Quote:I'd be much obliged, although it wouldn't be necessary since nearly every recipe on the market is under 100 inf.if you want free temp power recipes i can toss them your way since i usually end up deleting them anyway and i feel like i get them way too much lol

DAY 5
---
Yaaaay! Time for some Determination! I have accepted the challenge to do the Faultline arcs, you know, the ones riddled with bosses and elite bosses?
And yes, I do know that I'm more than likely gonna have to do these solo, unless some other Determinators decide to show up and help me out.
In other news, I have the surprising want to update Poor Prospect's costume to a Drop Squad uniform... -
Yikes! No updates all weekend! Sorry guys, I've been REALLY busy, and I haven't had time to Determinate (Yes, I just made that up) some baddies. If I can find some time today, then I'll do an official update
-
Which is why I'm thinking of making it a Firey Embrace kinda deal, but not as intense. The damage could easily be ramped up a tiny bit so it wouldn't need a real build up.
-
Quote:I'll start working on a revamped concept later. Now you're talkin.
That concept is intruiging, unique and usable for different concepts over claws or another bladed set...Something like Tipped Knife, with the concept of using foe specific toxins applied to the weapon.
You could even give it a swap ammo-esque gimmick in that it has 2 (or three) of these BU powers but using one makes the others expire and start recharging (so you could ever only use one). One could be 'Acid Tipped' that eats a foes armor (-res/-def), 'Poison Tipped' that swaps part of your lethal dmg for toxic, debuffs regen and a chance of toxic DoT. Maybe these powers can have a longer duration (15-20sec) but a smaller buff (30-40% dmg) to go along with their effects.
That's something different at least... -
Quote:I tried to avoid putting in a "Swamp Ammo"-type mechanic into the set. Well, now that I think about it, I guess I could revamp the set again... Buff the damage a bit, give it a real Build Up, but give the Build up a -res component and call it Poison...Never said it had to be sonic, it was just pointed out by the OP that the reason for -res was to get a melee counterpart to sonic's -res.
The set could have had a 'Corrosive Blade' power that specifically aimed to lower the foes resistance (a la Rib Cracker) or had a kind of swap ammo mechanic called 'Poisoned Tipped' that added a -res to the attacks. Then that would explain why a knife can lower resist and claws can't; because one is defined as poisoned tipped. It's not the fact that you could coat claws in poison to, it's the logic that both are sharp stabbing instruments used in a similar fashion but have completely different thematic effects. -
-
Quote:You know, I honestly forgot about running the Faultline arcs. Now THAT is a challenge that'll take some determination!Don't forget Faultline (for the Clockwork Pet), Croatoa (for the Sword and Bow temp powers), and LOTS of Safeguards, hoping you'll get the temp power side mission
.
Oh and I'd be interested how you get on with the Vahzilok Plague mission if you decide to run it at the appropriate level!
This sounds like a lot of fun. Like seeing tattoos on other people, they look nice but I wouldn't necessarily want one myself. When Freedom hits and I'm tempted to roll more alts, I may venture on to Virtue and check out the toon.
Are there any other 'challenges' apart from Iron Man/Woman / Determinator builds?
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED -
DAY 4 WRAP UP
---
After crafting my usual temporary powers, noting the dramatic decrease in price for a lot of things that I need (recipes, salvage, etc.), I headed out to finish my Midnighter arc. Threw on LFG, and posted in the Virtue LFG Beta channel using a different message from usual.
"Level 14 Determinator lft, blueside"
Now, I figured that enough people have seen this thread to know what that means, or that nobody really cared, but I got some tells of interest, people asking what I meant, and a lot of positive replies. It made me giddy.
Minutes later, someone was advertising for a Positron Part 1. Great! I can join this TF I've never done before on a concept I've never done before. It'll prove to be an interesting experience.
So I joined the team, and chatted out my usual forewarnings of my gimpiness. No one seemed to care, so that was great. Team makeup was wonderful.
Throughout the TF, everything went very smoothly, and I felt like a shining beacon to my team, showing that a little determination is enough to succeed, which was great, because of another surprise...
In this team, there were two people in it that were new to the game! For one, this was their first team, and for the other, their first controller. As you can imagine, the former was bewildered by the speed of the XP gain, and by my Handing of Grenades, and Jumping of Kicks. I had to explain everything to him, welcome him to the game, and explain to him that City of Heroes is a team-oriented game that you can play with your friends and still succeed doing whatever you want. I started to begin to feel like a true hero and veteran for the first time in a few years, rather than a cringy old man (note: not an old man) who can't stop playing the same game.
Cue Shadow Simulacrums, and more bewilderment. The two new players were confounded that my double was a Martial Arts scrapper, when I myself hit things with a bat and a sledgehammer. I had to explain the limitations of the Doppleganger system, but believe that the darn thing was psychic.
All in all, it was a very fun TF, and that's story-wise, team-wise, and character-wise. I got to level 17, but had to cut it short because a friend of mine wants me to play another character. Things are looking up! -
DAY 4
---
Well, it's about 8:30 am in my area. I got some homecooked breakfast, and a nice helping of Determination. Time to start up!
My goal for today is to just make up for lost progress. I have recipes, but I don't have salvage, but I do have money.
As a side note, I might make an all-Determinator SG if enough people get involved... -
Quote:I guess I'd have to answer the first question to answer the second question...My next thought would be: How does this idea distinguish itself from Claws?
What is the 'hook'?
Knife Melee would adopt of "Flurry of 1s" playstyle that would eventually ramp up into something that could possibly be better for fighting bosses and the like. This is totally a "boss killer" set. I guess it would've helped to put the endurance costs up there, but they're all substantially low in my head. Even Cutthroat wouldn't have that gigantic of an endurance cost. -
Quote:The way I saw it was if you have multiple stab wounds, you're going to take more damage if you keep getting stabbed. Plus, I haven't seen an Resistance based melee sets yet, so this would give us a Sonic equivalent to melee.I don't like it on several principals:
-It's just a knife. Why would it do -res while Katana, BS or even Claws doesn't. That aspect of the set doesn't make sense to me.
Quote:-A teleporting attack? Really? Almost seems like that's added in just to make it different not to mention rushing in with a knife isn't the best use of it. A placate/hidden stab would be far more appropriate.
Quote:-Knives aren't very showy. In fact, that's how they're supposed to be. You'd be looking at a set that isn't going to appeal to many based on look and yet conceptually, it shouldn't be more effective than an actual sword in combat...so the set would look plain and it wouldn't appeal to power-gamers.
Quote:All in all, I'm not dissing a knife set. One of my main villains is a knife 'thrower' and this set may fit him better. But I'd prefer sets I can't already kinda-duplicate. Spines works as a knife throw/stab set too (if a heck of a lot slower) and be more effective at the same time. -
Besides finding out the difference between the exit tram and the entrance tram...
I used to have two characters that looked the same. One was a level 50 Martial Arts/Regeneration scrapper that's used to charging in face first and not dying. The other was a level 22 Dual Pistols/Devices blaster.
So on this day, I decided to level up the Dual Pistols version. Joined a team, all good to go. We get our mission, we head in, and come up on the first mob.
Not thinking, I jumped in FIRST. Now, this is a nightmare situation for a blaster. I didn't have autorun on, I didn't get teleported in, I JUMPED in. On purpose, and then started frantically looking for Dragons Tail.
Aw crap, this is my blaster...
What was the lesson learned? Be creative with your concepts! -
Quote:I was thinking this more in a flavor text that appears on the player's screen, probably in the style as iTrial warnings, but not as intense.I'm not sure how much time this would take, or how difficult it would be to implement, but is there any way that the red/orange/yellow/green borders on the map be replaced with something that shows a color that is based on what level your character is? So, in your early days, you happen to accidentally wander into Talos, and you'd see that the neighborhoods in that zone are outlined in purple, letting you know that you shouldn't be there. I think it would be a good way to help people know what zones they are appropriate for, while also showing people where to go if they want more of a challenge.
Say for instance, I go to New Sparta in Talos Island. I believe the level range there is 22-26, so the text would be something like this, on the player's screen.
Quote:Entering New Sparta
Level Range: 22-26 -
I'm hoping the devs will realize that there are some of us that don't want to have to use two knives on a character. I had an idea just the other day for an assassin that preferred speed over power, but would never dual wield knives.
Quote:Yes, sadly, and it's all we're likely to see.
it's a shame since Shiki Tohno/Nanaya have shown me how badass single knife fighting can be. -
If you saw my post a few months back, I made a suggestion for a very basic Knife Melee set. I've worked on it a little, but I've only done a Scrapper version, so here it is. Keep in mind, I have no idea how the math works for the game, so all of the these were done in my head.

Combat Knife
Whereas most heroes would rather carry a Broadsword or a Katana, you find your skills in a Combat Knife. You may not do amazing damage at first, but Combat Knife has access to
Poison to increase its effectiveness.
|Slice| Melee range Single target minor lethal damage
Makes a quick Slice at your target. This attack has a fast recharge.
Recharge: Very fast
Damage at level 1, unenhanced: 6ish. Recharge: 1s
|Lethal Stab| Single target moderate lethal damage, +Special
Your cunning allows you to pinpoint your target's weakpoint and deliver a Lethal Stab. A successful hit will leave your target vulnerable, granting you
a bonus to your Critical Hit chance for a small amount of time.
Recharge: Fast
Damage at level 1, unenhanced: 12. Crit chance bonus: +3% Recharge: 2.20s
|Lightning Stab| Melee cone minor lethal damage, moderate DoT(lethal), foe -def(all)
Mastery of your knife allows you to strike the enemies in front of you with blinding speed, effectively lowering
their defense to all damage. All foes are left with many wounds, causing them to bleed, dealing moderate lethal damage over time.
Recharge: Moderate
Damage at level 1, unenhanced: I was thinking 10, and the DoT bumping that up to about 15. Defense debuff: 5%
Recharge: 5s
|Apply Poison| Self +Special
You tip your Combat Knife with a special blend of poison only known to you. While Apply Poison is active, all Combat Knife
attacks will do an additional minor Toxic DoT and lower your target's resistance to all damage by a small amount. Recharge: Slow
This would work like Fiery Embrace, but not as intense. Adds just a small toxic DoT to attacks and a hard -5% resistance debuff
to all attacks which would be stackable and last about 5 seconds per application. Duration: 15s Recharge: 1 min 30s
|Throw Knife| Medium range Single target moderate lethal damage, moderate DoT(toxic), -def(all), +Special
Throws a single poison-tipped knife at your target, dealing minor damage. Pinpoint accuracy lowers the target's defense. If Apply
Poison is active, Throw Knife will also add a speed debuff. Recharge: Slow
Damage at level 1, unenhanced: Including the DoT, about 23. Defense Debuff (lethal): 10%
Speed Debuff: Don't know how to calculate these, but I wanna say "no worse than Quills". Recharge: 5s
|Confront| Ranged, Foe Taunt
Challenges a foe to attack you. Useful to pull a villain off an ally who finds themselves in over their head.
A To Hit check required to Taunt enemy players, but is not needed against critter targets. Recharge: Fast
|Blade Dance| Single Target moderate DoT(lethal), -def(all) Self +Special
Your agility allows you to perform a Blade Dance with your knife, greatly wounding your target and lowering their defense
to all damage. Blade Dance also leaves you in a perfect form, raising the Critical Hit chance of your next attack. Recharge: Moderate
Damage at level 1, unenhanced: 15 Defense debuff (all): 5% Bonus Crit Chance: 10% (for the next attack)
Recharge: 10s
|Increased Cunning| PBAoE -def(all), Self +to hit
Your Increased Cunning allows you to pinpoint your enemies' strengths and weaknesses, increasing your accuracy and lowering the defense to all
damage of everyone around you for a short period of time. Recharge: Very Long
Defense debuff (All): 15% To Hit Buff: 10% Recharge: 1 min 30s
|Cutthroat| Self Teleport, Single Target High Lethal damage, foe -def(all)
Focuses all of your skill and speed into a very lethal manuever, rushing into an area undetected, cutting your target in several vital areas, dealing High Lethal damage and greatly lowering
their defense to all attacks. Recharge: Long
Damage at level 1, unenhanced: 20 Defense Debuff(all): 10% Recharge: 1 min
EDIT: Updated the set to make it more unique. Added Apply Poisons, bumped damage just a bit, and made Cutthroat a very unique "Alpha" power. -
Great build, although from the looks of this MAN build, my Determinator is gonna have to make some pool cuts to pick up his secondary attacks. Slotting IO sets will be interesting, indeed.
Also, to make a note, the Determinator is not AT restricted, so if you have to roll an AT that does get attacks in their secondary, be my guest, but I guarantee you a Tanker Determinator is gonna be very hard without armors. -
Once again, no update for today. Sorry! I had real life to attend to.
In other news, I did get lucky with temporary power recipe drops on my other characters, so less of those that I have to buy! -
I play both sides, and I have to say revamped Atlas Park means every blueside zone will have to look prettier now. I want Kings Row to look more like Gotham.
Redside? Bump up the lighting just a tad instead of making every dim. THAT'S what's making it seem despressing. I also think St. Martial should have more of a jump from Babylon to... that destroyed area that no one goes to. Also, Grandville was impressive back in CoV release. Buff up that Recluse statue. -
Just improved the overall story for Big Magic Blowout!. Also made use of the Doppleganger option. Also added a little treat in the revamped Souvenir for the arc.
-
Didn't I hear something about them lampshading stuff like this? City of Heroes being an alternate universe that could happen if Heroes existed? If that's the case, I'm sure Primal Rhode Island would be a LOT bigger than ours if 90% of all superheroes made it their home base. And an excellent target for aliens.
-
EDIT: Moved this to the costume redesign thread.

As a person that saves 99% of ALL the invention salvage they ever pick up, I'd love to see this.
