I don't think we're in disagreement. Like I said, I think this is an admirable attempt at growing PvP, and you helped clarify some things-thank you. I think the biggest problem all leagues face here is the lack of people willing to captain; to be decent at it, it takes a combination of knowledge, time, and patient which few people have. When you consider that the overall reward everyone got for those types of efforts in the past was freakin' i13, you can see why people are so reluctant to keep putting themselves out.

Quote:I can certainly appreciate and relate to the efforts everyone have made in attempt to accomplish the above. No offense was meant in my first post. This format is designed to make both the hardcore pvp'r happy, and the new pvp'r happy. This is a combo ladder/league. Teams will organize, a few already are. They will put up their roster just like on test. Then they will draft out of what is left that signed up.
The PVPEC has to put together events that embrace the new pvp'r. This event is not only meant to embrace them, but is also designed to make it where the Veterans teach them. Where its in their best interest to do so.
That being said, I'm having trouble following this:
Quote:If your Division 8 team does not mentor and help the Division 6 team then you will not win the season no matter how good your "stacked" Division 8 team is.
Quote:The problem with the old league was being it was all draft the good players wouldn't show up because their teams sucked. The not so good players didnt stand a chance because they didn't have anyone to mentor them. This League is designed to be a happy medium to hopefully solve both problems to make a viable team competition.
No matter what format we chose there is always going to be one or 2 teams that are going to dominate. That has been true for every organized pvp event in this game. Atleast this way though its not just an "elite kool kids" society, everyone gets to play and have fun. -
I don't think it's possible to have everyone 100% pleased when it comes to line-up submissions. In competitive matches, it certainly seems pointless to fight a round in which you pretty much know what the outcome is going to be (based on line-up/map combos). On the other hand, the back-and-forth line-up swapping at the arena terminals can get boring in a hurry. In a draft league, line-up options are usually pretty limited anyway, so just having a small window of time for line-up decision PvP is all that's needed.

How many knowledgeable, team-arena PvP'rs do you guys have at this point? Maybe I'm missing something, and not to insult anyone, but doesn't this format allow for everyone in that group to just enter on either 1 or 2 preassembled teams? It just seems that the most likely scenario here will be that only a couple of knowledgeable PvP'rs will be willing to captain a team, and then those couple of captains will recruit every other decent PvP'r before a draft ever occurs. Correct me if I'm wrong in thinking there are less than 24 upper-end PvP'rs now; I'm basing numbers off what I've been reading on the boards.
Maybe the purpose of this league is different than the other leagues I've been a part of, but I assumed that the goals of a PvP league were to 1. distribute knowledgeable PvP'rs as evenly as possible in order for them to better the newer players, and to 2. keep matches relatively competitive overall. The overall point being to grow a solid PvP playerbase through the league...which results in more and better ladder teams (not to mention better kickballs, zone activity, and future leagues). -
I used to host kickballs several times a week on Infinity, and this sort of thing came up a few times. I feel this way: if you're willing to jump in the pool of picks when you aren't a captain, then you should be willing to stick with the team you're dealt, even if you know it means certain defeat.
Maybe it's obvious to most of the participants what the outcome of a given match is going to be (based on picks), but there's usually someone present that needs to learn. And learning is a big part of kickball. Just try to use that as an opportunity to show someone why the loss was inevitable. If you don't feel like teaching/explaining, then I say just don't kickball...or step up and demand to be a captain and stop complaining.
Also, maybe you can use a "no-win" opportunity to practice. I actually found impossible situations helpful sometimes because they helped remind me of my limitations and still helped to improve my reaction times. As long as you explain to newer players that you're likely going to lose because of X or Y before the match starts, you'll have a lot fewer attitude problems while your team takes a beating. -
I started reading this thread and couldn't stop. It was like seeing a bad traffic accident and not being able to look away, regardless of the gore and terror.

Unless something has changed code-wise, defeats should still count for/against the side you were on within the setup terminal.
Emping whenever that happened was always a challenge, but as long as your team isn't getting wrecked and isn't spread out on a large map, it's not impossible. Buff cycles aren't difficult to remember-fort/cm/ab timers start running in the back of your mind after you emp enough. Being ready to heal a teammate that just got debuffed isn't always easy without a vocal que; otherwise, you can try watching overhead health bars. -

I'm glad you've kept your signature. I remember hearing about Macron, and I hope his family has recovered (as much as can be expected) after that tragedy. The memorial PvP event in his honor was a great display of respect from our community; did it become an annual event? (I can't remember-maybe it was going to be but Test was down the 2nd year.)

I'm not sure you included enough exclamation marks, but I appreciate the effort.

This thread still lives?! Well then. <3's!!!

RP: I believe that Status Crow is the best RP'r the server has ever seen. He formed PCSAR (Paragon City Search and Rescue), an SG full of players that patrol the zones for players needing help (heals, buffs, rez, etc.).
The Taxibots, which "taxi" people through zones via TP, and the St. Joe's people are great RP'rs too. I almost forget the SDF (Simian Defense Force); silly monkies-another great RP group. I have no idea if any of these groups are still around.
PvP: ABH, dUmb, Hell's Army, CoD, Killswitch, OSHA Academy...ah, memories. I guess whoever is left that PvPs has moved to FreedUmb.
Teams/TF: As stated, make some friends and get on some global channels, and this won't be a problem...unless things have changed.
Infinity: The Unofficial PvP Server!!! Oh wait. Sorry.
I'm here because I can't sleep and made a trial account in order to post. I haven't played in over a year I think...so I guess that makes everything I said above and anything I would've added below completely irrelevant. (See comments regarding snarkiness.) -
I still had the IPvPL season 2 word document I made forever ago. I made a couple of quick changes; it may not be entirely relevant now, but if any of it can be useful in some way, here it is:
Quote:Overview:
The Infinity Player versus Player League (IPvPL) is a league of teams that compete against one another in an arena setting throughout a season of play. Playoffs occur at the end of the season in order to decide the leagues champion. Captains are picked from willing volunteers, and these captains select teammates in the form of a draft. The number of teams and players are determined by sign-up numbers and a majority consensus. The number of season matches will be determined this way as well.
The Draft:
In order to have an accurate draft, we must have everyone that is willing to participate sign-up here (or have a friend sign them up). Captains will pick in a random order for the first round. (Captains will vote for either picking in random order again, reverse order, or the same order.) I will post the draft results here on the boards.
Substitutions:
Depending on sign-ups and how the captains feel, we may have a substitute pool, additional players on teams that are available each match as subs, or both. Regardless, no drafted players will be allowed to substitute for another team during the course of the season or playoffs. If a drafted player drops out, it will be up to his/her team to decide whether or not they will allow him/her back onto the team.
Rules of Play:
1. Matches must start within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. If a team is short on players (after any allowed substitutes enter) at the 15-minute mark, they must either forfeit or fight. There are no exceptions to this rule, because it is unfair and inconsiderate to the players that have arrived on time.
2. Matches will consist of 10-minute rounds. A team wins a match by winning 2 rounds of a match. (The sudden death tie-breaker will be ignored; like many of the dev PvP changes, it was a horrible, ill-conceived idea anyway.)
3. No more than 4 rounds will be played for a match. Typically, this means best 2 out of 3, but ties are possible if a team has a win, a loss, and two ties after 4 rounds of play. A match win is awarded to a team that wins a single round if the other 3 rounds are ties.
4. Only arena store-bought (tier-1) inspirations are allowed.
5. If a player is caught with anything but tier-1 inspirations, his or her team will forfeit the match.
6. During each round, 1 player from each team must say in broadcast all in before teams engage.
7. If the all in isnt given by both teams by the 9:30 mark, the short-handed team may call for a reset; however, only one reset can be requested for each round of play. If both teams are short, the reset doesnt count against either team. After a team has used its one reset for a round and is short-handed, it will be forced to fight handicapped, as the match must start by 9:30 remaining.
8. Teams having players that disconnect for any reason after each all in will just be down each player that does so for the remainder of that round. There is no way to make this 100% fair, as losing players can pull the plug at will. A reset can only occur if both teams are in undisputed agreement.
9. If a player engages the opposing team before the all in from each team is given, that round is forfeited to the opposing team.
10. Results of matches must be reported to me by captains from each team, and I will be posting those results (only wins/losses/ties) here on the boards.
Code of Conduct:
I dont think we should really need to say anything here, but Im going to anyway. This league is for everyone from novice to vet. It is a competitive league, but bad sportsmanship should not be tolerated. There is no reason for anyone to be disrespectful. There will most likely be relatively new-to-PvP players participating, and the last thing I think we should want is for these players to feel unwelcomed by either their teammates or their opponents. By signing up for this league, you are agreeing to not only abide by the decided rules, but also to abstain from questionable behavior. Any complaints about behavior should be addressed here on the boards. The league members will reserve the right to vote any player out of the league. A vote will be held on the boards to do this if at least 2 league members call for the vote.
Any rules and procedures may be tweaked at any time, but my goal is to make everything a majority decision whenever possible. What I need from everyone (willing to participate) is the following:
List your global name(s).
List all the builds you intend to use (primary/secondary/ancillary).
List if you desire to be a captain (even if youve already pmd me before).
List any comments or suggestions on any of the rules/procedures above.
Thanks,
Psoma

Is GR going to be the upcoming issue? If so, does it seem like it's close to beta (or is it already in closed or open beta)?

Insomnia and boredom have been plaguing me lately, and I've been itching to PvP again...but the thought of these devs having just one penny of my money irks the hell out of me. If I resub now, there won't be enough hot water in the world to help wash away my shame.
