Those of you with ATi cards, has anything made it into this patch to address the crashing and horrible FPS with drivers newer than 10.9?
-
The only solutions that work consistently are to downgrade to the 10.9 drivers, or to turn ALL settings (except AA and AF, they don't seem to matter) to the lowest.
-
My frustration level with this is hitting my hardpoint.
New update for game? No fix.
New update for drivers? No fix.
Do either of these companies give a damn about users? -
Quote:The two versions are referring to two different things. The 10.9 version number is for the Catalyst Package, which includes the driver. As an example, I have had the most success with the 10.11 Catalyst package, but the driver version is 8.79.6 (do NOT use the 10.11 drivers if you can use the 10.9s - my card is too new for the 10.9s to recognize, so i am SOL).Catalyst, the ATI drivers program, keeps telling me my drivers are up to date but it's stuck at version 8.77 when I've downloaded v. 10.9 to install.
The 10.9 package should have the 8.77 drivers in it. -
Quote:Well I tried a few more things (un-installing drivers/CCC and re-installing/etc...diff. ways of doing it) and still have issues as far as frame rate/crashing goes (at least for one of my toons (Magmificent)).
I have turned on manual fan control in the CCC and turned it to 75% instead of the 40-50% or whatever it was at before.
There is an "Auto-Tune" button in the CCC ATI Overdrive section and when I clicked on it, it hung (didn't finish)...I was able to do other things (open programs/etc) but the Auto-Tune program/test just hangs....
The auto-tune can take a very long time. Starting it and walking away for 10 minutes is recommended. Just stay close enough to smell the ozone if something goes hinky.

There are several threads that deal with low FPS and crash problems with any driver after 10.9. You are in the same boat as I am. I have a 6970, and since no drivers before the 10.11 drivers can even see the card, we just have to live with the issues until it gets fixed.
Recap from the other threads:
delete the checksum file in your CoH directory.
go to your cmd and type ipconfig /flushdns
start game
This works only once in awhile for me with the FPS drop. I have learned to play with all the settings low or off except AA/AF. Another thing I personally noticed was that when I turn off shadows, half the time I get my FPS back. -

I haven't played coh in probably 2 months. I get my forum fix from my phone. I appreciate ur response but I don't follow. Should I go intel or amd?
please advise.
The way it lines up:
Intel = fastest chips
AMD = best bang for the buck
You really can't go wrong with either company. Both produce awesome chips. Intel edges AMD on speed, but you pay a premium for those extra FPS. -

Hell, the sections of the forums that matter, they were laughed off even when Alienware built their own machines. [H] is an enthusiast, DIY site. Numbers mean something, the case and "red lights" do not.Don't buy an Alienware PC. Contrary to the [H]ardOCP crowd's most fervent beliefs, red lights and black plastic do not in fact make your games run faster, and futureproofing is a fool's endeavour when purchasing a PC. Spend a thousand bucks or so tops on parts from a reputable online shop, buy your most computer savvy friend a case of beer, and have her assemble your new box o' stuff into a great rig. Then use the other thousand bucks for upgrades later on.
Otherwise, I agree. Buy the parts and roll your own.

The lava pit is a nightmare for a bot MM. Breezed through this with no issues on any other toon, support or not. Had to get my wife's brute to taunt him out of the lava with my MM. After 10 minutes of a stalemate thanks to my bots killing themselves in purifying fire...
Also, seriously, why the hell does a ranged henchmen insist on running up to the enemy and swatting him? WHY?
Anyway, I was surprised at how many people were having difficulty defeating him until i ran into this very situational problem. -
I don't normally have that checked, but at this point I think you should be willing to try ANYTHING lol. It can't hurt when you can't play because of crashes. Give it a try and let us know if it gives you some more stability.

It is almost like every person with the issue needs a totally different solution.

Quote:Heh, I have an HD 5800 ATI card....having horrible frame rate issues...especially earlier today. I did the Vincent Ross arc and when you fight the 200 or so Legacy Chain mobs....I was doing a 'slideshow' (1 fps or less)...sooo annoying...
Going to have to un-install drivers and try an older version or something...grr...what did i19 do to us?hehe
Just did an ITF. Crashed once, nothing happening on the screen. Disabling Catalyst AI and dropping shadows to NONE made for a lag free experience.
The AI being forced on for the new cards is part of the issue, but there is definitely something going on with shadows with the 10.1x drivers. Everything else is maxed out completely, but I hit shadows at any setting other than none and I drop to less than 20fps.
Okay, for those with the newer cards, here's how to disabled the Catalyst AI manually:
Create a profile (i'll explain that if you need it)
Leave everything at default settings for that profile.
Close CCC.
In Windows Explorer, navigate to your C:\Users\username\Appdata\Local\ATi\ACE\Profiles directory - you must have hidden files visible.
You should see your newly created profile listed there as profilename.xml
Right click and EDIT that file.
Look for this line:
Code:<Feature name="CatalystAI"> <Property name="CatalystAI" value="Enable" /> </Feature>
Code:<Feature name="CatalystAI"> <Property name="CatalystAI" value="Disable" /> </Feature>
Right click on your CCC icon in your tray. Choose "Invoke Preset." Select your newly created profile.
After this, delete your checksum and flush your DNS according to Renn's instructions.
As I said, dropping Shadows to disabled seems to make the most impact on performance in the game. -
Quote:Heh, the worst part is I can't go any further back than the 10.11's. Anything before that can't see my card. Drives me nuts that my wife's 5770 performs so much better than my 6970. She gets to run the good drivers.I see, guess I should've asked which card you were using instead of drivers. Didn't even know they stopped using a disable option. The whole reason ATI put in the ability to disable the AI was because users wanted it in the first place. Guess I won't be going above the 5xxx series of cards until they put it back in, or I'll just have to go to nVidia when I'm ready to upgrade. Well now that that's squared away that's the most I can help with, hopefully someone else using the 6xxx series of cards knows how to fix the lag issue. Good luck getting your issue fixed.
For now, I guess I'll just play at minimal settings when doing TFs. At least you helped with the crashing. Never would have thought deleting a checksum would possibly in any way affect video stability. Something definitely wrong there. -
Also, as a reminder, I went back to the 10.11 drivers. The forums posts I have seen say that the catalyst AI disable option came with the 10.10d hotfix, and seems to be specific to the 6xxx series.
-
I found the confusion. I have a 6970. The option does not exist for the 6xxx series. My son is running my old 4890. The option does exist for older cards.
Update:
Loaded my 4890 into my son's machine. The 10.12 drivers have Catalyst disable option on his machine.
This is from my machine with the 6970:

I'm sorry, but no. You'll have to trust me. I've been doing this stuff for 15 years. The new ATi CCC panels do not have a checkbox. The very fact that I know how to edit a profile's XML file should be enough. I have disabled Catalyst AI manually. I still had to turn all of my settings down to nothing on the STF I did last night for it to be playable.
If you need proof of ATi removing the disable checkbox, you'll just have to go to their forums - the first place I checked to see if this was normal. Plenty of threads about the new CCC and Catalyst AI not having the disable option in the GUI.
I'm not trying to be obstinate, but this thread has turned into for me:
"No check box"
"Are you sure?"
"Yep, no check box"
"Are you unfamiliar with checkboxes?"
"There's no check box"
"Maybe you aren't looking at the right checkbox"
"There is no checkbox"
"Can you take a screenie and prove that you are not an idiot?" -
-
I just rolled back to the 10.11 drivers that came on the disk for my card. Looks like the old CCC, but still no option to diable the Catalyst AI.
(uninstall ALL ATi software
reboot in safe mode, driver sweeper
reboot
install) -

Both AMD and Intel are switching sockets within the next year. AM3 is being moved aside for whatever socket the Bulldozer based chips run on. Altho there is some debate as to whether there will be AM3 compatible Bulldozers at first.
At this point, looking at future socket releases just isn't the way to deal with it. Buy what you can afford right now. If you start waiting for the next generation, you will wait forever...
The way things have panned out in the CPU area: Intel holds the speed crown, AMD holds the bang for buck crown. -
16x9 is a standard resolution for 19/20/21 monitors. 21 and 22 can be 16x9 or 16x10. 22 and higher can be 19x12 or more.
I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve with your resolution. In City of Heroes, higher rez just means more room on the screen, not necessarily better graphics. Even tho this is the case, your card is pushing a huge chunk more data to your monitor at 16x9 than at 12x7. A 7300LE is not serving you well.
At this point, you need to let folks know your price range, and what you expect from the system. In all honesty, your machine is dated, and there is a limit to how well just a new card will help you. Maybe someone else here with a better idea what an older machine can do can chime in and give you more hints as to a correct upgrade path. -
Can't seem to disable it in the new CCC... Can only set it to performance, quality, high quality...
That is annoying. Anyway, you can still disable it if you create a profile, then edit the xml file for that profile.
I'll try that next time I run something that seems to be hitting me with dropped frames. Deleting the checksum when I am laggy and restarting the game seems to fix things tho. -
Rennfield's solution worked for me, altho I didn't reboot or clear my dns cache. I have now played for two days without a single crash. Frame rate drops and lag are still bad at times, but livable.
I am running a 6970 with 10.12 drivers. -
Praetoria is grindy. I wouldn't mind the increased difficulty if the missions weren't 5 hours long, the rooms in most of the buildings weren't HUGE and full of enemies. This is boring. The higher difficulty actually *adds* to my issue. I have to slow down and take my time or I die constantly. Slowing down means the long missions are even longer and more boring. I don't understand why half the team is always asking if we can skip groups while the other half is constantly quitting because this is "just taking too long."
Praetoria is significantly more difficult. If I had faced it as my initial CoX experience, I would have left as soon as my free month was up.
As a (just short of) 5 year vet, I find Praetoria horrendously tedious and the increased difficulty is a main reason. I also don't underatand why a level 5 mission had me getting 8 ambushes. The number of ambushes and the frequency (overlapping) is insane and frustrating.
I have a corr, a brute, and a dom in praetoria at this point. I wanted to do all four arcs, but these are the last Praetorians I will make until the zone becomes FUN.
Also, Praetoria is significantly easier on ranged toons. Every single group seems to chain stun, chain KB, or chain hold. It is incredibly aggravating. Also, what the hell is up with 5 burn patches from minions in one group? My melee toon is definitely catching the worst of it. Having so much mez at levels well below when we can expect our anti-mez power is pure evil. There have been points where I have wanted to throttle my wife for making a fricken A/TA Corr and not a damn healer.
Sorry, that turned into a bit of a rant. Just feeling like I wasted my money on this expansion, even tho I know I didn't and side switching, 4 new powersets and all the costumes would have had me spend it anyway. Its just a shame that I won't ever be heading back to Praetoria until the higher level content opens - which from the difficulty, it seems it HAS :P .
Oh, also, thanks for toning down the Syndicate a little. My brute appreciates it. -
Quote:Please be sure to petition and bug this issue in game, as well. Has anyone PM'd Ocho and pointed him to these threads?I'm wondering how many of these threads we'll have to make to get a response? This is getting really frustrating for me as Liberty is my home server. I had plans for what I was going to do with the free character moves, deleting and re-creating some characters as Praetorians, and I can't do any of it right now because of this very odd (and seemingly server-specific) bug.
