No, I don't play on Virtue although I used to occasionally drop in. *shrug*

And now that you posted a pic, I'm betting it will be easier to nod and agree with you while we have something to stare at.

That's arguable. May not make Stalkers more survivable in all cases, but it may make them more survivable in some cases (by making the other Scrapper or Brute less survivable by dropping the aggro on them).

Also, I don't see why it wouldn't make up for some AoE. Surely a placate + 50% crit fireball has to amount to something compared to everyone else's vanilla fireball.

Actually forgetting the sets that stalkers just don't get every primary loses either an AoE or a survivability tool

    Broadsword
    Dark
Energy Melee (LOL not even whirling hands ?)
    Claws
    Katana vs Ninja Blade
    Martial arts
Heck even spines loses spine burst.

You toss in sets like /fire /elec /shield

The stalkers don't even come close
Of those, I'd only count Broadsword/Katana (since they're basically the same set), Energy Melee, Claws and Martial Arts.

I can count how many times a damage aura would even make a difference. For burst dmg ATs, those auras only amount to 2-3 tics of damage at most. Why isn't Blazing Aura and Hotfeet amazing on my DP/Fire blaster? Because everything's dead partways through Hail of Bullets. The aura's damage contributions are practically nothing to them compared to the survivability contributions they add (without Blazing/Hotfeet, I'd have to throw another attack after HoB to kill the majority of foes).

That said, I'm not saying dmg auras don't contribute dmg, but they just don't contribute as much damage if you can outright kill foes quickly, which Stalker, Blaster and heck, even Scrappers can do.

Also, Spines didn't lose Spine Burst on Stalkers. You must have meant to say Quills.

Wizards in fantasy worlds study magic and come to understand it and how it works. Is it then science? As you say, the rules of what a thing is don't have to necessarily follow our own.
Meeeh, now you're just intruding on author creative concept, that if it's not based primarily on real-world events, then it's MAGIC FICTION.

The point that a few made was: origin doesn't matter. All origin (science, technology, magic) is just means of categorizing tropes which, in and of itself, doesn't matter. You don't need to categorize anything just like you don't need tropes. What it comes down to is if you accept it and keep reading or not and don't. At that point, it's all the interpretation of the reader, which is basically what you wrote in the quote. That's why categorizing stuff like this is so pointless, because you'll never get the majority to agree on how it's done.

But I actually like the way Arcana described it, advancing in any one 'type' of ability will get you closer to indistinguishably. Eventually, you get to a point that your high technology can do so much, so easily and without any real cost, it's about as good as just poofing stuff into existence and it working. Cars and jets and bullet trains sure are awesome at getting people around...can't wait for when all of those transports have 0 requirement for fuel...then throw it away because we can simply teleport to any point in the galaxy...

Yeaaaah, Stalkers didn't pay anything for the changes they got.

The price of 'not ever being looked at in another decade' is also not happening. The devs themselves said they were going to do a bit more tweeking with Stalkers...like, the next beta. Yes, they're going to normalize the Assassin's Strike animations so that they all animate in 1 second vs a couple animating faster than 1 and the majority animating slower than 1. They also said they may look into shortening Placate's animation. This was all put off till later because they didn't have the resources to do it when the Assassin's Focus gimmick was added.

So yeaaaah, Stalkers didn't pay what you think they paid...

    etc etc etc
Yes, corner cases like Claws and the Swords very much lose AoE but many of the sets lose no AoE or only lose AoE on a technicality that it wasn't very good AoE to begin with (Dark Consumption, Repulsing Torrent, that cone in Staff) but gain the ability to combine their inherent with the AoE they have, resulting in a 50% chance of double damage on the targets hit.

Primarily, why I didn't want Stalker to be so greatly pushed beyond Scrapper was because I wanted the proliferated sets to retain as much AoE as possible, but the changes made to stalker may justify the old 'sacrifice AoE' some of the old sets did. When Stalkers get Fire Melee, I want them to keep Fire Sword Circle because that's one of the keystone powers of the set...and I want them to keep Breath of Fire because that is a decent power and a thematic one that can fulfill certain concepts and it'd suck if Stalkers lose either one for AB.

That said, I thought you were leaving Reppu. I mean, you didn't put a bikini on...not even a one piece.

At that time, he agreed that he would make Shin Breaker a 10s attack (due to the loss of Rib Cracker's -resist) but I guess things have changed after the new Assassin Strike.

SJ's performance is really good but overpowered? Nah. Stalker has no secondary that can deal massive aoe damage. Stalker's performance is still very "restricted". It is other sets that need to be brought closer to SJ's.

Just to point out: It's kind of dumb to mention that it 'seemed' unfair that Stalker's inherent didn't apply fully to an attack under the assumption of the AT's functionality before it was altered then change stance afterward...not if you're going to apply the logic that Stalkers get no secondary that can deal more damage. Because if the AT's functionality can be altered to greatly improve its performance, the AT can just as easily (possibly even more easy) receive more secondaries that throw that argument right out the window.

And frankly, I think there's room to bring down StJ *AND* bring up other primary sets to even them out more. Because, under the premise of 'bringing sets closer to StJ', you come at the problem with the solution of 'moar dmg'. More damage is not always nor should it always be the answer. If Energy Melee's stuns were greatly improved, I'd buy that buff and play EM under the premise it is a ST set with high control. Don't need DPS to be fun or effective...

  11. So Hybrid slot...think it might be a sort of 'slot' or 'slots' granted to put into your other powers that adds a granted power to the selected powers? Like the buff hybrid tree may give 1 slots that you can put in your power. Put it in a melee attack and any ally around the target gets [insert buff], put it in a toggle or aura and anyone near you gets [insert buff] as long as they stick by you. Put it in a buff or heal and it adds [insert buff] to that buff or heal to all allies the power targets.

Assault tree could have 3 slots, put it in your powers and you get to do damage with it. Put it in a buff/heal or debuff and foes around the target take damage. Put it in an aura buff and it turns the power into a pseudo-dmg aura. Put the slots in actual attacks and you do more damage with said attack.

Use the new implemented PPM feature so the effect is more evenly balanced between fast ST powers vs slow or AoEs.

Meh, just a thought. Would be kind of cool if, for the melee tree, there were ways to buff your mez resistance/protection by blasting stuff or adding to debuff resists or maybe even self heals by hitting. Or perhaps it supercharges inherent abilities or grants you special versions of inherents of the ATs.

To add to Siolfir's post: Back before those adds, builds that omit Assassin's Strike were talked about for lots of sets but StJ stood out by having an attack that could eclipse AS outright by hitting as hard and animating faster.

So was CU's crit considered bad? Maybe not if one was considering a build without AS. With both, you'd have to pick one; a.) use hidden AS then placate+CU or b.) use hidden CU and not use AS.

I'd still consider it a give and take but no matter how you slice it, CU was strong but built with a mechanic that rewarded you for using it after AS, not from a cold start.

Now? It's just absurd because the direction of Stalkers was completely altered. It'd be like giving Brutes a hard time building fury but later gave them a 100% fury builder they can use at the start of every battle, changing them from a slow starter to a burst AT while retaining all their advantages (lol ATO proc).

    Blast: 12
    Control: 9
    Mastermind: 7
    Support: 14

    Armors: 11
    Assault: 8
    Manipulation: 7

So yes, I don't see why adding yet more melee sets should hold up development of the ATs that don't have nearly as many options. Hence it's perfectly understandable to me that most of the pay-for sets are Melee-oriented, and would not have been developed at all (and certainly not at the pace they are being done) if not for people willing to buy them.

So if Staff gets pushed back a month so that it's not back to back with the other premium melee sets, that makes complete sense to me.
Just to balance the attack options out:

I'd love a thrown weapons blast set! And that + sword assault set! Toss in some shuriken, some explosive shuriken, tomahawk, and a big old buzz saw spinny-derfinfg. For Assault, a kicking + pistols combo and a version of Hail of Bullets that also involved some kicks (and less damage and smaller radius for balance).

You guys did some nice work for Staff now get some martial arts into the blast sets!

Problem with that mentality: it's the top of the list for a variety of reasons.

    Single Target: It's Street Justice.

    DPS: StJ again

    Burst: StJ once again

    AoE: well it's not last

    Control: again, not last

So the next question is, where does StJ sit on the categories it doesn't sit at the top of? On AoE, MA and EM are dead last and probably only get near StJ for ST and DPS and may be equal for burst.

For control? I'd probably put Broadsword/Katana and Claws[EDIT] last, none of which touch StJ on any of those categories.

So why not buff those weaker sets? Because some of those weaker sets are fine. They're middle-of-the-road which isn't bad. Outliers should be adjusted to resemble those, not the other way around. Either you lower outlier's capabilities your limit those capabilities behind disadvantages and weaknesses. Can you point to a weakness of StJ?

Without the Hide proc in the build, they cant do what is suggested AS into hidden status and release big attack for crit!

All sets got an ATO set. Stalkers allowed them to rehide. I'm not sure I'd count the ATO as a buff to the ATO and rather more of just being an awesome set for Stalkers.
Lol did you read what I said? The 'hide proc' would be a base effect of Assassin's Focus. Period.

Basically, building up 3 Assassin's Focus shifts you into hide at the end of the animation then you use an attack. An ATO proc wouldn't be necessary (or even exist) and you could outright skip Assassin's Strike (which you can do right now) and still get *something* from Assassin's Focus (which you cannot do right now).
  19. Frankly, I'm hoping the whole EM powerset will just be reworked. I had proposed an idea to give the powerset to 'modes' activated by it's higher-up attacks: Total Focus would activate a kind of 'Overpower' mode which would make your stuns higher mag or higher duration for a several seconds while Energy Transfer would activate a 'Disintegration' mode that caused your ST attacks to spread disintegration like Beam Rifle...but I have 0 playtime with Beam Rifle so not even sure how that works, but basically it'd add some AoE for free or improve your controls.

For AS, well I frankly feel they kind of went all over the place to boost Stalker but didn't fix the actual problems with the AT. I mean, why did they go and give AS a super crit *AND* give them an enhancement that rehides them? One of the underlying problems with the AT was getting good use of hide. Why not have just rolled that effect (the ATO proc) into a mechanic like current Assassin's Focus then make hidden AS faster and and uninterruptible? Then you basically get the 1-shot chance of 'hide' after building 3 focuses to put you back in hide and then choose what power to follow up with (probably AS since it'd be fast and crit for massive damage). No, you wouldn't be able to simply use AS whenever you wanted (since with no focus, it'd be slow and interruptible) but you'd also be making use of Demoralize whenever you build focus (and use AS with it...not to mention the focus stacks would have a use for other powers besides just AS).

Meh, the way they made Stalkers, it takes practically all emphasis from hide (leaving it a crippled effect), devalues placate and masks it behind a Scrapping mini-game. My point is they could have just turned a few things around, it not be such a ridiculous buff and be *FAR* more in the AT's style.

Perspective #1: VIP beta is a privilege, not a a right. That you get to playtest content before it's released does not put one in the position to demand or expect that content's release schedule. With the privilege that comes with VIP beta, one also accepts that release schedule be it forced release or delays. And this is the very reason set schedules are not the norm.

Perspective #2: It *is* a money grab to release costume pieces and powersets back to back weeks on end. Players have already complained how many of the power and costume sets have been pay-for even with some of the VIP-only releases. You either want paragon studios to release *ALL* powersets as pay-for sets and *ALL* costume sets every week or you want *SOME* powersets to be pay-for sets and *SOME* costume sets be pay-for sets with some free ones sprinkled in.

Perspective #3: You're selfish and gluttons. Staff isn't released now, so time to flame? What about the complainers whining about how so many of the new sets are melee sets? Who gives a crap if it's ready now, if *SOMEONE* didn't hold you back from engorging on melee, you wouldn't have anything released for months and then you'd be whining about that (or worse, try to use that as an argument for releasing more content "You guys haven't released a melee set in over 5 months! Controllers got x set and MM got y but now...")

Perspective #4: You have *NO* idea! You don't know what the release schedule for the next powerset is, could be several months before we get any new powers or even the next issue release. Releasing all the new sets *NOW* leaves an undetermined gap which only gives you more fuel to b*tch about and we can't have that. So not only do you have no idea if we'll get anything new of worth for you, but no idea how high to the heavens you'd complain if you were in danger of waiting that long...because their Marketing department already though of it and planned ahead. Yup, those marketing ***hats outsmarted us. Effing shame, really.

    Deb: What's a liger?
