But what if there is no car around? Should I dig a car out of the office floor?

More money chasing after the same or fewer goods = higher prices.

    [/ QUOTE ]

This still ignores the human component. People willing to actually throw more money at those same or fewer goods. The goods don't suck the inf off your pile by themselves.

If it helps, look at what I said as merely misanthropic commentary.

Paraphrased: DR-on rewards for clicking of the same type of glowie for X hours.

Unfortunately this sorta ALSO can penalize someone who is using the MA legitimately. So I'd vote "no" on it.

So, as this threads' title suggests... there are definitely harmful farmers.

No because it turns the term "farm" into an over-broad pejorative.

The people you're talking about are abusing exploits.

    [/ QUOTE ]
OK... how'bout we all agree that exploit farming is harmful then?

    [/ QUOTE ]

I dunno that EVERYONE would agree. But, personally? HELL YEAH!

About the only redeeming feature it has right now is pointing out what needs to be nerfed until someone can put it back later in a non-exploitable form.

    Double XP and AE

And to be honest, your statement holds true for ALL statistics

I'm just saying "hating Vista" has turned into a "social cool" rather than actual opinion.

    [/ QUOTE ]

For a lot of people? Sure. For everyone? No.

I don't really "hate" the OS. Just, given my druthers, I'd use something else.

    Double XP and AE

    [ QUOTE ]

But unlike my poor analogy, I'd say 90% of the AEers are farmers.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yes, but 73.591% of all internet statistics are pulled from places that are dark and smelling of feces (see: made up).

    New Box Advice?

Here's a basic suggestion for an $1100 system, sans monitor.

    [ QUOTE ]
    Vista or Win7?

    [/ QUOTE ]

My personal preference is XP still. But that may not be feasible for you. Part of it will be "when are you building?" So if you're building in the next couple months, likely the answer will be "Vista, unfortunately."

    [ QUOTE ]
    Dual-core vs Quad-core

    [/ QUOTE ]

CoX will use 2 cores max right now. However, if your system is doing other things under the hood, you won't be able to utilize ALL the resources of both cores merely for CoX. With a quad-core system, your system can offload to the other two cores while CoX monopolizes two for itself.

You don't need to worry about watercooling either. Properly installed, air cooling is sufficient if you're not overclocking.

And, if you don't have a nice flat-panel monitor already, I'd recommend you use the remaining money for that.

  11. The problems and hate for Vista aren't really so much from a user perspective.

It's doing admin and security for the OS that the hate starts flowing fast and free.

    Windows Vista needs some love.

    [/ QUOTE ]

If so, it's the love that dare not speak it's name.

    [ QUOTE ]
It's really not as bad as people want to think it is.

    [/ QUOTE ]

No. It's worse. It's an OS with a bloated UI and a stupid, broken security component that encourages click-monkey behavior unless the component interferes with your application. Then you have to turn it off. At which point, you're dealing with, essentially, XP with a bloated UI.
  13. [ QUOTE ]
FYI xp 64-bit was actually horrible.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    <Dr. Evil> No, not really...

Granted, you have to do some research on your equipment BEFORE making the decision to use XP-64. Yes, the driver support for XP-64 is limited. BUT, if you have the appropriate drivers for all your hardware and peripherals, XP-64 works just fine.

As for app support. As of right now, I have yet to find anything I'm running that won't install or run on XP-64. YMMV though.

HOWEVER, as this person is on an HP laptop, HP never really adopted XP-64. So it's highly unlikely that his laptop will have XP-64 drivers.
  14. [ QUOTE ]
I generally don't mind the maintenance, though I'm thankful for the heads up. However, what I DO mind is that my Server Status Page is trapped in a time warp back to June 24th and displays the stats from this day around 90% of the time, thus being completely useless for monitoring server status to me. Not that I mind all that much, but it'd be nice if I knew when I could log on. I have an item pack to test!

    Want to die...

If I were you, here's what I'd do if I had access to a second machine:

    1: Get said second machine
2: Back up anything on the machine that might be important to you. Put the backup someplace else.
3: Put a nice strong AV on there and update the signatures.
4: Plug the externals in one at a time and scan the living *BLEEP!* outta them.

It's POSSIBLE you merely have a corrupted signatures file and your AV on the main machine is freaking. But even if you ARE virused, it doesn't mean you have to automatically lose ALL the data.

Also, in the future, you may want to invest in something that can make backups to something other than your hard drive. Some backup software will make backups to an FTP account.

Here's what I recommend to smaller clients who don't want to put out the cash for BackupExec.

With something like this program, you can schedule backups to go off nightly (or on some other regular basis). And since you're talking about a relatively small amount of data (to me, anything under a few hundred gigs is "small"), the time needed to make the backup should be fairly minimal.
  16. I'll be disappointed if it doesn't get double XP. But merely on an intellectual level. In reality (of the game...uhh...YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!) it won't affect me at all as I'm not making use of MA at the moment.

Indeed, I'm probably going to be turning off XP earnings on some of my characters.

No, they don't even need to. All they need to do is run a SQL query to "discover"

You presume they're using SQL. What if this isn't the case?

They are having a horrible effect on the Markets.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yeah. Stuff that was dried up, and never to be seen again due to the rather disastrous effects of the Merit system on the market actually became AVAILABLE again! HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE!

    [ QUOTE ]
Inflation is out of hand. This is due to multiple things.

    [/ QUOTE ]

The inflation is not AE's fault. It's the fault of greedy sellers and stupid buyers (not always both at the same time though).

    [ QUOTE ]
As you have noted they are causing extra server down time

    [/ QUOTE ]

Again, I challenge you to show ONE update since the advent of AE that was SOLELY comprised of PL/Farm/Exploit fixes. Unless you can actually do so, your accusation of "extra downtime" is unfounded.
  21. Again, how many enemies in the system? And would there have been legitimate uses for the green mitos?

And, again, if it was so obvious, why wasn't it found by someone (like yourself for instance) in beta?
  22. [ QUOTE ]
So, the Devs were not aware that the added feature where one could select the min/max level of a mission, coupled with the fact that the Mitos were left in the AE pool only have their attacks at higher levels, would cause a booming exploit...?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Quite possibly. Again, there a TONS of variables in the MA system. Overlooking something even as crazy as this is possible.

And remember, they're not always looking at the game. They're also looking at all the under-the-hood code too. So, sometimes, it's not always IMMEDIATELY apparent what certain decisions will trickle down into.

And yeah, sometimes it's possible for a dev to have their head firmly planted someplace dark and poopy-smelling about things that almost screaming "OBVIOUS".

Then again, if it was quite that obvious, why wasn't this reported way back during beta? Or shortly after release of i14?
  23. [ QUOTE ]
but the potential exploitation has already turned farming into a harmful habit.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Again, fix most of the exploits, you fix the situation.

This will take time. This will not be simple, straightforward, or pretty.

And this is something that can ONLY be worked out in the live environment. Simply because the test environment simply CAN'T accommodate the number of people required to vet it pre-live.

Anyone who thought any differently (or still does) is simply naive. At best.
