  1. Well I gave up Fireball (you weren't gonna use ring of fire and fire blast anyway right? especially with blast slotted like that) but... Better def overall including f/c and e/ne and much better recovery (I think more hp too).

I lost some recharge so maybe this gives you some ideas, but it's not exactly a great effort. Just woke up lol.

    Advice on EM/EA

Yeah Chain Induction is a sweet power, just try not ho kill your target with it and it will jump to other mobs.

Grounded only raises your energy and negative resists. Your energy resists will be capped without it on DOs anyway, no need for enhancing Grounded for that, but with my suggestion you'd lose a bit on negative.

    With your slotting: s/l 53.8% , nrg 75% (capped) , negative 35.2%

Swapping Tough and Grounded slotting: s/l 58.7%, nrg 75%, negative 32% (plus Tough will cost less end with the Reactive Armor set)

Fire, Cold and Psionic resists remain the same.

I'd wager it's an artifact of your "crappy" video card not being able to run a fullscreen application in the background (especially if the fullscreen application is a different resolution as your desktop). Try running the game in windowed mode instead and it should work better for you.

I'm not sure how you have your installation set up, but this is the general shortcut you can use to make CoH open in windowed mode:
    "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\cohupdater.exe" -fullscreen 0
Thanks for the shortcut, I'll try it. Yup I run at the same res as my desktop, 1680 x 1050.
  4. Well if you want to live in Granite...

I made this build. More HP than yours, much less end usage (no weave), 90% s/l resists, you run almost as fast in Granite as a normal toon with sprint (you don't need to turn rooted on all the time in Granite anyway except when you need the regen or after romulus rezzes), you actually do decent damage, and you get to keep your best attack, M. Grasp (although I wouldn't lot Siphon Life like I did here, but it's great for survivability). F/C isn't capped but I never found it necessary.

If you like it you can modify it since you may want to get some psionic def/res, but I think this build is extremely survivable (and even mobile) in Granite.

  5. Oh I'm using the crappy intel gma 950 card, with the latest drivers (I rechecked).

Actually when I press the 'windows' key the start menu flashes, meaning it does switch programs (same with alt-tab) but the CoX window still remains in 'front' so that I can't mess with other programs. The start menu just 'flashes' for a second when I try to access it with the win key. And no task bar.

But well... I ran CoX 5 times tonight and quit because of this issue. The 5th time I was able to get it running properly, with alt-tabbing and windows key working and everything was fine.

Windows is weird. I use my windows XP partition just to play the game (I also have other stuff like Mids, Firefox and antivirus), because my main stuff is on my Mac OS X partition. I can't run the Mac client because the game becomes a slideshow (since the game emulated in the Mac version, not a proper port like WoW which runs smoothly on my Mac - the winxp client runs very well but the CoX mac client requires a higher end Mac to run decently).

Thanks for the replies! I hope CoX stops this weird behavior like it did after I ran it after 5 times lol. After I crashed at WW (common occurrence here) I ran it again and it worked fine too.

    Advice on EM/EA

You wrote EM/EA, that may make some people not even click the thread thinking it's an Energy Melee/Energy Aura Brute advice request (yeah there are a lot of requests for other ATs in this forum). Next time write ELM/ELA

Well... Builds looks solid. I'd get L. Field at 24, 30 at max, because it helps your damage output so much. I'd also NEVER get Power Sink later than 35, especially since you got so many end heavy toggles before PS, that's a problem if you exemp.

I also would replace your Grounded slotting with Tough and ditch Havoc Punch and get Chain Induction.

With your huge melee def and good recharge I don't think you need Hasten.
  7. Well I'm trying to figure out regen (playing my first regen toon now, and she's a Stalker). I'd go for some regen bonuses, but melee and ranged def as well. I just threw this together in 10 minutes, tried to go for +maxhp as well but I don't think the build is very good in that regard, and maybe ranged def could be better, like 20%+:

  8. Before my 1.5 year break, CoX sometimes ran in a way that it didn't let me alt-tab to other programs like Firefox, Mids, etc. I couldn't make the game window 'go away' with alt-tab or opening the start menu with the windows key. When it happened, I just exited and relaunched the game and it was okay again, normal alt-tabbing so I could go to Firefox or other program when I was loading in a zone, check Mid's so I could see what power I planeed to pick and stuff.

I played about 5 times since I returned and it was okay.

I haven't played in a bit, like 1 week, and there were some Windows XP updates. Now everytime I run the game, the thing I related happens. The 'game loading' screen appears in front of all others, alt-tab doesn't help, and the only way I can return to my other programs is by exiting the game.

I verified files and nothing. Is there a solution to this?

I'm running Windows XP SP3 on a core duo 1.66 computer that always ran CoX smoothly.

    Thanks in advance!
  9. I agree with Silas. I LOVE the look of Energy Blast, so I made an Energy/Cold Corr and when teaming, I used to think 'Should I use Energy Torrent now? Damn if I had gone Fire I would just throw Fireballs indiscriminately'. And later I though 'Damn when I get sleet my blasts and AoEs will KB mobs out of it'.

So I deleted him (never made the Fire/Cold tho). I think I'll roll an Energy Assault Dom because it doesn't have AoE KB (I think, I'm on a Mac now so no Mids), but for now I'm a bit tired of ST damage specialists (Nrg Assault only has W. Hands).

    • A tier 9 power that is essentially useless if softcapped
    while Shield gives:
    • Around 2/3 as much defense and defense debuff resist
    • Full-time resists roughly equal to what SR gets at 40% health
    • Significant +damage and a minor damage debuff
    • A team +defense aura
    • An extremely good AoE attack
    • A good tier 9 power that stacks very well with softcapped defense
Comparing those two lists, SR had better have a lot better defense than Shield (which it does, with SOs) to make up for the fact that Shield offers a lot more things. Shield is pretty much the highest damage defensive set a Tanker can get, while SR would be one of thel lowest... it would only be fair for SR to have significantly better protection. I really can't see a straight port of Brute Super Reflexes to Tankers as unbalanced.
Shields gives a great buff for Tankers in True Grit too, +maxhp.
  12. Dark Armor/Stone Melee - you can ignore minions with oppressive gloom and the blaster can unload his AoEs on them with no fear, you get Fault so you can stun the whole world combined with OG, and you can insta-hold a boss with S. Smash, besides having very good ST damage for a Tanker and a damage aura.
  13. Since I posted this in another thread...

I think that FA's radius should match Foot Stomp's and GIS should use Clobber's damage/rech/end numbers. This way Ice Melee would have a hard hitter, but not a KO Blow/S. Smash potency power.

Look here. The OP is trying to min max his DM SD to the fullest and there are lots of replies.
  15. Oh thanks for correcting me Fulmens. I left a few days after i14, the order was top-to-bottom. I didn't really pay attention since I came back because I only logged like 5 times and all Freedom/Virtue. I guess it happened in 2009, I was still active for some time but I didn't play.

And yeah, there's a big difference between #2 (Virtue) and #3. I played some in Justice which used to be #3 for me and the channels there were kinda busy but I was on a special Repeat Offenders Team and didn't try to group there at first. When I made a toon there and tried to PuG later I found it a bit hard to assemble/get teams at odd hours (teaming in Justice at peak hours was easy in my limited experience tho, I just found the large number of blind invites weird, this rarely happened to me in F/V).

Also I found such a huge difference redside between Freedom and Virtue that I never tried to make a villain anywhere else because I was afraid I'd be in a ghost town. Well there was the STRONG AND PRETTY superteam in Infinity but it disbanded after level 8ish.
  16. Had a LOT of playtime with an Ice/Psi (took her to 50 before XP smoothing and then 3 months or so to make her permadom - when permadom meant you did decent damage all the time).

Running AA 24/7, no stamina ever. Never missed it. DP was slotted for healing (final slotting: 1 acc+5 Doct Wounds), because you get so much recovery from it already, I capped my recovery numerous times without endmod slotting. I had aid self too but didn't use it much after IO'ing her, I used it quite a bit before because I was very aggressive with her since SOs, some game buddies said I was an aggro machine, DP slotted for healing let me take lots of alphas.

I only had some end problems in those missions where when you die, you get imprisoned and you have to break a door (I turned AA off on those occasions of course), but maybe it won't be so bad now that doms had their damage buffed, haven't played her since i13. And even staminaless I've duoed AVs with another /psi dom in some patron arcs.

I only got stamina later (after permadom, after all the IOs) because I decided to PvP with her, or else I wouldn't have bothered.

    Of course YMMV.
  17. Thank you very much. I've read that H. Punch is better and Charged Brawl is only the best option at very high levels of recharge but from Mids/CoD it looks like CB is better all around.

    Oh boy aren't you lost

Do this: run the game, enter you password, and click on a really low pop server (like Pinnacle or Triumph - I'm not bashing on the servers). Then at the character selection screen, return to the server screen.

Now, the list that appears will be the order of the server's population at the moment, except the first place which will be the one you last logged in.

So if you logged in to Pinnacle and came back to the server selection screen, Pinnacle will be #1 and then the rest will be ordered by population. So you'll see something like this:

    Pinnacle
    Freedom
    Virtue
    Justice
    Infinity

Meaning (in the example) Freedom is #1, Virtue #2, Justice #3 and Infinity #4 in player numbers at the given moment.

I haven't paid attention since I came back (I played so little since I returned ) but for me, in 25 months before I took a break, Freedom was always number 1, Virtue was always 2, and usually Justice or Infinity took the third spot.

Lol, sorry for derailing with the Ice Melee stuff.

/Dark is very easy to farm because with just oppressive gloom you can ignore the minions until you kill the lts (you're not gonna farm bosses with spines right?), but you may have end issues. It would be the easiest to farm but the hardest to properly IO.

/Fire has a so-so end recovery tool, and you'll need to find the balance on how much you can survive between the use of Healing Flames. After you find it, it's all good. And it has Fiery Embrace which boosts your damage aura and fire attacks for a decent time, and other attacks for a shorter period. Fire's damage aura also is the most damaging of them all, not a huge difference but it's there. Plus you can use Burn as mitigation if you get in trouble or as a damage tool with impale' immob or some other immob/hold in the epics.

/Elec is worth mentioning. Capped energy resistance, a passive recharge bonus which lets you attack more often and the best end recovery tool. But the self-heal is on a long recharge compared to the other two, so the 'balance' of surviving between the heals will be harder to find. This can be alleviated by IO'ing for 30-35%ish melee defense (or typed like s/l but I prefer positionals on most toons).

Personally I'd go dark but I'm partial to dark armor, I just love it. For speed, assuming you don't have any survivability issues, fire or elec would be faster, but I don't think there would be a lot of difference.
  20. So I'm gonna roll an ELM/something (probably Nin or EA) Stalker and I'm wondering what would be the best pick for leveling and later in a build with, say, 50% global rech, out of these two. I'm asking in the scrapper forums because you guys are the attack chain experts and the Stalker forums are kinda abandoned, poor Stalkers

I have a 50 elm/stone brute that I took C. Brawl for obvious reasons (Granite) but looking at the numbers I can't tell which is better for a build with no penalties as easily as I can see that Hack is better than Slash and GC is better than Sting of the Wasp. I *think* C. Brawl looks better but not sure. I'm making an ELM Stalker because I love the set's looks but I hated it on the Brute due to poor st (so scrappers are out of the question too), maybe the fact that I'll have A. Strike and Thunderstrike crits after L. Rod not unhiding me makes me enjoy the set.

Or do they get crits without hide?

*I know nothing about stalkers but didn't think they were the highest damage of the AT's outside of burst. I might be tempted into rolling one if they do come out top (Though I hate all AS animations).
The 31% crit chance (assuming 7 teammates on a 30' radius) is OUT of Hide. Stalkers, out of hide, have a 10% chance to crit plus 3% for every teammate in the 30' radius, so in the best case scenario they have a 31% crit chance.

When attacking from Hide or after Placating a target (provided you don't get hit by another mob before you attack right after placating), the Stalker always has a 100% chance to crit, except on AoEs. Spine Burst has a 30% crit chance from Hide (according to CoD) and One Thousand Cuts has 50%. Thundestrike is weird, the smashing portion has a 100% chance to crit from hide and the energy portion 50%. But ST attacks like Midnight Grasp, charged brawl, etc, all have 100% crit chance when the Stalker is hidden.

Having said that, yeah, there's no way a Fire/Ice tanker even belongs in a farm discussion w/Fire/Kin's or Spines scrappers. SD/ELM might not be too bad, since the 2 pseudopets are almost scrapper-level, and it'd be more survivable than the ELM/SD equivalent. SD/SS wouldn't exactly suck either w/Rage+AAO+FS/SC. Still, I wouldn't farm w/a tank, esp since you can cherry pick mobs to face.
Yup, I think Ice Melee's AoE damage is not that hot even talking about Tankers and it should be buffed (yeah, again). I think it pays too much to be more 'controllerish' than other sets. Frozen Aura pales before Rage-fueled Footstomp (since you won't have BU all the time with FA, and the radius is smaller, should be the same imo). A Fire/Fire has great AoE in Combustion + FSC which has the same radius as Frozen Aura (and you can still get BoF if you like it) and the damage boost from Fiery Embrace helps Fire Melee more than other secondaries. I'm not taking Ice Storm in consideration because any Tanker can get it, and I find Fireball much better since IStorm recharges in 120 secs base. And both SS and FM have great Single Target damage. And about the 'control' aspect of the set... Except from Ice Patch, what do you get from Ice Melee that's so special? SS and SM also have a hold, and both associated with the most damaging attacks on Tankers (and for mitigation SM has Fault which is perhaps as good as Ice Patch, I find it better - although SM's AoE is sucky but that's okay since it ha so much ST damage)

I would never farm with a Tanker either, but I think Ice Melee on scrappers wouldn't be a top option for farming. Sure it could farm (my DB/Elec can at a reasonable pace too, and DB can also take down bosses moderately fast). Scrappers have Spines (Spine Burst, Throw Spines, second damage aura in Quills, and has a hard hitting attack), Elec (as you said, telenuke, and thunderstrike helps a lot too, chain induction is not bad either, the set lacks a hard hitter tho), and of course Fire Melee which is just insane on a Scrapper, especially for farming with bosses - great and fast ST chain, FSC).

Not saying Ice Melee is a bad set, I just think it deserves some more loving like upping the radius of FA and making GIS a high damaging attack, it has the same rech as Incinerate, costs more end and has a longer cast, dealing less damage. They could use Clobber's numbers for GIS for dmg, end and rech since comparing it to a Fire Melee attack might be 'unfair' since FM's secondary effect is extra damage.

Sorry, I posted a wall of text. Would be okay in a thread about Ice Melee but I got carried away.
  23. The regen/recovery bonus from the IO will work for 120 seconds after the power with it is activated, be it Energize, Aid Self, Healing Flames, anything that accepts the IO.

As long as you use Energize once every 120 seconds it will be perma (but the bonus won't stack, it will always be the same regen/recov values).

If you want the IO to work full time without worrying about anything like clicking Energize, put it in a passive power like Health, Physical Perfection, Fast Healing, True Grit (last two available for willpower and shields respectively, just giving examples)...

The problem is not your build, but that Energy Melee is one of the worst sets for farming. Anyway I'll try to build something when I get back from work, are Crushing Impacts, Doctored Wounds and 1-3 KB IOs in your budget?
