AS to having Elements over CS x, I'd have to go back to see the real differences of things I need to have to use. Off the top of my head, I NEED, the lasso tool, layers, certain brushes, and the smudge tool.

As for Painter's lesser version cousin, just say no. It is light years away from the original, and so many other programs can do it better for less.
I really liked SAI, but not sure of it's price.

Would you happen to know the size of the jpeg? Or what dpi it is? You can usually get a decent print if the file is over 200 dpi, 300 would be better...

Sorry to be late to this discussion. As a former art teacher. Respectfully I disagree with the above point about there being no wrong way of teaching it. I believe there are several wrong ways. One of the most obvious and still practiced today is what I like to call "The Cookie Cutter Method".

Where no student is different, the lesson is so incredibly simplified a monkey could do it, and the result is equally boring. To see an example look at all the outline drawings of hands turned into construction paper cutouts glued on to paper plates in grade school class rooms.

These kids aren't bothered to be taught the differences in their fingers, the differences in their hands. Nope, all hands are alike in their world, and why bother teaching them art, when they can "craft" it. Man I hate scrapbookers. They're like kids again, only using expensive acid to create...

Anyway, I digress. Perhaps your teacher Larissa didn't want you to use smudging as a crutch, while you first learn the hard way. I'm sure they would have given in years later, when they might have been convinced you knew the difference of when to use it, and when not to use it.

In the case of CR's work, it is "his" method. And he's probably done it so much, he knows just how much to apply, when to apply it and when not to. It's one of the many things in his art repertoire. I personally like the depth of his ink work, knowing what to make dark and what not to... it's a skill not many people work on.

Some teachers do have very specific methods. There ARE techniques which can't be ignored, and some that shouldn't be attempted till the student has a grasp of the basics. Smudging is one of those things that can make you get carried away, and yet they make special tools to do them, those little cones of rolled up compressed paper into a perfect point. Other teachers will show you to do it with common tissue paper.

There are plenty of methods to achieve almost the exact same look, but some of them are aesthetically more pleasing to others than some. I love real ink work, even a great digital piece printed on exceptional paper, can't compare to that inky sheen on bristol, or that slightly raised surface of black on white. It's a visceral thing no?

As for the right way to teach art, yes I agree there is no right way.

For years many people thought Anime drawings were the end of realism, but you can't draw Anime without some knowledge of reality. In fact the more reality you put into anime the better it gets, well imho. But it is one of those short cut methods that teachers frown upon, because they feel the student is cheating themselves of the nuances of learning. Anime is probably a bad example as to some it is high art and to others not so much. But I've always thought it had promise coupled with real life drawing experience.

I wonder what your teacher would have thought of Air Brushing, which is all about the smudging in my brain. Digital art to me is at least 10% smudging, but then a lot of traditional artists, teachers, I have had, have hated digital art for it's short cuts. They just don't get the nuance of it.

I say Smudge away, and damn the torpedoes! Ummm well you know what I mean... right?

EDIT: duh blending stumps, my brain must have dumped that in the last sleep session. Would you agree though Wassy that not all art is intended for mass reproduction or photographic archiving. So if that is the case, smudging will fit the purpose of that particular piece? I agree that it should be done in moderation, and after you learn to do shading the more difficult way.

Ahhhh haaa! Excellent... now what to do when I round them up? how hard can you spank an art leech before they bruise?
  5. Did I miss the outing of the art leeches thread? Gees I go away for a month and all the good stuff happens... How does one spot an art leech? Can we say art leech on this forum? Am I condoning the behavior of art leeches by giving away free art? Am I an art leech enabler? Am I writing art checks my art leeches can't cash? Do art leeches dream of costume contests? If you're sleeping with an art leech, and you can't draw, does that make you an art leech who-re? Was that one too many questions...
  6. Umm TA you've never been a client of mine... if I had charged you for all that art, we'd be having this conversation on my brand new Alienware laptop... but I understand, I sometimes blur the client/friend line. It's why I've had to move 4 times in the last month, they keep finding me...
  7. I don't know if this has been mentioned. But even as a local artist, I highly respect a great deal of those non-local people, Jon Becaro may not play this game, but I'd vouch for him anywhere, and consider him a very good friend - that came about because of his DA account, our common nationalities, and this game we both draw.

I may lose sales to him, but that doesn't bother me. The collector is a collector by definition, not a patron, who supports 1 artist entirely. As for making friends with your clients, I'd advise against it, next thing you know they want to attend your birthday, and really I draw the line at feeding these people.
  8. Yes the Bamboo line is great, not the old Bamboo which is fine for starting on, but since Wacom has upgraded the line, don't waste your money on those...

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE PRESSURE LEVELS.

I wouldn't settle for anything less than 1,024 which use to be only available on a pricier model (the Intuos 3 and up). Now the starting Bamboo, the Bamboo Fun and Bamboo craft all have 1,024 to start with... check here to make sure you are looking at the NEW BOXES and DESIGN.

I'm not sure about the Bamboo Pen or Bamboo Touch on that line, cause the specs for pressure levels aren't given. But maybe in the store you can ask, or test it. Make sure you are talking to someone who knows more than you do, and not some seasonal punk there to sell whatever...

Also because this is a new line, a lot of stores will sell their floor models for ridiculous prices, shop around. Even the Bamboo Fun which is $199 is cheaper than the Intuos 3 of the same size. Now why are pressure levels so important? Well it's the difference of the tablet picking up a thick to thin line, which is normally how most people draw depending on how hard they push down on the pencil. Same thing here, the tablet with 1,024 levels will recognize your attempt at making lighter lines.

You would think that a tablet with half that could do it, BUT IT CAN'T! So if the box says it has 512 levels of pressure, put it down unless it fell off a truck. Then try it once, save up for a real tablet and use that thing as a door stop!

EDIT: yeah did some more clicking on those $69 Bamboo Pen & Bamboo Touch models, 512s both... run from them, give your $69 to me if you want to throw your money away. These two models are just like the Bamboos of old, so what have we learned kiddies? Always check the box, listen to your Uncle LJ, and eat your veggies!
  9. I can't speak for any other artist, but I hate sending out roughs. First of all they are roughs. Secondly, there's no way for a client to have the exact same vision you have, or viceversa, so the rough becomes a "translator" speaking a language dialect neither person shares. Which isn't the job of the rough in the first place. I feel the rough is a) to show the client you've got something to build on, and b) a service to them based out of courtesy. You don't have to give a rough, it's a just a nice thing to do.

I'm currently only giving clients 2 things, my base pencils, and the finish, and both at the end simultaneously. Only because I am staggeringly behind, well in my own opinion. I do have wonderful clients like Gray Huntress who care more about my health and creativity as a person and artist, rather than the unfinished pieces she paid for ages ago... or a month ago.

I could show all the stages, like I used to do, post them here, but I find I am only doing so to get community feedback, and constantly checking the thread I made to see that. When I could be starting a new piece, or thinking of a new piece free of my own guilt... So I'm sort of here but not here for a few weeks.

  10. The problem with looking at your toon done by other artists, is that it always makes me want to draw him again, after seeing their approach, and realizing, duh I could have done that but haven't... now my brain is full of drawing you more loosely...

This is a REALLY nice take, fluid, animated, the interpretation is close enough to know who it is exactly. Congrats.
  11. I just said No to be different, but now everyone is doing it. Darn.

I am back to work tomorrow, but my TV sale is not working for me. My plan is to finish my queue, take a short break, and then come back with a manageable schedule. The 4 at a time thing was perfect. Easy to maintain, easy to do turn overs, and easy to stay inspired.

Thanks for thinking of me though.

I was gonna send you updated info TA, but I want to finish my queue first before I solicit any new work. My account is open till January, expect some new finished work tomorrow!

  13. LOL that made my day...

Another version, in one of my current styles... this only took a few minutes cause I had all the layers set.

I need to get a pic of the updated image with his additions too.

Hope it was worth the wait, trying a new quick style of cell shading. I'd color it my normal way, but no time tonight. May try again later... though I gotta say I have been in a major slump for weeks, and your kid's drawing has been the most satisfying thing I've done in ages! Tell him thanks!

  15. Can I take a crack at inking and coloring him? I need something to motivate me...

Hope you don't mind, I didn't wait... gonna color him later... gotta run and make dinner for 3 hungry kids (20 somethings)...

What happens when you plan to work all week? Well the gods of gaming release that new *ahem* other game, and your son LOVES playing it so much, the two of you waste a day goofing around...

Then you get an email from some *ahem* fantasy game, saying it's now free to play... in between that you get a cold in your back that feels like a torturous twisted knot for 2 nights in a row...

Anyway long story short, back to sketching!

Apologies to those waiting... anyhoo here's the sketch:
