Some secondaries are sturdy if lackluster in damage enhancing features. The posterchild for this is Forcefields.

Some secondary sets are more all around with pet buffing and damage buffing or foe debuffing line. These sets would be traps, pain, thermal. It's my opinion that the dark secondary is the strongest of this type.

The third type of secondaries is the debff. The storms priority is to do it to them before they do it to you. Big tohit debuffs, defense debuffs, resistance debuffs, and slows like no other in the MM sets. Poison is heavy debuff, but it's more single target.

Classic combinations are:

Thugs/storm
Thugs/poison
Thugs/dark

Bots/dark
Bots/traps
Bots/FF
and some Bots/psn

Necro/thermal
Necro/dark
Necro/poison
Necro/storm

Mercs/traps
Mercs/FF

Ninjas/dark
Ninjas/FF
Ninjas/psn if you are a real masochist

Triumphant Defenders Forever
Psylenz FF/Psi, ArticQuark Storm/Rad, Symon BarSisyphus Bots/psn, Max VanSydow Thugs/Dk, Cyclone Symon Bots/stm, Blue Loki Ice/Cd, Widow 46526
HelinCarnate:OMG it is so terrible. I have the option to take 3 more powers but no additional slots. Boo F'ing hoo.

If you are new, an important thing you know is Bodyguard. When a pet is near you and in Defensive/Follow, this is Bodyguard mode; any damage you take is divided between you and it. That makes you much harder to kill, especially with multiple pets.

You can edit your pet control buttons by right clicking on them; also, if you give your pets commands you can drag those commands from the pet window to your power tray. One of the first thing I do on a new MM is change the basic pet commands to Defensive instead of Passive and Aggressive. There are also some quite complicated binds you can use, but I'm not an expert in that.

You can use inspirations on your pets by dragging the inspiration to the pet's name in the pet window, or dropping it directly on the pet.

Going to ask you this - how do you like to play?

See, when I started with MMs, I made a Bot/Forcefield character. (Still have it, at 26.) It wasn't a particularly *active* character - I don't mind buffing (I have an Earth/FF Controller at 50, for instance,) but for me this character felt like I was just along for the ride, and pretty well turned me off of MMs for a while. (Others really like the combo, so don't take my opinion as "that combo sucks." It just didn't work for me.)

After finally deciding to give it another try, I came to this section of the forums first and asked around, explained how I couldn't stand playing my Bot/FF since I wanted to be more active. I ended up rolling a Thugs/Poison mastermind. Completely different feel and playstyle. She was a hell of a ride up to 50, and - among other things - was the first character I "accidentally" soloed an AV on. (Wasn't watching my settings from a team the night before, came in, boss was an AV, decided "what the hell" and beat 'em.)

The primaries all play a bit differently - and of course, we've got demon summoning coming. Some are heavily geared towards melee (Ninjas, f'rinstance.) Some are heavily ranged (bots.) And the others fall somewhere int he middle (Thugs, for instance, has most pets using ranged weapons, an Arsonist that gets close to melee with fire breath, and a mostly-melee Bruiser.) The way they interact with the secondaries will be different (/Poison works well on the bruiser because of noxious gas, a PBAOE - well, P being "pet" in this case - aura that debuffs. It wouldnt' work so well on a ranged minion.)

Ask around, try out a bunch of sets, and don't let the early-mid 20s discourage you. Scrapyarders suck for a mastermind.

I did this with my master mind. Each master mind has 3 buttons default for controlling pets.
You can right click and edit these buttons. One is attack, one is follow, and one is passive. I edit the buttons so that attack -aggressive is now attack -defensive. Follow is changed to follow -defensive.
I do that so by default if I tell my pets to follow me or attack something they will fall back into body guard mode by default. I also have my pets follow me and I jump into the middle of spawns and get aggro, allowing bodyguard to protect me. Makes me feel like im playing my tank, just have to baby sit the pets. They will attack anything that is attacking you.

I am having a blast with my Demon/force field MM. I have a 50 Bots/Dark also. Each plays different. I deleted a 34 Ninja/Force Field because they just plain suck. My son plays a 44 Mercs/Traps and loves it. If you want a piece of advice pick Mercs, Thugs, or Bots first to try out masterminds. They are all mostly range and you can experiment on secondary's. I went dark because of the debuffs and I get an extra pet.

I hope that helps.

HEY! It's actually a pretty nasty combo. Mix in Aid Self and Aid Other (along side stamina) and you got THE Archvillain killer you need.

I also have a very fun thug/ta. And am gonna make a couple demon summoners. My main love though is ninja/poison. Some tactics for masterminds in general and ninja/poison in particular.

Pet control: master it. Weather you just edit the initial 3 macros, create a macro for each stance and command, or use the very good numpad binds. No matter what you do however you need to learn how to control your henchmen. It's a matter of life and death (of the team).

Personal Attacks: Take them or leave them. For most sets you'll be better off without them though.

Stamina: By no means a requirement. It does help however. Especially in long fights.

And now for ninja/poison. This combo is heavily single target for debuffs and damage. It's also rather high damage. Your best when focusing fire on a single enemy at a time. Although they can do a decent job handling large groups of foes too, provided you can keep up with healing them. Either run on a setting with few enemies of higher level, or many enemies of lower level. Do not try running +4/x8. You'll regret it. Your two strengths as a ninja/poison are defeating single strong foes, and many weak foes. Your weakness is many strong foes.
