Walking up to some guy and punching them in the face for no reason.

Also, wow, a lot of people around here don't understand similes at all.
  2. I've just thought of a better simile than the one I used before.

It's like getting a cold-call. It's not a massive inconvenience, and it doesn't take long to deal with, but if you get two, three cold calls in one day, you can start to get pretty vexed about the whole thing. I see them much like blind invites. I don't know the person on the other end of the tell or invite, and I'm generally only interested in teaming with people I like and have fun with.

I'm here to have fun, after all.

I don't particularly like random groups, so I tend to avoid them. I've had good experiences with them in the past, but it's just a dynamic I don't particularly enjoy. So having these "cold-call" interruptions detracts from my enjoyment. Not a lot, but it can mount up if I'm unlucky.

tl;dr version - yes, more flagging and variables would be good because I'm a cantankerous old killjoy.
  3. Because the last thing anyone wants is a gooseberry.

Surely you've had a situation like this in real life - you and... lets say some work friends are discussing going out to have a couple of drinks after shift is over, and some guy you don't really know passing by goes "Oh, hey, that sounds like a good idea, I'll come with!"

It's not the be-all and end-all of social faux pas, but it really isn't very polite at all to impose on people in that fashion.

No, I was just showing my disagreement with Mattwo7 that disagreeing with the government over policy immediately meant a lack of patriotism.

Also, Ascendant totally validated me. Does that mean I win prizes?

In my opinion, patriotism has always been about loyalty to the country, not the government.

Bit of advice no. 24601; Forum games are not to be taken seriously.
Yeah, but this isn't a "name that quote" forum game and you didn't indicate that this was what you were doing. Without that acknowledgement it makes you look either pretentious or, at worst, maliciously plagaristic.

And then we can't have nice things like this thread without two pedantic people arguing back and forth between other posts. D:
  7. Yes please let us reduce all game mechanics and rigidly push them into all aspects of RP.

Sometimes, folks, you just need to turn a bit of a blind eye, or deaf ear, or laminated tongue.

  11. Having checked over your characters in your sig, OP, I have absolutely no idea who you were in the Dauntless Reverie.
That may well be a failing on my part.
But if you don't like referring to forums, then the DR definitely wasn't for you. We run plots that go over a period of weeks, and even months in some cases, and that kind of thing CAN'T be expressed by in-game word-of-mouth, no matter how much our members try to. And we do! Whenever someone says "what's going on?" we try to give a synopsis in IC format, but it's HARD. Much easier to read a thread on a board.

There are systems in place to help people get involved. And we appreciate that real life concerns come first, but...

The realistic thing is, if people aren't going to be around more often than a second-stringer, that's how they'll be treated. Included in the story, but not one to be relied on because people'll never know when the character'll be around. Can't hang a major plot-point on someone who may not be there.
  12. Never expect anyone to take anything seriously, ever.

You're right. Wasting air is bad. *Pointed eyebrow-raise*

In reference to the original post question and all... I'd be massively uncomfortable playing anything in a group based off the IRA. Just like I would playing an organization based off any terrorist organization.
  14. Or possibly, if you need that much help to stay interested in the game, it's time to move on. I mean, since beta is a loooooong time, dude. Maybe you're burned out on CoAitchVee.
  15. Oh, thanks! I'm sure I'll be able to get a quid or two for them on the open market.

Not exactly sure what you guys are going for here, but it ain't irony. And you can't even really have unintentional irony referring to a person's stated opinion and the incongruity of their actions, only between the contrast of an expectation and the actual result. It could be hypocrisy you're aiming for, but seeing as I know neither you two or the people you were commenting on, I couldn't say for sure.

  17. I believe this all falls into the category of "muscle memory." Even if someone knows that they don't have to use double-parenthesis on teams, but are used to doing so, they may have to exert conscious effort not to encapsulate their OOC comments with the brackets because they're so used to it.

The same with the asterisks - not everyone comes from a CoH background. For example, text-based chat programmes sometimes have no /e function. They may be very used to different forms of expression.

Take, for example, the "tells" people display in poker, or nervous habits like tugging at earlobes and so forth. Muscle memory actions are unconscious, ingrained.

And really, typing shift-9-9 is much more simple than learning where the bite of the clutch on your car is.
Or an even better example... if you have good grammar, try not to capitalise every new sentence as you write a 2000 word essay. Some things just become ingrained by habit.
  18. Oooh, sexy hearsay.

Well, I guess we'll never know what really happened in the end. So many conflicting stories, so much general apathy from the forums...

Why IS this in the forums, by the way? Seems like a private disagreement to me.
  19. Elysienne

    Drugs in CoH

Not necessarily. It could be seen as a direct allegory for heroin addicts searching for new injection sites.

Or perhaps I'm being a little dark there.
  20. My thoughts can be summed up thusly;

    ELECTRICITY CONTROL! *Explodes in glee*
