I've been having this problem for some time now. I seemed to resolve itself as of i21 (for which I was very happy), but after todays patch its back in force.
Whenever I try to switch zones, enter missions or log into a different character from the selection screen, I seem to have a 50/50 chance of the game just going to the loading screen and sitting there until to boots me back into the login.
When I'm kicked back to the login it will say "Mapserver not found" or something to that effect, and when I try log back in, it first tells me I'm logged in already and then I start from scratch.
Having no troubles with other internet related odds and ends, and it begins happening right after a patch.
Any ideas what it could be? -
((I haven't done anything like this in forever. I hope this sounds right!))
Fogbank found himself hiding under a bus shelter and cursing as the meteors came down, as though the flimsy structure was somehow going to ward off the impending doom from above. Nothing about today had gone right. That crazy blonde who'd given him the job ("find the -me- thats not -me- but people think is -me-", she said) was going to get an earful when he saw her next.
He paused a moment, thinking. Maybe not. She was crazy, after all. You don't want to aggravate crazy.
He'd been in Galaxy for only a few hours, having taken a smugglers ferry to Paragon City just that morning. Given his job as a "post human freelance security contractor" (or hired supervillain mercenary, in the parlance of our times), he'd had found it necessary to make the journey to meet his prospective informant incognito. Last time he was in this town he'd had to cover a whole PPD precinct in heavy fog and hide under a SWAT van before he could sneak away. He was wearing his grey and blue body armor under a bulky jacket and pants, and sweating like a pig all the while. It had taken all his concentration to keep the ever present trails of cloud that normally wreathed him under wraps while he waited for the guy who claimed to be a Portal Corp science type at the pre-arranged spot.
And now there were meteors. Wonderful.
As one came down a little closer, just perhaps half a block away, he decided hanging around longer would be a bad idea even by his very high standards for such things. He was about to join the crowds of running, screaming people (his skills at both running AND screaming well honed by years of henchman work) when the crowd suddenly turned, shrinking away in horror from the shambling, mishappen rock beasts that had appeared with alarming suddeness from around a corner and begun a lurching charge towards the massed civilians.
Definately time to run. No one pays you to get stomped by rock monsters. And he was just about to, he really was, when the closest person to the beast stumbled and fell, a young woman who raised her hands above her head more from instinctive reaction then any real hope it would stop the meteoric fists from coming down. She screamed, but no one looked back in their mad panic.
The nearest star spawned monstrosity reared over her and then flew backwards, a cannon force blast of wind and water smashing it off of its feet and back into its brethren as Fogbank stepped over the fallen woman, jacket cast aside and hood and mask pulled hastily over his head.
"I hate everything forever," he grumbled as he listened to the sounds of her taking to her feet and shouting a grateful, sobbed thanks as she fled. Coils of mist spilling forth around him, wind and freezing water coalescing in the air around his fists, Fogbank strode reluctantly into the fray.
He sighed. No one would pay him for this, either. -
I found myself thinking about the Faces of the City stories when I heard Galaxy was going bye bye. Glad to see more from it, even if it is sadness.

Guitar Rift, a demons/sonic MM who will spam the air guitar emote whenever not otherwise busy.
And Gearspin, a steampunker beam/traps corr.
Really wanted an ill/poison troller, but for the life of me couldn't find a name/costume/concept I liked. -
I think I teamed with you on a Moonfire TF yesterday on my cold/son fender while, very, very sleepy. Hope you're finding Virtue to your liking.
-
How is /thermal for these purposes? I have a ninja/therm MM in the mid levels, and while the I suspect the ninjas will fold too easily for it to be excellent at GM hunting, I might give it a shot once some more levels come his way...
-
I actually have a son/rad corr at 46 or so, but I always get disheartned when I think how much better the rad/son defender seems. :/
Thanks for the ideas though, keep 'em comin'! -
So I'm thinking of using i21 as a way to level up a brand new character that I'd normally struggle to solo with, springboarding off the abundant lowbie teams that always come with a new issue. The current plan is to have something that nothing else in my roster of characters can do, and one of those holes in my armory is something that can solo GMs.
What are some of the better GM hunting builds, and if you have a preference fun wise, what is it?
I know off the top of my head of
Ill/rad
Bots/Dark
Bots/Traps
What else? And whats the most enjoyable? -
I'm having much the same problem, though the wait times are MUCH longer if I let it sit and boot me back to the login screen. Sometimes I'll be able to play hours without issues, sometimes it boots me again and again. Once I'm in a mission or zone its fine, but the loading screen has become a thing of dread for me.

I've been able to set my Oil Slicks off with Acid Arrow (and Drain Life), but I was assuming it was due to reactive interface procs. Do you have that on your MM? If not I wonder whats causing it...
-
I can confirm that pets are still afraid to enter the burning oil slick more often then not.
-
Quick question, if you apply a damage proc to a held/slept/whatever enemy does the double damage activate? I'm assuming not but figured I'd ask to be sure.
-
Hey all,
I've been meaning to make a debuff heavy defender since I got back into the game to help melt down AVs in trials, as well as for general content and all round good times. Both of these set ups sound pretty fun, traps/dark as a proc machine and all the good things traps does, and cold/son as a mighty -res caster.
Any particular pros and cons to either? It'd be nice to be able to solo or hunt GMs or other distractions like that as well with whichever one I build, it its not a necessary requirement. -
Quote:I would consider 'being able to take a few steps' as a fundamental aspect of a character. It's not like this is a power that doesn't give you EVERY opportunity to avoid.
The problem with much of this game is you can just stand there and slug it out until the enemy eventually just falls over, without much of any concern for your environment. The adds in the BAF help some, as does Nova Fist and other mechanics- you actually gotta pay a bit of attention (unlike what I do in many parts of the game, where I alt tab out while powers are animating! why do you think my post count is so high?)
I concur with this. Even the high post count bit. -
You could even look at the purple Fortunata Hypnosis set for poison gas arrow. Its a much cheaper then the other purple sets. It'll still cost you a bit of inf, but should be reasonable.

For what its worth, I recently rolled up a ninja/therm for no real reason. He shredded through the first 20 levels very quickly, but I noticed him becoming much squishier as he moved into the mid 20s. Its decent enough fun though and once the jounin start laying into a boss their KD effects prove more useful on the defensive front then I thought. Gotta be on your toes though, cause when they go down they do it fast.
Theres worse builds for sure, but I think it would struggle at the higher end. If you're just going to 32 though, should be just fine. -
Quote:Nah, he was a villain. A half ***** one, but none the less. This sort of player is the number one reason so many people have mental immunity shtick in place. I'd almost bet real money the guy doing the random mind ****** was a hero.
I could play along with someone who sent me a tell saying "My psychic senses picked up a warning of danger and so I'm scanning the room for people in trouble. Are your character's thoughts troubled? Would you like to respond as my character quickly scans your mind for the danger he sensed?" That's a good way to try and drum up from quick RP from a stranger.
On the gripping hand, if someone sent me a tell saying "My character is bored so he's reading your mind. What are you thinking?" My reply would be "My character is bored and so he walks over and strips you naked and dumps you head first into the toilet. Then he pees on you."
Of the two actions, invading people's minds just because you're bored is far more vile and offensive.
But yeah, idle use of telepathy due to boredom is the most diabolical of sins. You got me. -
Quote:Very minor quibble... by all accounts Zeus slept with anything willing or unwilling, so its not hard to picture any number of demigod by blows floating around. I'm not saying its the greatest character concept ever, but it doesn't automatically equal Statesmans love child either. One last note: I tend to ignore those that RP son/daughter of famous Gods or other figures; in the RP world that's typically a big no-no. Saying you're the grandson of Zeus is no different than claiming to be Statesman's son... you just don't do it.
In general, my answers:
I'm a bit wary of the "powers don't work in the D" reasoning simply because some do, mechanically at least. I can fly in the D, summon zombies and throw fire shields on people. To me its a mix of Zero putting the boot down on people who get too rowdy and plain common sense that people don't engage in violence there. If I do run into it, I generally find a way out if I'm peripherally involved, or offer to take it to the arena. I don't really care for text fighting in any case, so I rarely engage in it unless its someone I know and trust.
RP by level: Works as a guideline for sure. I'm more then willing to bend that rationale depending on circumstance but as a rule of thumb I'm happy to assume a level 50 will be able to take out a level 10 in fairly short order. Certainly something I'd judge case by case, but honestly not something that comes up that often for me.
Powers not in the game, see above. Depends what it is. I have no problem with interesting "colour" powers. "You can talk to inanimate objects? Neat!". If someone goes a bit crazy with them I'll generally make my excuses and get out of there.
Stealth/psi immunity. I once had a telepathic character I tried to RP with who'd try to read random peoples minds when he was bored. Nothing more then that, he just wanted to see what they were thinking. A lot of the time he'd get the "impenetrable mind" reply for one reason or another, and it did kind of put me off the whole idea. All the same I can certainly see why some people do it... theres some creepy folks out there. Personally I'd only go with something like that if I had the powers to back it up, stacked + perception or high psi resists/defences or whatever, but I'd be more then willing to make a case for a particular character concept.
As a side note, in regards to the people who have been dismissive of the "Rp to find out more" lines... I don't really take much interest in that kind of bio myself, but I don't find it a reason to avoid playing with someone. If someone has a great bio thats awesome and I'd take pleasure in reading it, but I'd evaluate my RPz on a case by case basis. Some people just aren't good at writing that sort of thing, I know the vast majority of my characters tend to have a brief, fairly non descriptive saying or two in their bio space. -
Since coming back to the game I've dusted my old Stone/Inv off and have been running him through the incarnate stuff. He's about to get Interface, and I have no idea which way I should be leaning. Thoughts?

lol, I remember how very strongly you feel about dark armor. Duly noted. Endless recharge and endurance sound pretty sweet too, and I understand elec comes with a heal now.
As for maturation, so long as I can get it up to and through the 20s without getting bored and making another Mastermind, its good. -
Server downtime makes me want to build alts. I want to do claws as I haven't done it before, and the same goes for the two secondaries above. Which AT and set combo is the better idea? I've been out of the game a long time, and the numbers dont mean much to me anymore when I look at them.
Early maturation is a big pro here, I don't have the patience to grind up to a good point these days. -
Quote:All of this. You're a winner Fenris.Pocket D
In the Lore for Pocket D, DJ Zero is a rather powerful mutant that can create tunnels and bends in space time. He uses his power to maintain pocket D and has gone to great lengths to keep it a neutral ground. Now here in lies the rub that irritates me so..
- Fights in the D...
I believe powers are suppressed and will not cooperate with someone who wishes to start a fight with me in the Pocket D, although I won't complain about people text fighting with each other in the D, so long as I'm not involved and it's not too obtrusive.
- "I don't take level into account"
Again, I simply won't cooperate with this person if they wish to start a problem. Although financial power and connections might not be covered by the level system. I'd most likely take it on a case by case situation. It hasn't come up all that often.
- "I have powers that don't exist in the game"
It'd have to be case by case. I haven't seen this much myself and if I did, it'd depend heavily on the person behind the other keyboard.
It's possible that they could roleplay it quite well.
And of course if they're the type to have overpowered, non-existent powers then they're probably also the type to not be able to roleplay it well.
- "I'm immune to all Psychics" and "I can see through stealth"
This one I can sort of understand. Some psychic people out there might want to take over your character and completely mind-frog them. Putting in a blanket immunity to psychics is an effective, though extreme method of countering this and, if they can pull it off well, is fairly acceptable unless they wish to extend this into the arena.
Seeing through stealth?
It'd have to be case by case. If the other character has a super-strong sense of smell and my character's stealth wouldn't normally hide their scent then, sure, they can track my location just fine.
On the other hand, if they've a good sense of smell but my character's stealth is simply being super-uninteresting or some sort of 'fades-into-the-background' psychic ability that the other character isn't immune to well...they could smell them but so what? There's a lot of people here and they all have their own scent. And this scent isn't really all that fascinating. I mean, there's a guy over there who smells like cinnamon.
