I spent most of my time during the 2xp weekend taking a fire/traps corrupter to level 30. I read several guides about traps, all of which commented on the -regen portion of Poison Trap as a great advantage when soloing AVs or GMs. I just got spanked by my first AV today (not surprising, still no IO sets) but the -regen didn't seem to be very effective during the 45 seconds it took me to face-plant.
I just took a closer look at the power and the description says it lowers regen for just 10 seconds even though it has a long recharge! Am I missing something? Why would all these guides talk about the -regen component when it last for a few seconds? -
Quote:RagManX, I am little surprised you are not familiar with the arguments why this would not work. The two main ones are:This is such an excellent suggestion. Why aren't more people supporting this idea? I, for one, have been asking for years now for exactly this. My suggestion is 100 million, although a few genius others suggest 10M or even 1M as the cap.
RagManX
1) People would just sell everything really valuable outside of Wentworths.
2) Popular items that people sold within Wentworths would quickly get bought up. Then instead of not getting them because they cost too much, you couldn't get them because they weren't available. You are replacing one problem for another, while effectively penalizing the people who put time and effort into making Inf.
People keep trying to invent ways to stop a limited number of rare items from having a high price. Good luck with that. -
Many computer RPGs have the same inflated price differences between the lower and higher levels. When you first start out the higher level equipment seems to have impossible prices. Clearly the designers who are setting these numbers are thinking very abstractly.
I must have played a dozen games where you go into the first store and see something like this
Terrible dagger (level 1): 5 copper pieces
Poor dagger (level 5): 10,000 silver pieces
Average Dagger (level 10): 1,000,000,000 jewel-encrusted platinum mega-pieces
CoX is no exception, and I can see why new players would balk at some of the prices they see in the market. It's a good thing that "Inf" is an invisible, intangible non-money thing, or we would need big animated wheelbarrows in the game to cart it around. -
I think it would be easier for us to give feedback if you said more about how you plan to play this character and what you are trying to accomplish. Your defense seems rather low if you plan on soloing much, but if you are primarily acting as a support character this might not make a difference.
There also look like a few oversights--I notice that you have 6 endurance enhancements in Stamina. I would expect to see just 3 in there if you don't want an IO benefit, or to have actual IOs in there from a set if you plan to 6-slot it. -
Hmm, I will take a look at sonic/rad. I suspect that it would be better for the AV soloing and more safe than fire overall.
So far I am enjoying fire because of its high AoE damage. In large groups the xp gain rate of fire is so high that even though I die more occasionally the debt is not a problem.
This shows me that my goal of not dying much is not as high a priority as I thought. Mowing through foes like death incarnate is more like it. -
I don't think that's a very accurate way of describing the market. The market has very clear and easy to see patterns which are not at all chaotic. A few of those are:
1) Items cost more during weekends and on special events.
2) It is usually cheaper to buy a recipe and salvage than it is to buy the finished enhancement.
3) Prices are inflating as increasing amounts of Inf go into the system.
Every one of these patterns can be used to make money, if that is your goal.
I suspect that what you mean is something closer to “I did not understand why prices fluctuated a lot for some items when I looked at the last five sold.” That’s different. You do realize that some people like a bargain and are willing to wait, while others are in a hurry and pay higher prices, right?
What did you think was chaotic?
Quote:Then it hit me, may this is the only way it can be when players don't know the basic of economy. There is no way to fix it.
What do you think would happen if the players did know the basics of economics? -
Thanks for the comments. The fire/traps is going very well and looks like what I want right now. Unfortunately since I play almost exclusively solo I don't have anyone to pl me to 32. However, I am finding that a fire/anything corrupter is able to use the methods from MA farming even at a low level in Praetoria. You can buy medium purples, and with two of those you are at the def cap. If the mish is set to -1 / X8 you can farm the first few rooms and then reset. It’s a little tedious, but more reliable than the PUGs I’ve been in recently.
Well, anything at X8 is not really “tedious” but it does get repetitive.
I find it interesting that there are very few guides to traps corrupters or defenders. The MM guides are written from a very different perspective than we have. -
I just took a fire/rad to 20 and he was a lot of fun, but now that I am in Paragon City he is getting mezzed a lot. I just started a fire/traps and it looks like he might be better solo character. The fact he gets mez protection and +15% def means he should be a lot easier to softcap, and he'll have enough -regen to handle AVs. I sure miss the easy heal from rad, though!
-
Whoops, looks like I might have missed my chance. Oh well! I am certainly still interested if things don't work out with Exxcaliber.
-
Dirike, I play almost exclusively on Freedom. Thank you for your generous offer, and I would be honored to take over the SG. Is there a good time this evening or in the next few days that might work for you?
-
I am interested in trying out a Corrupter. I have Fire/Kin and Ill/Rad controllers, but Ive gotten tired of hiding behind pets and confusing my enemies. Id like to get into battle and do some direct damage myself for a change.
In descending importance, I would like to be able to:
1) Do good to excellent AoE damage and decent ST damage. I tend to play at -1/ X 2 or higher even at low levels.
2) Eventually be able to take on X8 maps.
3) Not die much, either by buffing myself or debuffing my foes
4) Solo AVs
I know that emphasizing AoE over ST damage goes against the goal of soloing AVs.
I have around 500 million in the bank and plan on getting lots of hero merits, so I can get LotG recharge and other middle-class enhancements. I might be able to afford purples someday.
After reading a number of posts I decided to go with fire/rad. I considered running a defender since they now get a 30% damage buff when solo, but since they dont have fire a corrupter seemed to be the better choice. I started this fire/rad last week and so far I have enjoyed him A LOT. Fireball and RoF for the good times! The to hit from radiation is effectively doing the same things as giving me +30 defense, so with just two purples I can nearly soft cap myself as long as I am careful with how I manage my anchors.
I was hoping this character might be my AV soloer, but I checked the math and learned that AVs have strong resistance to debuffs. As in, a level 50 AV will ignore 85% of the -to hit debuff, so that 30% debuff gets reduced to 4.5%. That suggests to me that staying alive while taking down an AV might be a real challenge.
I am considering rerolling him as fire/traps since traps has good regen, +def that can be soft-capped, and mez protection. Would a fire/traps fit my goals? Are there other builds that would do better?
I should mention that for some reason fire/dark is not very appealing to me. Maybe its the flavor-of-the-month aspect. If it really stands above other builds I would consider it.
I wish that dual pistols had more damage oomph and AoE effects at earlier levels because I like the way it looks and it fits with traps, but oh well.
What do people think? If fire/rad is an otherwise strong build I might get over my desire to solo AV and GMs, but theres something appealing about taking on the biggest challenges in the game single-handed. -
How do you survive? The -to hit from rad is so resisted that I'm not clear how you'd survive the attention an AV is likely to shower upon you. I was thinking that /traps might be better since you get a strong -regen along with mez protection and +def.

Thanks for the responses. I decided to alpha slot for +end and so far I've been happy. I still occasionally run into endurance issues when spamming AOE attacks at difficulty +2 / X8 so I am still undecided on whether I will respec into Fire. I suspect that I would need to take the difficulty down a little so each group doesn't take as long to eliminate.
-
I am really not sure what to put into the Alpha slot for my hero-side brute. Currently he has Energy as his Epic but I am open to changing. He is soft-capped on def for melee, not quite on range and AoE but he will be when I go through the second respec and buy a few more sets. Over the last month I have been buying LotG +recharge and the Numena and Miracle +recovery and regen so the brute is already a very reliable solo toon. Its really easy to keep a purple inspiration up at X6 .
Currently I am mainly soling missions on +1/X6, I could probably bump it up to X8 without it being much harder. I find when I get too many mobs around a hostage its almost impossible to SEE them so X6 seems to be the sweet spot.
I see three main options:
1) Stay with Energy for my Epic but go with Spiritual for the +recharge boost. The thing is, there is a diminishing rate of returns on +recharge and this toon already has a global recharge of about 35%. I would hate to slot this and find my AoE powers recharge .5 seconds faster.
2) Change my epic to Fire to get another AoE attack. In that case I would probably go with the Cardiac for the +endurance since I will be losing the benefits of the Energy epic power
3) Change to Fire, but go with Musculature for the +damage.
What are other people doing? I know that SS/Shield is a popular combo so I presume there are plenty of other players who have are facing this decision. -
Thank you, Deus, for this interesting build! I plan on making it the basis for my respec this week. And with Fitness being inherent there is now room to pick up additional powers that don't require much slotting like One with the Shield and Superspeed.
Is there any particular reason you picked Hurl over the other distance attacks available in the Energy epic power? -

Quote:St0ner, this thread has kind of died, but I think part of the problem is that there seem to be two different questions here. Are you asking for some good builds for soloing heroes/archvillians, or for soloing in general? Powersets with -regen really help when soloing an archvillian, but for the majority of the game -regen doesnt matter. Powersets like Super Stength have knockup capabilities that are fantastic against bosses but pointless against an AV since AVs almost always have knockup protection.Ok so stone armor is out. I'm not worried about leveling just want to be able to solo a hero or AV if I need to. Not even sure if it's possable but I wanna at least have the best build I can to give it a shot.
I would pitch Super Strength / Shield Defense as a great all-around solo brute with both excellent single target and AoE damage. But if I want to solo an AV I go get my Illusion/Radiation controller, rather than spend 30 minutes pounding on an AV trying to whittle its health down.
You might want to start a different thread with the subject "What brutes are good for soloing an AV." That will probably get a more focused response. I don't think I would try any version of a /stone brute for that purpose because even it's possible it would take a REALLY long time. -
I must say that Issue 19 has made me reconsider things like this. OwtS has the big advantage of not requiring many slots to be useful. I will probably take it as one of my three freebie powers when I respec this week.
-
Are you taking "One With the Shield" on your /shield brute? There are only two guides written since I13 on /shield, and those are both by the same person, so there's surprisingly little data here on the boards. He doesn't like the power, but I don't know.
If you have a reasonable global recharge (say, more than 25%, which I do) and Hasten then this might be an excellent damage mitigation power if you are fighting +1 or higher bosses that can be up most of the time. I'm torn between OwtS and taking Fireball. -
I think part of the problem is the really wide range of enjoyment levels when it comes to working the market. I have more than once told my wife I was logging in "for just 10 minutes" and spent an hour crafting and looking for deals. If I do that a lot the game feels more like shopping at a flea-market than it does like being a superhero. I happen to like shopping and making stuff, but I understand the people who don't.
That's another reason why farming a-merits is nice. I'm actually DOING MISSIONS instead of just sitting in Steel Canyon figuring out crafting profit margins. -
Quote:I don’t get a chance to run TFs either. I know the devs originally set them up so a group of people could agree to meet, say, for just one hour every Friday night and play together until the the TF was finished. I have never found anyone running a TF who didn’t plan to complete it that day.If you are saying you can do what I just described and deck out your toon at 50 with 'decent" sets, solely with the income that toon generated on the way to 50...then you must be a lucky man when it comes to drops. Oh, and I rarely do tf's as well.
In one SG I was in several people ran mainly TFs rather than missions, and one of them was quite confident that this is how most people play the game after their toon hits 50. He thought it was kind of funny and quirky that I wasn’t interested in grinding at 50 “since that’s how the game is designed to be played.”
My conclusion is that a lot of people naturally believe that however they are playing the game is the “normal” way or the “right” way. This gets reinforced by the fact you probably hang around with other people who play the game the way you do. It’s a compelling illusion, but an illusion none-the-less.
Quote:I frankenslot and pick interesting PROCs and uniques as well as aim at oddball and neglected sets with nice 2 & 3 set bonuses (of which there are quite a few).
Lascher, as you know we seem to agree on most things in this thread, but I do notice you seem to use the word “greedy” in a way that’s likely to get you into arguments on this board:
Quote:You know what, as long as their are greedy players that want all the inf in the world in their pockets, you will always need a ton of cash!!
I think an awful lot of these market arguments come down to whether you identify more with someone who is trying to buy or someone who is trying to sell. If you only buy stuff, then costs just seem like a burden. If you sell stuff, then costs are something people give you for your intelligence and time. -
Quote:That breaks it down fine, and I'm not a scientist either. ;-)Well, in written format, sarcasm doesn't translate well. Also, if the person is playing with friends of lower level, they can sell that lower level stuff. Also, if they do not enjoy playing the market, they were given other means to get these "shinies". Also, #4 goes along with #3. Also, #1 goes along with my "other ways to obtain the "shinies""explination.
Does that break it down enough for you. Damn it Jim, I'm doctor, not a scientist. -
Quote:I was confident that this opinion would be expressed soon, and here it is.If just simply playing the game and selling isn't working then you are doing it wrong.
I suspect, Sharker, that you do lots of little things to maximize the amount of cash you get. Thus getting money seems easy to you, and you imagine anyone else must be playing badly.
There are many of reasons a player might not be able to make the 500+ million to outfit a character with enhancements like LotG global recharge or +Recovery Numena. A few basic ones include 1) not having enough playtime, 2) not enjoying playing the market, 3) mainly doing missions with friends who are low-level characters, and 4) mainly playing characters who are less than level 50.
I understand you might be surprised to hear that someone who is doing missions and then selling their stuff doesnt make as much money as you normally see. But telling someone else they are doing it wrong makes it look like you simply are locked in your own limited perspective and confusing your opinion with objective fact. -
Lascher,
I agree, this is by far the easiest way for the average player to make cash right now. I notice that the alternatives other people mentioned might be better for experienced players and marketers, but your method is available to anyone who has managed to get a single toon to level 20. My 8-year old daughter understands how to run tip missions, and she's not going to be able to run TFs or work the market. I don't have time for TFs myself so a-merits have made it possible for me to finally outfit a hero with some of the better (non-purple) enhancements.
As for "play the game and sell your junk" I have been doing that for 7 years, but I found I was making cash at less than 1/10 the rate of a-merit farming. The one exception to that might be grinding my level 50 fire/kin through the same boring AE missions. Tips missions feel a lot more like being a superhero than grinding. -
Quote:I agree on the "if" part, but I can't think of anything the devs have said or done that suggests they feel any need to drain money out of the system as a way of dealing with inflation.Bingo.
In many ways, the pure flippers are supported by the farmers, and it's all driven by inflationary pressures. If/when they decide to drain the money out of the system, there are going to be some major shocks indeed.
What they seem to have done is to increase supply by making "upper middle-class" IOs like Numena and Miracle +Recovery available for just two A-merits. This effectively makes them much more available and therefor cheaper. I certainly was not able to afford them before without spending a lot of time playing the market, and now I can just for doing a few tip missions.
