    Creative Funk

Tim "Talin" Collier, the Reapermini staff artist, uses what I use: The almighty disposable mechanical pencil. One of his dA pages.

So use your mechanical proudly. I like not having to stop and sharpen every few minutes. If you want line variation, you can always have an old wooden one standing by.

For some reason I saw this and thought "Baby Loony States."

It's a great piece and it's fun to see Statesman smiling for once.

    Creative Funk

I've been in a creative funk for... going on eight years now. I've done a few things here and there, and think I might be pulling out of it, then I get slammed harder.

Hopefully your problem isn't nearly as bad as mine.

    CSS Baby!!!

Nope. IE is the Spawn of Satan and if I could remove it from my machine I could.

    I use FireFox.

Viewing from my laptop, if I view the journal exclusively it looks correct, but from the homepage I get the three WIPs with a sliver of the fourth. I'll try to do some screenies later.

FYI, the desktop views at 1024x768. The laptop is 1280x800.

    CSS Baby!!!

The problem is I can't see one of them except for a teeny bit of the edge when I'm viewing just the journal. If I'm viewing your home page, I can see three WIPs, and the third is partially cut off.
  6. I thought TA was the definition of silly...
  7. Oh good grief. All comic companies were doing it. I recall several Spider-Man titles with different colored covers and different hologram images, the Death of Superman in the black plastic bag... they were all over the place with gimmicks and "KEWL" new things that the artwork went to complete crap. The covers would look awesome and the interior art was deformed and vile. The stories in many of them weren't even that good.

And sadly I still own many of them. Bagged and boarded, even.

    Tattooed TA?

My husband has a heart on one shoulder (about the size of a quarter), a vampire-goth chick on the other, a pegasus on his chest and a pair of wings on his back.

I've considered a tat, most likely the winged scarab of my dA avatar, but I'm rather squeamish about the whole cleanliness aspect of it.

    CSS Baby!!!

Very clean and easy to read, but your WIPs don't scroll for me. Just an FYI.

I always try to tell people they don't need a lot of crud all over their page to make it interesting. You need it to appeal to the eye and to draw the eye to the important bits (like your commissions). While a little crammed because of limited space, your page does what it needs to do.

    Tattooed TA?

I think this would make a great tattoo.

Okay guys, I rarely, and I mean RARELY laugh my booty off at anything I read online, but THAT was hilarious!

I was laughing so much my husband wanted to see what I was laughing at.
  13. I neither have an account on MySpace nor Facebook.

Won't ever get one either. Ahh well, I'm all for looking at newborn puppies and showing my son.
  14. It's not terribly advanced, and by getting a few, good fashion magazines you can get a feel for the flow and movement. It just takes making your eyes adjust beyond what we normally glance at and noticing things like the play of light and shadow on the material, how the folds arch and swirl, where the shadows hit, and how the highlights define the cloth. This is especially true of such cloth as silk, velvet, and taffeta as well as the difference between rough, smooth, and patent leather.

There is also added benefit for hair in these magazines, since oftentimes it can be strangely coiffed.

    I got new art!

It's not the clothing but the content of the image. Highly suggestive. It's definitely not appropriate for where I work, and neither are the VS catalogs.
  16. I want the inside jokes!

"You dropped your film? I'm sorry, but your pictures will come out blurry unless you pay extra for the focusing fluid." (we actually had a new employee going for a while thinking there was such a thing)

"I want to speak to the manager! I am the manager. You're not the manager! Here's your da.. money! Thank you, have a nice day! Don't tell me to have a nice day, I wasn't nice to you!" (true story about customer who tried to walk out without paying for her pics because she was too busy flipping through them to pay)

"I need these in an hour. Okay, they'll be ready at 3pm. It's only noon! Yeah, but your hour doesn't come up until 2pm." (It was the day after Christmas and pre-digital era, they were lucky to get the pictures the same day)

Sorry, I was a lab manager for far FAR too long...

Sorry I couldn't post everything I had planned to this morning, but it was in between getting ready for work and getting the kids up and dressed and I ran out of time. I always try and give good points along with suggestions, so here's the good:

Your doing really well starting out, better than I was. Your poses, even if not quite "there" yet, are dynamic and you're making an excellent attempt at invoking mood, movement, and personality. You have the feel, now you just need to practice and learn some technique. This is where the suggested anatomy books come in.

In addition to anatomy, though, it helps to learn how clothing fits and falls. You have a great beginning grasp, now go the cheap route and learn how different material falls and drapes. Get yourself some magazines; I recommend Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Details. I'll generally get them and then go through them and tear out the pages I like, recycling the rest. I keep the pages in a folder for references. This can also help you learn anatomy and give you poses that you don't often see in the anatomy books.
  18. A very basic and extremely helpful starting place: How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way

It does very basic instruction, but it teaches a LOT. It's a great starting off place for anyone, then you can jump into the more in-depth anatomy books.

This one is good because it includes tracing paper and material aimed at beginners.

There are a lot of anatomy books out there and some aren't so great. If Lady Judgement sees this hopefully he'll recommend some great books (he has quite a few and I can't remember them all).
  19. My hubby adores Slapstick as well, and Sleepwalker.

I'm going to vote for Magik as well, Ricochet Rita (the previous incarnation of Spiral), and Moon Knight.

I'd also like to see Caliban and Tommy from the Morlocks, and Arclight.
  20. Yeah, Sin, I was going to get all upset and offended, then decided not to. I'm a writer and an artist. I also appreciate other writers and artists (especially when they don't go overboard with the commas and check their grammar).

Yes, I'd love to see the man-love gift art, just not on here, please.

    I happily share caramel corn.

And the best advice I can give anyone aspiring to anything is something Churchill said: "Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never--in nothing, great or small, large or petty--never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense."

Popcorn goes great with this thread....

I agree. Especially caramel popcorn. Yum!

Now if we just had some Jolt cola...
  22. I don't have a myspace account and have zero plans on getting one.

I've tried getting into steampunk, but I just can't find much of interest.
  23. How come I can never find an SG that doesn't make being a part of it a second job (besides the Envisionaries)?

Those are awesome pictures, and I found Pin-Up!

I love the Jolt Cola can. You nailed that one.

    The Foomeister strikes again!
