Both ATs generally have the same problem: namely, when solo, they have a hard time getting to that survival balance between mitigating incoming damage, and doing enough damage to the enemies in return. Or, in short, both ATs were designed with the idea that they would be hiding behind a meat shield.

    QFT

With all this being said, there are some defender primaries which solo easier than others.

    For soloability, I'd rate...

    Dark Miasma
    Radiation Emission
    Storm Summoning

    more soloable than

    Kinetics
    Empathy
    Force Fields
    Sonic

Feel free to chime in if you have had a different experience soloing defenders
  2. Wow, you guys are passin' out enough cyber-ducats to be your own government bailout. Very generous of you all!

Congrats on four years. May you make it another four! (You may need the time to generate enough rewards for an 8 year bash)
  3. Somehow after watching that, I feel...

    dirty!
  4. As a very rough comparison of damage, given the same power, slotted the same way, on the same level toons:

    Blaster: 100% damage
    Corrupter: 85% damage
    Defender: 66% damage

I'm a fan of all three ATs, and if you are looking for the hero AT that solo's the easiest, I'd choose the blaster over the defender. Defenders may be the weakest AT at soloing. I prefer my controllers for soloing over my defenders. Defenders have a very poor ratio of mitigating damage versus dealing damage. Consequently, mobs live longer to attack more. With a blaster, the mobs die fast, so mitigating damage is less of a concern.

Pretty sure we were told "roughly the same as purples" in closed beta, which IIRC works out to 1 per 600 boss kills.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Wow, what a terrific solution to the market supply problem of pool C drops.

    Uhh...wait...
  6. Here here!

Too many darn "farm-apes" around these days. Personally, I find the practice a complete bore and refuse to do it unless I'm focusing on a specific badge.
  7. [ QUOTE ]
Tanker HP cap is 3212.7 hps. The invuln tanker will reach that cap for two minutes at a time while the willpower tank can, with accolades and some IO set bonuses, be at the cap perpetually.

Each tank has its niche in the game. Willpower tanks have no self-heal and only moderate defense, and can get cut down by damage spikes that don't give the high regen time to work. Invuln tanks can avoid those spikes with high typed defense and the self-heal/hp boost can patch over what does get thru, and against s/l damage invuln tanks aren't at risk.

If high hps are what you want, build up a willpower tank. Against a collection of bosses, eat a couple of purples to keep that spiked damage at bay. Against everything else, you should be fine.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Well said!
  8. [ QUOTE ]
    Why do that?

It doesn't fit into the tanker archetypes general attitude, right?

This is one of the reasons that I generally try to avoid inviting tankers to teams.
It is good to see this kind of post, it helps me reaffirm my belief that a good many of them are just too full of themselves.

Some tankers need to take a chill-pill, ease up, and learn to work with a [u]team[u].

I certain hope all those kins that Winters_Rose is kicking put Winters_Rose on /gignore and 1 star rate Winters_Rosein Notes.
    I know I would.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Me thinks someone is a tank-hater. Why are you trolling these boards then?

Heh. I'd be happy to teach anyone my way, but you may lose a lot of respect for my accomplishments if I did so. Seriously, the fact that I continue to make money off the market boggles my own mind.

I may just make a screenshot series of a 2 week period of my marketeering...then start a lecture series called Rich Toon, Poor Toon...

    [/ QUOTE ]

Oh, I'm quite sure you have copier machine working overtime back in the Pingu Base counterfeiting all that loot for you!

Seriously, excellent work, Dude. Have you done a guide about working the market yet?
  10. Yeah, I'm thinking there's gonna be a massive dosing of Gun-Fu Once Going Rogue comes out. I'm thinking of a Dual Pistols/Energy Manipulation blaster.

This erm...'guide' can be interpreted in several different ways. It seems you are responding to someone's guide specifically, which really doesn't help anyone.

    [/ QUOTE ]
If this "guide" can be interpreted several different ways, then I failed to convey myself clearly enough. I refrained from listing any specific guides because it would be a violation of the forum rules, but anyone can see that the practice I describe is quite common, and I meant it in a very general sense. And yes, my tone was not intended to be helpful. I was trying for scornful. Did I succeed?

    [ QUOTE ]
Any assertions that a player that possess Multiple Purple IOs is some how all well built is rather inaccurate. In many instances, Purple IO sets will actually hurt a build's overall performance.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Hardly. Purple IO sets provide enhancement bonuses that are comparable to other IO sets, and their set bonuses function when exemped down below actual level. I cannot think of a single instance where a purple IO set actually hurts a build's overall performance. I will, however, acquiesce that there probably are single instances where a purple IO set actually harms a build, but the single or few exceptions do not invalidate the rule.

    [ QUOTE ]
On the same token, there are many different reasons for a guide. Some players are looking for a 'final' build. Not necessarily something they will level up with or into, but rather something they will be focusing their efforts to obtain.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Granted, but how big is that audience compared to all players using the forums?

    [ QUOTE ]
Claiming 'Purple Builds' are Champagne tastes in the face of beer budgets is categorically false. Every player has the same opportunities to acquire influence/infamy, recipes, and IOs. We all have the same means of income. There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't be planning for Purple IO outside of your own personal desire not to do so.

    [/ QUOTE ]
False? The analogy is quite sound. Your egalitarian assumption is false. It assumes that all players have equal opportunities to acquire influence/infamy except you exclude available play time. The player who can play for 20 hours a week has twice the opportunity to earn influence/infamy than the player who can only play 10 hours a week. And yes, "there is absolutely no reason why a [casual player] shouldn't be planning for Purple IO [sets]," but a standard enhancement build will serve that player better while he/she takes twice the amount of time to acquire a purple IO set.

    [ QUOTE ]
I do agree, the best guides will include level up advice and/or builds that can be leveled into. That doesn't mean every single guide could be written as such.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Granted. Let me ask you this, though, do you honestly believe that every guide author on this forum operates from a base of pure altruism, or is it possible that some use it as a means of serving their vanity and garnering praise?

This "guide" is directed at those players.

On an aside, your guide is excellent and a standard setter. It is sequential, informative and exceptionally thorough. My sincerest regards, well done!
  12. I agree, Memphis! And I think I'm going to put my money where my mouth is. I have a little free time coming up for spring break. I think I may post my first guide focusing on the progression and growth of the AT.

    Stand by...
  13. Guide-Jerk: n. A player who, using Mid's Hero Planner, submits a "pie-in-the-sky,' dream build using multiple unique sets and invention origin enhancements costing 100s of millions influence/infamy in place as a guide for how to build a hero/villain. This player is very similar to the Build-jerk who solicits advice on a similarly constructed build. Also see vain, impractical, callow, and presumptive.

As a professional educator, I've learned one thing--
don't use champagne examples when your students can only afford beer!

For those so inclined, please refrain from advising me to six slot my Haymaker power with six Hecatomb. Let's assume that if I had the resources to invest in purchasing/finding a complete purple set that I would already know how to slot the darn power.

Don't post a guide to show off your ultimate build and try to sound like you are spreading your hard-found knowledge. Such behavior is puerile. One synonym for the word "guide" is teacher. A guide writer should try to be one.

  17. Nice work, HB. You have eloquently and accurately described my feelings about PvP and the PvP Zones. Your experience with MMO PvP seems evident, and I expect that the developers would be wise to pay attention to you.
