STAR WARS EPISODE VII
EW.com spoke with "Star Wars" expanded universe author Timothy Zahn about the news of "Star Wars Episode VII" being a whole new story -- presumably not a film adaptation of his wildly successful "The Thrawn Trilogy."
"The books were always just the books," the author told EW, saying he was actually briefed on Lucas' plans for the sequels and how his novels would fit in to the universe. "The original idea as I understood it and Lucas changes his mind off and on, so it may not be what hes thinking right now but it was going to be three generations. Youd have the original trilogy, then go back to Lukes father and find out what happened to him [in the prequels], and if there was another 7th, 8th, or 9th film, it would be Luke's children. The Thrawn Trilogy really would have fit into the gap." -
The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals will hear arguments today on whether a negotiated 2001 deal DC Comics should prevent the daughter of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel from reclaiming his portion of the rights to the Man of Steel under a provision of U.S. copyright law. A federal judge determined in 2008 and 2009 that the writers heirs had successfully recaptured the copyright, asserting that because the 2001 agreement hadnt been formalized, there was no deal. The appeals court is also set to review a ruling allowing DC to sue Marc Toberoff, who represents both the Siegel family and the estate of his collaborator Joe Shuster, for interfering with its agreements with the heirs.
Also 2013 is the year that the Shuster estate can file termination of copyright sharing per the law. If that is the case, DC may have some negotiations to do with that particular estate. -
Agreed. As long as they felt the right people were in place they did seem to keep their hands off and their fingers crossed.

Newsarama offers some unsolicited advice to Disney about how to make the new movies:
http://www.newsarama.com/film/unsoli...star-wars.html
I find it hard to argue with most of this advice. -
Quote:The laserdiscs of the unaltered originals were transferred to DVD but were not shined up in the process, as I recall.Wasn't there a THX-enhanced version that did clean up the visuals/sound, but didn't have any of the stupid edits?
To be honest, to this day having owned the special editions and having seen the blu-ray versions of the originals and their latest revisions I can still say that the most pointless change was the Han/Greedo scene.
Scenes that give a better view of Mos Eisley or Cloud City for example I don't mind.
Also the one FIX that was way overdue until it finally arrived on DVD years ago was when they remastered and repaired the BROKEN lightsaber FX in Ep 4. Kenobi waving a stick that was shorting out and Vader turning to the closed hangar doors holding a white stick....... -

Quote:Yes the 9 movie concept was around since the start but ROTJ does bring things to a close:Yeah, the 9-movie idea was around at the beginning - and Uncle George did his best to backpedal away from it over the past decade. I really, really like the idea of Lucas providing the rough ideas and outline of a new trilogy, with someone else converting it into a polished, final product.
1. no more Death Stars
2. Emperor is gone
3. Vader is gone/Anakin redeemed
4. Luke is the last of the Jedi or first of the new depending on your point of view.
So what would be left? Things that we got in the books; imperial warlords vying for control, dark jedi/sith wannabes, mopping up imperial remnants. Grand Admiral Thrawn was the one that nearly toppled the Republic until the Vong came along.
So for ep 7 to 9.....what would we have for Luke and co. to face? A new Empire? Some sith wannabe that rediscovered lost Sith teachings?
Or......Grand Admiral Thrawn. The Heir the Empire book trilogy should easily sustain a trilogy, but they would have to time jump it a bit due to how much time has passed and how likely few of the main cast would likely NOT want to return (cough...Harrison Ford...cough).
If they did a Star Wars animated series set after ROTJ then they could easily adapt many of the EU novels with and use voice actors that resemble the voices of the main characters.
Disney has many options to explore and with the acquisition of all of Lucas' toys in addition to their own resources they definitely have the means to explore them.
Hmmm just had an interesting thought: for years the EU novels all had certain rules from Lucas, one particular rule is that the writers may NEVER kill Luke/Han and Leia, no exceptions and they MUST get his approval to kill other main characters, case in point Chewbacca. I wonder if any future EU novels will be bound by that rule or will someone finally be able to write a classy and epic finale to Luke/Han/Leia -
Quote:Let's go one better then Muppet Star Wars: ROBOT CHICKEN has done Star Wars and DC and is hoping to do the Marvel characters next.....I'd watch the pancake out of a buddy flick with Wolverine and Han Solo.
So how about Robot Chicken Marvel/Star Wars? Oh, and throw TRON into it too. -
Indeed it does, and I do understand that Lucas is feeling the years a bit more and wants to retire and move on and that he wants to ensure that his creation will continue without him. I honestly had thought that his kids would one day take over and who knows, perhaps when Lucas' chosen one decides to step aside perhaps one of Lucas' kids will take over still.
Still for all the actual and perceived problems of all six films, I do respect Lucas for all his other contributions to the industry as well as the fact that IF Star Wars had failed back in 1977......where WOULD the world of sci-fi be at now? Lucas and his creation changed things back then for the better, imo and I am glad that he wants to see it all go on without him.
Now here's hoping that Disney delivers.
Hmmmmm I wonder if Joss Whedon has any Star Wars ideas. -
What's funny is that a co-worker of mine went into full on nerd rage at work when he heard of this and was ranting that Lucas had flipped his lid, gone senile, etc etc etc and was ranting how Lucas could do this. Then I showed him how much money Lucas got for this deal and he said and I quote
"A price tag that magnitude......answers ALL of my questions." -
Quote:From the article: "We didn't ascribe any value to the Indiana Jones franchise as part of this acquisition," Iger said later on in the call, suggesting no further installments of that franchise is on the horizon. The link I posted I was updated. Said basically that there's not going to be any further Indy movies. Or at least that's how I read it.
They're calling it Episode 7, so I imagine it's going to be a continuation rather than remaking Ep 4-6.
The thing that I worry about is the state of fan films and fan art. I can't exactly see Disney being very liberal about allowing such fan works with the property, now that they've spent over $4 billion on it. Would hate to see it all disappear due to the same company that pretty much extended copyright to the point of ridiculousness (Star Wars won't be in the Public Domain for another 60 years, presuming no further extensions, of which I am extremely skeptical).
So....they did obtain it but are shelving it? Or it wasn't part of the deal? I can't recall of Lucas solely owns Indy or if Spielberg and he were co-owners. -
I have to be honest, I truly never saw this coming. This can be a change for good, or for the worse. Lucas will be "Creative consultant" but Disney will of course have the option of rejecting his input which could in turn be bad also. Despite the success of Avengers and Marvel's movies, I honestly can't calculate how this will go in terms of future Star Wars movies.
Now comes the question: is the 2015 movie going to be the long await episode 7, OR....will Disney risk potential Star Wars blasphemy in the eyes of some fans by remaking all six movies from scratch with new cast and crew and THEN moving forward with new films? If the do remake the classics, Nathan Fillion of Firefly/Serenity/Castle MUST be Han Solo. Also if they do remake the originals ALL scenes with Darth Vader need not be remade, just use the stock footage. James Earl Jones still has some years left but would he want to return to voice Vader again, and could they get anyone that would sound close enough to be the new Vader voice?
Also, there is another film franchise of Lucas' to think about that could be affected by this: INDIANA JONES. As I recall, Ford and Shia were contracted for two movies and despite the feed back of Crystal Skull they were still planing a 5th Indy movie.......so now what happens with Indiana Jones? Reboot with new actor as Indy? Continue with new actor as Indy same as the Bond movies? or stick with the plan of passing to his son? -

I honestly never thought Lucas would sell, I thought he'd hand it down to his family. Still the money he is going to get for it is hard to refuse...... -
TRON UPRISING SCARS pt1
Dyson comes to Argon City and Tessler is not pleased at all, partly because even HE thinks that Dyson is a two faced weasel and aprtly due to the fact that his position of General is now at risk. He assigns his two lieutenants to be with Dyson and to make sure his visit is brief and uneventful. Dyson is mainly just going from base to base in the city making his presence known......clearly he was been sent by CLU to flush out the renegade.
TRON learns that Dyson has arrived....and he is NOT happy. He and Beck scout the area and TRON shows him Dyson and states he is CLU's top soldier and the deadliest and that Beck's orders are to bring Dyson back to TRON HQ so that TRON can extract data from him about CLU and his forces. Beck suggests just stealing his disc and TRON makes it more then crystal clear that he wants DYSON himself. TRON's scar has also spread over his face and Beck comments that TRON has been out of the healing chamber for too long. TRON states he hadn't noticed.
We see in the past that Dyson was loyal to TRON until some civil unrest instigated by CLU against the ISO's caused Dyson to get a disc in the face leaving his face half damaged. After that Dyson was against the ISO's and wanted them gone. Flynn came into the system and assured them ISO's were the future.
In the present Beck trains in the simulator to fight Dyson and beats the sim, but won't derez it despite TRON ordering him to.
Dyson is talking about the renegade with Tessler's lieutenants and detects the trap set for him and deals with it. Beck stays hidden and Dyson is curious about what happened. Paige asks him if he thinks the Renegade is TRON and Dyson states that he was there and watched TRON perish.
We in the past the coup from Tron Legacy, Dyson was in the shadows and dispatched the troops of CLU against TRON. Tron fought them and then we scene jump to a badly injured TRON on the ground with CLU standing over him. CLU states the goal of the attack wasn't Flynn but to get TRON out of the way so that CLU can "perfect" the grid starting with killing all ISO's. Dyson then approaches CLU and TRON realizes he was betrayed, and CLU shows TRON that he healed and restored Dyson's face. (likely repurposing Dyson in the process) CLU then slashes TRON again and end of flashback.
In the present Beck returns to TRON's base and TRON is not pleased that he failed. Beck then asks if this is about the revolution or revenge. TRON tells Beck that this isn't his fight and walks away. Beck stops him and states he wont' let TRON kill for revenge, TRON then stuns Beck and removes his disc, reclaims the disc segment he gave Beck and reconnects it to his own disc segment. TRON clips the disc back on and his white armor rezzes back onto him and tells the unconscious Beck, "I didn't ask your permission!"
End of Part 1.
For part 2 we should expect TRON vs Beck and TRON vs Dyson. Will TRON be captured and turned into RINZLER due to this? We'll see. -
TRON UPRISING has returned as of last week with the episode:
Episode 8
"The Reward" October 19, 2012 Beck's night off with his friends is ruined when the Occupation arrests an innocent program falsely accused of being The Renegade. When Zed and Mara are also caught up in the melee, Beck has to make a daring rescue using a new four-seat "light roadster" that was offered as bounty for The Renegade's capture.
A relatively fun episode, we do learn in it that memories stored in an identity disc can be altered, if one knows how and has the time as it is a tricky process. We also learn that General Tessler is getting rather frantic and desperate to see the renegade brought down and derezzed. His lieutenants are still showing loyalty to him, but they also are waking up to how desperate he is and of course one them wants to see Tessler removed so that he can replace him. The other one, Paige, despite Tessler's claims of being his favorite soldier, etc etc, may also be waking up to the fact that she is wrong the side. Beck gains a new vehicle that could be nicknamed the Tron-mobile but in the end he splits it into two light cycles, one for his friends to escape on and he rides off on the other one. Perhaps he at least will have a distinctive new light cycle?
next episode: Part 1 of SCARS, an old friend that betrayed TRON named Dyson arrives in the city. This program betrayed TRON to CLU and is the one that apparently gave TRON his scars, or at least contributed to the damage done to TRON. TRON learns of Dyson's arrival and is consumed with the desire for revenge to the point where Beck will try to stop him. Expect TRON vs. Beck and TRON vs. Dyson as we learn more of the past, and also the strong possibility that this is the story where TRON will be captured and corrupted into RINZLER.
Identity Discs: we now know they can be "edited" and that if separated from a disc for too long the program will lose its memories until their disc is returned OR if a different one is attached then they gain different memories/personality. TRON showing his face to an amnesiac Beck is what jolted Beck enough to aid TRON to get his disc back, just as Rinzler/TRON seeing Flynn after he lost his discs in battle with Sam jolted TRON's memories to return. -
Quote:Presuming that the animated series occurs after Serenity in which case Wash and Book won't be around.....unless they do flashbacks.Get the original cast to do the voice work and I'll call it shiny.
Of course there are plenty of stories they could set in Pre-Serenity movie time thus we get Wash and Book.
If this series were to happen I'd like to see some eps that tell us Shepard Book's past. Yes we had the one shot comic Shepard's Tale but there is more to tell I'm sure.
Post Serenity things I'd like to see:
1. The Operative: he's no longer loyal to the alliance thanks to Mal showing that broadcast. Would he stay within the alliance to sabotage them from within, or quit them and perhaps find religion or at least try to join up with Mal and the Serenity crew? Him trying to join up with the crew would make for some interesting stories as well as tensions given that it was his orders that killed Shepard Book. Zoe might also blame him for Wash dying even though that was the Reavers getting a surprise and lucky shot in.
2. Zoe: she lost her husband. She's always been loyal to Mal. Now however, Mal's incessant hatred of the alliance and wanting to tear down the alliance started a chain reaction of events that culminated in Wash dying. It was Mal's idea to go into Reaver space to Planet Miranda where they learned the truth, and it was Mal's idea to get the Reavers to chase them all the way back to the Alliance fleet, the battle of which led to Wash getting killed. (I still laugh as even the calm and professional Operative freaked out as the Reavers arrived on the scene....TARGET EVERYTHING SOMEBODY FIRE!!!!!!!!). So just how loyal is Zoe to Mal now? Would she harbor some hatred of him for Wash dying? -

Quote:My take is that Superman's creators started the whole legal attack process while they were still alive and the family is continuing the fight. Also aren't the trademark laws indicating that Superman's ownership by DC is due to expire and revert soon, which I think is at the core of the this fight. Does DC truly own Superman or do the estates still have a claim? My take on this: it sucks how Siegel and Shuster were treated by the industry during their lifetimes. A lot of creators got shafted even worse back in the day (Bill Finger still doesn't get any credit for co-creating Batman, after all). But at the same time, I like Superman belonging in the DC Universe, and the constant legal battles just leave a bad taste in my mouth. It feels too much like family moneygrubbing and entitlement long after the fact.
.
Still you are correct, many creators then and now have gotten the shaft to put it nicely.
Bill Finger
Jack Kirby: I was bummed when I read that Marvel won the case as I tend to root for the underdog and would like to see legends such as Jack and their estates get their rightful credit and coin. Also every Marvel movie that has characters that Jack helped create should have either a portrait of Jack on a wall or a statue of Jack in the movie, IMO.
Jim Starlin: he was listed in the Avengers movie credits which was good, but THANOS showing up in the movie seems to have irritated him and he is filing claims with Marvel that he made THANOS before he started with Marvel and thus is entitled to a slice of the money pie. I am not sure of the status of his claims against Marvel about this.
The creator of the GHOST RIDER (Johnny Blaze version, not the old cowboy one from 50's and 60's) is currently appealing a losing verdict as I recall.
As to Superman staying at DC, I think he would even if the rights reverted back to the creator's estates. Sure there may be some sour grapes and bad feelings between the two parties as one would expect, but I suspect that DC would be very eager to keep Superman given that he is one of their big 3 characters and that losing him would mean a rather monumental shakeup to the DC Universe. They would need another Crisis/Zero Hour type event to erase Superman and all things connected to him from their universe:
1. Superman
2. Kal-el
3. Krypton/Kryptonite
4. Jor-el, Lara, Zod and any other Krytponians
5. Supergirl and Superboy
6. Krypto
7. Daily Planet and all its characters
8. LUTHOR
9. The "S" shield
10. Fortress of Solitude
11. The monster DOOMSDAY
and who knows what else I'm forgetting. Picture all that going away if the creator estates win and decide to not strike a bargain with DC, that would really shake up DC and probably the industry as a whole. Then would come the question: who would get Superman? IDW, Dynamite, Marvel, Dark Horse?
SHAZAM/Captain Marvel would have to replace Superman if DC lost him. -

Quote:Season 1 of 90's Iron Man and F.F. were indeed bad. Changing studios though did give us an improvement in Season 2 but the damage from Season 1 was too great. Also what was up with that awful theme music they used for season 1? Season 2 had the far better song for Iron Man.I'm a little shocked that the old Iron Man series (Dubbed "Dire Man" by a friend of mine awhile back when one of the Disney spin-off channels was re-running it, reminding us all just how awful it really was-), didn't make the list.
As one of the half dozen people on Earth who actually remembers Force Works and has some affection for that run, Iron Man's first season was just... painful. The second in no way improved it. o_0 -
http://robot6.comicbookresources.com...-legal-battle/
The fight continues, but the odds just tilted considerably back into DC's favor with this verdict.
Appeal pending of course.
Truly this lawsuit can be described as "The never ending battle....." -
