Nah - you rock. Of course, now we must add modesty to the list. What rhymes wit that?

Aaaand I posted this on Facebook - I had no idea this sort of thing was possible! The wonderful thing is the more people know about how stuff work, the more their minds should be blown (I've got one friend in particular who, using that logic, should be completely and utterly dumbfounded).
Thank you so much for sharing! -
I'd much rather have something like this than nothing at all. But then, i find this stuff interesting.

Quote:I would like to see that. I can't remember if it was a dev or player hopes/speculation that somehow the end-game rewards could be used to benefit other characters on the account, but I thought that would be a great idea. For instance, unlocking weapon customizations, even if its just a single-use token for a single character, would be great. Or capes, auras, etc.If these are costume piece unlocks, please very seriously consider making them account wide unlocks as a standard or account wide unlocks at a premium price--say 5 times what might be a single character unlock.
Some of us aren't so interested in OMG power, but if it can be made to make things easier/faster or more interesting for lower level characters? That'd be great -
A few months ago I had the wonderful privilege of pinching a nerve in my back. Took me out of work for about a week and I got to enjoy some fun medicines in the meantime. Needless to say, I couldn't game. In fact, for a while, I couldn't even sit at my home computer desk without pain. At work I had to learn how to mouse with my left hand (thankfully, I'm left handed, so it went smoothly) because using my right hand would hurt.
Fast forward to now: the only reminder of the incident is I'm still mousing left-handedly and my right pointer finger (aka, "Mister Clicky") is still a little numb in the tip. But using my home computer is no problem, thankfully.
I had uninstalled COH so I'd be undistracted for some projects, and now with i20 out I'm wanting to tip-toe back in. But, my old control scheme (WASD and powers on the left hand, mouse and team stuffs on the right) isn't going to do me much good. Given the layout of the keyboard, a straight mirroring is impossible (particulary because the num pad is my teaming buddy). So, I need to restart and see where things go from there.
What works for you? How do you maneuver deftly around the keyboard, subjugating the mouse to your whims? -
Yep. Hopefully this'll be another step towards the two countries eventually reconciling and living amicably as good neighbors

As I posted on COH's Facebook page, this makes me very happy to be an NCSoft customer. I especially appreciate the links above since, by providing them, its easier for me to make suggestions to people about where to donate. By providing direct ways to donate, we can help others to do so and hopefully prevent them from getting caught in a scam trying to look like a chance to help.
Sickening to think about, I know, but that's the world we live in.
Anyhow - to everyone at NCSoft: Mahalo nui loa! Domo arigato gozaimas! Gamsahamnida! Mauururu maita'i! Mucho gracias! Salamat! I've got friends here from Japan with friends and family over there, and its hard on them because they can't be there for them. I've got distant relatives in Japan and Okinawa. The state of Hawai'i in general is full of issei (first generation to arrive here), nissei (second generation), sansei (third generation) and more of folks with Japanese friends and family (both blood and extended 'ohana). If I could give all of you a hug, I would!

edit: Posted this on another forum I go to in our COH thread... hopefully this will help inspire more folks to donate -
Quote:Have MMO sequels really done well enough to justify a COH2? I read an article years ago suggesting that they are likely to cause a portion of players to leave then split the remaining players, causing both games to be weaker than the original, but one of them having a massive development bill dragging it down.Paragon Studios should sell 'lifetime' subscriptions, with one twist: They should announce that the 'lifetime' will be only 5 years, and they will spend the money they get from the subs to develop CoH2 during that time.
Given that situation, I'd buy two subscriptions. (I only have one now, but I'd like to encourage them to develop a new game.)
The only way I'd want a City of Heroes 2 is if there was a Marvel Ultimate Alliance- or Freedom Force-style City of Heroes 1. Sequels for stand alone, non-MMO games? Sure. I'd go for that...
*cough*BlackPebbleareyoureadingthis*cough* -
Random note: since going annual on COH and getting a lifetime on STO? I've actually played both game less than when I was a monthly subscriber. One of the biggest selling features for any game is not some graphics feature or gameplay element - its the players of the game. As such, while Paragon/NCSoft has got my money (and less of it to boot), they don't have me nearly as much, helping my SG, doing PUGs, etc.
If that's the norm for long-term subscribers and lifers, I'd argue its not so helpful for the game. The instanced nature of COH can make it look deceptively empty at times, and that could be a turn-off for people who are trialing the game or deciding if they want to stick with it.
Random note #2: I personally think that's one of the reasons why we've got Leagues, the queing system and these big raids coming in i20. Even if the player population doesn't change, I think it'll look fuller and busier because you'll have all these players in one place working together.
On topic: I think I would get a lifetime to COH if made available as I'm reasonably sure it will last long enough for me to get my money's worth and more. However, as a 6-year player (who, again, went annual), I would imagine NCSoft/Paragon would greatly prefer me to pay for another 6-years on a subscription than to just get a single lifetime purchase from me.
I mean, hell, notice that Ultima Online, EQ1, Asheron's Call, Lineage I, etc., are much older than COH and have yet to offer lifetimes or go to some sort of free to play model (freemium, micros, etc). -
I think I heard about that on Clark Howard - even if someone could knab your card numbers (either online or taking a picture of the card), they wouldn't be able to use them without the card itself. I would much rather have that built into my card than that stupid "wave over the sensor instead of swiping!" feature I'm seeing more and more of. Of course, he was also saying the US is quite a bit behind when it comes to credit card security compared to other countries (wish he gave examples of how theirs are better/different).

Quote:Not really, but then I've never really gone into the Shadow Shard much. Besides, when you look at comics how many different villains are working toward the same goal? There's room for competition when it comes to conquering the world/multiverse, and if they don't join up, they might end up fighting each other (which leads to other story possibilities - "enemy of my enemy" and all that).Side-stepping the worrying and rather mind boggling poor design concerns, is anyone else disappointed in the plot they're pushing forward? I could maybe buy into the whole "The Well's gone mad is empowering Cole" idea...but turning Cole into a conqueror of the multiverse? We kind of already have one of those...he's called Rularuu.

While I might get hit for saying this, but at least its not tradable currencies. Why? Those stupid RMT-farmers/spammers.
And the way I see it - with these conversion rates? I figure that it won't affect soloists so much as folks who've been farming shards like crazy hoping they could get a head-start on the next Slots. That is assuming that Threads can be earned at a sane pace while playing solo.
Now, if all the Incarnate content can drop shards, and each slot gets its own currency that you can also buy with shards? I think, and could well be wrong on this, the expectation is you'll be earning shards from Alpha to Omega, so shards will be that universal filler/substitute when you want something but don't have it. I don't think they expect us to make everything soley from Incarnate shards.
But, until we see open beta and patch notes, can't say for sure (and it could always change - this is a MMO). -
Quick thought: while passwords and challenges are good, they won't necessarily help with keyloggers should someone be unfortunate enough to have acquired one. I heard some games have a virtual keypad where you can enter a 4-digit PIN, and the numbers themselves randomly rearrange themselves after each press.
And, of course, there's that whole physical authenticator thingies (how do those work, anyhow?)... some of the guilds I know for one of those other games require members of a certain rank and above to have one of those (be it the doohicky itself or the app for the iPhone or Android). Not that I'd want that, necessarily (unless a WP7 version was made - I <3 my Focus!). -
I hope there'll be more questions, as those are typical of most banks and credit cards. Everyone's using the "good" questions, you know?
Regardless, I've always been pleased with the security NCSoft has offered me to date (particularly my NC master account and game account being able to have different log-ins and passwords), so this is fantastic news. Thank you very much - the safer our accounts are, the better for everyone. -

Caulderone, while I'll admit this is mostly theory on my part, I think the devs' focus on group content like this is both diversifying what COH has to offer as well as addressing a long-standing "weakness." It seems most games start hardcore/group then as they age focus on casual/solo... I guess we're seeing the reverse here as COH spent most of its life being casual/solo. Also note that this content is more of a repeatable nature by design.
Hopefully you'll see more content that appeals to you before your renewal comes up. While my SG and I have (much to our surprise) enjoyed the current focus of the content/systems, I can readily understand why its not going to appeal to everyone. -
I'm more curious about what we're not seeing... stuff they're holding back on for PR purposes or because they're not certain it'll make it into i20 (ie, stretch goals). But, overall, looks great to me. Sort of wondering how a League in Siren's Call or Bloody Bay would work out.
-
Unreal Tournament's Assault mode. PVP with purpose, direction, and required more teamwork than deathmatch.
And I loved trying Siren's Call during COV's beta, even if it was a laggy, low-framerate nightmare of performance! -
Ojbective: works. Didn't have any problems with it.
Subjective: I do like it, however, I'm not sure if I like the fact the EULA (ie, that thing nobody reads) is on the log-in screen. Also, I find it a little curios that NCSoft will let me patch COH before verifying I have an account (trial, active, etc). Not that I mind, of course, but it seems like a possible cost savings.
The fact that clicking on server status used my open/default browser instead of IE is highly appreciated. -
Objective feedback: Windowblinds makes it look a little funny. Solution is to make the NCLauncher a total exception, not getting skinned at all.

Silly question, I suppose, but I thought it might be fun. If you're like me there are comics that have come and gone that you remember fondly. Comics, thanks to Portal Corp and alternate dimensions, could be introduced into the game without too too much fuss (in theory).
For instance, I would love to see someone pick up and do something with Neal Adams' old Continuity line of comics. Megalith, Armor, Cyberrad, etc. I remember those from high school, and thought the characters were pretty interesting (although a haze of nostalgia and Neal Adam's pencils might make them better in memory than in fact).
Likewise, I remember reading a few scattered issues of The Elementals (Comico?), and that was pretty cool. I've got an issue hiding somewhere around the house where Thor gets his butt handed to him by some lady that looks like an ill-tempered Basia Trzetrzelewska. I remember hearing the story was pretty good if you kept up with it.
And, I can't make this kind of list without thinking of the old Chris Claremont and Alan Davis version of Excaliber. Too much fun, with a wide range of emotions, moods and super-cool characters. Plus, could you think of any other group more appropriate for hopping across worlds?
What about the rest of you? -
Quote:Same here, although I personally feel the money is really made on the "cheap" stuff and convenience items and consumables. How about like this:
- Hami-O's: $2 each
- DoubleXP inspiration (lasts 24 hours): $5
- Hero epic AT: $5
- Villain epic AT: $5
- Hero to villain/villain to hero transfer: $2
- Field crafter pet: $2
- Extra costume slot: $2
- Wings costume pack: $5
- Resistance costume pack: $1
- Praetorian police costume pack: $1
TO/DO/SO enhancements and inspirations are perfect examples of a salable item in my mind. While they can be obtained in-game via drops/vendors, buying them would be a lot faster and far more convenient for players. Because they age and expire, they're consumables. Inspirations are, obviously, consumable by nature, although I wouldn't bother with the little ones necessarily. While I doubt anyone wants yet another in-game currency, I think it would be needed to buy what you want in a more sensible fashion than the current system in place.
Temp powers would be another good possibility - how many of them are already limited use or on a timer? Not all of them should be available, staying reserved for arcs and the like, but its a possibility. My personal opinion is that Day Job powers should not be available for free players via the normal means. Badges would be fine, but not the powers. I think you've got the right idea with the DoubleXP inspiration (I'd lower the amount and price, though), and that could serve as the basis for some of the passive/auto Day Job powers.
I think that free players should have restricted access to the AE - if they want to play AE missions, then I'd say they'll literally need AE "tickets" (like amusement park rides) to do so, or a limit per day or something. If they want to buy tickets or a day pass (be it through micros or in-game currency) that'd be fine.
I've got other ideas, but overall I think the capacity for COH to go F2P or Freemium is there. Now, the balancing act between too much for free (Dungeon Runners) or being too stingy/Pay2Win (some Korean F2P games) on the other hand? I envy no development team trying to work that issue out @_@
Note: I'm a firm believer that microtransactions should be primarily Time vs Money convenience items and/or vanity items, and that some things should be only be obtained through playing the game rather than purchased. -
I think the biggest question would be, "Is the game profitable?" Certainly UO, AC, etc., have been going on for eons (in gamer-years) and profitably, so I don't see why COH has to be any different.
And I agree - GR (and its related content) is very much about player retention. It does provide a good starting point, of course. Pity the i19 Fitness changes weren't available when GR launched - that would've been useful, methinks.
The fun thing, to me at least, is the idea that COH's physical servers could eventually be come virtualized servers on some other game's servers. That could potentially reduce costs. Same with Guild Wars for that matter. Computing power is only getting cheaper, so that could be to the benefit of the game. If the devs ever pull cross-server teaming out of a hat, there'd be no real reason to reduce the number of servers to enable activities.
Oh, and I should point out that I, and people like me, are partly to blame for the numbers going down. I went annual, so they make less money off of me than people on monthly. And I've got friends who might've gone for the annual when NCSoft had that special going on -
I'm quite happy with what I've read so far, thank you very much. Its giving me hope that the zone events/giant monsters at lower levels will eventually be turned into something more interesting as well! Poor Lusca!
I've been a huge fan of open-quest type systems, and this sounds to be right up my alley. I think my SG will love it, too
