder feats for a Tanker to do, imo.)
That's not to say I don't think theorycrafting can go too far, it can. In CoH, I think it's at a pretty happy medium. If you want to know the nitty gritty about how something works, you can get some pretty in depth details. However, if you have no interest in it, it isn't thrust upon you like it is in other MMOs. Personally, I don't have much use for attack chains for AV soloing, etc. So, for the most part I ignore it. I do keep the information in the back of my mind if we're ever in a situation where I want to deal as much damage as possible. (Say, against Reichsman on the Khan TF.)
It's much easier to ignore numbers in this game than others, and people are generally respectful of that if you let them know upfront.
(Btw, while it's obvious you have no interest in it, some people actually find it very interesting/fun. I suspect you can guess which side of the fence I'm on.)
(Wow, this was a lot longer than I originally intended. Oops..)
The term alone scares me only because it (strictly opinion to follow) ruined WoW. Whether you wanted to do PvE or PvP you pretty much had a very specific build/gear set that you were expected to have and in some cases some PUG leaders would drop you if you didn't adhere to them.
e.g. I have always played "blaster" type classes, black mage in FFXI, mage in WoW... as a mage in WoW you were expected to have a very specific build based on the gear you happened to have and as your gear got better your theoretical DPS would increase with a different spec and you were expected to adhere to that. Some guild masters were very lenient with this as long as your dps averaged a certain figure but it made the game so much more about watching a damage meter than actually getting into why you were killing the massive dragon or whatever happened to be in front of you.
I do understand the benefit of it however, as you pointed out I have no interest in it... for now at least -
This ^
Personally I prefer Virtue, typically it has the second highest population but that's not the only reason.
I don't get into RPing at all I tried it but all my characters just become virtual versions of me just with different powersets/appearances lol. However, teaming with a group of RPers is so much more fun than just random people out to grind xp which I'm not opposed to at all, but with mostly RPers it's like watching a comic book movie that you actually get to be a part of. -
Quote:I have to agree with this. I met my girlfriend online, not through CoH but she happens to play which was actually what part of our first conversation consisted of. All in all she's the most awesome girl ever (took me 30 years to find a girl I could have an intelligent conversation with) but the similar interest in video games makes for a huge difference. e.g. I asked her something last week and she said "hang on, I can't pause this"... do you know how FREAKING AWESOME it is to have a girl say that to you when most can't comprehend that same statement?! lol*bland expression* Are you f###ing kidding me? This is the definition of stereotyping, and the basis of discrimination.
I met my boyfriend through an online game. We've been dating for three years now. "Psychoses"? Eff you, too, bucko.
Ultimately, most relationships fail because of how they start which is usually due to some kind of physical attraction... which I do think is necessary but if there's no common ground other than that it eventually comes to light just how shallow the relationship really is and it becomes dooooomed.
As far as meeting people through a game, a very good friend of mine met his girlfriend of several years through FFXI and they're quite happy together, and they both play CoX :P -
LOL I'm actually hoping not to see it anymore or at least not too often. It's one of the things that made WoW less and less fun. People doing everything they could to calculate the best theoretical damage. There's actually a tool that someone made for WoW that you could enter the specific boss fight, class and spec and party make up to tell you what you're DPS should be based on the info you provided. People would do that and then make adjustments to make it as high as possible with no consideration given to actually ya know, ENJOYING the game lol.

Quote:I'm guessing most of these answers are WAY more detail than you need or want.
Firstly, yes, Taunt *CAN* be used over and over to generate aggro. It does not have any diminishing returns.
No, you should probably not be a 'taunt bot'. The only time that's really called for, in my opinion, is when fighting a REALLY powerful enemy that can obliterate your teammates if you lose aggro for even a second. Very few enemies are that nasty. Most of the AV's in the Statesman Task Force are that bad. A handful of others, here and there.
A lot of the time, just punching stuff ('Gauntlet' effect - sort of a mini-taunt when you hit anyone) and having your taunt aura running will be enough. Some taunt auras are better than others.
Some of the time, these things will not be enough. A scrapper with a taunt aura who is doing decent damage can pull aggro off you. Of course, he can probably survive it.... for a short time.
Personally, I don't use Taunt much in most situations. It just isn't needed . . . oh, 80+ percent of the time. The only time I'll use it a lot is when fighting something really tough - then I'll put it in my attack chain. Taunt, 3 or 4 attacks, Taunt again.
You're exactly right... I can appreciate the effort people put into theorycrafting but this is what I was looking for. I realize that it's not entirely necessary in CoX but as a tank I want all the baddies on me. I realize it's just a game but when I'm playing I look at whatever AT I'm playing like my job and I take pride in doing it well. I want people to not have any room to say "that guy sucked" lol. Plus I've seen tanks run in grab a few baddies and not really pay attention to aggro loss and have things running around to hit the blasters or whatever. I want the blaster or scrapper on my team to be able to go full bore in terms of damage without having to worry about getting smacked around because I'm not holding aggro.
Theorycrafting aside I joined a blind invite team that I shouldn't have (see my signature lol) I knew it was a bad idea but I wanted to tank for a team and thought why not? I would taunt to pull then if there were more than 5 mobs target one of the "loose" ones and taunt again when it was up. I didn't put it on auto or anything but used it more frequently than I've noticed and got exactly what I wanted, surrounded taking all the damage. However this was a blind invite so inevitably it happened... people starting going in different directions and we eventually wiped and half quit lol. -
Should I taunt everytime it's up?
In some MMOs "taunt" or whatever it might be named can be used over and over again to continue generating aggro. Is that true for CoH or is it only really needed if you lose aggro? -
Quote:To kinda add to this... always remember what the 2nd M in MMO stands for. This and all MMOs are designed to be played with other people. You can solo any AT (some more effectively than others) but it will never be as fun as running around with a group destroying everything you see.Definitely try teaming. Once you settle on a server (nothing wrong with Virtue), check out that server's part of the forums and ask about global channels for server events, team finding, etc. These are your best way to find teams. Looking for a team in broadcast (the default way) just isn't that effective any more because most people don't loiter in the open zones.
The real benefit of teaming with people is that it helps you find and hopefully identify people who share your interests in playing this game. If you add them as friends (per character, no permission needed) or global friends (know when they're on with any character, permission required), you can grow a support network of people who share your interests.
You can play solo many character types very well in this game, but some fun content is intended for teams, some rewards are most efficiently gained by teams, and generally, at least chatting with people while you play (teamed or not) is a whole lot more interesting. Take it from me... I solo a lot.
Also, as someone else already pointed out... go ahead and buy the game... for $20 you get full access and the first month free so you can really dig in and find out if it's for you or not. Most $60 console games don't give you that and even if they do the amount of replay value is crap relatively speaking... you've got some people that have been playing this game for 5 years and I'm sure still log in daily lol. -
I found the surgeon just gotta wait til I get home to buy the magic booster... $20 bucks just for a character concept... but at least I'll have them for my other toons too
-
-
I've only purchased one (the science one) thus far. It's not telling me I have a limit just to try again later or tomorrow?
-
-
I'm trying to buy the Magic and Science booster packs and it's giving me an error when I try to buy the Magic one and after buying the Science one I'm still not able to change my body type (all for a character concept lol) is there some lag in it updating and does that prevent you from purchasing a second one right after the first?
-
Thank you all... now I just need to get home to try it lol.
-
I play almost exclusively on Virtue and it is highly populated(usually 1st or 2nd in terms of pop)... as pointed out though with the game being so instance heavy you may notice that it appears empty, it's not. Once you get comfortable with where to look for teams and channels etc. you should be ok. If you're looking for a team make sure you set that as your status under the "team" option in your chatbox. You don't even have to do that. I get random invites on a regular basis and those are usually (thank god) preceded with a /t asking instead of just being blindly invited.
-
so in it's most basic form I would just do...
/cce 2 CCEvilLaugh
Sorry I'm sure I'm making it more complicated than it is lol
Assuming that's right (I pulled it from the link provided, thanks Dying Breath!), how do I then bind it to a key? -
Quote:Acrobatics is not worth taking.
What to focus on...depends on your play. If you strictly team...slot for defense. If you strictly solo...slot for offense.
I try to balance it.
Sidenote: I would have picked Rise to the Challenge as soon as it was available and I would have picked up Indomitable Will at level 10.
Maybe I'll try to respec as such when I get home... I just wanted to take as much offensive stuff as I could earlier so I could still feel like I was able to solo without it taking 4 minutes to kill a mob lol. -
Fairly straight forward... I'm not looking for someone to make me a build but I'm not sure what I should focus on first...
At lvl 10 I have High Pain Tolerance and Mind Over Body for WP and Jab, Punch and Haymaker from SS. Also I have combat Jumping and plan to take Super Jump... is Acrobatics worth taking as well since I'll already have two reqs?
Should I focus more on defense or offense while slotting? or does it really even matter while lvling? I made him so long ago that he has a free respec and figure if I've done anything wrong now's a good time to fix it lol. -
Quote:30? lol now THAT'S optimistic :P I think 2 a day is more likely from what I've seen and I've only been playing for a few months but the amount of people spouting off ridiculous opinions and theories on this is astoundingly funny lol.Your optimism is astounding.
I bet we'll see at least 30 threads starting over it between now and the end of January, some percentage of which will say any redname post to that effect is actually a lie to keep "everyone" from moving to Freedom. (Me, I'm thinking about who I can move OFF of there.)
Either way I'm stoked about it! -
Ok so I've tried to read and the macro/bind function has me completely lost.
I'm trying to figure out how to make a macro to change costumes with an emote but I'm not understanding how to do that at all.
I know the comman for a custome change is /cc 0-4 (depending which your changing to) but I have no idea how to bind that and add an emote to it. Can someone give me an example specifically using /cc 1 and the evil laugh emote? -
Quote:Welcome to City of Heroes
I tried this game 4 years ago, and I'm still here, after trying many others. The community is better here than any other I have been on and this game done not need phat lewt to be fun...but it helps
I play on just about all of the servers, some are quieter thatn others, but never had problems teaming on any of them. Try Freedom or Virtue first, and remember their is the same % of idiots on all servers, so on the higher populated ones you will see more of them but it evens itself out
Good luck
This, although I tried it about 4 years ago and kept playing WoW as I was already kinda deep into it and wasn't ready to let go of it at the time. Just recently started playing again a couple months ago and really wish I'd have given it a better shot back when I first started it.
I've tried a ton of other MMOs and as stated above the community in CoX is top notch... yes like in any MMO you're going to have your share of idiots but they've been very VERY few compared to the other MMOs that I've tried. Even on the forums if you happen to read a thread where people are having a disagreement that's all it is... on other forums it turns into a flamewar with nothing but insults because the people involved lack the intelligence to have a civil difference of opinion.
Anyway, got off-track... the game's awesome... the community makes it that much better.
