This thread is losing it's focus. We need to concentrate on the bad players and how to make the lulz stop.

They need to become like the rest of us uptight, particular players who nitpick other people's builds and playstyles until they either become just like us or are labeled a terminally bad player.

Or maybe perhaps he was teaching you that under the statue is NOT a safe zone, because after hearing your story I wouldn't stand under there.

I can learn how to play a toon by just doing MA stuff, but it is more difficult to tell how effective you are when you are lvl 5 teamed up with a bunch of 50's killing things faster than you can guage your powers.

I really hope that more people go back to playing actual content along with their MA stuff, because so far the Architect has rendered everything but TF's seemingly obsolete to the player base.

I played my first 3-4 months of this game without joining an SG. I only played one character, I teamed whenever possible and made a few friends along the way.

It wasn't until my first SG, BOSS, that I REALLY started learning the game. I apparently was a decent player because people told me so(I had quite a few actually make the comment "I wanna go make a grav/FF now), but there were some things about the game that I only learned through playing with a diverse SG such as BOSS. Shortly around that time I had also met Marut and Genna, started bubbling for hami raids, and even led one(it failed, lol). My new groups of friends were teaching me a lot about the numbers, the powersets and how they sometimes meshed better in certain combinations than others, and of course the art of fighting AV's and GM's.

I didn't really feel like I was any different of a player, though, just because people were there to spout information at me. I still played the same, I just had more information about how to build my character.

This was a totally natural learning process, though. I learned more about the game by playing the game. I don't think that anything past the tutorial would be something I would personally be interested in when it comes to learning the game, though helpful hints when teaming were/are always appreciated.

Long story short, I think teaming is the best tool. I don't think any sort of training program or advanced tutorial is going to be something that anyone would be interested in because it takes away from what they pay their $15 a month for: Playing the game, having fun, etc.

I think a form of this could work, so long as it isn't set in a "learning or training environment". Just team with people and kindly let them know that they should not have six-slotted flurry or that it's not very beneficial to their character to have 3 travel powers and stealth when they could have picked up something from their primary/secondary that would far more enhance the character's survivability/usefulness. If they don't want to listen, then they must be having fun with what they have and that's what they wanna do.

I still laugh every time I read it because while I'm honestly drunk and TRYING to be funny, the person who randomly started /telling me all this was legitimately trying to roleplay with that as a premise for their character. I can see what they were going for, but the way that it was presented to me in that instance was just hilarious at the time. It might be a "had to have been there" type of thing, but the heroish spirit lord going down on you after he killed your father is either a japanese cartoon that you can't find in Wal-Mart or just a really bad translation of what you really wanted to say.

Happy Father moment:

Being that I'm stuck on an Army base for a few months without the family, I was really excited to go spend time with the wife and kids for this recent Memorial Day weekend. As soon as my wife opened the door she received a peck on the lips and a single question: "Where is it?"
My reply came shortly, as my four-year-old daughter came running down the hallway screaming "Daddy, I got it! I got it! You wanna see?"
"Yeah, I wanna see, get over here!" This 'it' had been talked about over phone conversations between me and her nightly for almost a week.
After a brief hug and kiss, I was handed a gold medal for a quarter-mile race that she had won involving over forty other kids her age. It wasn't a spectacular medal in appearance, but in meaning it might as well had been from the olympics. It's the first thing she's won, and being a Marine(we run a lot, go figure) I couldn't have been prouder.

I handed back the medal as I heard my 2-year-old son come down the hallway, preparing for our reunion with my arms stretched out in front of me in the universal sign of "come give daddy a hug". He stopped about five feet short of me, smiles, and says "I pooted." My wife chuckled, and I walked on my knees the final distance to hug my son.

Each secondary has their weaknesses and advantages. Grav/Storm, for example, or "Controller Chaos Mode", throws guys around and can be a lot of fun solo, but on teams it can be looked down upon because for some odd reason melee hates the form of damage mitigation called knockback.

Grav/FF, Grav/Sonic are both good combos that have the potential to make VERY survivable toons depending on what your epic set is. FF has some serious situational powers, though, while Sonic has a bunch of resistance buffs/debuffs and an AoE knockdown/hold/debuff power that can really help out in a pinch.

Grav/TA is like one of the best True Controller sets. It adds a LOT to your control, and throws in some nice debuffs.

Radiation, emp and Kin are three of your highest demanded secondaries for many reasons, so they are a definite shoe-in for the running if you don't have toons with either of these sets already.

What I always do when considering a new toon is look at what I already have and try to make something different, or look at what I already have and see if I can make a toon that does it better.

The worst part about teaching someone how to be better than they are is when they start thinking that being better than themselves involves smack-talk. It becomes embarassing when your student starts putting himself down in public to the point he starts believing the insults, gets depressed, then stops trying only to have a crucial moment where they decide they can do it despite what they said to themselves.

They triumphantly rise above the self-inflicted depression, and try to overcome their pessimist side before it causes the same effect by telling them they aren't worth anything for hours at a time. Seeing as how you can't escape yourself, this antagonization can go on for hours, days, even months.
Eventually, the student is going to break down again. As with any form of abuse, however, this can only go the same way so many times before proactive retaliation will become a viable option.

They usually use guns, or hanging. A self-help egomaniac depressive complex will either want the definitive power of a firearm to destroy their abusive selves, or a rope to show dominance by determination. In the end...the outcome is the same. Well, unless the rope snaps(but only AFTER you've already deprived your brain of enough oxygen to damage it permanently) or the bullet goes through your brain and just takes out the nerves behind your eyes, blinding you for life and causing you to lose all motor skills on the left side of your body and the ability to control urination.
So, you see why it's just better to be lazy, Champion? Don't be better than who you are, claim a position that you have a perma-lack of motivation and call it a friggin' day.
