Food
& Recipes
I have been away from my desk for the past few weeks because I
needed to take a trip back home to Canada. My grandfather, who had been like a
father to me, passed away after 93 years. He lived a wonderful life. As I was
away, I spent time with my grandmother and more of my family. Now it's time to
get back into the groove of things. Even though I still have my moments, I have
more recipes to share and ideas I was thinking of on the ride back. I will post
them in time, so keep an eye on your server forums.
I hope everyone had a great holiday and a great New Years. I know
most of us are probably looking at the weight weve gained. Ive talked to many
folks who want to do away with the weight. This year we are going to get into
the groove of eating healthy! Yes I said it, HEALTHY!
(I will slip some goodies in there now and again cause they can't
hurt, right?)
Let's start with a few breakfast recipes this week and move our
way around the daily meals. If anyone has recipes they would like to share or
are curious about the nutrition information for the following recipes, please
PM me.
Ham & Cheddar Frittata
3 eggs
3 egg whites
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 1/2 cups (4oz) frozen broccoli florets, thawed
6oz of deli smoked ham, cut into 1/2 inch cubes (1 1/4 cups)
1/3 cup drained bottled roasted red bell peppers, cut into thin strips
1 tablespoon butter
1/2 cup (2oz) of shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1. Preheat Broiler
2. Beat eggs, egg whites, salt & pepper, into a large bowl until blended.
Stir in broccoli, ham and pepper strips.
3. Melt butter over medium heat in 10 inch ovenproof skillet with sloping side.
Pour egg mixture into skillet; cover. Cook 5-6 minutess or until eggs are set
around the edge. (The center can still be wet.)
4. Uncover; sprinkle cheese over frittata. Transfer skillet to broiler; broil 5
inches from heat source, 2 minutes or until eggs are set in the center and
cheese is melted. Let stand 5 minutes and then cut into wedges.
Serves four.
Baked Eggs Florentine
2 packages (10 oz each) frozen creamed spinach
4 slices (1/8 inches thick) deli ham (about 5-6oz)
4 eggs
Salt & pepper to taste
1/8 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
1/2 cup (2oz) shredded provolone cheese
2 tablespoons chopped roasted red pepper
1. Preheat oven to 450°F. Make small cut in each package of spinach. Microwave
on HIGH for 5-6 minutes, turning packages halfway though cooking time.
2. Meanwhile, grease 8-inch square baking pan. Place ham slices on bottom of
prepared pan, overlapping slightly. Spread spinach mixture over ham slices.
3. Make 4 indentations in spinach. Carefully break 1 egg into each. Season to
taste with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with nutmeg.
4. Bake 16-19 minutes or until eggs are set. Remove from oven. Sprinkle cheese
and red pepper over top. Return to oven and bake 1-2 minutes longer or until
cheese is melted. Serve immediately.
Serving Suggestion: Serve with fresh pineapple pieces.
Serves four.
Three Egg Omelet
1 tablespoon butter or margarine
3 eggs, lightly beaten
salt and pepper to taste
1/4 cup (1oz) shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup chopped cooked ham
1. Melt butter in 10 inch skillet over medium heat. Add eggs; lift cooked edge
with spatula to allow uncooked eggs to flow under cooked portion. Season with
salt and pepper to taste. Shake pan to loosen omelet. Cook until set.
2. Place cheese and ham on 1/2 of omelet. Fold omelet in half. Transfer to
serving plate. Serve Immediately.
Serves one.
Thats all I have for this week folks! See you next week for lunch.

Behind the Mask

Teldon
MonkeyHead
Guardian Server
Where on this dirtball do you live?
North Texas, currently. A small town called Vernon.
What do you do for a living?
Well, I'm a freelance writer, and I also own the local movie
theater, which my wife and I live above in a converted loft. It's pretty
nouveau-bohemian.
So what was the weirdest movie or event you had there?
Vernon's a small Texas town, so we can't get TOO weird. Not yet,
anyway. But we've had several midnight movies for things like Harry Potter 5
and Rob Zombie's Halloween. They weren't weird, per se, but they DID bring out
the, shall we say, more colorful... people in this town.
How long have you and your wife been married?
Four years now. She's a veeeery patient woman.
Does she play City of with you?
No, but she LETS me play every day, which is nice for stress
relief, escaping, etc. She'll watch geek-stuff with me, but draws the line at
CoX. Her style of video game is something like Myst. One of her favorite things
to ask me is, "Honey? Are you thwarting evil in there?" On occasion, I have to
tell her, "No, I'm committing mayhem!"
Do you two have any children either two or four-legged?
Nope. Got a 20 year old niece that visits from time to time, and she brings her
little dog with her. We want a dog of our own, as soon as we can find something
that isn't a mix of rottweiler and pit bull. Texas. What can you do?
What would be your top five songs of all time?
That's a mean thing to ask me on Elvis' Birthday!
How Many More Times, Led Zeppelin, I've Got You Under My Skin, Frank
Sinatra, I've Got a Right to Sing the Blues, Jack Teagarden, Girl U Want,
Devo, and the Theme from Jonny Quest, Hoyt Curtin. And I'll give a million
influence to anyone who can make sense of that list!
What are your five favorite movies?
A little bit easier for me, this is a movie that, when I'm
flipping channels and see it, I'll stop and watch it, even though it's cut up,
commercialed, and sitting on my dvd shelf: Raiders of the Lost Ark,
Ghostbusters, The Blues Brothers, The Great Escape, and King Kong (1933)
What TV shows could you not live without?
Very little, I'm afraid. I really only like the shows that
continue to surprise me. Stuff like Heroes and Lost (cox faves, I know). The
Shield is one I came late to and flat-out love. I trend more toward the FX and
HBO shows rather than network stuff, generally. That said, I get more TV from
DVDs than live and in person. My wife and I got hooked on Battlestar Galactica
that way.
What books and authors would you say are your favorite?
Well, I'm a Robert E. Howard scholar, so that one is a real given!
I like Donald Westlake, Michael Chabon, John Steinbeck, and Dorothy Parker. I
tend to prefer muscular prose, but I've been known to read and enjoy urban
fantasy. Really, I read a little bit of everything. Right now, I'm reading a
biography of P.G. Wodehouse. But it was Robert E. Howard that made me want to
become a writer.
How did you end up picking your home server?
When I first signed up, I had a buddy who had higher level toons
on here (and I got lured with the promise of influence). I wish it was more
meaningful than that, but it's not. I DO consider Guardian my "home" on CoX,
though. Great group of folks there.
Do you prefer heroside or villianside and why?
I prefer Heroside, since I'm a lifelong comic book reader. I mean,
come on, I'm standing here looking like a bad Steve Ditko character! But as
much as I enjoy Heroside, the Villainside is way more immersive, more textured,
and as you get into the 30s...it is more true to itself.
Which archetype is your favorite to play?
I love scrappers. The Batmans, Daredevils, and Captain Americas of
the super hero world, here. That's my style. Tankers are a close second.
Which leads into my next question, what would you say your play
style is?
I like to play "in character." If my scrapper is nutty, then I'll
run in and leap aroundlike a clown. But if my character is more reserved, I'll
pull, or taunt, or some other tactic to draw mobs out. I use a lot of binds to
help with both tactics and personality. That way, the characters all play
really differently. I even made a chart to help me keep all of my keybinds
straight.
Which zone is your favorite in the game?
At low levels, I am all about King's Row. It's a scrappers
paradise, and it's very Marvel-esque if you are playing a streetfighting man.
But hands down, the new Faultline is hopefully the shape of things to come.
Great storyline, great mix of terrain, a strong concept, and an interesting way
to move the CoX story forward.
What is your favorite storyline in the game?
The New Faultline storyline. Nice pathos, and you really get a
sense of better immersion into the game. I want to see CoH move more in that
direction. Well out of all the issues released last year, what new feature
would you say is the best? I think the Invention system has been the most fun
to play with, but seriously, weapon customization was better than I could have
hoped for. I rolled a Willpower/Mace Tank for no other reason than I could have
a shillelagh instead of that goofus-looking mace. THAT is good stuff, there.
New swords, new bows, and even new claws. More concepts, more alts, more time
sunk into this game!
What feature would you like to see added to the game?
Like everyone else, I'm excited about the prospect of shields, and
an epic villain archetype. But what I want to see, frankly, is more heroic
accoutrements and less fantasy and furry gear. I know the name City of Heroes
sounds generic, but this is a super hero game. As in, comic book heroes. I
would like to see more high-tech and modern gear, more costume choices for
supers, and a decrease in the anime/cute and cuddly stuff. As it stands, we DO
seem to get those things pretty regularly, so I'm pretty content as a player.
Any advice for new players?
Yes read the forums, and then go do what you want, anyway. Use the
info to make a decision, and then find your own playing style. Don't chase the
numbers. Try to fit into the spirit of the world.
Finally, any closing comments?
I love what you guys are doing with the City Scoop. Please keep up
the good work! I think it adds a lot to the community, and I feel that our
community is a big part of what sets this game apart from all of the others.

The Protectors of Neverland
Server and Side:Champion Server, hero side
Established: Around Sept 27, 2005
Number of Members:Between all the divisions, we have over 450
members
Value of Base:120 million
Who is your base designer and who are your supergroup leaders?
XxBudweiser8xX designs the base with valuable input from every
member of our SG. We wanted a simplistic layout with full functionality in Base
Raids and a great look.
We are made up of a "High Council," based on the same idea of the
famous "Round Table" of legends. We are all equals and each have an equal say
in all operations. We include any and all SG members in all decisions made. Our
leaders are:
XxBudweiser8xX, Azure Reign, Twisted Guy, Devils Spawn, Athena Shadow, Stg.
Klaw, Hindenburg, Wutink, Soldier Prime, Viking Queen, Forces Align
We have many more in our five other Division SGs:
Protectors of Neverland Reserves, Protectors of Neverland Academy, Protectors
of Neverland Genesis, Protectors of Neverland Raiders, Protectors of Neverland
Elites
How much time do you spend working on your base? How much time have
you invested so far?
Our base has been in its current configuration for about sixty
days now, but I still spend a few hours a week tinkering here and there. All
together, time spent designing, re-designing, rebuilding from the ground up is
approximately 350-400 hours
What is your favorite base item? Least favorite?
My favorite is the Fusion Generator, and my least favorite are the
empowerment stations.
What is your favorite thing about base editing? Least favorite?
My favorite thing about the base editing is the ability to create
a personal place for us in this Superworld. My least favorite thing is how the
room editor will not let you edit unless a room is connected to another room.
This complicates base upgrades greatly. If you have certain set rooms that you
will not be upgrading but need to move, it makes it extremely difficult to
properly do this.
What is the highest thing on your wish-list for new base items?
Windows, different locations like space, underwater, artic, and
desert, the Cathedral of Pain trial, landscapes like water, dirt, grass, snow,
and rock, the ability to create statues of our characters to place in base
(this is an SG favorite), the Cathedral of Pain trial, better control over
salvage bins and enhancement tables, so we can prevent the rare salvage and
enhancements from being wiped out. the Cathedral of Pain trial, personalized
banners like "Welcome the the P.o.N Base", multi-leveled/2nd floor, a "kiosk"
that we could "call" Wentworths or the Tailor, the Cathedral of Pain trial,
arena kiosk to place in base, personalized pictures/the ability to put up our
own screenshots, the Cathedral of Pain trial
If you could give just one piece of advice to a new base editor,
what would it be?
Be patient. Maximize your usable space. Why pay for square footage
thats not being used?
Anything else you'd like to add about your SG, your base or the
base system in general?
What can I say about our SG? I love these folks. They are the most
fun group of folks I have ever had the pleasure of gaming with. I have met some
of them at our P.o.N Meet and Greet in Las Vegas, and it was a blast! Im
looking forward to the next one coming in March! P.o.N4 LIFE!!

Base Showcase
By
born2luz
Empire of Dawn
Server: Virtue
Founded: November 29th, 2007
Number of Members: 100+ (and growing!)
Approx Base Value: 7 million prestige
Who is your base designer and who are your supergroup leaders?
Zynite Yunox, Founder, Leader, and Base Designer
How much time do you spend working on your base? How much time have
you invested so far?
I work on it daily, constantly trying to improve it with
necessities, and sometimes just decoration!
What is your favorite base item? Least favorite?
Our meeting room because it has such a special 'feel' to it, but
that may be because I have a throne in it, and I sit in front of the room,
facing the crowd that acknowledges my presence!
I don't have a least favorite. I've worked on the base for a long
time, and I am always trying to keep it to my members likes.
What is your favorite thing about base editing? Least favorite?
The customization! I LOVE that you can design your base ANY WAY YOU WANT. It
could be arcane or tech...It could be a sewer hideout or a Chinese training
facility. You can choose how you want it to look without any limit (except your
prestige limit, of course!).
My least favorite thing about base editing are the prices of
plots/base areas. I mean, honestly, who is going to accumulate over 100 million
prestige? There are less than 50 SG/VGs that have even over 50 million
prestige. The prices just seem a little absurd.
What is the highest thing on your wish-list for new base items?
Nothing at this point, really. Anything that got itself on my wishlist at this
point would be useless other than for looks.
If you could give just one piece of advice to a new base editor,
what would it be?
Conserve you prestige. Start your base small, and build up from
there. If you try to build a giganticnormous (yes, I just said that!) base,
there is no way you are going possibly get a good base for the time being. So,
just be wise with your decisions!
Anything else you'd like to add about your SG, your base or the
base system in general?
I'd REALLY like for the SG/VG mission to start back up again. The
Cathedral of Pain, especially. There have been many forum topics regarding this
issue, and I truly agree...They should get them back up and running!

Point / Counterpoint
By
Bowfling
This is the eleventh in a series of point-counterpoint articles,
which will review commonly requested player suggestions, and review the pros
and cons of those suggestions.
This week's subject... Travel Power Movement Suppression
POINT:
One of the earliest forms of easy risk free combat was the ability
to fly or hover outside of the attack range of a critter. Fly had an accuracy
penalty in it, which was designed to counteract this somewhat. Later, an
accuracy penalty was added to Superjump and Superspeed, and was generally
disliked by players. So a new penalty was designed that served to minimize the
ability to engage in risk free combat, Movement Suppression.
Ever since movement suppression was added, it has been a topic of
discussion. In general, by reducing a characters movement speed to unbuffed
amounts (as if the toggle was turned off.) the ability to move into and out of
combat situations was significantly reduced. Numerous tactics evolved around
using travel powers in combat, perhaps the most commonly known one being
Jousting. The switch to movement suppression occurred at the same time as PvP
was added to the game, creating the suspicion that the change was made because
of PvP tactics.
In the end movement suppression and the conjoiner in stealth
suppression offer the developers a method by which they can prevent the usage
of certain powers in ways the devs may not have intended, while still allowing
them to be used for their intended purpose. It also avoids some other penalty
being used to replace suppression, one which might otherwise be more disliked
such as the accuracy penalty. In addition, suppression may act as a balancing
effect on players who would otherwise outperform the devs' expectations.
COUNTERPOINT:
But there are also some negatives associated with movement
suppression. For some players rapid strikes are part of the vision they have
for their characters. Unlike an accuracy penalty, which can be compensated for;
the only work arounds for movement suppression involve using powers not
available to all characters. Because of this, some people feel the immersion of
the game is disrupted when suppression activates. In addition certain PvP
aspects are impacted, since most critters do not have travel powers but most
players do. Furthermore, some of the reasoning for adding suppression may have
changed since suppression was added, as many fundamental changes (ED, GDC, and
inventions) might reduce the need for suppression or even render it obsolete.
It is also possible that having had suppression for so long, players who
originally did not prefer and accuracy penalty may now favor one, or some other
penalty. Perhaps the devs will take another look at means to prevent
undesirable battle tactics, while still allowing players a certain freedom to
play more to their own vision of how they want a particular character to
behave.
A recent thread on the subject can be found
here.

The City Scoop
Saturday Night
Fights
Epic Villain Pentad Tournament
Greetings everyone. This is the Merry Prankster here to remind you
about the event of the century! As you know, Saturday Night Fights (SNF) and
the PvPEC have joined forces! If you are not familiar with these fine folks,
the PvPEC is a group of dedicated City of Heroes/City of Villains players
formed for the purpose of promoting increased PvP interest and participation
across the whole game. The aim of this group is to provide high quality,
player-driven PvP content to a greater audience as well as retaining its
current constituency.
"Over the last summer, SNF held a series of tournaments
collectively know as "Beat the Heat by Beating Each Other," which consisted of
a series of Single, Duo, Hero, Villain, and Mixed team events. Well, it was
during our Villain Pentad that we noticed a glaring lack of high level Villains
to compete with. It was decided then, that shortly after the release of I11, we
would try to promote the Redside with an event. We wanted to bring together all
of the best aspects of CoX into one glorious event, so it will combine teaming
in PvE and PvP.
This event will be a mix of PvP and PvE. We wanted to bring together all of the
best aspects of CoX into one glorious event! But before I go into any details,
let me tell you a bit about how this all came to be. Always good to begin at
the beginning, no?
The details
On January 12, 2008, KPOW Justice Radio and Saturday Night Fights
began hosting a three month long PvE/PvP extravaganza starring Justice Radio
DJ-sponsored Villain pentad teams, which will all begin life together at level
three. Each team will be tasked with living, leveling and fighting together as
much as possible while being counseled and cajoled by their sponsors and
berated and belittled by opposing sponsor DJs on the air. All done, of course,
in the spirit of good fun.
After the teams were chosen by the DJs in a schoolyard style
draft, teaming began. Each individual team has decided on their play schedules.
There will be scheduled grudge matches to size up the opposing teams, which
will be limited by level until the Final Showdown. The level capping has been
done to try and keep a fairly level playing field. Not everyone will be able to

Then I guess the people I know who run the Eden Trial for the Trial pool drops are liars? You're the first person I've seen say that it gives TF drops.
[/ QUOTE ]
Or they just don't know what they're talking about. Eden does indeed drop TF pool recipes. -

This I would agree to if red ran as well on older systems as blue does. Really I think that is what they need to fix with red. I would play it a ton more if it ran better on my system. I am also with Sam, give where it is needed, as long as it dosen't neglect the other completely.

This, I think, is a fair argument. There are definitely some spots that CoV could be adjusted for performance, particularly Grandville. As Grandville literally has two layers of polygons (all those shiney Arachnos dohickeys sitting on the buildings are literally sitting on buildings that are otherwise hidden from view and, thus, graphical dead weights), I'm hoping thats one of the first things that gets looked at once the additional art staff get up to speed.
Not that GV hurts me personallyI'm just feeling for my fellow gamers whose rigs aren't as capable.

In a recent discussion about the popularity (or lack thereof) of Hamidon raiding, BAB posted something to the effect that using rewards to get people to play through something they don't really enjoy playing through is not good game design.
By that same logic, making someone play as a villain to experience something fun is not good game design, especially when using it specifically as a carrot to get people to play villain side is your only justification. If someone doesn't want to play a villain just to experience X, why force them when you can allow their hero to experience Y, which is the equivalent of X?
Now, I think that some fun things should remain seperate, as long as they're specific to the side of the game they're on. You think it's fun to beat up Statesman in the game? Going to have to play a villain to do that. Want to smash up Paragon City instead of protect it? Again, have to be a villain.
[/ QUOTE ]
The devs can't "force" you to play one side or the other just because there's a smidgen of content there that you think you'll enjoy. Only you can do that to yourself. And frankly, the less uniqueness to each side, the worse both sides become IMO. If the only difference between the two sides becomes textures and mission text, what is the point of having two different sides, really?
And no, I don't consider being able to fight Statesman in and of itself to be "unique content"It plays more or less the same way any other AV/Hero encounter does (though Statesman *is* a cheap *******, what with that lightning bolt...)

I really fail to see why playing "keep away the good stuff from the other side" is a good idea.
[/ QUOTE ]
The assumption is that, if you take all of the things CoV has that are considered better and grant them to CoH as well, then the population will shift even more dramatically in CoH's favor and leave primary villain players even harder up (both for seeking groups, and in the "bigger side gets more dev attention" argument). And, while it is only an assumption, I can't say with confidence that it is without merit.
This becomes especially true if nothing flows CoH -> CoV in return. Of course, two much flowing in both directions just homogenizes both sides, and personally I don't think thats a particularly good thing either. -

MMORPG.com Has an Interview with Chris Chung as well!
I figured this was as on topic as anything...
So here is some more insight from the new President of NCsoft Chris Chung.

And the only thing "unique" ATs accomplish for me is to deny me access to some of the things I'd like to try out.
[/ QUOTE ]
Point of order: ATs that are unique to a given side don't deny you access to anything. You may choose to deny yourself access, though (and yes, I know you don't care for a lot of the redside ambiance and content). Functionally the result is the same for you, but there is a distinction nonetheless.
I thought this thread had already covered that point though -

From the article:

1UP: We've heard that NCSoft's newest studio in California is dedicated both to maintaining the City of Heroes franchise and to working on PS3 development. So would it be a great leap to expect City of Heroes-related content on the PS3?
Chung: [laughs] I can't tell you specifically, but yes, we are reviewing all our titles. In my opinion, there are a number of titles in our portfolio that are really suitable for consoles, and City of Heroes is one of them. But we're looking at all of our products.
[/ QUOTE ]
So. My question at this juncture is this: All those new hires? How many of them are working on THIS game, right here? Half, all, none? And how many of the pre-NC^2 team are still workign on THIS game?
NOTE .... by "this game", I mean the current PC-based City of Heroes ... not a console 'port, not Co*2, not anything else except the game I could play if I fired up my CoH client on a PC.
[/ QUOTE ]
Everyone in the NCNC offices are currently working on City of Heroes, there have been no announcements regarding console development. This includes our latest new hire in the art department.
