As the saying goes, whatever floats your boat.

If the loading screens consisted of about 72 hours of labor then I would think, after nearly 6 years, they would have changed them a bit. This leaves two possibilities:
    • the devs give a rat's anus to bother with them
    • or they've decided to allocate resources to other areas of the game they felt were more important

The second option would suggest the loading screens aren't as simple as assigning an intern to work on them over a weekend.

So you all heard it here folks. I favor the devs concentrate on new power sets, proliferation, story arcs, greater costume customization....& Technogeek here wants them to spend time on the loading screens.

    Have a great day.
Search the forum a bit. You'll find a *player* did new loading screens in not all that long. Ever think it's potentially "too simple to have noticed" until people brought it up? It improves the overall image of the game to not have loading screens stretched and showing "on release" graphics, especially with Ultra Mode coming up. (Note, on "being stretched," they've changed the ENHANCEMENT screen so it isn't stretched in the I17 beta now.)

Actually, yes, it was. My Gamestop receipt from release (kept because I had to send proof in to get the missing Ghost Widow heroclix from NC) shows $69.99 before store credit. 10/28/2005.

You have decided it's fair, and that's it.
2 extra character slots per account, I agree, feels a little low - but I'm speaking as an altaholic.

Compared to COV? I don't think we CAN compare the two. Well, we can, but it doesn't help the call for more slots. To wit:

    - COV was an "expanshalone." It could be played on its own. GR cannot.
    - COV (on release) had five ATs completely of its own. GR does not.
    - There was not a slot purchase plan in place at COV release. There is now. (Well, other than "Buy both, get 12 slots.")
    - There were no extra slots, period, at COV release. Those that owned both got twelve and that was it.

Now, the people I think it sucks most for are the EU server players. And while I'm quite vocally against the horrid idea of server mergers, I'm all for a server LIST merge so they can spread out some. (I realize there are issues with it.) More slots for them, in many instances, would be a godsend. And it would just be gravy for us in NA to get them.

The point, however, is that there's enough difference in the game, environment and releases that "extra server slots now because we got them then" doesn't really fly on its own.
  7. Congrats! Nearly at that point myself, though it was less a project than a "hey, look at that, should try to finish those last ATs" goal. (Last one I have to go is my Corrupter, in the high 40s, with a lead pipe. Er, wait...)

Of course, I have multiples of some ATs, and I never want to touch others (mostly the VEATs, Bane and Widow specifically, but my Scrapper was just 'meh" to me as well) again.

Think I'm currently at one of each vill AT (except corr, with a second dom really close,) 2 tanks, 3 defenders, 2 controllers (maybe 3... or one that's really close,) 2 blasters, 1 scrapper, 1 WS and 2 PB (one triform, one that finished human only.)

  10. I'm not necessarily against this, but a few things come to mind -

First, the booster packs tend to be $9.99. Game time cards tend to be $15 or $30. Now, the second works out mostly fine, as it would let you buy three packs. But what happens to the leftover $5? It's generally ok if you want a jetpack, I suppose, but somewhere there's going to be that "leftover five bucks," and I'm not sure NCSoft would want to be responsible for being, in essence, a savings account - or that a policy that says "These are converted to points, no refunds" would go over well, though I think the second would be needed in this case.

It's a bit more appealing to use them as "points" to purchase (using your terminology) if I play multiple PlayNC games (and the developers, including non-NCsoft developers, such as Arenanet, agree to use those points.)

Second, as far as not being able to use credit cards, you can purchase using Paypal as well, which links to your bank account. There are also prepaid cards that can be used.
  11. Now, where'd that copypasta go...

    Quote:

Why a full respec is not a good idea for COH.

So, you've played your Apathy/Dual Wet Noodle Tank to 50 and decided you don't like him. You've come to the forums and said "Why not let me completely respec the character!"

Well, people consider a "full respec" to be different things. I'm going to cover a complete and total character respec. If some of them don't apply, well, this comes up enough for this to be a copy and paste reply.

There are four things that the developers and game see as defining your character:
    1. Archetype
    2. Origin
    3. Primary powerset
    4. Secondary powerset

When people talk about a full respec, they're either talking about the powersets or the whole enchilada.

A Respec is short for respecification - altering what your character can do. This can be through reordering the levels you took powers, reassigning slots, and/or changing power pools. You'll note that none of this touches on changing the four listed items. The reason being that if any of those change, it's not the same character. A respec is not recreation or reimagining. It's tweaking your character a bit.

Now, let's go through some of these "full respecs."

    Primary/Secondary

You're sure to hear this repeated a good bit - Just because you've played one set, doesn't mean you know how to play them all.

For instance, my namesake tank is a Fire/Superstrength tank. I know how he plays. The most similar powerset to him at the time of writing is Dark Armor. It's resistance based, it has no knockback protection, it has a damage aura, a self heal that does damage - it even has a self rez as its tier9.

They don't play anything alike. (I can say this, because I also have a version that's DA/SS.) Fire has no Psi protection. It has no stealth. Burn has a far different effect than Oppressive Gloom, and nothing similar to Cloak of Fear. It calls for a thoroughly different style of play. With Fire, I can leave my toggles on and go to town. With Dark Armor, I have to be selective, or the times I have to herd stragglers (for instance) won't work exceptionally well. Dark Armor also does not have anything like Consume to help out with Endurance - that's in Dark Melee.

With "similar" sets being that different - try Fire vs Stone. Or Invulnerability. You now have a set at or near 50 (when most people seem to mention wanting this - "I have a 50 that...") that you don't know how to slot effectively (which means you'll be doing *at least* one more respec) and don't know how to play effectively.

That's just changing *one* side of the equation. Now add in, say, going from Stone Melee to Dark Melee. Different effects, with *very* different affects on your survivability. And you won't know how to slot that, either, or how well they synergize.

Similarly, a Stormie plays vastly differently from an Empath, or a Dark, or a Rad. Earth Control is nothing like Illusion. Combo-chasing with Dual Blades won't help you with Martial Arts.

How do I know that this ends up being a mess?

Beta testing. The devs have, on rare occasion, bumped up characters to specific levels. The most notable was when Recluse's Victory came out for testing. Everyone was made level 40 - and it was a *mess.* Sure, people made copies of their own characters, and those worked out. Then there were those (many, many of those) who said "Hey, I've never had a X/Y before, I'll make one of those!"

Like I said, it was a mess. You could very easily tell who had done that versus making copies of characters they knew.

Now, yes, over time you'll learn your powerset - but in the meantime, you're not going to be very effective, or very happy.

    Archetype

Now, given what I just said about powersets, imagine a *whole different AT.* Your tank is now an Empath? Really? You know how to survive as a Blaster because you played a Scrapper? And don't even get me started on epics.

If *sets* are that different, Archetype is that times ten.

    Impact on enhancements

IOs are a big part of the game right now. Think about IO'ing out your character. You get your KB protection, sets and the like, potentially spending millions (or more) on finishing up these sets, or working on merits or whatnot.

Now, you change your primary - again, we'll take a tank - from a resistance based one to a defense based one.

Guess what is now useless to you. You *may* have a power to stick that resist set in, somewhere, but now you're defense based - and those resist sets dont' work for you any more. That Knockback set isn't taken any more. It's even worse when you say you want to switch AT - what is a Blaster going to do with a resist set? What is a Scrapper going to do with Sting of the Manticore or Malaise's Illusions?

This isn't even touching on the fact that *you could only retain ten enhancements.* That's 1 2/3 six-slotted powers.

And you'd have nobody to blame for all that lost time and INF but yourself...

    Origin

Origin holds a strange place in this list. I'm just going to touch on it briefly.

Origin used to matter *vastly,* back in pre-beta. It determined how many powers you could learn and how skilled you could get with them. The system was scrapped, and for a long time it was mostly an RP item, as well as determining which enhancements you could use.

It now has *some* impact in the game with some temp powers - the "helper" power you get at level 1 (throwing knives, taser, mutagen, etc.) as well as some of the vet powers. The main impact, though, would be if you'd equipped with DOs or SOs, with the lost INF. That said, you would be able to get some of it back. Origin's probably the least of the problems with a full respec. Though some would, of course, complain that they no longer get a damage bonus or what have you - and who knows what the devs may do with this in the future.

    Gameplay

There are also three other things to consider.

    1. The game is designed around alts.

Seriously. If this were Guild Wars, for instance, with severely limited slots, I could see wanting to do a complete respec. But by default, you can make over 100 characters before feeling a pinch - and can purchase up to 24 additional slots per server, if you so choose. Don't like one set, make some others and try them out.

    2. It's just not that hard to level.

Seriously... it's not. With half debt inside missions, patrol XP, double XP weekends, XP smoothing, XP adjustments (typically up,) debt reduction everywhere... it just *isnt'* hard to level. And levelling "honestly" means you're learning your powersets, how they work with each other and others and hopefully how to use them best - which will only make you a stronger player.

    3. The devs say "no."

The devs have said no. They devs will continue to say no. The most recent "no" being the 4/2010 Q&A. So this is not just player opinion.

In closing, let me just say "No. Roll an alt."
  12. Eh. I could see it getting annoying really fast.

"If being _____ was famous in comic books..."
"... Superman and batman would be black."
"... Superman and Batman would be native americans."
"... Superman and Batman would be children/teens."
"... Superman and Batman would wear pink."
"... Superman and Batman would be mutants."
"... Superman and Batman would be women."

Right. It's time taken *to do* something. Not time taken *away* from something. You can't take away something that didn't exist. If you drive off in a Mercedes, it's not a Mercedes you've taken away from me, because I never had it to begin with. The time I'm taking to type this up is not time taken away from watching a movie, because I'm not planning on watching a movie until later.

Scroll up and look at my "priorities" among the ones listed, then tell me you think I'd call those unreasonable. Even with badges being the least interesting to me, I wouldn't call fixing something far out of whack "unreasonable." My interest is in the game as a whole being the best it can be, no matter where the problems are. I am, however, aware these things are done on a timetable, as ideas are kicked around on how to fix things, what might be broken otherwise, and involve all the little things (like walking by Castle's cubicle or office and saying "Hey, just had an idea on how we can at least let people use teleport in PVP again") that don't get scheduled and are invisible to us here on the outside.

And which communities are they "trying to get rid of?" Before you say "PVP," go read their comments about it where they say their goal was to grow the community and bring more people in. They weren't SUCCESSFUL, but that is what they were attempting to do.

"Lack of visible attention" is also not "trying to get rid of."

Go find specific dev actions and statements that are aimed at eliminating a community. The only ones you'll find, if you want to call them a community, are "abusers of exploits" and "RMTers."

No, it wouldn't. In a business, time is scheduled for projects. Time scheduled for one is not time taken away from another. If he's told "OK, this month you're on the team working on GR badges," that is not taking time away from working on powers. If next month he's given two weeks investigating merit balance, that's not two weeks taken away from badges. That's two weeks he's scheduled to work on merit balance.

Now, if he's scheduled for a week each on badges, powers, and drops, and powers brings up an issue that needs more attention and takes a week and a half, with drops just having the time removed instead of being bumped back, THEN you could say, in that instance, it "took time away" from drops.

Going to ask you this - how do you like to play?

See, when I started with MMs, I made a Bot/Forcefield character. (Still have it, at 26.) It wasn't a particularly *active* character - I don't mind buffing (I have an Earth/FF Controller at 50, for instance,) but for me this character felt like I was just along for the ride, and pretty well turned me off of MMs for a while. (Others really like the combo, so don't take my opinion as "that combo sucks." It just didn't work for me.)

After finally deciding to give it another try, I came to this section of the forums first and asked around, explained how I couldn't stand playing my Bot/FF since I wanted to be more active. I ended up rolling a Thugs/Poison mastermind. Completely different feel and playstyle. She was a hell of a ride up to 50, and - among other things - was the first character I "accidentally" soloed an AV on. (Wasn't watching my settings from a team the night before, came in, boss was an AV, decided "what the hell" and beat 'em.)

The primaries all play a bit differently - and of course, we've got demon summoning coming. Some are heavily geared towards melee (Ninjas, f'rinstance.) Some are heavily ranged (bots.) And the others fall somewhere int he middle (Thugs, for instance, has most pets using ranged weapons, an Arsonist that gets close to melee with fire breath, and a mostly-melee Bruiser.) The way they interact with the secondaries will be different (/Poison works well on the bruiser because of noxious gas, a PBAOE - well, P being "pet" in this case - aura that debuffs. It wouldnt' work so well on a ranged minion.)

Ask around, try out a bunch of sets, and don't let the early-mid 20s discourage you. Scrapyarders suck for a mastermind.
  19. Oh, and Alt - you're WAY out of line with this post, sorry.

    Go ahead.

Farming? Nope. Can only have one character on per account.
Harassment? Nope. When it's reported, it goes by global. And everyone has access to your global name by menu now. It follows you. Any banning is done globally as well.
RMT? They shut it off by global when reported. And do you think they're going to burn money for slots on an account that'll be killed in minutes?
Seriously. How is this a "boon for exploiters?" I Really want to hear your explanation for this.

Then what do you say to me, Alt? I have two accounts, with characters on *every* server, hero and villainside. I picked up the second account before there was even a whisper of getting more slots, and have maintained it since getting it. And I *still* would like to see more slots available. Yes, I know about the QA answer. That's irrelevant to "I'd like to see" or, more importantly, *this answer.*

And what do you say to our EU players, who are even more limited on server choices? If I were an EU player, since I don't speak French and am extremely rusty on German, I would be partway through my third account with the characters I have now, not counting deletions, temporary characters, SG fillers, etc. (though most of the last are on old trials, before the current restrictions - I still have one or two servers with a good chunk of them on the second account.)

I'm sorry, but you're way off base here. Especially pre-I13, there was a reasonably healthy PVP community - multiple SGs on *pinnacle* dedicated to PVP, for Pete's sake.

That aside from the definition of community meaning, oh, "a group that shares a common interest." Group meaning more than one person, so yes, even now there is a PVP community - and yes, more than ten people.

Besides, as I've mentioned elsewhere, we can talk about interests here (which do you do more,) but community? I PVP. I RP. I run MA arcs. I work, on occasion, on writing them. I'm interested in lore. I play heroes. I play villains. Now, which "community" am I part of?

People seem to want to exclude you (general "you") from being part of anything more than one "community" it seems in these discussions. Sorry, but it rarely works that way. So to me, seeing statements such as:

  21. "Use more?"

I don't do anything special and I get badges. I don't pursue them.

MA, I use. I have arc ideas that come up and I end up without time to fiddle with, or don't get set in a way I'm satisfied with, so I haven't published anything in a while.

PVP, I hop into zones or the arena with friends. I run around in the zones in general, between using the firebases as a benchmark on characters at 15-20 and seeing if there's anyone to fight (or bringing others in and having a bit of a fight.)

So, in terms of exposure, I probably see badges more, since you can't help but get them. In terms of actual effort put forth toward, PVP > MA >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>(x100000000000)>Badges.

While I think alt_oholic's post was out of line, I have to address this.

Why would you think you'd have to "look for new friends?" What would keep you from starting a new SG, or theme team, or RP group or whatnot with those same people at the core on another server?

And who says those groups, if they WERE separate, wouldn't be able to interact? Bring stragglers along. With SSKing, you don't have to worry about trying to make sure everyone can group or whatnot.

Make one server your villain server. Make another your hero server. Make one on some theme. And just rotate through.

I am, by the way, saying this as someone who has *done* this (and currently still is.) It's not that difficult.
