  1. Reading through Darkity's guide to dark/dark, he mentioned slotting Dark Servant with proc IOs. Specifically, he mentioned the Cloud Senses Negative Energy damage proc as a good option for extra damage from the pet.

I like damage-no, correction, I love damage. I want more of it. So this sounded like a great idea. I mean, I'm summoning Fluffy anyway, but what if Fluffy had some bite to him?

So I spent the money on getting the proc IO (Not cheap, it's a rare proc, costed about 30 million to get the recipe for it). I've been watching Fluffy pretty carefully since getting it, and I don't think I've seen it proc yet.

Does anyone else have experience with this? Do proc IOs not work with Fluffy? Or is it just this one damage proc IO that doesn't work?
  2. Ok, so I went back to the drawing board a little. Managed to get over 40% S/L defense, and over 35% Energy/Negative defense. Positional defenses are all 33% or higher. S/L resist is slightly lower, but other resists are higher, and I worked in the 20% status resist IO. Also freed up 3 more slots for more recovery/regen IOs in Health. Here's the new build:

  3. You know what? The search feature is great.

I'm working on the build after seeing StormyDarkness' build. Similar idea, but he did some things differently, which resulted in higher defense, but slightly lower effectiveness of some of the powers...
  4. I've been toying around with a build idea for my dark/dark defender. The goal with this build was to see how "tankish" I could get with it, and I think the answer is "Pretty darn tankish". The end result is that with all the toggles running, I'd have 66.8% S/L resist and 30-33% defense against everything.

The one thing I also wanted to fix in this build is the fact that my Dark/Dark runs out of endurance all the damn time, and with all the defensive toggles I'd be using with this build, it would be even worse. So I looked for endurance reduction in most of my abilities and looked for easy Recovery IO bonuses wherever I could find them. The build manages to keep 3 slots in reserve for i19 as well, all 3 of which will most likely be applied to Stamina for Endurance Mod IOs and the Performance Shifter proc. Here's what I came up with:

  5. Ghostveil

    nVidia Optimus

Yeah, I'll have to register and post there as well, it can't hurt. That said, I installed Starcraft 2 and tried that, and it detected my nVidia card properly, as did EVE Online and several Steam games. So it seems this problem is limited to City of Heroes only. =\

Is there some way to force CoH to use the nVidia card?
  6. Ghostveil

    nVidia Optimus

Just today I got a new laptop, an Alienware m11x. Pretty excited about it, and I've finally gotten around to getting it mostly setup, installed all the Windows updates, etc. After getting the basics setup, the first thing I did was install City of Heroes, to see how well it runs on it.

For some reason, however, City of Heroes is greying out any of the advanced graphics options...I can't enable ultra mode, I can't use anything other than the lowest shadow settings, I can't use anything more than the basic water settings. I've tried to find out if anyone else has had this issue, but I haven't found any other posts about this.

The issue, I think, is that City of Heroes is detecting that I have an Intel graphics card, rather than an nVidia graphics card, and thus it is presenting me with the list of supported options for the Intel card. Essentially, Optimus isn't working the way its supposed to.

Does anyone who has this laptop or a laptop with Optimus technology have similar issues, or am I alone in this?

I'm currently attempting to install other games to see if I can get them detect the nVidia card properly, but that won't help me get City of Heroes working properly.

I have manually white listed both the City of Heroes and City of Heroes Updater executables in my nVidia drivers to run on the nVidia card, and that hasn't helped. When running CoH Helper, no matter what I do, it detects the Intel graphics card, and not the nVidia one.
  7. Just to re-iterate Eveningstar2's post, please read the instructions for the contest carefully.

This is NOT a CoX fanfiction contest. The vast majority of the people who have responded to this thread thus far have completely misread the contest instructions and intent.

So I'll repeat this: THIS IS NOT A CoX FANFICTION CONTEST.

The point of the contest is to re-use CoX terms, such as character names, as the real words they actually came from in a story that can be about anything. Bullet point that spells this out:
    Quote:
Proper names may not be used unless they are being used as a noun and not a name. For example, "SYNAPSE and NEURON fought against each other" would NOT be allowed, but "In the nervous system, a SYNAPSE is a structure that permits a NEURON to pass an electrical or chemical signal to another cell" would be allowed.
Thus a story about how the nervous system works that uses SYNAPSE and NEURON as words in the story would fit the contest (As boring as that story might be...I'm certain others will be far more creative).

TL;DR: Reading comprehension is important, and is lacking in this thread.

    DM/SR build help

Having 45% defense should be enough for ITF, yes. Keep in mind that Super Reflexes has a lot of -defense mitigation in it to help prevent cascade failure.

I'll have to look more closely at your Siphon Life slotting, it might be better than mine (I went with 4 Touch of the Nictus and 2 level 50 damage IOs), but even then, I think there's better possibilities out there.

Do you really use Shadow Maul as a brute? The low DPA and long animation were a huge turnoff for me, it never really fit into my playstyle, especially as a brute, where fast attacks are the name of the game.

If you're like me and want to keep Siphon Life as more of a utility power than a main attack, Shadow Punch has almost the exact same DPA. Additionally, since I picked Ghost Widow as my patron, Gloom is a beastly single target attack with a much higher DPA than anything Dark has to offer (And Dark Obliteration isn't bad either). It's a DoT, so mileage my vary on lieutenants and minions, but on anything boss level or higher, it pays dividends.

Does Hasten really need 4 slots? 3 should be enough to cap recharge on it.

In any event, nitpicking power choices aside, it's DM/SR, it is what it is. If you're defense soft capped (Which you are), it's really hard to go wrong. This is a ridiculously expensive build you're going for, but if you can afford it, it'll be powerful, no question.

One thing you can do if you want to avoid having that 6 slotted Red Fortune set is get 6-slotted Mako's Bite, which I have in Smite, and I have my 6 slotted Touch of Death in Shadow Punch. But again, your power choice may mean that isn't a possibility for you.

I can post my build if you like, it certainly isn't perfect either, but I managed to reach soft cap by using Scirocco's Dervish in Soul Drain instead of Gaussian's. The to-hit buff in Soul Drain really doesn't need to be enhanced, and with a 6th slot used for a recharge IO, Soul Drain actually becomes a decent AoE attack in addition to being a fantastic buff power on its own. I used more slots on Weave and Combat Jumping to make up the difference in defense, but it works just fine.

Fire Melee and Fire Armor is a perfect example of that actually.

I will say, target switching does help with making sure CI hits multiple targets.
Honestly, if Thunder Strike wasn't such a slow attack and if Chain Induction's chaining happened instantly and continued hitting targets even after it killed one, I'd have no complaints.
  11. The AoE damage is pretty decent, but Electric Melee doesn't really begin to shine until you get Lightning Rod, which is a game changer for the set, and one of the most fun powers in the game as far as I'm concerned.

Until then though, the set will probably feel slow, or even sluggish. Two of the main attacks, Jacob's Ladder and Thunder Strike, have pretty significant animation times, and these are the two hardest hitting attacks in the set (Thunder Strike is really the worst, although I can't count the number of times I've used Jacob's Ladder and watched my target die during the long animation time).

Chain Induction is also a really strange attack that needs to be used with a little thought. I've found that opening a pull with Lightning Rod, which is what my instincts tell me to do, makes Chain Induction mostly useless. However, Chain Induction works well on pulls when Lightning Rod isn't available. If you use it at the start, there's a good chance there will be enough targets around for it to chain at least a few times.

The single target damage is pretty poor, owing a lot to the fact that Thunder Strike is too slow to even consider using in a single target situation, and the fact that the other early attacks only deal moderate, rather than high damage.

That said, the AoE damage overall between all the abilities you get is really high, and the set does shine when facing large groups, when you get to see dozens of numbers pop up whenever you fire off an attack.

Electric Melee is definitely a flawed set, but I've enjoyed playing it overall.

I can't comment on Electric Armor sadly, since my Electric Melee scrapper is /regen.
  12. Hee. My answer to slow tanks is very simple, very effective. If a tank wants to herd, I hit damage and accuracy inspirations, hit Moment of Glory, hit Build Up, and then Lightning Rod into the middle of the next pull.

"See?! No need to herd, pull is mostly dead. Next pull!"

No patience for herding on easy content. Steamrolling is better.
  13. I spent double XP weekend leveling an elec/regen scrapper to 41, and I'm pretty disappointed in Chain Induction as well, although for a different reason than you all.

When I made the character I looked at the in game details for the damage powers, and the game states that at level 50, Chain Induction has a ridiculous DPA of like 212. I was sorely disappointed when the reality turned out to be that it had a DPA close to 40 at level 50.

Its a fun set to play, but Chain Induction really feels like a poor ability. Its AoE is almost completely unreliable, it feels more like a single target ability, and its not a very good one at that...

While I think it's great that they have a presence at these cons, is it bad for me to be a little disappointed that they're giving stuff like this away only to those who can attend? People have been asking for a PPD hardsuit for a long time, and now they're giving a power away that'll make you look like you're in one - and be able to fight while you're in it - but it's only being given to those who can make it to one of these conventions. Which means a select portion of the community who are able to go either by virtue of proximity or disposable income (or both), while those who aren't nearby and don't have the money to spend to get there are pretty much left without the same opportunity.

Like I said, not a whine or even a big problem, but just a little disappointment. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of those hardsuits, but the chances of me making it to either Seattle or Germany are pretty much slim to none, and slim just left the building.

I feel the same way. While its cool that people that show up at the conventions get cool stuff, the Powersuit is one of the most awesome designs in the game, and I'd been itching to get into one ever since I first saw it. But I don't have the time nor the money to go to either convention...not the biggest deal in the world, just disappointing is all.
