  1. Hey everyone.

I've not been playing a lot lately, due to work, but been with CoH since beta, on and off lately though. I have to say I'm really bummed, as this was my first MMO and it's still my favorite. The genre is perfect for me, I loved the customization of the characters, and the "feel" of the powers as they activated (compared to same 'ol casting animation for nearly every spell on other MMOs.) I sincerely hope there is another game like this soon. I'll sure miss it.

I wouldn't mind a "Firefly" sort of game either. Would be like an MMO version of "Freelancer" which I still pathetically find myself playing now and then no matter how old it is.

I made an EM/WP, and it's up to 8 I think. One thing I noticed that I really like, is when a mob is stunned, the assassins strike gets a red circle around it, I think meaning that it's 100% chance to crit or something. Not sure about that, but it seems like it's working that way. Pretty cool.

Oh LOL! I made elec last night. Wish I had another slot on that server to try energy. Maybe I'll make on another server and transfer if I like it.

Sounds like fun. I'll give it a shot. Thanks BrandX.
  6. Thanks for the thoughts you two. I was looking on the servers I play tonight, and it seems the variations of my chosen name are already taken. I suppose when I made Captain Morgan back in 2004/5 it may have been original, but no longer (my costume then was pretty dang acurate, I must admit.) Oh well.

I guess now I'm wondering if there's a primary that's particularly good for assassin type play, and if there's one that's particularly good for sustained dps. Perhaps one that can excel at both dependent on the build? I played a rogue on wow for a while, and had different builds for 1on1 quick kills or stun locking, and one for sustained dps. Anything something like that for CoH?
  7. I haven't played a stalker since like 2 months after CoV came out (been gone a while,) and I'm wanting to make one that definitely requires a sword for a weapon, and a secondary that doesn't have "major" constant visual effects on the costume. From what I've been reading, broadsword isn't really a favorite primary for........anyone, but I'm not ruling it out. I played katana on a scrapper way back then, and it felt like I was playing tennis (backhand, wait, forehand, wait, etc) but I don't know if ninja blade is like that or not. Looking at dual blades as well. Secondaries it seems like SR, Regen, and WP are the choices, and maybe Nin.

Any thoughts on decent primary/secondary combos? I'm pretty open minded, and can have fun with nearly anything.

    Thanks all.

Edit: I guess the word I was lacking when I meant combo recommendations was by way of symmetry between the two.

Id still suggest Kin for your support, great to heal a melee character, and offers plenty of great combat buffs. maybe with something like sonic blast 2ndary to help soften up targets further.
We will probably try this if she wants to try something else as a second character. Thanks for the suggestion.

LOL! My 90 lb. black lab has learned how to tap you when he wants something. To get me out of bed, he climbs up next to me, lays one front foot on my stomach, lifts it up and lets it drop repeatedly. If I'm on the couch with the laptop, he taps the couch. Silly boy.

Unless it's someone that actually knows how to play an emp, they're pretty useless.
I totally agree. I can't remember what my emp defender's secondary was..... I want to say electric, but I'm not sure. All I know is, I made it with the complete mindset of buffing, main healing, and blast when that other stuff not needed and I had decent endurance. I loved it, although it's gone. In fact, that's probably why I liked playing a main healer as paladin, priest, shaman, and druid on WoW lol.

Say, if any of you are interested in an experienced healer/buffer, I'd level another one, though I would prefer to not have to solo it. That sux balz. I mostly play on Freedom, second on Victory, but I really don't care what server since we can send cash anywhere now.

    I'm Eastern time.
  10. Hey guys. Got her to play again tonight. Made her a Fire/Rad corrupter to go with my StJ/WP brute. Adjusted her movement keys, mouse speed, and a few other things. Messed around town in the tutorial for a while so she could get used to targeting and killing. Finally got out to Atlas, where buying enhancements got her all confused for a while again again LOL. So, we did the first set of missions and got to level 3. She's already moving around a lot better. Still over running stuff, but much better than the other day.

We found that the brute kills stuff before her fire powers go off a lot, so I told her to keep tapping the power key, and it will select the next closest guy in her view to fire. She liked that a lot instead of clicking to select next guy then going back to hit key again.

Thanks again for all your help. Look for us on Freedom. Hockeytown and Tamales.

I'm not sure what cockles are, but they sure are warm.
Sorry, I didn't mean to offend. I've just not seen any since I've been back. I loved my emp defender, so much so I did a lot of healing and buffing when I played WoW.

Great suggestions, and I agree, thanks. We were talking about it at bowling tonight, and she's going to try what I do. I like to set my movement keys to the left hand home keys ASDF. F- forward, D - back, A and S strafe. Been doing that since Decent in mid 90s. Then I put next enemy on C and nearest on V. Everything else around the home keys are usually binds to macros or certain powers like MM robot commands. Commonly toggled stuff on MB4 and 5. We'll see how she does with that.

They can bring to bear an immense variety of soft controls, buffs, de buffs, and DPS all in one AT.

Kinetics is probably king of the buff sets with very little reason to want else in the team. Emps pff, FF so obsolete these days sadly, Dark/Dark are still more a form of controller in a defenders skin.

Then again not that I am hating on defs. give me 7 of them in any power set mix when I run my PB and I am superman.
I think what they meant was in the context of my wife learning to play a video game that's more complicated than finding hidden objects. Kin/energy would be really busy and she's struggling just moving from point a to b lol.

I am a bit bummed to find emp defenders are like dev blasters these days. I remember when emps where really desired on teams.

    Thanks for the reply.

I think what we are going to do is a Fire/Rad corrupter. That way she can blast away for a while, then throw in some debuffs once she gets comfortable. I mean, she literally cannot control the character just walking around. Add in targeting stuff and using powers..... she's overloaded already. I guess she could simply debuff while I kill with the StJ/WP brute if she wants too. One or the other. Plus she'll have a heal, AM, and mutation would be a nice panic button if I get overzealous (likely .)

I appreciate all the replies everyone. Keep 'em coming if you have any other ideas. Actually, leveling builds (or links to) for those ATs/power set combos would be absolutely awesome if you know of any. Most on the forums are 50 builds. I remember there being more leveling build guides in the past.... I'm a "respec at a certain point or two" type of player. Of course that was back when we had to do trials to respec. I remember getting to the one in terra nova with super speed sucked balz.

There's been a lot of great suggestions here in this thread. I remember back when CoH first came out it was the first MMO Mrs. Z and I played. We used to team with her playing a Scrapper and myself on a Ice/Emp controller. I know the combo was especially potent, however we didn't have to deal with the KB involved with Energy Blast.

Either way, I'm a firm believer in the family playing together, so this warms the cockles of my heart!

Thanks Z. I actually had to talk her into it. She's going to school for computer information systems, so I told her 'if you want to be a geek, you need to learn to play video games!' I think she likes the basic concept, but it's reminding me of when my Mom got her first computer and me trying to tell her what a double click was over the phone. LOL. "No Mom, you can't wait 3 seconds between clicks." "Mom! You can't let the mouse move when you do it." "No, the left button. If I want you to click the right button, I'll say right click."

I really like this idea. She could just blast for a bit, then throw in some debuffs once she gets used to that. Fire/Dev blaster was my favorite ever toon back in the day (but they got unOP'd while I was gone LOL. Actually, devices got red-headed-step-child'd IMO.)

At least this is my experience with my wife. But, we have fun, kill stuff, make jokes. To give you an idea i 50 about 0nce every 2 weeks on my own. it would be once a week, but I get distracted with alts. With my wife I am earning exp at a very very glacial pace. But again, it's the journey, not the destination.
Totally agree on the first point. 50 in two weeks? Holy crap! I must be doing something wrong on my own.

Yes, wife is on free account. Mine is pay. I could not live with two char slots..... or even 20.... lol

Grouchy, not a bad idea. Maybe after she gets used to blaster, I'll step her into a corrupter or defender. She really doesn't get the idea of buff/debuff, or really the basic principles of hit %, slow, or any of it yet.

For her, a blaster (though probably not energy since managing knockback might be a problem) would probably be the easiest to get into with you duoing. Note to blasters fans: I'm not saying blasters are easy, but as long as someone is keeping the mobs off of them they can dish out damage with relative safety. A defender would also be a good choice, but one of the less active primaries would probably be better than kinetics. I would recommend sonic, cold, or thermal as ones that are mostly buffs and/or heals early on but with enough debuff powers to keep them from being boring. As far as secondaries anything would be fine though, again, energy might be tricky.
I completely agree. I've already sent her an email at work to explain why, although she does not really understand how stuff works yet. I told her that a blaster would let her concentrate on one or two things, instead of 4-5 things she would need to think about with the defender she has. I think she was afraid of the glass part of the glass canon description I gave her about blasters, but like you said, I'll be there to take care of that. I think soloing a blaster as a first character would probably suck for a new player that has as few gaming skills as her, but she won't be playing if I'm not. I do agree that if you have a decent meat-shield with you, blasting can be pretty simple.

    Thanks for the reply.

The way the combo points work is: you have 2 types of powers: Combo Builders and Finishers. You attack with Combo Builders and it builds up to 3 combo points. Then you attack with a Finisher and it uses the combo points to buff the damage of the attack.

It's a lot simpler than it sounds once you start playing it. You don't have to use the combo builders in any particular order, and you don't have to build up 3 of them before you use a finisher. The Build Up power in the set gives you a 50% damage boost instead of 100% (or 80% for a non-scrapper), but it gives you 3 combo points instantly.

Titan Weapons is a little different. It has the Momentum mechanic. That means your first attack is going to be slow. REALLY slow. But your next 3-4 attacks will be really fast. It has a lot of AoEs in it, mostly cones.
I've played a rogue in wow, and street justice sounds a lot like that. Might work well with the hockey player theme.

TW might frustrate me a bit I think. I'll make a couple on another server and try it out.

What do you think of StJ with WP? I always liked regen, but I know it does not play like I remember it in days of old.

BTW, I've read at least one of your guides. Good stuff.
  18. Well, we probably won't do much more than our 2 person team for a while, but I still agree with you all that kin/nrg might really frustrate her.

I was thinking about that, dominator or corrupter. Besides that, brute and stalker are the only ATs available to her on that side. Controller is also not included. Yeah, I'll be talking to her. After all your suggestions, I think the kin/nrg defender is asking for frustration for her. I mean, I got her the Harry Potter game some years ago, which was just walking, jumping, and clicking on stuff. She had to have me move the guy around while she told me what to do. LOL.
  19. Anybody tried street justice or titan weapons? I had the points, so I bought them. Street justice sounds like a WoW rogue with the combo points. Titan sounds kinda funny to play.
  20. Wow! Thanks for all the replies.... and fast!

Yeah, I was a little concerned with her set choices, but I didn't want to make her use something she didn't think would be fun. I don't so much mind the knockback from energy, but mixing it with kinetics made me a little doubtful, as she would need to stay near me for both of us to get the heals and power buffs. Maybe I'll try to explain that to her and see if she'll switch to something else.

What I meant by her not doing damage very effectively was just that she has a hard time moving+selecting mob+activating power ATM. Boy, that really makes me worry about kinetics again.....

Can you make a brute start off as a hero now? I didn't know that if so. My every-night game play was back in CoH beta to like a couple months after CoV. I've been back since last... Sept. I think, so I've picked up on some of the new stuff (and seen a few old chars have lost their OP glory lol.) Perhaps I'll try the SS brute with inv or stone. My dude is a hockey player, so that kinda works beating on people.
  21. I got my wife to try playing CoH on a freedom account, and I'm wondering if anyone would care to suggest an AT to match what she chose to try to play. She chose a Kin/Energy defender, purely because it sounded fun to her, so that's cool. Keep in mind, she has never played a game in first or third person, so just walking around is a challenge for her LOL.

I was thinking a scrapper might work well, like spines or something, as I'd like to try to keep mobs off her, but since she will have trouble doing much damage, I figured a tank would make leveling a bit slow. But, I'm totally open to suggestions for anything. If you have power set suggestions, that would be great too.

    Thanks all.
  22. I hope this helps others out there with similar problems getting the lock up on dialog boxes. I found that both machines would enter the game on safe mode, but both froze on the dialog boxes. So, I asked myself what these two machines have in common; BitDefender antivirus.

I went into the settings under antivirus, selected exclusions, and then excluded processes. I selected the cityofheroes.exe file under the city of heroes folder, and bingo all fixed. This did not work on the main machine at first, until I discovered under the NCsoft folder I had another city of heroes folder with another cityofheroes.exe. I excluded that process and bingo, that's working now as well.

I'll have to figure out why I have two folders. I pretty sure it's because I tried to save some download time by copying the entire folder from the laptop. I'll test to see if renaming or moving it kills the game or not.

Anyhow, I hope that helps someone else out. Check your antivirus settings, and try excluding the cityofheroes.exe process.
  23. Hello. I have CoH on both my laptop and main machine.

The laptop freezes when I click an NPC and dialog box pops up. I see box, but no text, and freeze. i5, 310M video card, all low settings, 4gig ram.

To test if it was the laptop, I went to main machine. This one freezes on loading screen before getting to login. i5 2500k, GTX560ti, 8gig ram. I play BF3 on this machine, so rolling back drivers would be a bit of a problem, and besides, I already tried the old drivers on both machines to no avail.

Any help would be great. I'm frankly surprised that I had the issue on both machines.

    Thanks everyone.
  24. OP, nice! I'm a Fire/Dev returning from a LONG time off, and this looks like a very fun build. I realize that Fire/dev is not like it was pre-villains, so I've been looking for a new fire/ build. I think this could be very fun. Thanks!
  25. Yes, oh yes. I remember the old days. I used to pull entire sections of zones, probably like 30-40 mobs, to a corner and AOE them to dust. I know that's gone, and though it was so much fun, I realize was totally ridiculous LOL. I'm just looking to adjust to the current game properties.

Thanks for the welcome back BTW. This game was always plentiful with nice peeps.
