MMOART 2008
Happy New Year everyone! So here is my first post of the year. Looking back on the past 12 months, I must confess that my life has been riddled with a series of truly unfortunate events. Some were brought on by my own doing, and others were very much out of my control. Needless to say it has impacted my work and my family in ways that I am not accustomed to. For that I offer my most sincere apology, to both my clients and to my family.
In retrospect MMOART.com is your classic case of a business growing too fast too soon. If I was making hamburgers or building toasters, I could simply invest in more equipment to get the job done. I cant do that with my art because it would impact the quality and that is simply something I am not willing to do. With that being said I am willing to offer 3 options to my current clients and move forward from there. The idea is to get my queue to a manageable size and keep it there from here on out.
Option 1: Refund
If I have yet to start work on your art (meaning I have not yet sent you at least a rough draft) then I will refund your 50% deposit. This may take a few weeks but I will be sure to get it to you as fast as possible.
Option 2: Balance
If I have already begun work on your piece, I will complete your piece to a stage that is equal to your deposit. This will release you from any further financial obligations outside of the shipping costs.
Option 3: Steadfast
For those who are really looking forward to having your commission complete and want to take advantage of what Im sure will be a smaller queue size. Then stick around and let me create a masterpiece for you. If your concept has evolved or you have completely moved on to another game then we can adjust your commission accordingly.
Please direct all emails concerning the above options to support@mmoart.com
I would like to thank you all for your support and understanding over the last few months. I hope that regardless of the option you choose that you will still stop by to check out the new art and say hello =)
Sincerely,
Jomaro Kindred (Gill Bates)
Owner/Art Director

Ah, sounds like Gill took on a bit too much (understandible considering unexpected delays). I'm glad that he's come out and said "hey, if you're not up for waiting anymore, you can have your deposit back".
For some reason though, I don'tthink many people will bite on this. I think people just want their art done fast... and in this case, it doesn't seem possible.
Personally, what I would do if I was Gill in this position... put a hold on accepting more (for a few months) and clear off the backload. His demand would still be there when he opened the flood gates once again. -

Not so much that he's slow Cold Heritage, he's just so far behind. People have literally had to wait a couple of years and with his long list of clients that's just too long of a wait for me to sit with comfortably when you have to pay up front.
[/ QUOTE ]
I think he's worth the wait, personally. But then again, I'm biased.
[/ QUOTE ]
Always loved that pic. -
Ah, good to hear.
Can't wait to see the piece. -
Aye, I'd at least like to know how he's doing and such. Personally, I've never gotten any art from him... but I've been mulling it over for a while. I'd love to see his take on Juggertha.
That being said, there's no way I'm patient enough to sit on a list for a year (after paying?).
Again, I think Gill's cool... and I think he's got a gold mine here in what he's doing. I just hope he hasn't taken his eye's off the ball. -
Yup, you've found the right forums man.
But not all Anime around here... many different styles. -
[ QUOTE ]
Well, a paying customer will always come first to most big name artists. The contest winners will get something eventually, but it could take years. I know many people are having issues getting in touch with them, including paying customers.
[/ QUOTE ]
Gill is a great guy... and there is no question that his art is top bar...
but nothing of the sort should take "years". -
Hold on guys.. I'm not sure of the specific details for Japan, but I do know how it is in other parts of Asia.
1. If you don't have a University degree (much less a high school diploma) very few places will hire you. In fact, for you to qualify for a work visa teaching, you generally have to be accredited.
2. If you are charging for a service, don't you think you should be qualified? What age range do you plan to teach? what experience do you have? what qualifies you to teach other than growing up with English as your first language?
These are all questions you should be asking yourselves.
3. Japan has a relatively high start up cost. You may want to consider other countries in Asia that provide housing.
4. Japan (and Asia) are not always easy to "stomach". Some people move here and love it, others come here and quickly realize it's not for them. Before you go talking about getting citizenship in a country (which is a MAJOR step), you might want to try living there for a while.
*Just some advice from someone who has been there. -
I've been wondering what's up with them lately.
-
NOVA (an agency/employer) just collapsed leaving thousands of teachers out of work. So, if I were you, I'd hunt for discussion forums relating to living/working in Japan to find out how the current situation is.
Good luck though, I moved to Korea 6 years ago and have yet to go back to the Great White North. -

I think the major issue at play here is that people signed up to do art about City of Heroes and the first thing that happened is that the subject matter isn't about City of Heroes. Of course it's gonna be offputting to a lot of people. Moreso, if they're either not fans of the show, or not knowledgeable about it in the first place.
[/ QUOTE ]
If people signed up to do CoH art ONLY, then they were mistaken. I do not believe I ever said that this would be CoH art ONLY. It was a FAN ART contest ... and this topic relates to both Heroes and Fan Art.
[ QUOTE ]
But it's Juggy's art competition and his call to pick the topic. You either abide by it or get out of the water. However, this goes both ways. Don't put anyone down for wanting out of it, when an obvious bait and switch was pulled. This is not a paid commission. This is not a job. This is something that's supposed to be FUN and if it's not fun for those people, then let them leave without making them feel inferior.
[/ QUOTE ]
Now this is where you step over the line into trolling. Calling what I did as a 'bait and switch' is casting doubt on my honesty here. That phrase is usually used for crooked salesmen and advertisers - but you've chosen to use it on me.
You've come to my threads before and tried to argue your case... even though this is a peaceful forum, you seem bent on making sure everyone agrees with you - whether it be your opinion on my art, or now the fact that I'm somehow dishonest.
If you don't like my art - fine, don't comment on it. It's no loss to me.
If you don't like this contest - fine, don't join. Oh wait, you haven't joined. So you're here stiring things up (and yes, saying that about me is definately looking for trouble), yet you're not even involved in the contest.
You may say you're just a concerned member of this community, but hurling personal insults... sounds like trolling in my books.

I'd say that while the show 'Heroes' is definitely SuperHero related, it's not 'City of Heroes' related. While it's a parallel topic, it's not actually the same. I agree that it's an interesting challenge and that it's likely worth looking into, but there are obviously people that are unhappy with it. Asking them to suck it up and deal is acceptable in a commission world, but this simply a fun diversion, not a paid project. Just let them leave the competition peacefully and you'll be left with a more tightly knit group of people that enjoy it, rather than people that feel put off by the subject change.
[/ QUOTE ]
Anyone who is unhappy with it is welcome to bow out. Heck, I even said that if a good portion do, we can call the whole thing off (obviously, if there are a number of people unhappy with it, I've done something wrong).... BUT, ONE PERSON HAS BOWED OUT. And that person gave scheduling conflicts as their reason.
Suichiro, I know what you're going to do here - you're going to continue to post your point and argue away no matter what. I've seen it beforewhen you wanted to critisize my art.
I asked you then to kindly not post any more comments on my art as they are not welcome.
Now it seems that you've found another direction in which to troll.
The best way to deal with trolls is not to feed them, so this post will be your only thingto snack on. I will respond no further to you.
To be clear to everyone else though..
-This contest IS meant to be fun, and I worry that any massive amount of arguing might take away from that. Let's try not to k.
-I never meant for this contest to be CoH exclusive. I meant, and posted as such, for it to be based on these forums and Fan Art.
-I honestly expected people to come with a variety of pieces for the challenges. Heck, I'm expecting to see morphed screenshots and Peanuts cartoons as well.
-There are a few people who want into the contest, so if you have to bow out - feel free. I initially gave a heavy descriptive warning about how long this contest may be (so as to catch only people who would like to be in it for the long run), but looking at it now, it'll last for around 6 months. If you're good and lucky, you'll make it to the finals, if not, you can cheer along with everyone else.
-If anyone feels I've been dishonest with this contest, please take it to a PM and we can discuss it. This contest is being run by me, myself, and I. If there's a question of honesty, it'll ruin the fun.
Good luck to all, and just a reminder, you've got about 25 days left -
Just so everyone is clear, HERE is the original description of the FArt Wars Contest.
-
It's hard to be one of the first posting though, so many people can end up raising the bar by the end.

Honestly, anyone who is coping out because they've never watched the show is being a little weak about this.

Copping out? Not a Chance.

Woah, now the gauntlet has been thrown down.
Nice job man. -
Grats Dirtwolf.
And great issue guys! -
Either one of these boys would be happy to make the Scoop.

Think of it as a learning experience for commisions that you can only get a description and maybe a picture.
[/ QUOTE ]
EXACTLY.
Heck, sometimes there's not even a picture. -
[ QUOTE ]
it more the fact that juggy said something about charater development and cliffhangers. and for someone who dosen't know what's going on...
it would be like if i drew states man and Black widow fighting .... dark elves. and states man unleashes with his super mind attack. and black widow grew 120' and lighting bolt came out of her head.
i'm just going to have to read up. wish i learned how to read.

Ok then, let's go with a similar example.
I ask you to draw the characters of Gilligan's Island as Superheroes using whatever medium you like. I also add that you can use the fact that they're trapped on an island.
I provide youthis link and tell ya to have fun.
Now, you may have never watched the show, but after taking 10 minutes to read the info page on Wiki, you'd have a pretty good idea of the story and characters.
Honestly, anyone who is coping out because they've never watched the show is being a little weak about this.
Keep in mind that not all commissions/art projects allow you the luxury of "knowing" your topic deeply - sometimes you've just got to go with what you've got.
((Come on people, read the wiki link, ask questions, find answers. It may be harder than just giving up, but you'll grow from it))
