  1. Character Name: Perlarosero
    Server: Liberty
Details: What inspired my creation of Perlarosero was the song Dreamweaver and my childhood in Riverside, California. The lovely process of storytelling and the play of make-believe was still alive in that time; often there were frightening stories of the old mission in the city, and occult rituals taking place there. Also, there was happier stories, such as the invisible castles atop each hill around the city that would only come into being once a century, and only for a week. Perlarosero is a guardian of dreams, and his name is Esperanto for "Pearl Dew" after the Cocteau Twins song, "Pearly Dewdrops Drops".

Dreamweaver is Gary Wright's song, and the Cocteau Twins are a subculture rarity from the eighties, very popular among the alternative crowd back then.
  2. Times may have become tough for early twentifirst century Paragon, so any newspaper would declare, although the television news was slowly showing symptoms of decadence and terror, rather than reporting it bleakly. Who wishes to see heroes beaten bloody over and over again, with rare victories, almost always gathered through guile and superior might rather than virtuous strength? Once upon a time it was different, before Superidine stilted the learning of young folk who would otherwise be the bright eyed gentry of the corner five and dime, before the rituals of the Circle of Thorns cast the nightmarish haloes like an apple-green seatide flooding over rooftops and drowning Perez Park. Now, the people turned the television dials to tune in to happy dramas where violence and viciousness was justified by simple lies. Only the newspapers were honest.

Newsprint will tell us part of why our cities are growing in their everchanging forms; but other clues can be seen in the world around us. Once, children were happy, and the adults were trusting and merry folk, cooperative and full of wise craft. The suburbs of Paragon city in the seventies were daydream gardens. Tussels did happen, but when two people wrestled, it was a spry spectacle of playfulness, as when Perlarosero was found covered in mud gripping the wrists of his best friend Shiarin, both laughing hysterically over the patterns that the splattered soil left in their t-shirts. "It is our experiment in modern art," shouted Shiarin, the intelligent scholar of the pair. "Nonsense," retorted Perlarosero, "we are training to be professional wrestlers, so we can be famous and wealthy!" Since no straight story could be taken of the two, it was assumed they were testing the strength of the human form, and subtly structuring the power of their friendship.

Shiarin and Perlarosero were youth who dwelled in the suburbs of Paragon City, the zone once referred to as Pennyfountain Paradise; the reason for its name was due to a festive habit of the populace to adhere polished coins along the paved thoroughfares and cobbled roads in intricate patterns and constructing decorative sprinkler "fountains" to spread water over these designs. A spiral of NASA comemorative golden coins decorated the sidewalk outside city hall, and even until 1981, no one would seriously consider thieving these shining discs of solar metal.

Perlarosero would stroll happily across the golden coins, singing his favorite song

Before the dawn we awake to a silver moon
Floating with poetry of ancient tide
Fly with me through stories amid life's typhoon
And meet me on life's other side...

While Gary Wright had penned *different* lyrics to the song Dreamweaver, which Perlarosero was attempting to sing from hearing it over a static mouthed radio, none seemed to want to correct Perlarosero's childlike emulation of an Irish alto. The misprisioned lyric Perlarosero sang was fit for a city whelmed with water and mist, streets paved with gleaming coins and wishes.

In the golden shimmer of dawn colored hills overlooking the waking churches and temples, twelve year olds sat in the late Spring break, watching the crow-path of jets stream white over their homes to the distant Paragon military airbase. The Star Spangled Banner was on their tongues and in their hearts; no care who was voted, it was always a good man who headed the nation; no care of taxes, for all recieved their hearts' fond desires for life, liberty, and serendipitous happiness. Shiarin's father, a reformed criminal, was indeed reformed -- and spoke before the Unitarian congregation of his old life, a criminal life but devoid even then of murderous hate.

"I would never slay a single person nor desire to. I stole happily from people I'd swear in my heart to pay one day; and so I did pay, spending my time in prison working honest trades." spoke he, and the congregation applauded. No, it was not license plate grafting, it was honest trades that produced immediate goods that others could use: socks, ties, belt buckles.

Perlarosero sat in the dewy hill grass, watching the jets roar overhead, his best friend Shiarin seated in meditative posture beside him, chanting. Green hills dappled gold, apple trees swaying in the near valley grove behind the hills, children singing a soft patriotic hymn til breakfast time came. Perlarosero decided to stray a bit, and wandered the hills into the apple grove with Shiarin, discussing the irreconcilably variances in Judaism and Hinduism.

"Of course the Jews don't like idols and gods, and the Hindus do. Yet you see Sri Aurobindo and Rabbi Mendolitz shaking hands on NBC." said Shiarin, "The New Crusaders of Superchrist may have frightened nations, but all agree that religious freedom is tops."

"Tops," said Perlarosero, "that is a cool word. My grandfather used to say certain things were the tops; but what you say about Superchrist: why talk about it? Superchrist nearly brought our nation to war with itself. Don't you remember the radios saying, `Stay in your homes, this is an emergency,' and then the special broadcast stating that Protestant minister Superchrist was attacking places of worship and people based on religious differences?"

"I remember that and even my grandchildren will hear about it." said Shiarin.

"You have grandchildren? Where do you hide them? Where are they? Wait, there they hop among the trees, white and tiny."

    "Those are rabbits, you numbskull!"

"Hunt the wabbit!" shouted Perlarosero and fled the opposite way of the meandering bunnies, who fed on the windfallen apples. Shiarin gave chase, and the two fled into the dissipating mist -- and fell into the moon itself. For all became white light and softness and strange visions.
  3. Floating some where over the rooftops, Elaida herad the broadcast on her ear piece. She sighed, and dissapeared only to reaper with a flash near the broadcast's origin. wearing a blue skin tight costume with yellow highlights, a blonde wig, plastic pointed ears, a halloween sale tail and a blue veil

Not one to waste time, she looked around, seeing the dead thugs lying on the ground, the four costumed ones standing, and the one on the ground. Without saying aword, she walked over and checked the state of the unconcious hero. Raising her arms, a green glow wrapped around icey fresh as he came to standing, his health and endurance fully regained.

"anyone else hurt?" she asked, seeing no one else badly injued, she sat on the curb, obviously drained. And looking very bored.

  4. Character name: Elaida
    Server:Virtue
    Origin: natural
Inspiration: my first character, enaila, on another server. i played her to 5, got bored, and created elaida(at the time, i just wanted a name that was close to, but not, enaila, no wheel of time reference was intended). a telepath. pretty much. everything after, the tail and etc being "chep props" came after. i'm not sure exactly what her past is, so i'm calling it 'secret.' the sg i made is an intentional WoT ref. but role-playing wise, its a 'cover' to whatever it is that my characters 'secret past' is.

    Character name: Abby
    Server:Virtue
    Origin: Science
Inspiration: boredom, and wanting to go rp heavy with her. i figured that she could be a kid, a 5 yr old. the vaz took her dad, and accident made her a tanker. thats the short version. if you want the long version, go on virtue and get it out of her. its not like its that hard to question a 5 yr old.
  5. Character name:Geariven
    Server:Virtue
    Origin: magic kinetic/energy defender
Inspiration: Started out as something from greek mythology (I'm a fan of mythology in general) and got twisted from there.

    Character name: The Techmonkey
    Server: Virtue
    Origin: tech assault/devices blaster
Inspiration: He's me. Even the name is me (I started calling myself that as a joke...and the joke has kept running). If I were a superhero, I'd be the Techmonkey...using screwball gadgets to fight crime and using a wierd combo-gun held together with duct tape and twist-ties.
  6. LOL Blasted spell check hehe, tnx 4 pointing it out.

How do you figure? The game is a cake walk for the first 20 levels. They could let stroke victims in a retirement home play this game from 1 to 15, if not 1-20.

When you crack 30 or so, come back. Actually, considering your opening phrase, don't bother.

  9. I'd like to create a powertray button bind, but I'm not sure how. For exmaple:

"local I crush your head!$$powexec_name Crush"

Now, I could bind that to the "1" key, but if I want move the Crush power to location 2 I have to rebind it, which can get inconvenient.

Ideally, I'd like to create a button in my powertray that does the above command combo that I can move around the powertray.

    Any help?

Now this doesn't include rains - because rains are 60 sec base recharge (way too high to use every battle - let alone have a 9.4 recycle time with perma hasten). Further, they take too long (20 sec) to do their full damage.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just a bit of clarification. Std rain is 10 sec, lvl 32 blizzard is 20 (wihout the last 15 sec of animation).

    [/ QUOTE ]

I always thought rain of fire was 10 sec animation with 20 sec of damage - but just timed it verify. Rain of fire's animation only lasts 7-8 seconds, but its damage continues for a total of 16-17 seconds. So less than the 20 seconds I originally thought.

Have you timed the animation and damage on ice storm? If it does its full damage in 10 seconds, than I stand corrected.
  16. what a great topic.

out of all my characters I have created, I'll just go into detail about my highest one and so far my favorite.

    Charcter : GunnerGirl

    Server : Triumph

    Archtype: Tech/Blaster

Inspiration: While I had created and mostly played controllers I was in the mood to do some damage. I (being a female) find it hard to make characters that run around in skimpy outfits so I was looking to make something I was comfortable with. As I was designing her I though hmmm ..o O ( she was a soldier or a soldier recruit and had a life threatening accident, though the project she was injured in wasn't approved so in order to keep things hushed she was rushed to a "military approved medical facility",) then she recieved her mechanical arm, her plate over her eye. Just something that evolved while I was in the character creation process.

The story I heard in my head and then felt the need to put it on a file. Thats pretty much it. It normally happens with most characters I create, though some of them, their personalities don't evolve till after Ive played them some, though normally they don't last to long.
  17. They say looks can be deceiving. Nothing about the worn, fraying carpet or the bare concrete walls said anything about the power of the man inside. Even the army-issued metal desk at which the room's usual occupant sat, suggested that the person was anything other then a minor functionary, just another paper pusher in an armed force that was in the midst of a perpetual boom in paper pushers.

There were hundreds of these rooms just on the air force base alone. World wide? The # could be in the hundreds of thousands. But just as you can't judge a book solely on its cover.. you could not judge Maj.General Thomas Austin by his office.

The one impressive thing about the General's office was the security on his door. To just REQUEST access, you had to enter three codes on the door itself. To actually get INTO the office, you either needed an authorized fingerprint scan and retina scan, or the verbal permission of the office's occupant. It was widely debated on which was harder to get.

Maj. General Austin had been assigned to the operational group
"Section Twelve" just before the Rikti crisis had hit. He was in fine shape, for a man in his 50's. He still kept his hair (although it had turned grey) in a regulation high and tight. His brown eyes had a habit of staring holes into someone like a laser, when he was angry. But he kept a low profile, because according to "official" US records, he worked for a section that didn't exist.

Section Twelve was officially "off-the-books" when it came to
oversight. The US Department of Defense had not wanted it widely known that they maintained a "strike force" of metahuman heroes to eliminate those who presented a threat to the nation's safety.

They hadn't gone in for the usual trappingsof herodom, however. No bright costumes or heroic speeches during combat. Instead, they were trained to attempt to blend into a crowd, strike with overwhelming force and surprise, and exfiltrate without being caught or seen.

The fact that Section Twelve had not been a major factor in the
Rikti's attack on Earth was a black check against them. Several
members of Section Twelve had died during the initial attack, and due to its inherent public nature, Section Twelve had been reduced to guerilla attacks and support, while Paragon City's varied metahumans had united to fight off the Rikti.

The General had sworn that he would take whatever necessary steps to prevent such an attack again, not for personal glory or for more funding... because he would be DAMNED if he let this nation fall to invaders from outer space. Some also said that the fight had become intensely personal to the General.

They said behind his back that he had lost a daughter in the Rikti attacks, but he never spoke about it. All that was known is that every sunday, he would visit the Wall of the Fallen Heroes, which was set up in Washington D.C., in honor of each and every metahuman who had given their life in combat with the Rikti, and he would run his finger against one particular name.

That name was "Lady Flagbearer". A fairly unknown hero, and from what little anyone could research (much of the information on the Rikti attacks were still highly classified), she was a fairly unknown hero who was caught by a Rikti beam while attempting to assist in a general evacuation during the initial attack.

The General's door politely chimed, and the General looked up from the paperwork he was filling out. "Come", he said, tersely.

The door opened, and a man in his late fourties entered, and saluted, as the General stood. As he returned the salute, the General's eyes simultaneously studied the newcomer as his mind ran over the details of the man's dossier.

Colonel Dan Mieskovich was built like the proverbial brickhouse. The man, even though pushing the wrong side of 40, still outworked kids half his age. He filled out his regulation uniform nicely, and not for the first time, the General nodded inwardly. This wasn't a guy to shirk his duty.

(and his familiarity with the subject of the investigation didn't hurt either), he thought dryly.

"Thank you, Colonel, at ease. I'm sorry for calling you away from your unit under such circumstances, but I can assure you that this will be only a temporary duty, and quite frankly, your the best man for the job."

The Colonel nodded shortly. His voice was carefully modulated, and respectful. "They weren't really forthcoming with details, General Austin, but they said that they needed me for something, so, I accepted." General Austin nodded, he was economic with his words and even asked for more information politely while maintaining military decorum. Not bad, a soldier who apparently could fight as well as think. Better and better, the General mused to himself.

"I think it goes without saying, that you remember the Browning
incident?" he asked neutrally, even as he watched Colonel Mieskovich's expression cloud up. "Specifically, the medic that was at the center of that incident?" If the Colonel's expression had been cloudy when he had mentioned the general incident, when the General mentioned the medic involved, his expression was downright stormy.

The General had studied what was referred to as "the Browning
incident" several times over. The 5th Column had infiltrated one of the Army Resource centers designed to test new weapons of war, be they normal or metahuman in nature, They had stole much important information from the Army's "Super-Medic" program (he suspected that Crey Industries got some of the tech behind THAT program, considering some of their recent advances).

They had also kidnapped one of the groups enlisted women, a registered nurse attached to the group, and had subjected her to the treatments in the "Super-Medic" program, with a cruel twist. They had also added psychotropic programming to the treatment program, in an attempt to twist the woman into using those gifts the program provided to serve the 5th Column in their attmepts to bring the United States under their facist rule.

Fortunately, the woman had been rescued by, of all things, one of the registered defender teams that raided the 5th column base she was being held at, and freeing her from the laboratory where she had been involuntarily undergoing "loyalty reprogramming".

The Colonel took a second to compose his thoughts, before he spoke. "Yes, Gail served in the unit I commanded, sir, I think that's fairly common knowledge. I didn't blame her when she took the medical discharge soon after she was freed, it was obvious to her, and to me, that no one really trusted her after she had been in the hands of those.." he paused for a minute to find a term that could properly label those people who had kidnapped her, without resorting to vulgarity. "those thugs, sir. And to be quite honest, the brain boys attempts to root out "any hidden controls or commands that the interrupted program may have left in her", left her quite shaken and hurt." The General did sympathize with the Colonel's position, but he had seen how deep such programming could go, but he didn't say anything to him.

"Well, it seems she's been busy as of late. She's turned up in Paragon City..." The General allowed an amused half-snort to escape, it seemed that more and more metahumans turned up each day in Paragon City, site of the first Rikti attack, the metahuman population had grown to the point that Paragon City was now popularly referred to as the "City of Heroes".

The General then continued. "It seems she's taken up with a team of female metahumans, and is fighting crime and the like. Quite successfully, I might add.. she seems to have mastered most of the techniques that the Super Medic program provided.."

The Colonel smiled inwardly.. He had known Gail Denson to be one of the most dedicated soldiers he had to pleasure to command, and it sounded like her confidence and self-esteem, which was completely shot after the Browning incident, had returned. But then he frowned, as he saw the downside. "But something's wrong.. isn't it sir?" he asked..

The General sighed and nodded, "I'm getting indications that the 5th column is... interested in recovering their wayward lamb, even though it won't be easy with her elevated level of power, that they consider her to be worthy of "serving the 5th column". I do not know how they plan to recover her, but I can't afford to sit back and wait to see how they plan to attack."

The General crossed his arms as he continues, "I would like to ask you to go somewhat "off the reservation", so to speak, and contact her in Paragon City, and request that she come in from the cold, for a bit. We just want to assure her safety, and you're the person she trusts the most, who can explain to her the danger that she's in."

The Colonel shook his head slightly. "If she's powerful, shouldn't
that argue that she is capable on her own? I mean, what am I going to say that that will convince her that I can protect her. After all, she has friends, and apparently has mastered her unwilling gifts.."

The General nodded. "That's the off-the-reservation part. We've
arranged for receive some items, combined with your excellent
athletic and physical skills that will allow you to function at the
level of the average metahuman in Paragon City. We believe this will show that we're dedicated for her safety."

The Colonel sighed, and thought to himself. Finally, there was a trace of reluctance in his voice, butit was overwhelmed by the sense of duty. "Ok, General, you got your man. But if she doesn't want to go, even after I try to convince her, then it's a no-go..."

The General nodded and smiled, a thin tight smile.. "I wouldn't have it any other way. Report to the medical center in sub basement four for outfitting..."

    (a couple hours later).

The man standing in front of the General was very different from the Colonel. Where the previous visitor reminded all of a Greek God, the one in front of him now resembled nothing more then a weasel given human form. Utterly ruthless, and utterly dedicated to the General, he had signed on with the General back when he was no more then an assassin, one with rules, but invariably twisted and knotted rules. He now led one of the General's strike force teams.

"So.. let me get this straight. We're allowed to recover the subject only if your man is unable to convince her to come in and let the mindscrubbers make sure that she doesn't have any lingering links, eh? What about use of force? What tactics are we allowed"

The General sighed. "Lethal force is NOT authorized, unless the 5th column succeeds in bringing her back. Other then that, you've got clean reign."

The weasel smiled. "Hmm.. anything, General? Innuendo, slander, and all the fun things I enjoy? I guess not killing her's ok.. I have some wonderful knockout drugs I'd like to try..."

The General nodded once, and the weasel left the General's office, already planning tactics and calling together the strike force. The General sat heavily down in his army-issue chair. He didn't like it, if "Green Gale" was clean of 5th column influence, he may have just ruined her life. The brainscrubbers never really had a stop button, if they couldn't find any hooks, they would just shrug, assume they were deeper, and continue searching, deeper and deeper. There was two cases where someone under the care of the brainscrubbers had gone catatonic.

One was still a vegetable in some forgotten psyche ward.

But he wouldn't.. no COULDN'T allow the 5th column access to the Super-Medic issues. The nation already had too many enemies. He wouldn't allow anyone, no matter how powerful to threaten the nation's safety.

In the next day.. two different planes left for Paragon City. One with a man planning the salvation of a woman he had lost before due to his mistakes.. and the other with a team bent on her capture, and possible destruction.

How about a definition for an "Add".

    [/ QUOTE ]

Add or adds or add(#) = when 1 or more mob(s) start attacking your group thus adding to the number of things that need to be killed, controlled, or taunted. Its a nice warning to alert everyone's attention to the new mobs rushing the team.

Yea I need to rework the later levels but right now its kicking *** and forgeting names. Both gloom and dark blast have a one second animation, so I can machine gun those when I have hasten up:P. It doesn't have the acc debuffed safety that Rad has, but can generate more dps.(at a higher end cost oddly, machine gunning is very taxing) It also is pretty solo effective, but again sadly none of the real good buffs work on yourself
  21. I have to agree with Cyclonis as well. Even though I have only played CoH for a few weeks, I already feel dreary from the grind. Mission XP is pitiful to the point that everyone I know in the 20's just want to go "hunting" unless of course the servers are full and its better to have your own personal spawn. And at high levels its even more dreadful, because you have to get more than twice as much xp just to get a new power.

I played Ultima Online for a long time, and ran a popular free server for 3 years. On my server, I always tried to keep things new, whether I'd add a surprise monster or just login and roleplay some sort of mence. I always tried to think of ways find something for players to do other than just developing skills.

One thing I never did was lessen a classes ability to do what it was designed to do. Rather, I had spawns that were more attractive to various classes, the spawn could have been immune to magic, weapons, or pets. With balance anytime you remove something from a class, it just makes the others look stronger until everyone has a diminished capacity to play as they like.

Overall as I have stated elsewhere, the problems with burning out, AT balance, and maintaining subscription levels all come down to one fundamental part of this game. The only reward for play is achieved through dealing damage to enemies. Every AT should gain XP for doing what they do.

At any rate, I apologize for my rant. I just see so many avenues to make this game better for everyone, and alot of the talk all over these boards has to do with messing with someone else play. Or in my opinion, demanding small changes that will do nothing to maintain playability or the player base's interest for the next year. This game has one of the most refreshing concepts I have seen in a long time, we just need to get the mechanics down, before its too late...
  22. Excellent post!

    One question @ ChaoticDNA:
Could you please post your build or is it posted somewhere?

    TIA!
