Quote:Some possible reasons include:Here's a question then. If they really are deciding to part ways with CoH because of money problems, wouldn't it be in their best interests then to SELL it to someone for whatever the cost they could get for it rather then just eating it and closing the game down? I mean it WOULD make sense to do that!
1.) They tried, and no one was willing to buy it (at least for a price they'd consider acceptable... CoH the IP still has value for them, even just sitting on it).
2.) They weren't expecting it to come to this, and by the time they realized they'd need to get rid of Paragon, there simply was no time to spend possibly months looking and negotiating.
3.) Their agreement with Cryptic (now PWE) would introduce complications, such as them not being able to further resell the IP/engine, or PWE would have to approve the buyer getting the engine.
4.) They didn't need the additional money beyond what they'd get by killing Paragon, so they're going to keep the IP around to see what they can do with it later.
5.) Maybe they plan on doing an APB, and selling it once they're done closing up shop. Take their time, and get the biggest buyer.
6.) Similar to 3, but maybe they don't even know if they could legally sell it, and are still trying to consult with their lawyers.
These are just a few I thought up off the top of my head. Are any of these the situation? Who knows. But people seem to be extremely uncreative when it comes to trying to figure out the motivations of others. -
It would be freeing up "$4 million" to use somewhere else (as opposed to the "$1 million" of profit), somewhere that they consider they could get a higher return on investment, or to handle the $6 million loss they suffered last quarter. It's freeing up resources.
We don't know what their actual motivation was, so we can't actually say whether it was a good decision or not (hell, it may have been the best of a bunch of bad options for all we know). Without actually knowing what's going on, you have no way of actually knowing whether it was a stupid move, or if it just saved countless more people their jobs. -

Quote:Extremely doubtful. EA (which is pretty much universally loathed) is still going quite strong, despite countless attempts to boycott them for quite heinous actions. If the boycott of NC is as effective as the boycott of EA, all the people that have been shouting the loudest to boycott them will be going out and buying Guild Wars 2 fairly soon. The boycott stuff was actually started by other people on FB and in game, not me. I just postd it there. It might actually work though. Light a fire under their ***.
Before burning the bridges, it'd be better if we tried to focus on crossing them (i.e. supporting Tony's efforts to get NCSoft to sell the IP and/or the code).
Quote:It is true if they close 1 game they'll do the same to others. -
Because then they'd have just been blowing money. How many people do you really think would stick around once people realized that we were going to get less than the days of the Freem Fifteen? It'd also largely kill the hybrid model, because without new items being released, that would quickly dry up as revenue stream... so either they'd quickly approach making $0 (gross, not net), or have to return to being sub only (which would also be bad for PR).
-
I really don't think the focus should be one trying to tell people to boycott NCSoft... It'll merely make you sound bitter (referring to the thread created by Moonfyire101, which is the only thread I see at all related to this topic).

Check out Tony's thread Meanwhile, in the Halls of Titan....

I know who it is! It's MEEEEEEEEEEEE!
(Sorry, Net, if I just made everyone on the forums hate you and want to burn your house down!)

Nemesis. The Devs had just posted teaser images of giant Nemesis machines. And, as we know, Nemesis distracts the heroes at a moment that's crucial to the success of the Battalion.

Quote:Normally such threads get removed pronto. Seriously, you think a thread like that would be left around be our mods? Of course not! For one, you're talking about an outside game... secondly, you're asking if they're involved with killing another game... thirdly, I'm fairly certain their mods would have no clue either way anyways. It's not like PWE executives are the ones that personally moderate the forums!I've already taken the liberty of confronting them on the STO forums over it and the thread never got deleted. Normally if it is true and they have something to hide, such threads get removed pronto. Of course, situation could change, I was expecting a ticking off from the STO mods over it.
At this point, all the calls for boycotts are just knee-jerk reactionary. We don't have any real information. We have lots of suggestions (even one by BaBs saying he wasn't aware of such a situation, but would ask Jack), but no definitive information. Starting a campaign to boycott NCSoft might also hurt any efforts to save CoH, which certainly isn't a good thing... -
CoH doesn't have a strong overlap with their other products. NCSoft is big in Asia. CoH was a complete and total failure in Asia. CoH was also very small compared to their other games (unfortunately).
There might be a little erosion of the 'value' of virtual currency... but that's only assuming people intentionally keep large amounts of money in that virtual currency for extended periods of time. I'd imagine the most common situation is to never have more than a few dollars in the currency at a time just sitting around (if there's more, it probably is temporary because a purchase is about to be made), so the 'durability' isn't an especially large factor that's intrinsic to the currency. The durability of the MMO itself, I'd wager, continues to be more significant. Screw the virtual goods, it's the hundreds to thousands (if not tens of thousands) of hours spent playing the game that matters more to people.
There's already been many MMOs that have closed, including ones larger than CoH. Again, CoH is much smaller than NCSoft's other games, including Aion... so most people probably probably won't have their position on NCSoft moved at all... after all, they already had a reputation for killing underperforming MMOs, rather than running them for all of eternity.
Quote:Making a decision isn't necessarily a good thing if it's a bad decisionMore like "long enough not to do serious damage to your company currency." But that's really beside the point. The company has shown its hand. Its virtual products are of lower value than I originally anticipated. Shame on me for buying them. I won't make the same mistake twice. As someone who seems keenly interested in actors making self-interested decisions that should delight you. I, like NCSoft, am capable of making decisions about my financial situation and where I am willing to risk an investment. If you thought your stuff would be around forever... well, you obviously weren't familiar with NCSoft's long established track record, nor do you value the time you got with the goods already (a minimum of three months for the MOST RECENT items).

How would you have preferred it to go down?
That they stop development. And then sometime later, tell us as they pull down the servers? We're getting three months before they shut down the servers, which is quite a bit of time still.
Edit:
Quote:Ah, so you wanted them to fire Paragon, and not tell us. Then it would have been perfectly fine. If they had shut down the servers yesterday, I'd say you'd have a case for 'unethical'... but they're not for three months.I didn't ask for the game to stay open indefinitely. I did say that I think selling a powerset 10 days before announcing a shut down of the game is pushing the edge of unethical behavior. Whether it crosses a legal threshold or not is completely irrelevant. The fact that some businesses would do the same thing is also irrelevant. Some businesses are willing to screw their customers. These are usually businesses I avoid. End of discussion. -
That story is why all Q&A people should always have FRAPs running! And a YouTube account...

Quote:So you're saying NCSoft should have continued paying a bunch of people, while telling them to not work?
If NCSoft intended to pull the plug, that is when they need to tell the developers that they should be dialing back services. -

I'm also going to have nightmares -

What she meant was: "I am special exception, Killer Kitty, not someone super [snip]". (commas added) She was saying 'Killer Kitty' to signify that she was addressing KK.
