I am not saying ANYTHING bad against ML with this statement - it is a GENERAL statement.
If I were not a well known author and I sold X amount of books... X+100 would still be more books I sold and more money in my pocket. Free advertising is the best advertising because even if it only gains you 1% in sales...it still cost you nothing. So yeah "advertising" to a small group of people would/could make a minor or significant impact on sales depending on how many books you were already selling.
---
And NO I do not think ML is using the CoH "movement" to advertise her books. I did look her up when the whole SAVE movement started to see what kind of author she was as I had never heard of her.

Only if the person relies on emotions to prove a point. I tell people they are wrong all the time, but it doesn't come from an emotional place rather a logical stand point. Emotions can be motivators, but they suck as a form of communication.
I profile/assess murderers, rapists, etc every day - I don't use emotions to tell them they are wrong. People use emotions as a crutch and a scape goat. At the end of the day we are humans who can either take responsibility for what we do...or blame our emotions for our actions.
-
Common sense is often clouded by emotions and paranoia, but you try telling them that LOL!
Quote:When they were talking about emulation and reverse-engineering, I explained that even if the full studio did it, it could still take years and never get anywhere. Many devs left years before the end and didn't properly note everything, and they don't have access to any of that anyway - NCSoft made sure of it. -
Well they are a KOREAN company. And NOWHERE did NCsoft say money was not an issue. They had a HUGE loss last quarter.
Please don't ramble on with misinformation and subtle racist undertones.
Some of us Americans are also Koreans.....

Not sure what your last line is referencing; Mercedes Lackey?? Granted I don't read every thread, but I have never seen her trying to get people to buy her books. For the most part I have no issues with ML; except for her kibun...don't get me started on that.
I go to that other site, but don't participate anymore. I simply read the threads and giggle to myself at the insanity that is seen as reality.
Quote:I would like to add that although we players tried to keep the game alive with the resources we had available - it failed. The game is done at the end of the month.
The reason I say this is there is a group making ***** of themselves on a particular website and its shameful the game dies with this core group of fans behaving irrationally and paranoid. Get over it, you probably spent too much time on the mmo, you probably made sacrifices to real life relationships in the playing of this game, but make amends with your poor decisions and get back to reality or drop out into another mmo. This march behind some twit trying to sell you her books is getting sillier every day. -
Aww yer cute. I actually read the forums there and trust me...they think it is going to be successful and then some. They also think they are responsible for the fluctuations in NCSoft stock prices. They think that after Nov 30th they are going to do such a huge campaign that NCSoft will shudder.. etc etc...
I'm here because I have nostalgia for a game I played for 7+ years. I'm not here to soothe people or hide my beliefs.
Quote:Hey, everybody in this thread? Right here. Look over here please.
Got your attention?
Good.
Is Plan Z going to fail? Yeah, probably, and nobody understands that better than they do. But at least they're trying to do something.
What are you doing? Trolling what's left of a dwindling population.
But it boils down to this: either you're still here because you care about the game and want it to succeed, in which case you should tell the people who are still trying that you wish them good luck and leave it at that if you can't say anything nice, OR you actually want everything to fail and are just here to fiddle while the city burns.
If the latter is true, then please add "with a cactus" to the sentiment in the image above. -
Basically this. I give it until January/February 2013 until it is completely abandoned. TonyV hasn't even posted on Titan now for a week. I lurk there some times, but don't bother posting there anymore (See Sig).
Quote:A couple do. But most are just hobbyists with extremely simplistic views of how software games get written, and overly-inflated views of their mental midgetry in contributing to same.
In other words, don't hold your breath. The game you have been playing was one of a kind. Anything else is just going to suck. Witness the multi-million dollar flops than have been DCUO and Champions Online.
Really, all the Plan Z people are doing is getting a few people's hopes up only to slink away in shame when they realize how impossible it is for them deliver. -
Uhm why did you have to do the tutorial? After the first time it becomes an option.
I rarely purchased costume pieces, but I did buy a few power sets. I had no issues with the Hybrid model (Freedom) as I was a VIP. I also loved the Incarnate content; gave me something to do post 50. I have never played WoW but from my understanding the itrials were nothing like the end game raids there.
Quote:Pretty much, except I gave up on the game a few months before the announcement. The game became a less fun WoW with incarnate trials, and trying to do anything else felt like a waste of time.
Sometimes I would get inspired to make a new character. I would log in, then I realized most of my costume ideas need to be purchased in the shop, the powers as well (and not to mention having to bust open a thesaurus), and when I finally managed to make something serviceable, I get dropped into a laggy tutorial with an event at the end I have to do twice because if you don't get in right away as it starts, it doesn't count that you completed it. Couple this with going into a dead AP, the game just became uninteresting and no one was doing anything else besides itrials and the new shiny praetoria and Dark Astoria.
That was the best case scenario. Most of the time for the months leading up to me just ending my subscription were me having idea and just logging out when I couldn't do anything with it. -
Fansy is an Asian female...not a HE
The last time Fansy said "Here is some hope for you all"...and dropped names like Fred Gallagher and Matthew Inman stating they were discussing saving CoH with them; proved to be a bogus claim.
So yeah when I see Fansy post...I literally just roll my eyes.
Quote:Hmmm. You know this nonsense makes a certain amount of sense.
This "Fansy" may have an inside source or not. It frankly doesn't matter. He brings up a good point. If NCSoft was loosing part of their profit from COH due to some kind of legal deal letting the game "die" and then resurrecting to end whatever deal it is makes sense.
But this assumes that someone at NCSoft cares enough about the game to want it to continue (I'm not talking about the people at Paragon here).
As for Fansy himself my impression of him is that he
1. Is much older (and smarter) than he pretends to be.
2. Is a writer of some kind. He may be a book writer or even a game lore writer.
3. Takes great joy in the amenity of the internet.
4. Loved his grandfather dearly. -
NCSoft made me happy for over 7 years with CoH so in my eyes they achieved their goal/mission statement.
Quote:Luckily, some companies do just that:

Yes I seriously fail to see how comparing the death of a living thing to a game shutting down is even remotely similar. What's next saying it's similar to a real friend dying? Completely blows my mind when people humanize the closure in such ways. To let one's self get THAT emotionally attached to a video game baffles me. I understand PEOPLE are close to each other from CoH, but the game closing down does not automatically "kill" those relationships unless you let it. The people I was close to because of CoH...I am still close to.
So no I wholeheartedly disagree with the metaphor and feel sorry for those that do think CoH closing is like losing someone/something REAL and alive.

Uhm my dog is a living thing; CoH is a game. My dog requires me to feed and water her...to make sure she gets her shots...to brush her...and to bathe her after she decides wading into a mud puddle is smart. CoH is not a living thing that depends on me to do anything. If I were to leave my dog alone for 2 weeks she would die...If I don't play CoH for two weeks nothing happens to CoH.
So no...comparing the death of ANYTHING living is not the same as an MMO shutting down.
Quote:Excellent points.
Replacing this game is like your dog dying and some moron telling you, "No big deal! Just go out and get a new puppy, today! Any puppy will do, and by the way grieving for your dog is only something done by stone idiots. So get going! Go get that new puppy! TODAY!"
CluelessCluelessClueLESS, was born WITHOUT A HINT OF A CLUE, EVER. [Not you, people telling us this.]
p.s. this exact type of s*** is why I will never, ever buy into "cloud computing." Giving some faceless corporation total power over my stuff? Great idea. What could POSSIBLY go wrong?! -
I think it's more a testament to the dev's skills than this game.
But I am happy they are getting new jobs; especially since the job market is not that open at the moment.

The last great hope Fansy gave the CoH community turned out Fansy was getting played by an impersonator; so they said. As far as I can remember Fansy is someone who actually used to/still does work at NCSoft. I forget the position they had/have.
My issue with Fansy is simply the whole "talk like a crazy person" when it has been shown that instead of being Golden Girl on lyrical crack...Fansy can actually hold a real conversation in English. I am not into the coy hints of some peopleor the purposeful crazy rambling innuendos of other fancy birds. If you have something to say just say it.

I like UNO's pizzeria in downtown Chicago. no clue if it is still there. Last time I was in Chicago was 1992. I enjoy NY pizza (Pie) more though. Sadly I rarely eat pizza though due to the carbs
If I ate a lot of pizza I would be a short fat Korean man
I am going to have to decline your offer as I spend most of my travel time either in NY or California; that's where most of my friends live. Being insulted isn't something that bothers me or something I seek out for enjoyment. Maybe it's the robot in me, but there are very few opinions about me that matter...my boss...my dog...yeah that's about it LOL.
Quote:First. I wasn't insulting you. I was making an observation.
But if the foo *****, Cinderella...
Second. *I* was the word filter. Not the forum.
Third. I'm not going to circumvent word filters. Sorry. If you feel the overriding need to, knock yourself out.
Fourth. If you want these things just so you can KNOW you're being insulted and justify (at least to yourself) that you're SO put-upon, tough ****. If you REALLY want to know that bad, come down to Chicago, I'll take you out to lunch and insult you to your face so there's no equivocation on the matter. Work for your wangst. -
Well it was a tv show based on the law so they probably won millions of dollars LOL!
I remember watching Ally McBeal and some of those lawsuits and thinking "Yeah our judicial system sucks but this crap is so unrealistic it's not funny." Granted I liked All McBeal but the "law" in it made me raise an eyebrow.
Quote:Hmmm. Interesting post, Tim. 1. how did the Boston Legal episode turn out? I assume the elderly couple lost/had no case. (Sounds like a frivilous lawsuit to my layman's ears.) and 2. I had a funny image of the Entertainment Industry dressed as Marie Antionette saying "Let them eat poop!" Not exactly enticing, and no doubt the reason why I find comparatively little on television worth watching or even in the movie house. -
LOL except now there is so much variety on television it's crazy. Hundreds of channels most of which I have no use for.
Golf Tv? Food Network? Discovery Kids? G4? Seems like there is a channel for almost everything any more. When I was a kid you had: NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS hehehe. I remember when cable started getting popular and there were channels like: MTV (They played videos back then), USA, TNT, and of course my mom's favorite: Lifetime - Television for women. THAT I never understood - television for women yet it seemed almost every film they had the woman was getting beat/rap3d/killed/kidnapped... what the frock man!
Quote:Yeah I noticed this beyond the gaming world. Even though sometimes companies see their mistakes and realize that the niche was not as small as they thought, like the Camaro. When it was first killed off, there was no intentions on bringing it back because GM said that car filled only a niche market. Ford was filled with joy. Then the Mustang sale soared, it got a retro look, and GM starting looking and saying "God dang it what have we done." Thus the retro styled Camaro came to light and they spent big bucks to make up for lost ground and for them it works. For others not so much. I think about all the stuff that have come and gone now to be replaced wit hstuff more "generic" but hugely popular. Everything from car designs, clothes, shoes, tv shows, movies, even food.
One one hand it's maximizing profits on the other hand it makes it bland. But hey, seems that is what people want or at least enough of them want it that they dotn have to worry about the people that dont. Just like when Cadillac killed the Eldorado. There have been customers that (most now are highly pissed and said they wont buy another GM product) been buying Eldos. every year since the 70s. Niche market. DTS-niche car, replaced with something that is barely has more room than a CTS. Smooth ride in most new cars-niche. People like the feel of every bump inthe road accordign to car makers. Car designs that look like it had any thought process-Niche market. People apparently want cars that look like a giant insect or like a run of the mill Civic (Talking about that blasted C-CLass that looks like the Civic). Shows where people are not acting like a plum fool on tv-niche. Hey people love Snookie and them house wives. -
You seem to equate people who are not overly emotional and use logic in discussing matters as wanting CoH to die?
I enjoyed the 7+ years I played CoH and had no desire for it to end. Just because I am not stomping my feet and demonizing NCSoft does not mean I am any less a fan of CoH. Stating that I "won" because CoH is dead makes no sense since I enjoyed CoH.
I am here because I like reading these forums...I like reading the differing viewpoints and I like discussing all things CoH. These forums are for all the players of CoH. If it weren't for these forums I would have never known about the Extra Life 4 Kids charity and would have missed out on helping raise over $8,000 for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

Not decrying the support of other games/gamers, but if I were a ChO or DCUO player this should worry them. Neither of those games are performing well and I fear their sunsets are a lot closer than they want to admit. If either of them make it through 2013 I would be hugely surprised. I'm not knocking the games themselves (I did not like them but I can see their appeal to others) just hoping they see the writing on the wall. Economic times are rough for everyone; even businesses, and now is not the time to be seen as losing money or pulling in weak profits in the MMO industry.
(I didn't mention SWTOR because I only played that game for like an hour and am completely unfamiliar with their financial situation; although I remember reading they are losing customers at an alarming rate).
Quote:That's starting to change too actually. Amazingly we've been getting support from other games. And I think we're going to see more of it, if these kinds of things keep happening. The frontier of the internet is so young though that there's scarcely been any time to define its value beyond a literal sense. But philosophy can't help but become more of a factor as time goes on. And people will start asking the deep questions that will make the whole thing sound like a dialogue from the Matrix or Tron. "What is real?" "You don't have the right to cut the users off."
But comparing CoH to NCsoft's previous slayings is moot. All of those games were in FAR worse shape than CoH was when given the termination order. And whether it was a weak profit or a strong one, it was still a profit. And MMO's being shut down while they're still generating revenue is uncharted territory, and paints a pretty scary picture for the future of the genre.
By the way, the fact that you said NC doesn't care whether we keep buying their products or not, is EXACTLY why I have felt that "voting with your wallet" is a meaningless gesture and does NOT create the balance of power between company and consumer that most pro-capitalists (probably the wrong word to use, because I don't disagree with capitalism, only that it has become more corrupt and 'scroogey' as time has progressed) love to use as a reason why everything is as it should be.
