Quote:Hear! Hear!As to the general comment about sexualizing women in comic books, are women oversexualized? Of course they are. Just like they are in movies, television commercials, and also most of the advertisements in women's magazines whose primary audience is overwhelmingly women. In my opinion, women are exposed to far more oversexualized depictions of women than men are, most of it promoted by or created by other women, and in a far more deleterious fashion. Comic books are a pale reflection of that issue. Comic books don't create the bulk of body image problems for young girls. Comic books aren't the source of most eating disorders in women. Comic books aren't teaching girls what is acceptable - and I don't even think they are teaching boys that either. Comic books are escapist fantasy: the real problem is the exact same fiction presented as reality in mainstream media. We know comic books are fake. But those same female depictions could have been traced right out of the pages of Glamour magazine, except people think that's actually reality.
Also can we all agree that it's just bad art and Penny's costume sucks?
Can the next community contest be redesign Penny's costume? It's terrible as is. Just awful.
No. Really. It's awful. -
I would argue that there is no wrong way to build but there are certainly "better" ways to build. A wrong way would suggest you can make a build so wrong as to be unplayable. That is not the case with CoH.

Is there any time frame as to when Hammi became active on Praetorian Earth? When do the Hammi wars start? I got the feeling it was late 70's early 80's.
Just thought of another one. Isn't there mention of other cities on P. Earth? What's happening to them? -
Quote:Please site examples.
There are countless examples of decisions being made in Paragon City, both local and federal, strictly to benefit criminal organizations and profiteers instead of serving the best interests of its people. Unlike in Praetoria, however, no one has a gun to our leaders' heads, it's just plain old corruption at its best. Authority abuse to prevent impending destruction? Regrettable, but I can accept it to a point. Authority abuse for profit? Much less acceptable. -

Quote:That is a very interesting insight. That's the myth told after the people's minds were addled by Enriche.
The Destroyers, however, remember being there to help Marauder when "he alone, stood by Cole."
And goodness knows how many meta humans were killed by "friendly fire" (read: secret execution) before, during and after the war, all rolled into the combat in order to secure Emperor Cole's vision of a perfect world or to satisfy the egos of the people he brought into his circles of power.
The truth of the Hamidon Wars cannot be trusted because it's all a veil of history rather than the fact of it. Finally, it all boils down to one man's decision to die slowly and afraid in the gilded cage he built for himself and the people around him rather than stand and fight. -
Ditto. I fail to see where this trial is hard at all. Boring? Sure. Hard? No. 6 times. No fails. The extra time was for missing the triple threat badge. Master of... If you failed your doing it wrong.

Where the heck is everyone? It's been dead all week. Is every one taking a break until I23?

Quote:First part. They would be wrong. If it's written by humans it's about humans and can be about nothing else but our motivations. The stories can be poorly written, badly thought out but they are still, ALL OF THEM, about our motivations. There's only 3 stories folks. Man v Man, Man v Nature, and Man v God. I know. It's a little Lit 101 but there it is.To hear some tell it, DC stories are about the motivations of gods and aliens, which is why people (and apparently some writers) can't relate to (or create good stories with) their characters. And that's the context I'm going along with.
I don't really see the point, but if I had to go into it briefly, there is a particular category of manga/anime that I consider a guilty pleasure called "slice of life". Many of the sorts of mundane day to day life problems that go on in those stories are exactly the sort of thing that I tend to dislike elsewhere.
2nd you apparently are an enigma wrapped in a mystery but apparently you like chocolate and peanut butter but don't want any chocolate in your peanut butter. -
Thursdays is the normal maintenance day. We are coming up on a 3 day weekend. Zwill stated point blank no I23 in May. So... Safe to say no I23 today.
My guess is prep for I23 and summer event along with some bug fixes. -
Fantastic Four #33. For a mere $.12 New. Off the spinning wire rack at Dennis's Mom and Pop. If you ask me what a Mom and Pop is I'll beat you to death. Ya' know, if my hip doesn't go out.

Quote:Hmm.. how about this? Every story you've ever read is about human motivations. Is it the more "soapy" elements you have a problem with? Is this right? Can you elaborate? You're still shootin' wide. Boring, or 'mundane' if you prefer, human motivations are generally not my cup of tea (there is at least one area of exception, but for the purposes of this discussion such is moot), but good stories centred on them are certainly possible in any medium with good writing. I wasn't really saying anything about them one way or the other. What I was saying, essentially, is that good writers don't necessarily need those to be a focus, nor do they need to inject those motivations where they don't necessarily belong.
The problem I often see with the handling of DC characters, is that writers overcompensate and become focused on these petty concerns and it either serves to make the stories dull, or provides such an overwhelming dull contrast to the superheroic bits that the fantastic becomes the absurd. -
Quote:Look. I was 14 when the damn thing came out. I saw it FOURTY times that summer. Yeah. Forty. My point is that as an adult with out the misty haze of nostalgia I can see the man behind the curtain. And the fact that every one keeps going on about "the visuals" confirms to me, Joe Campbell not withstanding, it’s a pretty weakly told story. Out side of the space battles (and some times not even then) it's ridiculously stiff. Stiffly acted, stiffly directed. Lucas wouldn't know how to move the camera if he was filming in an earth quake.Lucas and his team invented techniques for filming, sound, and visuals that had never been done. You'd have to watch movies from Pre-Star Wars to understand how different the entire movie experience was. The mind-blowing was not simply from a lightsaber.
Star Wars was probably the most uniquely visceral movie of its time.
The Avengers ratchets up the wow factor when you consider that there really hasn't been an ensemble movie that lived up to the hype and gave each of the main players enough screen time. The X-Men movies were mostly about Wolverine, Jean Grey, and Professor X, while the rest of the team feasted on the scraps. It may not be the quantum leap in technology or visuals that Star Wars was, but there's still plenty of iconic moments and visuals to make it stand out from every superhero movie that came before, for sure, including the previous Marvel Avengers solo movies.
While Avengers might not have the unique visuals that Star Wars did, it has some things Star Wars does not. Better dialog, better direction and better acting. -
So "IF" I understand you no one could write about those things in comics and make a good story about it?
-
Quote:I don't see out side of the SFX that Star Wars had a lot of unique visuals. I mean aside from Vader and light sabers what do you have? That was also a key factor - although it was also one of the big problems Lucas had in getting it made - it seemed like it was such a totally left field idea for a movie at the point in time.
Again, a lot of that is down to the unique visuals - the Avengers doesn't give us anything visually new - it just gives us familar visuals in an awesome way - we've seen superheroes doing superheroic things in modern day environments plenty of times before.
For example, the Avengers is not actually that different from Daredevil - it's just better than it in every possible way. -
I would say I23 is June sometime as the Nemesis invasion is supposed to go all month. Didn't they mention some live stuff happening with it?
-
REDACTED.
Apologies. I misunderstood the point being made. -
Let’s be honest. Star Wars is what it is due to a variety of factors not the least of which is the movie it's self. However I firmly believe that a year either way from its release date it wouldn't have had the impact it had/has. The U.S. (world?) was ready for something like Star Wars at that moment. It was the timing of it that put it over the top.
Avengers for as good as it is, and I would argue it's better then Star Wars, does not have the fortuitous timing of Star Wars and will not have any where near the cultural impact that the original Star Wars had.
I could be wrong. -
You mean the boring human motivations that have been explored by writers like that loser Shakespeare? Perhaps that hack Dickens? Maybe the commie pinko Steinbeck. What about that red neck Williams? How about that thug Hemingway? Yeah. Boring human motivations. No one could make good stories out of that.

Suggestions? Keep in mind that I'm going cheap on this with IO's and will swap out to "higher" level ones when I have the $$$ -
I've been playing around with Mids and can't find any way to get decent damage mitigation out of the set. However it does mad HP and Regen. Am I missing something or is that the way to go?
