You may want to look at how long most MMOs get for a sunset...On average 30 days and what did we get??? 90 days. (Please note I said average and not all before saying X MMO got 60 days or Y MMO got 90 days)
If it weren't for NCSoft CoH would have died in 2007.
Your subscriber numbers are a little off. The BEST guess off revenue is that CoH had... 50-60k subs since Freedom. Who cares what it had PRE Freedom because that was a year ago and not NOW. 50-60k subs is not a thriving game no matter how you look at it; especially with most of the Dev team working on Project X. Working on a new project when you have the smallest number of subs since launch; probably not the best use of funds.
I really don't care if people never purchase an NCSoft title again - it doesn't affect me LOL. I just get tired of all the "NCSOFT is evil" BS when if it weren't for them this game wouldn't have been here. MMOs die - get over it already. Go join Plan Z (lol) or the emulation project.
MOST Gaming forums are just like these....nothing special or pleasant about the CoH forums from my experience on SWTOR, CO, DCUO, GWII etc....
Quote:Oh, not shutting down a successful MMO was "giving it 5 more years of life" and an "extended sunsetting time frame". Gotcha. What color is the sky in your fantasy world?
A subscriber base that never dropped below 100k subscribers before it went free to play isn't a "small..declining group of players" by a long shot. Unless you're comparing everything to WoW numbers.
You also have a very naive idea of "inhospitable forums". If you think these forums are inhospitable, you can't have much experience with internet forums, ESPECIALLY gaming forums. These are downright pleasant. Just because people tell you when you're wrong doesn't mean they're being "inhospitable"... -
Trust me you have NO clue about me
And my experience on other MMO forums is the exact same as these... Some helpful people, some unicorns, and a lot in between. Again my whole point that people are getting butthurt over is this: CoH is JUST another game with another game community like most...it (community) is nothing special. And THAT is what upsets people because they want to feel special; they want to feel like they belong to something special...when truth be told the CoH community is just another MMO community.
And as I have said before: CoH is the only game I have played for an extended period of time - not because of the community but because of the GAME. Was CoH the game special - absolutely it was to me. I'm not dissing CoH; just interjecting a bit of reality when it comes to the "special" community.
Quote:I peruse the forums of every MMO I play, and I play quite a few. Most of them have been far worse than CoH's Forums.
Yes, there were rude posters here on CoH. However, there were a lot more people that actually posted helpful information in a polite manner than the ones that posted lolzrude comments.
Also, the Community Rep team went from from the extremes of super lax to ban hammer happy before settling on a reasonable middle ground.
Each community is different. Mainly because of a combination of the players and the CR team. This game happened to have an excellent CR team for the last few years and the community is outstanding, compared to the other forums that I read.
Also, every time you post, you give away clues about yourself. So, yes, we do have a clue about you, your intentions, and what CoH means to you. -
I have always stated that the CoH forums were full of Mod sanctioned unicorns
You can classify me as a jerk all you want - I consider it to be more blunt realism. I'm not here to sugar coat things for delusional people. CoH is not special in it's community no matter how many people think so. Every MMO community I have seen has their good and their bad...there is nothing about the CoH community that makes it special. I did not play this game for the community plain and simple...I played it because it was a game I liked. I actively avoided the forum community for 6+ years because of the absolute rudeness I saw new posters receiving at the hands of the cartel. People on here like to think CoH is special because that means they are special for being a part of it...if that's what makes you sleep better at night....
Me...I realize that CoH is just one of many games; with one of many communities that think they are the best/unique/special. People don't like what I say because they still are holding out hope that someone will come along and save CoH...uhmm ok go ahead, but do not be surprised on December 1, 2012. People don't like me speaking out against Plan Z because they think it will be a reality soon™ - and I can say with enough certainty that Plan Z will never see the light of day. People don't like me speaking out against the planned emulator because "COH IS OURS TO KEEP" no it's not and emulation of CoH is illegal no matter how much you think you are "owed."
CoH was a great game and I enjoyed it for over 7 years, but it's done. I choose to be a realist about that instead of holding out false hope that it will be rescued and if that makes me a jerk...I will gladly wear that title. I would rather be a jerk than someone who is so blinded by virtual co-dependency that they can't be bothered to honestly see the situation for what it is
Quote:Both of you have had some pretty inflamed posts in the past, more often than not. So have I. I've found that if you're a jerk, people are jerks back. What I find hilarious is when people who speak out in unfavorable ways get butthurt and yell at those who call them on being unfavorable and/or belittle the community because they can't take what they dish out. -
Quit using logic they don't like that here
This is their home and their are unique butterflies and no one has ever had to experience this before.
For people that are so anti-NCSoft it makes you wonder why they bothered playing CoH in the first place.
Quote:Actually Cosmic Rift is defined as an MMO, but if you want to limit it, then you also have to discount from NCSoft's list Exteel since that's a shooter...also leave out point blank and dragonica since those are still running, just not in all the regions it used to run.
That leaves 4 for NCSoft and 3 for Sony.
And SWG was not shut down "by" Lucas Arts. It was shut down by John Smedley (Sony) because he thought it would have difficulties once SWTOR is released.
Yes, their license agreements were expiring but because of various factors among which was the SWTOR launch and other things, Smedley decided to let the license contract lapse.
And much like CoX, SWG still had a loyal fanbase that were outraged by the closure. -
#1
I am probably older than you and I have not been a kid for over 30 years.
#2
Not everyone lies - your belief that I am lying says WAY more about you than me.
The CoH "community" that I enjoyed were the 3 friends I have had for years. I didn't even bother with registering on the forums until a year ago because of the complete rudeness that was allowed by the Mods for people with high post counts.
Ask yourself this: If the "community" here on the boards was so frickin welcoming - why is it that 90% of an ONLINE game's community never bothered to register and/or post here? I can answer that for you if you would like... The forums are basically a form of pvp that many people could not stomach. I have visited other forums and they are just as rude as these, they also have a community, they have their romances, they have their children with needs who have been helped by the game, and they have their unicorns assuming people are kids and shelling out unsolicited profiling by ill equipped wanna bes. CoH is not special in it's playerbase or in it's community - it has some helpful people, some morons, and everything in between. It is just another game community.
Like I said: Keep your dime store psychology to yourself... because you have no clue about me, my intentions, or what CoH was to me
-
The problem with doing a CoH2 now is a lot of people feel burnt by the MMO industry. A lot of the CoH community has moved on already. When the announcement came we were sitting at roughly 50-60k paying players. The petition to save CoH still hasn't even hit the 22,000 mark. So unless it could actually be marketed; to a new group of players - I doubt that they (Developers of CoH2) could count on much from former CoH players.
Would I play CoH2? Depends on who the studio was and how much like the original the new game was. The problem I have with every MMO I have tried since starting CoH is they are too different from CoH mechanics...so without that familiar feel I would probably try it and not stay. And CoH was not "going strong" it was treading water barely. With a smaller development team (focused solely on CoH) it would have been doing much better, but Project X was draining a lot of money from Paragon.
Quote:Am I the only one who thinks that if the IP is sold, work will begin on a CoX2? This game has lasted 8+years, and was still going rather strong. Trying to buy and then revive an already old game wouldn't make much sense from a bussiness point of view, I would think. But realizing that there is a fairly large market for a game such as City of Heroes, with an already loyal community, would seem to be a perfect opportunity for a new MMO. -
OOH 460+ words - uhm ok? I write more than that on most of my Rotten Tomatoes forum posts so not sure what that means.
I can't find a replacement for the GAME CoH ...never cared much for the overall community of CoH which I find insulting you think CoH has the best community - I'm pretty sure almost every MMO has a great community if you look for it - full of testimonials, heart break, romance, etc....
And you bet I was on Team CoH for Extra Life 4 Kids. It was either them or join a local group here in New Mexico where I knew no one. So I joined Team CoH with a friend from the game - it was a great way to raise money for children and families in need...plus it gave my friend and I a reason to play together one last time - Had NOTHING to do with the community of CoH - it was however about raising funds for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.
CoH is JUST a game to me. The few people I did talk to in game have moved on to GW2. In general the CoH community was not my thing - I'm not into comics and definitely not into RP. I played for the new shinies and challenges...I played to see how much I could min/max my toons (NONE of which has ever had a bio because they were just toons).
As for your dime store psychology of people who think/state CoH is just a game - don't quit your day job.
On November 30th a few friends and I plan on getting together for the last time - doing a few tfs...having some fun on skype etc - because we know it will be the last time we will ever be able to do that in CoH. None of us are playing the emulator that will eventually come out. None of us have any desire to play Plan Z (which I doubt will ever see the light of day). To us CoH was about having fun on our toons...they weren't characters..we didn't RP...and yes we all loved CoH the game, but we are also self aware enough to know when to stop fighting for something and to move on.
Quote:It's "just a game" that you just wrote 460+ words dismissing.
It's "just a game" that you claim unable to find a replacement for.
And it's "just a game" who's community, you included, helped raise several thousand dollars for charity.
I ponder if the "it's just a game" posts I keep seeing from a select few are just attempt at convincing themselves about it... -
No I don't care about responses because most people on the SaveCoH front are delusional about their efforts. It cannot be saved. Did I want it to be saved - absolutely. CoH was the only game that ever interested me, but I am a realist - the writing on the wall is VERY plain to see.
CoH's "best" bet for any continuation at all is an illegal emulation - which goes against everything I believe in. My lack of faith in Titan stems from their public message of being against an emulator meanwhile...quite a few of them are assisting on the emulation project. My lack of faith in Titan is compounded by the pure disorganization of everything since the initial few weeks of the SaveCoH movement.
I had a PM from someone on the Titan forums saying something like "Well they don't know who is doing the emulation project" to which I call shenanigans...if I know as an average Joe Schmoe I am pretty sure all the Titan people know; but rather decide to turn a blind eye to it. But let's say they don't know...that says a lot about Titan then that people are organizing an illegal emulator right under there noses...included some of their own "staff."

What NCSoft did was give CoH 5 more years of life.
What NCSoft did was give an extended sunsetting time frame compared to most MMOs that are closed down.
Pretty convenient that people forget those two things. NCSoft did not screw over the CoH players...but you go right ahead and keep thinking that. I choose to look at it from a realistic stand point instead of an overly emotional stand point. CoH was not some thriving community contrary to what others want people to think. It was a small..declining group of players who couldn't be bothered with saving the game until it was too late. Things that led to this point: Inhospitable forums...way too many servers spreading the population thin...lack of advertisement...and a piss poor Hybrid model that encouraged people not to sub... Frankly I was always surprised CoH lasted as long as it did.
Don't get me wrong.. I loved CoH the game, but the "community" I could have done without. Even now the supposed community has become nothing but spoiled brats whining about how NCSoft is evil and took their toys...all while forgetting that NCSoft saved this game when no one else wanted it.
Quote:As someone that bought GW2 a month before the CoH shutdown announcement, it's not about feeling happy about playing another NCSoft game. It's about getting the value out of the money I spent cuz I can't get it back.
The way GW2's business model is set up allows me to play the game indefinitely which allows me to get my moneys worth, and I have the ability to convert my ingame currency into credit in their microtransaction store, which allows me to buy anything I want while thumbing my nose at NCSoft by not spending another frakking dime.
I and others like me get to be an anchor around their necks dragging down their profits for what they did to CoH. A constant reminder of what happens when they screw over their customers.
Alone I may not have much impact but united the GW2 community can send them a message in the only place NCSoft pays attention to. Their wallets. -
It's also the only studio that ever bothered saving CoH
Had NCSoft not stepped up to the plate 5 years ago CoH would have died then. So you can be grateful to them for the past 5 years of the game.
And FYI just how many of the games that were shut down were due to not bringing enough subs/profit.... Business are in the business of making money and just because a game is liked by 20-50,000 people does not mean they are providing enough of (if any) profit to be maintained...pretty much Business 101.
Auto Assault was BLEEDING money
Dungeon Runners was NOT profitable...it was LOSING money
Exteel never made back what it cost to produce and so it was shut down due to it being a financial drag on the company.
Tabula Rasa while loved by a few...was just that..too little of a subscriber base...and it was not making a profit.
Seeing the trend here? And while CoH was not unprofitable it was not bringing in the profts NCSoft wanted..so they shut it down. It is a business... and like all businesses has to make decisions regarding their future and sometimes those decisions are hard for the customer to deal with. CoH was dying...and if you fail to see that then you are simply refusing to see the facts. Sure it probably could have survived a year or two more, but then again it was not the flourishing game that some people would like to paint it as being.
So you go ahead and hate on NCSoft for being the big bad meanie of a business that you think it is...but remember it is that big bad business that gave you Issues 11-23......they gave you 5 more years of playing.
-
Yeah because NCSoft is the only company to close an MMO.
Cryptic (you know the people behind Champions Online)... were the one's who abandoned CoH, but thankfully NCSoft saved it with NCNC later Paragon Studios. Yes BOOO on NCSoft for saving CoH and giving it 5 more years (Which is a lot longer than most MMOs ever last total). Oh BTW Cryptic has an F rating with the Better Business Bureau. Then again Cryptic's parent company; Perfect World has just started closing some of their games recently.... And the future of CO is VERY uncertain at this time due to it's financial struggles
Then again you could always move to an SOE game because they never close their games (*cough* SWG *cough* *cough* Matrix Online *cough*). BTW SOE tends to give their players a ONE month notice of closure...that was nice of them...maybe that's what NCSoft should have given CoH players?
Hmm maybe Funcom?? We all know they made The Secret World...and that it performed so poorly in sales that on Aug 22, 2012 (7 weeks after release) that Funcom laid off half the staff due to severe under-performance in sales....But hey if you are unsure about TSW there is always.. Age of ConanThey like to blame Diablo III and GW2 for their lackluster sales.
You could also go to an EA/Bioware game... Stars Wars The Old Republic, but it is losing players at an alarming rate. they are hoping their F2P model can save them (sound familiar?). What does it matter that EA was voted the worst company in America in 2012 by The Consumerist
Blizzard...I mean who doesn't love WoW?? right?
So yeah... go ahead and bash NCSoft...the people who saved CoH when Cryptic abandoned it. Go ahead and bash NCSoft because they are a business who GASP are in the business of making money. Sure go ahead and bash them for the way they are closing CoH; because the notice they did give was more than fair. MMOs close...people need to learn that a GAME is not reality and that it is JUST a game. But you go ahead and boycott NCSoft and when your next MMO closes..boycott that company too..and the next and the next. It's called reality people... CoH could not sustain itself any longer and NCSoft had every right to close it...and they have every right not to sell it.
Me personally.. I am thankful for NCSoft because if it weren't for them the years I enjoyed playing CoH would have ended 5 years ago.
-
The offers were an insult.
Last verified offer I heard of was $3 million. NCSoft had every right to snub their noses at such a lowball "offer."
There is no "saving" CoH. The offers that were made were ridiculously low and one of the reasons is that there is no one out there with any business sense who would offer what the IP is worth (Well what it WAS worth).
The state of CoH as it stands will not bring in profit to anyone. A HUGE chunk of the player base has already moved on since 8/31. EVEN if CoH were somehow saved they would be lucky to get half of the player base that existed on 8/31.
The era of CoH has come and gone. I just have the emotional stability to recognize that; while others cling to hope and laughable projects (Plan Z). CoH had a great 8+ year run which MANY MMOs cannot say.
FYI for all you "I hate NCSoft" people...if it weren't for NCSoft CoH would have ended a long time ago. The "profit" CoH brought in was not worth their time and they have every right to do what they did...both in choosing to end the game and in choosing not to accept such demeaning offers for the IP. They GAVE the players 3 months of free time...and they did not have to - they could have sunset CoH in just 30 days...so while you bash them remember that!
I realize a lot of people are hurt etc, but at the end of the day CoH is not a community.. it is a game. If your "community" cannot survive the game ending it was never such a huge, great, supportive community you thought it was....
I think what a lot of the people who post here, and other CoH forums, forget is that CoH is NOT reality....it is JUST a game. You can try to paint pretty pictures of a community through testimonials etc...but I have some news for you.. every MMO has a community, every MMO has testimonials, and eventually every MMO will sunset.
The sooner you realize that the toon you RPd with for 8 years was just a toon...the better off you will be.
Here's hoping a few people step back for a second and let reality in...the reality is CoH is closing on 11/30. The reality is that Plan Z will probably never see the light of day. The reality is no one is going to buy CoH. The reality is...most people who can accept CoH for JUST the game that it is/was....have moved on.
You can flame me all you want...for telling the reality of things; because again I realize this is just the internet... and CoH is JUST a game...that is ending.
Quote:So with blogs still tagging it as rumor, i take it there's still no solid info about who those investors are/were?
Someone should at least know what the offers were...though i'd imagine $10-20 million in this market and with the state CoX was in, might be a hard sell. -
Probable nowhere.
I am not an MMOer. My first MMO was CoH. Let me explain why I am not going to certain games that others seem to be.
CO: I have tried it a few times; as recently as 2 weeks ago. The LOOK of it is a HUGE turn off to me. And I mean HUGE. I am not a comic book person...I came to CoH because I wanted to be a super hero not a comic book hero. CO's recent financial problems also put a huge question mark on it's future for me. EVEN if I could get past the god awful look of the game I would always be thinking "why bother." If CO sees 2 more years of ACTIVE development I would be extremely surprised.
GW2: I have this and most of my global friends have migrated there already. Granted my highest toon there is a level 8 Elementalist. While I do think GW2 is a beautiful game (environment wise) it just feels like your typical WoW clone to me. I don't get/like the whole loot/armor/ system; again I am not an MMOer so it makes no sense to me. While most of my friends are playing GW2 it's just very hard for me to get into the game. It doesn't bother me that it's an NCSoft game - I am not like most people here...I actually realize that NCSoft is what has kept CoH going for 8+ years and hold no ill will towards them.
DCUO: Yeah uhmm not gonna happen. I tried this game out and couldn't even play it for an hour before I was bored to death. I also do not expect this game to be around and actively developed two years from now.
TSW: Simply have no interest in it.
Titan City/Plan Z: IF this "game" ever sees the light of day I expect it will be a complete hodge podge of nonsense. The leadership and organization of it is so scattered that it reminds me of a high school project. If (and that is a HUGE IF) this project ever sees the light of day I highly doubt there will be enough of a population to make it worthwhile. I think Plan Z is in for a rude awakening in the near future as they have no idea how much time and work are truly needed to create a playable game.
CoH Emulator: Yeah no thanks. Stealing is stealing. NONE of my friends have even entertained the idea of going to an emulator and even if they were...morally and professionally I cannot be associated with such a thing. The bad part about the emulation project is you have people involved in that and Plan Z which to me discredits Plan Z immediately in my book.
So that leaves me going nowhere probably. I MIGHT play GW2 SOME; and by some I mean an hour here or there. -
With 4 hours left here is what I have achieved today:
Doc Q
ITF
MLTF
Kahn TF
RSF
Kal Mort
Apex
Tin Mage
DD
MoM
Mag (Full)
Also did a lot of missions and a few story arcs with my Extra Life partner -
3 hours down... 21 to go
teaming with 2 other Extra Lifers atm.. running some 54x8 missions -
I said it over on Titan and I will say it here - Amazing video. With the sun set coming closer every day your video really hit home. Just 2 months ago I thought I would have CoH for at least 2-3 more years and now like everyone else that day is creeping up faster than I ever thought it would.
The ending made me realize just how much I am dreading the LOST CONNECTION message I will be receiving on 11/30/2012 -
-
Team CoH has currently raised............
$7,037.33
With tomorrow being the day of the Extra Life campaign I just wanted to thank EVERYONE involved; whether you are participating or have donated I am very grateful!

We will be accepting donations all the way through tomorrow to try and get our amount as high as possible. Remember EVERY donation counts; whether it be $1 or $10.
Be a hero to a child in need! -
I feel ya... I am $22 away form my goal. Here is hoping Friday someone will respond to my tweets/posts etc...and push me to my goal
Tomorrow is gonna be a crazy day..work work work..get home.. try to get to bed early. I am actually playing from 6AM Mountain to 6AM Mountain because my Extra Life gaming partner is East Coast and I am not LOL! I am sooo gonna crash Sunday morning
-
Uhh no they shouldn't.
That is the risk you run when subbed to an MMO unfortunately.
There is no guarantee any MMO will be around in 3 months..or 6 months. I say this as someone who spent $115 in June and July 2012 total. I bought a service and I received it...We are not OWED anything outside what NCSoft has already stated they would be refunding. If you truly think you are...speak with your bank, credit card company, PayPal but I think you will find them about as useful as a limp dick at an orgy once they get all the facts.

$6,519.33 is how much team CoH has raised so far for Extra Life 4 Kids!!!!!!!!!!
We are currently ranked #20 out of 2219 teams!
Still 2 days left to get support for the participants and I am hopeful tomorrow we will see a surge of donations with it being pay day for some and the day before the actual event.
Just want to say THANKS again to everyone who has donated...your support means a lot to each participant, but more to the families who will be help by local Children's Miracle Network Hospitals!
Keep up the great work heroes!
http://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?...am&teamID=9445 -
$6,249.33!!!!!
With 3 days left Extra Life is VERY close to beating last years total already. Last year Extra Life raised 1.2 million and right now the total is sitting at $1,040,239.99!
Keep up the great work everyone!!

I am not an MMO person...only ever REALLY played CoH, BUT am considering trying Marvel when it comes out. Can you please explain to me though what Diablo style means (Yes I know Diablo is a game hehehe).
Quote:Well it's in the works. And it's diablo style? This is where i'm heading after CoX shuts down.

That was always something I really wanted was the ability to buy things for friends easily for birthdays, Christmas, Hanukkah, etc. GRRR
