Quote:To be brutally honest, I've /ignored, noted and /petitioned *far* more people in PVE for acting like that than I ever did in PVP. Yes, even when PVP was fairly active.Who said I was joking? Have you met some of the obnoxious {pancakes} that shoot their foul little mouths off in PvP zones? Those little creeps should be sterilized in the most painful way possible to keep them from reproducing.
So unless you want to do the same to all PVE players, let's try to avoid painting groups with such a broad brush, m'kay? -
Hmmmmm....
How much does having to deal with the UI limit (or not!) the sorts of things you can consider?
For instance, asking for the older patterns - some of which is fairly badly "pixelly" or "jaggy" - to be updated, given some "depth" and the like is a request that comes up fairly often, but there are some people who like/want the older ones just as they are (the painted look, I suppose.)
For instance, just going down the costume "sets" in the creator, female, Armored - ok, Average, ok, Bare - jaggy, angle-y top and bottom (worse on top,) Genie - you can see it along the bottom of the bandeau top, etc.
How can we get stuff like this on the schedule to be cleaned up? And is it a major pain to have two versions for the people (I think samuel_tow keeps chiming in on this one) to keep the jaggy, "painted" version? -
Thirty-seven mentioned an "Incursion" event in their PVP suggestion thread.
We've had people suggest doing various things with their characters as NPCs.
So, how about a completely voluntary system here: Volunteer your character to visit the other side.
The skinny:
1. It's completely voluntary. You don't HAVE to have your character do anything. If you do volunteer your character for the system (and you can volunteer multiples!) it gets placed in a pool.
2. You have to not be playing that character (thus the multiples) when the pool is checked. The pool is checked every half hour. Character can only be used once every 24 hours.
3. WHEN you volunteer the character, you get a choice of actions the character can take. If your character wouldn't set fire to a building, for instance, it doesn't take that action. You have a selection of (say) ten possible things you could do (save/rob a bank, protect/kidnap someone, etc.)
4. If your character is chosen, it gets put into a (level appropriate) zone event, somewhere between EB and AV status (depending on how many people are around.) Alert goes out, people face your character.
5. They get rewards if they defeat it. YOU get badge credit for being chosen. If defeated, there's no debt for you or anything (of course, since you weren't playing.) You get... something (not sure JUST what - reward merits, chance of random powerset-appropriate recipe roll, something.)
Just throwing it out there for the heck of it. -

Quote:See, the difference there is that it's a control - it's PBAOE Disorient, which I completely get (and use on my fire/storm, as well.) I don't even think it has a knockback component of its own (unless I'm completely misremembering.)I used to occasionally use hand clap on my fire/storm troller in conjunction with flashfire.
The ones I'm thinking of do nothing *but* knockback, which for melee (I can somewhat see it on a blaster, but even then...) may be problematic.
But what I'm seeing so far echoes a fair bit of what I say about things like Solar Flare on my PB. Using it for positioning.
I'm halfway wondering - even though we've only had a comment or two here - if it's seen as fine for that *because* it doesn't do damage, odd as that might sound. -
Quote:I was going for tarring, feathering and running out of the country in front of an angry mob that has pitchforks, torches and molotovs...To be honest, I was taking it that for the purposes of this thread that everyone quitting is an acceptable outcome.
But that works, too.
Also "for fun." -
Quote:And then you get married. And then your spouse *IS* your nemesis. Timed mission? Forget it. He/she/it isn't letting you out of the house before the honey-do list is clear - and it's a LONG list. If you DO get out, you get a call partway through the mission (immobilize, -def, -res) as he/she/it complains about how you leave them with everything, etc....
1.) Super {girl,boy,lobster}friends!
All the classic supers have them! Superman has Lois Lane, Spiderman has Mary Jane, Batman has Robin, and The Monarch has Dr. Girlfriend! So why can't we have this staple of comic culture? Well, now you can! You'll be able to start on 'dating' at around level 20 or so. There'll be various character you can start a relationship with, and they can be kidnapped/brainwashed/etc, and you'll have to go out and save them.
The exact path you go down should be randomized with a large number of branching possibilities. If they ever implement the Nemesis system (HAIL LORD NEMESIS! - er not that Nemesis!), the super significant-others will make great kidnap victims.
Participation will be optional... but, after level 20, each level you gain with being in good standing with a significant other, you'll be hit with more and more severe debuffs (-regen, -res, -def, -recharge, -damage, and -hp... irresistible).
Run something like the cape mission for a divorce. After which INF generation is cut down to 1/10. -
Quote:I am weird, but ED and the GDN stopped bothering me after IOs. Because I then saw the point. I like to think that they knew IOs were coming and that is why they did it. Who (but the devs) know if that is true or not.
You'll hear the occasional reference to the "SSOCS" (Super Secret Out of Combat Skills system.) It was *supposed* to be introduced around when we got universities put in game (issue 5.) And in some ways, supposedly, it'd do what IOs did - but apparently the way it was set up was decidedly "not fun." It never, to my knowledge, even got onto closed (non-internal-only) beta.
So, in a way, they did know - just not in the form they finally DID show up in issue 9. -

I'm actually surprised to get a positive response, and have it be the first one!

This morning, actually. (Not being a smartalec. I really did.)

Handclap (and, I believe, thunder clap, from elec melee/manipulation) - PBAOE knockback. No damage. Just a "Get away from me" power.
I like knockback in general - I think most complaints about it really fall into "it's being used improperly," and in most non-pet cases I'll argue for it.
But this little family of powers... I'm just curious. Does anyone actually use these? I know they're not just in brutes/tankers, as my first experience with it was on my Elec/Elec blaster back in issue 3. I think it was one of the reasons for my first respec, as well. (Or maybe it was my first time on test - but I'm fairly sure I had it on live.) I've never used it since. And thinking about it, I can't think of a time I've seen anyone *else* use it. (I don't mean NPCs... frigging Imperious....)
So, yeah, out of wild curiosity - does anyone use this regularly (for more than "hey, look, level 1 Hellions! Let's make them fly!") and how?
(Yes, this is one power - well, two or three in total - I'd be *perfectly* happy turning from pure radial knockback into knockdown with stun and, oh, a bit of -res or damage.) -
Quote:Let me give you two examples - both because of ED.I will never understand the idea of nerfing, or how it creates more fun.
1. Pre-ED, the game was turning into "The tank herds the room/map/zone, a blaster nukes, we move on." That, as much as some people long for those days, would have killed the game long before now. I know it was boring me to tears. And I was one of the blasters nuking 500 enemies at once.
2. Without the ED/GDN nerfs, there's *no* way we'd have the Invention system we have now. I may not like some of the power creep we've gotten from it (softcapped blasters?) but I *do* like some of the added bonuses we've gotten - like my ranged attacks having a chance to hold, or non damaging powers now able to do damage thanks to procs.
There's basically a danger of either everything becoming too easy (imagine all Dom powers being at pre-nerf, pre-Domination 2.0 Psychic Shockwave levels) or having to ratchet up the difficulty to the point where nobody wants to make new characters because it's too tough, leaving the opening zones dead.
Quote:All GMs would have an attack that do enough KB to knock someone to the other side of whatever zone they are in. -
Apparently it was tested and had *issues* at some point. *shrug*
I don't really get it for *this* game, to be honest. I think the biggest thing is that you lose a few things as you transfer servers (prestige totals, because some people actually seem to care about those, and server friends lists come to mind,) and there's a little bit of hassle as you have to re-join your supergroup when you transfer back.
There is the cost for transfer, as well. Plus some people just want to play "one" character and don't like the thought of rolling a fresh one and re-leveling/re-enhancing it (which, again, isnt' something *I* get - you enjoyed it the first time, supposedly - but it is an issue for some folks, so there it is.) -

Part of me is just waiting for her response - though some of it I know is stuff she's said elsewhere, as I think she's made this very comment in various threads.
Part of me knows I'll skip it and find something easy like an in-depth discussion of 'brane theory and multiverses to read instead. -
Thanks for a good, civil start - and yeah, I already see one "Yep, I'd hate you for that" from me.
(SAAAAAMMMMMM!)

Here's part of the problem, which you touched on early in the post.
PVP wasn't really "tacked on." I see that comment, like they were told ten minutes before launch by NCsoft that "Hey, you guys have to add PVP." You'll find a few things in the dev diaries - like when Dakan was still in - that they had been thinking of PVP early on.
However, the ideas changed. (I'm fairly sure it was Rick dakan, actually, who said "in arenas" and called "a city of heroes vs a city of villains a silly idea.") That itself isnt' the problem, as arenas *can* coexist with warring factions (see Aion.)
The problem is that it *launched* without it. It didn't launch as a PVP-enabled game - and I don't mean "including world PVP" by that, I mean it launched with no PVP. We didn't have anything until Issue 4 - and then it launched with no real REASON to PVP and what was (and, frankly, is) a fairly unfriendly interface. I remember wanting to try it with friends and having matches just fail to create for no discernible reason. Plus, really, many people saw no reason hero would want to fight hero - and the variety of powersets and ATs made balance difficult... even before COV.
Issue 6 changed some of that. New ATs, and a *reason* people could grasp to fight. After all, heroes and villains always fight! Jump right in!
Not going to get into some attitudes about it. But to me, it was fun. And it was accessible.
Now, however... well, as much as I *hate* to admit it, I think you may be right about just calling the whole thing a bad idea. PVP was accessible before - you had to learn what you were doign and how to counter things (Stalker? Pop a yellow. or, hell, if the zone has it, *stand in water.* I surprised a few stalkers that way, knowing where they were by watching the ripples.) Everyone could get an SO build going. And teaming did take care of your weaknesses pretty much.
Now, there's a HIGH cost to really enter, with PVP/purple/etc IO builds. And the learning curve THERE is high enough without the big powers change when you step into a zone.
The solution of "All PVP via the arena" - adding an option, by the way, for the Team Up Teleporter, as I seem to recall seeing asked elsewhere - would probably work out. Though the rewards in the zones *now* would have to be reduced or eliminated. The nukes and shivans are as strong as they are now, after all, because they're supposed to have the risk of PVP involved. -
-
I didn't find COH because of an ad. I found it because it was on sale at Wal-Mart and I felt like playing it.
I remember comic book ads for it. I don't recall seeing them anywhere but in the COH comics.
COV, I saw a poster or two for in some shops.
Other than those and (recent, by comparison) MMO/gaming site coverage, I can't think of seeing much advertising. -
what would you do that people would *hate* you for? No, wait, let me format that properly to give it the emphasis due. Not that people would hate you for, but that people would
HATE, BURNING HATE
you for.
Yeah, I've got a few. Just a discussion elsewhere got me thinking of this.
Going to make a request or two first, though. Specifically, this *can* get ugly. I'm going to ask posters (and readers) not to make it so - just respect your fellow poster. If you really hate an idea (after all, look at the point of the thread!) - just leave it as "Yeah, you're right, I'd *hate* that." No attacks, please. (These aren't suggestions or requests, after all. Just a screw-around thread. Have some flame-free fun with it.)
All right. So, what would you hate me for if ol' MB were a dev?
1. Your enhancements turn on you.
This was kind of an off comment by a dev, I believe, way back when Hami-o builds were the top of the line. (It was a comment somewhere, at least. It may have been a description.) Basically, "Sure, load up your builds with hammi-Os. If you want to take that risk. You never know what might happen..."
At the time, it may actually just have referred to the SSOCS (skill system that was later scrapped and much later turned into Inventions.) But it tickled something in me - imagine a Hamidon encounter (remember, hammis at the time) where the Hamidon could - thanks to your "enhancing" with what are essentially bits of him - alter, redirect or disable your powers.
I *love* the pure evil of this idea. I don't know how it would be done NOW, honestly, but it's definitely the sort of thing I'd do. ( Edit: Might be a nice way to top off the Incarnate system - You have to fight the Well, the Well fights back with your own, freshly gained powers. ) Of course, "everyone" uses Inventions now. So....
2. Disable set bonuses.
Not permanently, no. Even I'm not that evil. But for a mission or arc, or even on an on-again, off-again way (and I am nice enough I'd give SOME warning - better read your misison text and mob descriptions!) all those set bonuses *go away.*
Perhaps even as part of the end of a task force. Yes, you have to fight the big bad. But he's managed to gut all the work you've done with his devices. So fight off waves of minions as you go to disable the devices (and he chases you.) Get all of them disabled and the bonuses come back. If they come back in stages, there'd be six to eight of them to disable.
And I'd be laughing maniacally (and enjoying my still-full-strength SO builds.)
3. Badges you get *one* shot at.
Again, plenty of warning on it - but having some that would be *one* shot only. No ouroboros. (Or there's an altered version for ouro. Say, "Victor" if you beat whatever for real, "Shadow of the victor" if you need to ouro it.)
4. Exclusive badges and contacts.
Somewhat like the patron badges, but expanded (or they were. Not sure how they are now.) Basically, let the badges help "tell" your story. If you make certain decisions, you get awarded X badge and go on to work with contact X. If you make a different one, you get Y badge and can work with contact Y. You can still do contact X's mission if you're teamed with someone doign that, sure - but it won't affect YOUR chain or badges.
5. Badge ranks.
Really not *trying* to pick on the badgers here, I promise! This really goes more toward the idea of "the badge tells your story" again.
I'm thinking of things like the "Prevent 30 Fir Bolg from escaping" mission. You'd probably *really* want to solo these things.... End of the mission, you get a different badge depending on how well you did. (And redoing it won't get you a better - or worse - "rank.") Drop the mission? You get the "wimp" badge. (Yes, you are allowed to drop it. Yes, you're told there's a ranked badge.) And it goes all the way up to "No escapes and time on the clock" (or whatever's appropriate for the mission.) And again - even if you rerun it, you're stuck with whatever your first run (or drop) was.
6. There'll be a quiz.
Yeah. For those who like speeding through and ignoring text, there'll be SOME bit of information (of multiple possibilities) you need to know for the "best" (quickest/xp bonus/special salvage drop or something) finish. And it won't be the same each time.
7. You REALLY don't want to AOE....
We have a *little* of this in game now with Nemesis. And I've mentioned the idea before, as have others.
Basically, the way the game is *now,* those that want to "play for efficiency" end up getting stuff together and AOEing the heck out of it. No real thought needed, it's just steamrolled carnage, rinse, repeat.
For me, that was boring back when tanks were herding zones and maps. So... If you've ever poked through Magic: the Gathering, there were critters there known as "Slivers." Whenever you had two or more slivers, they'd start sharing abilities among *all* slivers. Sometimes it was more life. Sometimes they'd hit harder. Or they'd gain some new ability. Getting a few together could make life miserable...
So, new group or two with the same idea. you WANT to take them down alone or in small groups. Some of the abilities are toggles, so control can take them down. Some of them are just always-on, so you want to separate and kill. Try to gather and AOE them (especially for the "I HAVE to run at x8/+4" folks) will make things... *difficult* would be an understatement. (I'm not evil enough to make certain ATs completely pointless, though.) You'll want either lower settings or things like snipes, cages and control. (So this would be a high level group, yes.)
8. Origin story arcs.
Chain of 1-50 story arcs. Unlike epic ATs, though, they can't make much assumption about "why you are what you are" - your story is your own. This is less about WHY your origin is X and more "Why someone else is interested."
For instance, take Natural. You could be a human with superb training. You could be an alien from a race that farts fire. It doesn't matter - someone's interested in capturing and possibly cloning you - and once you beat them, you have to uncover their backers before THEY try getting ahold of you and either cloning or eliminating you.
Or magic, for instance. It can be inborn, it can be spell knowledge, it can be an artifact. It can be whatever you want. But, we have groups in game who are interested in seeing what makes it tick - or the mage-killers who just want to eliminate magic (not just some of the Rikti.) You have run-ins with these guys from 1-50.
Or they want to steal your tech, or duplicate (or reverse) your experiment, or cut you open and see what your mutation is and what they can do about it. It doesn't force anything about you or your bio - it's 100% the fact that it has interested one or more outside groups.
The groups would have to scale so you can go back and play the arcs even on an 8 year old level 50.
Edit: Just thought of one, kind of inspired by some other comments.
9. Revisit the set bonus rule of 5.
How? Instead of "Five of any one bonus and percent," it would be "Five of any bonus, either five of the lowest or one of each percent."
Let me illustrate:
We have a set that has, say, "Increased debt protection" (because EVERYONE builds for that!) at .0625, 1, 1.5, 2, and 3%, with a purple set giving 5%. You have five "slots" for it.
You could end up with five of .0625%. If you get one that's higher, it replaces one - so you have one 1% and four .0625% ones. At most, though, you could have four 1% bonuses. Get another at one percent, and you have two 1%, three .0625%. You CANNOT, however, have five 3% bonuses! At most, you could have one 3%, one 2%, one 1.5%, one 1%, and one .0625% (If we had one more - say a 2.5% bonus - you could drop the lowest .0625 and have a 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3% - but only one of each.)
Yeah, it makes things a little more complex, I know. And it drops those caps - not 5 3%, 5 2%, etc, etc, etc. -
You get that next issue, by the way.
Quote:Bill already asked this at the start of the thread and it is time for people to respect this now.
It would be a major change I'd likely dislike - but I don't think I agree with you that it's the same as "Gut them and start over."
Then again, I'd fully admit I'd be a royal ******* as a dev (which is one of many reasons it's good I'm not) - I'd find a way to make a -KB IO, then introduce a nice, fun and rewarding set of arcs that require you to be able to do knockback.
Quote:1. Merge: Quantum Flight and Quantum Acceleration
Quantum Flight's power description mentions Flight Speed twice.
The resulting power... hmmm. Might be seen as overpowered. Basically starting as QFly and blending into QA - 30 seconds of top speed flight with instant phase, blending into an "ony affecting self" high defense flight speed boost. It potentially would have to not disable combat or energy flight, though, which Qfly - at least from memory - does now, being a travel power.
Kind of curious now - does anyone have slotting or gameplay this would affect? I'd pretty much treat it just like I treat Qfly now - pretty much taking it as is.
Quote:Originally Posted by JibakoYou can't really "stack" knock backs anyway. -
Actually, the biggest "fail" with this IMHO is that, once more, the mobs don't scale correctly. Go ahead and try to face anything with something under level 20. Worse yet, under 10. Invasions popped up twice while I was running some lowbies around.
That nemesis gas? Instant kill (two ticks of 54+ damage... to a character with 100 or so hit points.)
Or how about just trying to attack them? I might as well be using /em dance at them for all the good that does - of course, then five more appear directly around me.
Either scale the blamed things properly, or don't have them appear where lowbies are doing missions. That's called "Annoying" and "Frustrating," not fun.
(Plus, who needs to be bribed to make the anniversary badges global?) -
Being really, brutally honest?
I use adblock, so I have no background at all. It's nice and clean. I would love an option like that. I know theming is a part of marketing as much as anything else - but an "official" option that looks just like I have it now, with the COH logo up top and nothing else, would be lovely.
