You can always tell when one side has taken a position they can't defend.

Pretty much. So why do you continue to take that side?

What we have here is an example of what's known as "quotemining." It's a well known tactic used by dishonest people who know their argument is false.

Quite telling of just how bad of a time the side using it is having and that the person using it knows they don't have a leg to stand on with their argument.

Let's see, I've quoted posts in full. i have allowed for context, I have replied to those quotes. No quotemining. But the dishonest implication in your post does lend more weight to my statements about the "pro" side lacking arguments they can back and resorting to outright dishonesty.

Again, thank you for proving my points.

    Uhm...

You seem mighty free with throwing the word "dishonest" at anyone who says anything about your responses that are not in full agreement with them. Dishonest?!? Snarky and lighthearted... sure. But I challenge you to find a single dishonest thing about anything I've said.

    Go ahead...

Go back and read what I've actually said.

Then point out a dishonest statement on my part.

Then, when you fail in that, I'll be waiting for an apology... in vain I'm sure, but feel free to surprise me.

People feel so entitled and get so defensive. Geeeze. So excuse me if I DERAIL YOUR ENTITLED DOMINATION OVER THIS THREAD.

I spoke with Tycho and Gabe at the Comic Con and they were as impressed as we were at the growth of PAX. I mean going from 12k to 37k a year later is really impressive. I asked if they thought it would increase even more this year and they said it was hard to believe it to be possible. I mean that's close to 10% of the entire population of Seattle.

I think it's going to be awesome though and want to see more posts about people going and what they will be doing? As long as that doesn't offend anyone who thinks they own this thread now.

Just getting caught up in the daily drama of much ado about nothing. Not interested enough to check back too often. So I skimmed and responded where I thought appropriate.

Carry on with your event-planning... yeesh! You'd think it was somehow important and people traveling from miles around to attend and were tying to get the most out of it.

I generally have a lot of respect for your opinions, but implying that anyone who dislikes the decision made by marketing in this instance is somehow being unreasonable is simply something I can't agree with.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I never said that. I said I believe (and still believe) that the majority of reasonable players don't begrudge NC for creating exclusive marketing giveaways.

There are lots of decisions that either the dev team or NCsoft in general make that I either disagree with, or which go against my personal preferences (which are two different things). But thats not the same thing as saying I believe they are idiotic, incompetent, ignorant, unresponsive, or poor decision-makers every time they make a decision I disagree with.

I'm disappointed I missed the last double XP weekend. I do not believe NCsoft had an obligation to check with my schedule first. I can be disappointed in something without thinking that that fact alone makes the source of my disappointment deficient.

I also stand by my assertion that it is unreasonable to presume that being disappointed in a circumstance carries with it the presumption that someone made an error to create that circumstance. If I end up not getting the costume option, I'll be disappointed. It won't change my mind that NCsoft is being completely reasonable in its approach to marketing exclusives. I'm saying that with the full knowledge that there is very little probability of NCsoft being at a public venue anywhere within two thousand miles of me.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Alright, lets run with your example. Let's say, for the sake of argument, NCSoft decides for marketing reasons to only have Double XP Weekends for logins from the states of California, Oregon and Washington.

So, if you want to experience a Double XP Weekend, from here on out you have to either live in one of those three states or plan a vacation around being in one of those three (along with all the associated expenses) during the Double XP Weekend. And for extra fun, they'll only announce them a few weeks in advance.

If you don't like it, tough. Life's not fair and you have no reasonable reason to complain because it rewards people who are helping the economy close to their HQ (which is good for the HQ) and shows "love" for the people who choose to live close by. You have just as much opportunity to move to one of those three states or make sure you're in one at the exact right time as anyone else so, by the definaition of those for these con giveaways, it's completely an utterly fair.

Should NC actually make such a marketing decision, I predict widespread fallout, which is why they won't do it. It would anger to many people. However, the costume/temp power crowd, we'll they're expendable, too small to matter. NC knows this move angers and disappoints part of their population, they just flat out don't care, that part is too small to worry over.

Is that how things should be? Who knows. NC is a business. They do what they do to make money (preferably lots of it). They don't care if what they do is fair until enough people decide it isn't and it starts to hurt their bottom line. Then they care, but only then. Everything else is just background noise they can ignore. That's not evil, it's just business as usual.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I think that may just be the best worded, utterly nonsensical argument I've ever read.

    Not the same.

    Not even remotely the same.
  6. Oh and as I said the last time the crazy rants (as opposed to the constructive suggestions) started about the Freak Tank costume:

    Much ado about nothing.
  7. A few things to that:

If they sell it, you will have people complaining that NCNC is greedy, grabbing for money, and that CoX is becoming "all about microtransactions". And no matter what the price is set at, it will be "too high" for many.

Also, convention give-aways are a tradition dating back 20+ yrs. A large majority of game (video and otherwise) throw out these small, essentially meaningless and trivial items as a "thank you" for people coming to see them.

There is no pleasing people. So NCNC is going with the established procedures/conventions. Can't blame them for that.

All that having been said, I would like to see NCNC send 2-3 people from different areas of NCNC (say Ex/LH, Posi/Castle and/or SexyJ/BaBs) to at least one East Coast convention every 3yrs or so. When/if they do so, they can give away "supercodes" that grant 2 out of 3 (or whatever) of the special West Coast convention giveaways.

I say this because I think it would be good business and... well... because I'd probably bet to go.
  8. [ QUOTE ]
But in order for the paid respecs to affect the economy to a significant degree beyond the other respecs that are readily available, people would basically need to buy enough respecs to finance City Of 2 with full power customization, seamless zoning, vehicles, personal living quarters, and much, much more. And personally, that's a sacrifice that I'm willing to make.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Ditto.
  9. [ QUOTE ]
For 3+ years CoX only asked us all for a Subscription Fee. And for the we got 2/3 Free issues per year. And everyone was happy.

Then they tested the waters with the First Microtransaction.. Good versus Evil goodie pack.. then was another goodie pack.. then more and then the bridal pack.. then server transfers.. then name changes.. then more slots.. now respecs..

    [/ QUOTE ]

First off, you're wrong. The first micro-transaction was the ability to purchase the extra goodies from the CoH Collector's Edition (Power-Slide and cape IIRC) and that was available less than 1 yr after game launch. Most people didn't care, but those that did liked it (and were thankful we didn't have to spend $60+ for the boxed product... which some were considering). And oddly... the world didn't end. The GvE goodie-pack was an almost identical situation a few years later. Again.. the world didn't end.

Second, they gave us features that were not available to us before (transfers, slots, renames), but attached nominal fees to them. Yes, partially to make money, but also partially to help with the additional infrastructure required to support these services.

Third, they've added one "standaolne/unique" costume/emote pack, which helped pave the way for VEATs coming an issue earlier, which was a huge boon to red-side. Now they've added one more way (in addition to 4 existing methods), for those that don't want to/can't earn it the old-fashioned way, for players to obtain a wanted feature. You don't care for em? Don't get em. I probably won't buy a respec, but did get the wedding pack. That was my choice. You have the same choice. Don't like it? Vote with your wallet.

Fourth, at no time was "everyone happy"... Ever.
  10. [ QUOTE ]
    [ QUOTE ]

why would you do that though. why pay 2/3rds of a monthly fee for something you could earn the cash for in less than a week? (less than a day if you want to)

I understand why they'll make this option available but still, why do this when you can earn it easily in the game?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Uh, well... let's take your logic and look at it the opposite way. I earn ten bucks in about 8 minutes while sitting at my cubicle at work. Why spend a week, or even a day, or even an hour grinding away in the game for something that only cost ten bucks, which I can easily earn in about 8 minutes out-of-game?

For those not hurting for money in real life, who want to play the game, not grind to earn influence, this makes MUCH more sense, doesn't it?

So for those who'd rather pay real cash for in-game benefits, better that they get it from NCSoft than from RMTers.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    <Does the math>

    DAMN!

I want to make over $150k/yr.

Back on-topic: I'll never understand the logic of complaining when addn'l features get offered, especially when they're features that players have been asking for. It's not as though those that can't/don't want to use the feature somehow have less choices open to them than before...

Also, the prices are extremely reasonable, compared to their (current) competition. That includes games with monthly subscription fees.

Not gonna spend $10 for a respec, but still want to get one?

    a) Use a freespec. There's one with pretty much every issue
    b) Run the respec trial. Avaiable multiple times.
    c) Get a respec recipe in a drop, or buy one from the Black Market/WWs.
    d) Use a vet respec. You get one, per toon, per year.

On average, most players get 3 respecs/yr per toon (2 Issue freespecs + 1 vet), without any effort. If you're blowing through that, I'd suggest testing builds on Test Server before actually respecing on live and planning your builds (using Mids) more in advance.

Heck, I have 4 vet-specs and have run the respec trial only once with most of my (high-to-mid-lvl toons) and almost all of them still have 4-5 respecs in the bank. I've just been using the freespecs every few months.

So, I will probably never make use of this feature. But I like the idea of it being there... just in case.
  11. [ QUOTE ]
Hmm... don't think I'll ever have any use for it. But yay for more options.

  15. Ok, so I have another (stupid?) question: Taunt and procs.

In PvE, taunt is an auto hit targeted AoE power. If I slot a proc, like Perfect Zinger, does it have an automatic chance to proc on all targets that get hit by the taunt effect? I'm not talking about gauntlet, but specifically of taunt/confront etc powers.

It seems that it should. Does anyone have any experience with this?

  17. [ QUOTE ]
    I stand corrected.

I checked with our Engineering team to make sure that this is accurate. I didn't want to state something and then have to correct myself again.

    1) If a player logs in during the two free character slot "gift" window, then those slots are placed in player's character slot inventories. Character Slots within your inventories can never be removed, even after the gift window closes.

    2) If a player NEVER logs in during the character slot "gift" window, the window closes, then any new or re-activated player will never get the two free slots.

Please note that the free two slots are only being given to "active" accounts that Log into the game during this gift window. If your account is active, but you've never logged in, you're not getting your two free slots when the window closes.

    3) Once a character slot (via Veteran Reward, free gift or purchased slot) is placed within a Player's Inventory, then the order in which they redeemed is irrelevant.

When we decide to end the two free character slot window, we will give advance notice.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    See? Much ado about nothing.

    Silly GF! Silly overreacting community!
  18. [ QUOTE ]
In this case, people have a legtimate reason to complain. The original annoucement from Positron said they are giving two free characters slots to all accounts. He said that in clear, no incertain words. Now was are hearing from Ghost Falcon something. "What we are giving is a limited time oppurtunity to get 2 free character slots. Redeem them NOW before it's too late." That is a much different thing from what Positiron annouced. To bit it mildly, they have been deceptive.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Positron talked about people getting free slots. That was not, however, the official announcement. Here is the exact note in question:

    [ QUOTE ]
For a limited time, all accounts that log into the Live Servers will receive 2 free Character Slots. This is for a *Limited* time only.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Calling the devs "deceptive" (aka liars) is not only uncalled for, but unfounded in this case.

You should be extremely judicious when using the word "deceptive" when describing someone or their actions. Deception, in that conotation, implies intent. And if you really think that there was a deliberate intent to mislead you... you my friend have some issues.

    Descalier said: [ QUOTE ]
GF, that was really unclear from the patch notes. It sounded like getting them was available for a limited time, not that you'd lose them if you didn't use them.

    [/ QUOTE ]

That is how I read the patch notes for I12 as well. The interpretation of gine out the granting of 2 free character slots "new" accounts would be limited was teh most logical interpretation for me.

This is the 6th time I've rewritten this paragraph. Previous versions had very strong language. All I'm going say is this as a compute professional myself. I'm not pleased at all on how Ghost Falcon is telling is us they've implemented the 2 free character slots. There is a better way of doing it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    [/ QUOTE ]

Here's where I agree... to some extent. The patch notes clearly say "all accounts that log into the Live Servers will receive 2 free Character Slots". While it mentions a "limited time", the logical interpretation is that, so long as one logs in within the "limited time", one receives the slots. There is no mention of needing to assign them or use them, lest they be lost at a later date.

I read this as functioning much in the same way as the anniversary badges (except, obviously, they are not character specific). So long as you log in during the "limited time" window, you get and keep them.

If this is, indeed, not the case, then that statement was [u]extremely[u] poorly worded. If that's the case, then there needs to be a clear restating of this issue, including announcements at the login links, and a very long window before unused "freebie" slots are revoked. And by that I mean 1-2 months. Bear in mind this is the summertime and people are often on extended vacations w/o game access.

It's my hope that GF worded his post poorly, and that this is largely much ado about nothing. Wouldn't, after all, be the first time a dev did this.

Also, the question of "what slots get used first", when one has a mix of "freebie", vet and purchased slots, needs to be addressed as well.
  19. [ QUOTE ]
    Wait, wait, wait.

Are you saying I could redeem the slot, make a character, and then after they change the policy, I might delete the character, but lose the slot also?!

Oh that would suck. I always have a bubble of of chracters I havent finalized or that I later decide to delete and decide to remake on my other account, etc. I'd hate to see a CHARACTER DELETION also delete the slot.

I would hope that once a slot is redeemed, you can never lose the slot ... empty, deleted or otherwise.

Or am I in a panic about nothing?

You Sir, are indeed in a panic about nothing.

    [ QUOTE ]
To those complaining that they can't claim slots, remember that the free ones could only be claimed for a short amount of times while veteran and purchased slots have no limit.

[/ QUOTE ]Completely incorrect. I have friends who are still sitting on (all of) their freebies, meaning the i12 slots plus whatever vet slots they have. You were only AWARDED THEM temporarily, but you will have ACCESS to them FOREVER. They function just like purchased or vet reward slots. In two years, if CoX is still here and if you hadn't added a slot anywhere, you would still have your i12 freebies.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Actually, the two free slots that were launched with the Character Slot service / Issue 12 *will* end at some point in the future.

If you have not claimed or assigned those slots to a server, then after the window closes, you won't get those two free slots.

This was noted in the Issue 12 Release Notes.

We have not yet announced when the window for claiming the two free character slots will end, but we will give advance notice prior to ending it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

GF how does the game decide which of the assigned/applied/claimed slots are "freebie slots" and which are vet/purchased ones?

I purchased 15 addn'l character slots on top of my 4 vet slots and 2 freebies. I've been distributing them amongst the 2 servers I play on (Guardian & Infinity), but still have 6 ones open right now, that I'm waiting to assign as they are needed.

My worry is that if the time-limit to claim the "freebie slots" expires, I may loose 2 of those remaining slots because the game attributes them to "feebie slots" rather than purchased ones. To confound the situation a bit, I think that I always purchased addn'l slots while unused ones remained (in other words, I didn't use up my "freebie"/vet slots before I started buying.

    Stalker Update

Increased Stalker Melee damage multiplier from 0.9 base to 1.0 base.
Increased Stalker Hit Points multiplier from 0.95 to 1.125
All Stalker melee attacks now have a chance to critical while not hidden. This chance is equal to 10% plus 3% per additional team member within 30’ of the stalker at the time of the attack. This only applies to PVE targets. Stalkers old chance to critical Held or Slept targets now only applies to PVP targets.
The Critical portion of Energy Transfer operates exactly as if you were criticalling from Hide -- it eliminates the Self Damage, rather than increasing damage to the target.
Using an Assassination attack and missing will no longer suppress Hide (though lesser stealth and invisibility powers will still suppress) if the attack misses. If the attack hits, Hide suppresses normally.
Hide Suppression for Stalkers reduced from 10 seconds to 8 seconds.
Assassination attacks now cause a demoralizing effect on PVE targets that survive the attack. Demoralized targets To Hit value is reduced, and the target may be frozen in terror.
