Quote:You are totally correct! Though I have read a bunch of your posts in this section and found them helpful...so that's almost guide-like!Oh, I have a guide?
Has someone assembled my scattered bits of poetry and prose into one volume? (And if they have, does it include a story about a little bird that forgot to fly south for winter? (Kheld Friday reference...http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...267757&page=18))
At anyrate, I suspect you are referring to AlienOne's guide...

In other news, I've gotten my shade into the 20s and respecced after getting dwarf. I find that I can pretty handily swap to dwarf when i need to tank something I've pulled agro on or just heal myself from taking random damage. Since I use it with some regularity, I've slotted some dwarf attacks (they are already muling kinetics) but I have also slotted my human attacks (in lieu of defensive powers). I find, however, that i just feel like i don't do much damage. I love orbiting death, but the long animation means I dont generally put it back up if I've had to swap to dwarf mid fight. Is feeling damage-weak at these levels normal? Hopefully it feels better at 50? I am really loving the look of the warshade attacks and such so sticking with it, I just kind of feel bad for the groups that get stuck with me so far :P -
Thanks all, Dechs and Stone, I have read both of your guides (as well as AIB's).
Follow-up question - is perma-Eclipse still the way to go for iTrials? I'd assume so, but is it still worth getting the various shields? I ask because there are plenty of situations where there aren't 5+ things in range to hit with Eclipse and such. In those case (fighting just AVs) is it worth it to run shields and such to bring up resists or just truck along with a one target Eclipse? -
This is definitely an AT forum I thought I'd never be posting in! I play pretty much redside only so have skipped over Kheldians but I like the idea of playing a Nictus (in concept) and figure I can betray to red once I hit 20. I also like the idea of a ranged character with great defenses so found my way here.
That said, how would a human form shade hold up in iTrials? I've read the guides here and was drawn to the idea of being able to have high resists and use things like inky aspect to help solo doors and bunkers. The problem is that I hate nova form with a passion - graphically and for the fact that I can't even use pool-based defenses. I could potentially take dwarf to get another mire, but is the overall idea viable? My iTrial experience so far comes from an ill/rad controller and while I love debuffs and being able to solo all of the DA arcs as a fresh 50 without NPC help due to the savage utility of perma PA, I was looking for a character with a bit more oomph. I thought about a crab, but pets seem to get annihilated in iTrials (except PA obviously) so that and my like of the Nictus concept made me come here.
As stated, the goal of this character would be almost entirely end game iTrial or SF focused. Could I take on the crates, bunkers, etc. as a human shade (preferably without shadow cloak as I like seeing costumes) or am I tossing away so much of the AT that I'd be better off Footstomping my way to victory? -
Quote:Did you find that the relatively low resists were fine on their own, or is it that there were plenty of +res buffs being tossed around to make up for it? Same question to the SR people really. Defense sets scared me because it seemed way easier to use IOs/pool power to fill defensive holes in resist sets rather than vice versa, but it's good to hear that the primarily defensive sets are still holding up to the content!SHIELD is your answer!
I love my Shield Tank, he Tanked all the I-Trials as they came out and I was never disappointed.
Shield has a great mix of Defense and Resistance, Tough and Weave complement it perfectly.
You can cap out your Defense and have over 50% resistances.
And Shield Charge Rocks! -
Hello tankers!
Since my recent return to the game, I've semi settled on an ill/rad controller with which I'm having a blasty blast. Having enjoyed that though, I also wanted to make a melee and tankers seem not only the most useful, but also relatively smallest in population so I decided on that AT. My question is about what power set(s) to choose if the intention is tanking current and future iTrials eventually.
I've read the guides and think I've got a fairly good understanding of the sets themselves and what their strengths and weaknesses are, my question is more practical in nature. I know, for example, that inv is a great set, but the idea of blowing up instantly when faced with psi damage made me uncomfortable. At the moment I think ela looks like where I'm leaning, but how bad is having no ddr? I know people post a lot about that as a failure theoretically, but how is it in practice? Assuming you cap at least s/l/e resistance and softcap (or close) s/l/e/n defense, do you often find the lack of ddr to cause defense failure and if so, do you find it makes you not survivable enough overall?
I'll admit, I've mostly been considering resistance sets instead of defensive ones as they seem the most survivable overall, but if I'm wrong let me know!
Side note: For secondaries I kind of dislike weapon sets due to finding redraw annoying. If needed i could roll one, but have been trying to conceptualize builds without parry, defensive sweep, etc.
Thanks in advance! -
Thanks for all of the input!
Due to the quickness of Death From Below and the large number of Experienced temp powers I have sitting around, I was able to give a few things a try. Started with the Fortunata and for whatever reason it just didn't "click" for me. I think, in part, that I wasn't a big fan of the widow claws and mixing weapon attacks with the mental ones. Having redraw within my own primary was kind of meh and I felt really gimped just taking the non-weapon powers (specifically missing dart burst and follow up felt painful). I did really like having controls to solo with though and that part of it was quite fun.
Second, I dusted off an old arachnos soldier, got him over the tiny hump to 24, and went crab. So far, enjoying that more than the Fort, but missing the lack of control. It is a ton of fun crouching and spraying packs with laser fire and arm-fired grenades though. Even if this doesn't end up my favorite, I think I'm definitely enjoying it.
Honorable mentions (but not played high enough to really sink my teeth into) go to Sonic Attack on a Defender. The suggestions about Corrs/Defenders made me look through them and even at the low levels, screaming at stuff and debuffing its resistance felt awesome. I went with Defender for that because the -Res was higher and it just felt "right". Now I just need to pick a primary I like and that may be the favorite... Also made an Ill/Rad Controller given the comments about Controllers and the things I liked about a Fort. That is pretty darn awesome so far. Other than having to fight Arachnos robots, confusing and blinding stuff solo is tons of fun and I was really, really enjoying debuffing stuff. While I enjoyed buffing on the Fort, the rad debuffs definitely felt like they had more oomph and I noticed a much bigger shift in the performance of a team.
Regarding the concept thing, I actually do like to RP in this game. That said, I am someone that has to like the play experience first and THEN find an interesting concept to work with a play experience I enjoy. I can probably come up with a good story for any combination though, especially given the amount of time I blow tweaking the costume and the look of every individual power. So yeah, totally get into the concept, but the play experience has to be worth it or I'll just stick a similar concept onto a better play experience =P
Thanks again and feel free to offer more suggestions. So far they've definitely guided me to a way more awesome time in CoX. -
I keep coming back to CoX after long absences and, as usual, am currently struggling to choose a character to play. I'm going to just go into a list of things without real order that I'd love to see from the choice and hopefully spark some feedback. I'll note that kheldians are pretty much the only ATs that I'm not interested in (primarily because I significantly prefer redside).
- I prefer to group when possible and intend to spend as much time as possible once I finally hit 50 doing things like ITrials
- When grouping I like to feel as though I'm contributing something other than just more damage numbers. This can be tanking, control, debuff, buff, really anything other than just smashing the other guy (which has so far kept me away from blasters)
- In practice, while leveling, I do a lot of soloing so something that is at least tolerable solo would be great. I prefer safe or interesting (control, debuffs, etc.) soloing to fast soloing though so I doubt this will be an issue
- I have basically no funding for enhancements. I'm happy to work my way up to a high end kind of build so would love something that performs well in that area, but I'm going to have to start small and work towards it so I'm hoping for something that isn't terrible on a low budget and only gets better as more inf is added
Thanks in advance, the forums here are usually quite awesomely helpful -
Your claim was that the current system works fine. I didn't feel the need to add a +1 to the comment that it in no way resembles realism (i.e. your assertion that drawing weapons from nowhere is somehow better than them just appearing from nowhere). I did feel the need to add, however, that I think it is further a problem because it artificially reduces your options for performance and adds QOL issues that have no real need to be added. And I don't think QOL has anything to do with min/maxing.
My point is that the current system does nothing at all to mimic "realism" so why add QOL and DPS complications if there isn't even a relative benefit for realism? And I really don't accept that someone's "concept" requires that they frequently draw weapons from nowhere instead of having those weapons from nowhere materialize in their hands. -
Quote:I'm not sure how this is an attempt to refute my claim. I'm not suggesting that weapon sets have poor DPS (and I apologize if it came across that way) I'm just pointing out, as you say right here, that you have to pick certain secondaries/avoid certain pool powers in order to maintain your maximum DPS. And it isn't due to certain secondaries or pool powers offering subpar DPS options, it is simply that they will force a redraw which, in and of itself, lowers your DPS. My issue isn't with overall DPS of weapon sets, it is with the fact that all redraw does, in practice, is present artificially lowered DPS when you select certain secondaries/pool powers. Saying you can avoid redraw by making certain selections (or avoiding certain selections) simply proves the point, it doesn't refute it.Now, with most melee characters, you don't suffer from redraw as much, and weapons sets are giving an acc bonus to make up for having redraw, even if you manage a powerset combination that has next to zero redraw (like for example, a katana/willpower, without hasten. Just toggle, and go, no clicks, no redraw, just slashing, and you still get the .05x acc bonus)
-
I find this assertion a bit absurd. As far as I can tell all the current system does is artificially reduce the DPS of weapon based sets when choosing certain secondaries/pool powers therefore reducing the number of viable choices. And then there is the QOL issue of having to repeatedly deal with the annoying sound and animation aside from the decrease in DPS. Personally while I'm liking being back to this game, I dislike the fact that any weapon based set is basically off limits from my perspective based solely on the redraw issue.

Quote:I don't have stranglers yet and spore (at least) is definitely not that useful unless I need an emergency button. I do use it to sleep a group and run away if I need it, but it hasn't helped a lot on an average pull. I think my biggest issue is that often things are +1 and it seems like seeds misses a fair amount on them. If that happens and strangler also misses, I'm running or dead. And if seeds misses multiples, it is very sad for me =/ Maybe I'm not putting enough slots into my assault powers instead of the control ones to dish out damage fast enough?Low level plant/fire?
Either spore burst or seeds of confusion the whole spawn. Then strangler the most dangerous enemy type in the spawn. Then kill stuff with assault powers.
You have enough control that you really shouldn't be running into problems with normal spawn sizes of 2-3. -
Quote:I'd be willing to slot whatever, but as I have no lvl 50 to farm up cash, even relatively cheap is...pretty expensive as far as I've seen.I forgot to ask, are you willing to slot sets early on?
Because there are some dirt cheap early sets that help a fair bit. And once you hit 27 you can slot the chance to hold into EVERYTHING. And that is a game changer. -
I typically use seeds when it is up (which is for most spawns). I seem to run into problems when the confuse effect wears off or especially if and when it misses (and I have been slotting the power for accuracy). Maybe it's that things vary in level, but I don't think I'm getting the full 21s confuse all of the time. Generally a single Lt. that gets free of holds/confuses or a pair of minions seems to be enough to do some serious hurt and while I'm not actually dying, I figure if I'm eating inspirations now things might get even touchier as I level.
Edit: Also, it would be nice to be able to kill more than one spawn a minute, though I recognize that that may be outside of the bounds of low level ability. -
So, after the various suggestions here I ended up rolling a Dominator. Given that I solo a lot due to playing at odd times surviving is relevant to me and I have found so far that I have issues with it. Assuming I pause a bit between fights I can usually kill things, but anytime I have more than one Lt. or even sometimes a pack of minions that are yellow, I seem to have great difficulties.
What suggestions are there for increasing survivability at low levels? Power choices, slotting, etc. are all fine options. I'm currently playing Plant/Fire but as I'm sure the character will be lower level for a while (since I haven't leveled to 50 before I'm interested in the dev-made mission arcs more than AE) I'm perfectly fine changing sets to have a better leveling experience. -
The updates have brought me back in force and back when I played previously I had a moderately high level brute. With all ATs open to all sides I'm now more seriously looking at scrappers as well. Is there a good guideline of what sets (or combination thereof) that are "better" on a scrapper vs. those that are "better" on a brute? I know, for example, that +dam is better, generally, on a scrapper.
Thanks. -
I appreciate the responses. I'm not surprised that the concerns over being useless in "boss fights" were overblown, but it's always nice to hear how and why. That said, is there a particular primary that finds greater use with things like incarnate trials in mind or does it just follow the normal rules of primaries (like earth/plant being more effective and gravity and such being completely useless)?
-
Quote:Are you saying then that controls are useful vs. the big bads in things like incarnate trials? I'm certainly aware that dominators do damage, but it seems like if all you need on the big bads is damage then (at least in those fights alone) you are better off bringing a scrapper/blaster/brute/whatever. I'm just wondering if there is a dominator primary that is useful in those fights.Hello and welcome to the journey of the Dominator.. IMHO one of the most rewarding AT's in the game.
Dominators in general excel at two things. Control and Damage. Unlike their cousin the Controller, Dominators do not focus on support. The Dominator playstyle I tend to describe as Lock em Down.. Knock em Down.... Control them and then take them out. Dominators when domination is active excel at control and they in general do more damage that Controllers.. You can always use control and you will ALWAYS need damage. -
Hey,
As someone that hasn't gotten that far, I was wondering what, if any, dominator primaries are useful in things like incarnate trials. With all of the comments about resistances and such, it seems as though the support and control aren't really effective in such things. Is that overblown? If not, do soft controls work (like Ice)? What about endurance drains from Elec? -
Thanks for all the advice. I tried a few combinations of the suggestions and settled on Sonic/Dark for now. Only level 10 so far, but I'm quite enjoying it compared to previous endeavors. End is a little touchy at times, but with Darknest Night even at such a low level I don't feel like I'm dying constantly. Getting used to finding and anchor that won't just die in teams will be something I need to get used to, but all in all it is fun times.
-
First off let me try to give enough information to make any responses helpful =P I play CoX on and off at times when I need a break from other things and to just have fun. That means my play is pretty casual and will likely stay that way. Some of my primary enjoyment comes from what I think are great story arcs (I particularly enjoyed some of CoV and am really loving GR) and some of the very well written AE missions.
I exclusively PvE and tend to play either in short bursts or at odd hours. While I enjoy grouping and try to when I can, my play habits mean that I am often solo. I normally play brutes (and now scrappers with GR) because the survivability helps me solo and it is easy to take the same thing into a group and help out reasonably well. I really would like to find a corruptor that I enjoy because a) I want something ranged and b) I often enjoy playing support characters.
I have done some research here and sadly the common suggestion just doesn't do it for me; for some reason I have tried Fire/* and I just really can't get into Fire as a primary. I don't necessarily need something that is going to be the end all be all at max level and some incredible powerhouse (I may never even get that far =P) but I feel like most times when I start a corruptor I feel constantly in danger of dying, not terribly effective, and usually give up by level 20. I'm pretty sure the problem is with me and not the AT, so in an attempt to really sink my teeth into corruptor-ing I'm here to ask advice!
