    My own drop rate analysis left me with those streaks:

    1996 defeats -> Fortunata Hypnosis : Sleep Duration (Superior) (Recipe)
    636 defeats -> Hecatomb : Rech/Acc (Superior) (Recipe)
    1029 defeats -> Coercive Persuasion : Confuse Duration/End Reduction (Superior) (Recipe)
    81 defeats -> Hecatomb : Chance for Negative Energy Dam (Recipe)
    5814 defeats -> Soulbound Allegiance : Dam (Superior) (Recipe)

    Two purples within 81 defeats, then none for 5814 defeats. Such is the nature of random drops, indeed.

    However, you have to take into account that purples are not a separate pool that has a 1:5000 chance. It's actually part of Pool A. What this means is, you shouldn't think of it as a chance every X defeats, but as a chance every X Pool A recipe drops. The drop rate itself varies whether you're fighting minions, lieutenants or bosses, so you can't just say "1 in 5000" because if you're fightinng with lieutenants, it's higher (about 1 in 2000) and if you're fighting with bosses, even higher.

    Based on my own numbers after defeating 10000 mobs, I got 384 Pool A recipes in total, and 5 of those were purples. So based on those numbers, it's about a 1:120 chance of getting a purple recipe every time you get a Pool A recipe drop.

    Thus, every time you look at your drops and say "I haven't gotten a purple in 5000 defeats!", actually think, how many recipes did you get during that time? It's not just purples that drop a lot less when you're on a team. It's the entire pool.

  3. My arc #89438 is a direct continuation of the Imperious Task Force. The last map was supposed to be 'Burning Forest', but since it was pulled out, it's currently using another outdoor map. I'd mostly like feedback on difficulty, since I've been told everything from "it's too easy, lame that there was no AV at the end" to "those boss spawns in the final misison are killing me, this is too hard!"

    Windows doesn't recognize your 7900gs at all? If it recognizes it as a secondary adapter, you can try going to the screen settings on XP and 'expanding' the desktop to a second monitor. That should give you something out of the 7900gs, to make sure it's working.

    Try going into the BIOS (Del or F2 at the boot screen) and make sure the "Default video adapter" is set to PCI Express and not Internal. That should make sure the 7900gs is seen as the "main" card.

    If both things fail, and you want to make sure the card works, download a linux distro (Ubuntu is great, but if you don't plan to use Linux regularly, Puppy Linux is only 100MB) and boot with that. If it doesn't recognize your card, you're probably in trouble. If it does recognize the card, some Windows update did indeed screw things up.
  5. The best strategy to do this event without the zone crashing or being unable to reach the GM in time seems to be... ignore the first announcement.

    The event was announced in Galaxy and everybody rushed there. Thirty seconds later, it was announced in Founders. The Galaxy instance crashed from too many people overloading it, while Founders was pretty empty. My team went there but we were too late, due to the zone crash and the characters being unable to log back in.

    The next announcement was on PI, but my team noticed that Croatoa had it going a few minutes later. We headed to Croatoa instead. While PI was full and crashing, our teams in Croatoa completed the event with no lag at all. Around 50 people in the zone seem to be ideal, and one controller was enough to cover everything that was spawning in the green banner, while a full team was on purple, a full team of red, and three people on blue.

    So: if your zone has near 100 people in it, and the event is going in another zone... head there instead. It'll be much better that way.

    Indeed. The time dilation was so high, my 60-second Phantom Army lasted for an entire 5-minute fight at a banner.

    I also crashed out (as did several people in the zone) and now I can't get back in because "Character Doctor Leo is still logging out. Wait a second, then try again."

    Update: the entire zone had crashed. There was a mini-rollback and people lost their badges. Yay.

    Update 2: and again, in Galaxy City. The zone just died.

    Yes, at least according to someone on Freedom:

    [Freedom TF]Darlington: u got purples drops from trick or treating??
    [Freedom TF]Eternal Shadow Knight: ty... and yes
    [Freedom TF]Darlington: holy crap!
  8. Me, I had 137K. I was about to get serious with damage farming when Day Jobs hit, now I'm glad I spent all those nights "working" on Day Job badges instead of damage farming. I got the original Empath at 1 billion HP after months of heal farming in Tyrant's lava pit (got the healing badges for 10 different supergroups on the way there, too.)

    Halooween Jack

    I remember last year I had a team killing Eochai for three hours in a row in Talos until Jack spawned. It was around 30 Eochai defeats without Jack showing his face.
  10. Those are pretty dang funny. I liked the farming one best so far.

  13. Something I noticed in my last Master of runs, is that the LKT-1700 Rocket Pack power (the one you get by using the $20 time cards/retail cards, or paying $5 a month) does not go away when you select "No Temporary Powers".

    Technically it's an "Inherent" power and not a "Temporary" power, but so are the vet rewards, and those are disabled, while the Rocket Pack isn't.
  14. Fearghas recommended this arc to me about two months ago. It's quite fun.

    I made the original Blinkie Finder that COHRadar is based on, and I'm personally glad I won't need to use it anymore. Tabbing in and out of the game to try to locate the last few mobs was rather annoying; I very much prefer to have that information in the in-game map.

    Neither Blinkie Finder nor COH Radar are worth squat for the purpose you're claiming. You have to record the demo, exit the game, parse the demo, then go back in. In a PVP match, your opponent has noticed you unmoving for several seconds and completely murdered you; or at the very least, changed his location.

    It's still reporting them wrong for the purposes of my post (boss-only rates). I probably should have been more clear on that.
  17. And now, here's the data for a boss only run. I took my Scrapper to Portal Corp. and started targeting every boss in sight. 118 Death Mages, 37 Warhulks, 19 Fake Nemesis, 8 Zeus Class Titans, 4 Master Illusionists, 4 Dark Ring Mistresses, 3 Gunslingers, 2 Chief Soldiers, 2 Tac Ops Commanders, 1 Chief Mesmerist, 1 Dark Dwarf and 1 Void Slayer later, I had the following results.

    DropStats is reporting the drop rates wrong, if it really were 2.83% I would have gotten 200*0.0283=5.66 recipes, when I actually got 17, making the drop rate 8.5%; or 9% if we count the Pool C/D drop as a Pool A rare, which may be the actual method of rewarding it. Has anyone confirmed that C/D is a separate pool? This would make it possible to get a Pool A and a Pool C/D on the same enemy defeat.

    Similarly, the actual salvage drop rate was 20.5%; and SOs dropped 5% of the time. This isn't actually a bug, it's DropStats converting everything to minion equivalents, which is no good for reporting a boss-only run. It really needs to separate the rates in minions, lieutenants and bosses.
  18. I'll make another post out of my raw data, this one in order to show just how streaky the rare drops can be.

    Code:

    As you can see, I've gotten two purples within 81 kills of each other, but I've not gotten one in the last 4748 kills. It's that streaky. Similarly, I got two Pool A rares within 7 kills of each other, but I've also gone 1672 kills without any.

  19. You know those yellow titles that the devs hand out at special events? I was thinking they'd make the perfect marker for trial accounts. Probably not yellow, but a gray "City Guest" or something on top of the character's name would be a great indicator.

    With the limitations imposed in trial accounts, it's hard for them to get on a team and be shown the ropes of the game; if I could look at a character and immediately realize it's a trial account, it would be easier for me to offer my help.
  20. I'll add my voice to those asking for the event backstory. But in addition to that,

    Why are we even bothering to destroy the banners?

    I'm serious here. There are no apparent consequences for just letting them spawn, and despawn. The banners spawn, defenders flock to them, and then... they disappear. Very mysterious, but why should we be so desperate to destroy the banners? This makes even less sense villainside, where villains normally wouldn't care about something weird being summoned unless it affected them.

    I would like something to happen if the timer runs out and the banners are still up. Doesn't have to be something huge; maybe a small debuff to everybody who was around a banner when they despawned; maybe a buff to the zone's mobs with a suitably scary aura; just... something that says "uh oh, we should have destroyed those banners before <consequence> happened". Killing everybody near the banners in a giant mystical explosion would work too, that's what the fires in Steel Canyon do; but that doesn't give a villain an incentive to go near them in the first place.
  21. I figured I'd share the results of my 5,334 solo kills in the last few days. Quick version: four purples, two costume recipes.

    Sounds good to me. Anything as long as it just opens the file and does its job. Though I personally would either leave the default as "." for the current directory, or leave it empty and have DropStats fill it with info from the registry if empty; could easily be done by adding these to preferences.txt:

    use Win32::TieRegistry;
    $dir = $Registry->{'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cryptic\Coh\Installa tion Directory'} if $dir eq '';
