You dont need purple to enjoy the game at a high level... my very first and second toons.. A Stone/Mace Tank and a Kat/Inv Scrapper are STILL only have ++SO's and I run them just fine.
Not having the upper bling/bling does not stop you from enjoying the game, only your perception does that -

Marketeers get the PvP rewards without PvP. And the drop rates are still so low that many PvP players won't ever see them. -

I must confess that is a number that I use to purchase a lot of salvage.
