Carry the strength and lessons with you, my friends.
And thank you for sharing! -
Quote:Well said.
I may have to change my tune on the question... Are MMOs dead? They might actually be. Not for the reasons talked about regarding the actual games... but, for me, the great aspect of MMOs are the ongoing, indefinite nature of them. When you find that MMO that you love, it's similar to one of your favorite games of all time that you could always bust out, play for a bit and have a blast (those often come in the form of an old console system or an old pc game... it could be Super Mario Bros on the NES or Golden Axe on the Sega Genesis [Or Adventure on the Atari 2600] or the first Tomb Raider or any number of any games on any systems that you'll occasionally find yourself dusting off and reminiscing with).
It's somewhat akin to your favorite toy. You can take it out and play with it every damn day and you see no end in sight.
All of these things are usually ours to keep and use whenever we may happen to feel like it... Even if it is ten years after the fact. It might be in a box somewhere... it might be on a special shelf you set up for it... Regardless, it's there, in your possession to use at your will.
It used to seem as though MMORPGs would remain in existence even after they'd been around for several years. UO, EQ... they may be well past their days of being relevant within the industry and business world... but they were still kicking when most of the newer waves of MMORPG players (that now make up the majority of MMORPG players today) came along and got into the next generation of MMORPG games - SWG, CoH, WoW...
Many of us thought that SOE's mistakes of destroying what they had in order to make it something completely different would bring about a better approach to faltering games... Instead, it gave way to just ending these games. They're considered too expensive to even keep running.
We've seen a bunch just switched off, never to be turned on again.
Now that we see it more and more... and now that fans, customers and players experience their favorite, continuous video game experience being cut short on them... Perhaps we're going to see people just simply not wish to get hooked, involved and committed to these massive games being run and maintained by fickle corporations.
I know nothing lasts forever and we're to enjoy the time we do spend with what we have while we have it... and all of that is fine... but, after a while, after a few experiences... It's not unreasonable to avoid reliving the same painful endings before you're ready for them. It's not unreasonable to avoid allowing your happy fun pastime video gaming to be completely at the mercy of some men in suits that run the publishing company.
I don't create characters that I've enjoyed playing for 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, 5 years... and so on... just to suddenly not be able to play those characters and continue those characters any longer. Even if it's not the specific characters for a particular player... it might be the game mechanics instead, or the game world, or the various options the game has to offer.
Whatever the case may be... that ongoing nature of the MMORPG has always been the aspect that sets it apart from all other games. You can replay most games... but an MMORPG just keeps going.
Or does it?
It doesn't seem to keep going at all.
It ends.
Not with some fancy cut scene and/or end credits.
It ends with an announcement. It ends with gnashing of teeth and reluctant goodbyes and frantic begging for reprieve.
And then, worst of all... you can't even replay it. It' gone. Screenshot memoirs and memories are all you have left of the game itself. You can't pull it out of the box, pick it off of the shelf, turn it on for old time's sake.
It's not ours. And the people who do own it can take it away, at any point in time.
It makes me wonder if that is why MMORPGs may indeed die.
I lost my two favorite games this way... I don't think I will risk another.
great times in both games, no doubt... but I'm done having my alltime favorite pastimes ripped out of my hands before I'm done with them. Maybe I am not alone in this. -
Shortly after you arrived, I believe I sent you a PM expressing how impressed I was with the way you were tackling this job...
That never stopped and only continued to be more impressive.
Great, great job, Zwill and thanks for also being a fun, cool, nice and sincere guy (either that or you fooled me good!).
It's great that you're all taking this in stride, but I think it really sucks arachnos ***.
This game and Paragon Studios, in my opinion, are the best in the business. And to have it pulled out from you and us like this is just an injustice that all of us super-powers should be able to prevent...
Still... I hope to cross paths again.
- Paul "The Electric-Knight" Thomas
P.S. (kinda jokingly) Now do you see why I hated awesome costume bits being held behind the Tier 9 system that I was JUST ABOUT to finally reach?? -
LOL
Also, I'll do the obligatory... Wow, so Golden Girl is a Dev!?!?!
Well, anyway, good to laugh and reflect on the good things... but this really does suck.
Just seeing the members of Paragon Studios from the outside, and getting a chance to interact with them here and in person at a few meets, made me feel like I knew how awesome they are and how seriously enthused and passionate they are about this product. I can only imagine how much that comes off when you are actually inside and behind the curtains with them. I hope you can continue in the business, Bass.
I'm upset about what's happening to our wonderful community, but I am saddened about what has happened to the best team I have seen in this industry. Paragon Studios deserves far better than this. They have been the champs, delivering the best service, product and customer satisfaction... Oh, and the number one super hero mmo, of course.
At the very least, we can all walk away knowing this. -

Love ya, Pal!

My presence has dwindled over the years and our numbers may have shrunk considerably, but you were the best SG I could have ever asked for.
We formed up right when I had just gotten into playing regularly and was looking to branch out.
The concept was great, to house role-players interested in playing heroes of all sorts within themed groups, but within one single SG that would provide a large SG to be a part of.
It worked greatly for a long time.
Beyond the concept were the great people and great role-players... More than I'll name, I am sure, but...
In the beginning, Dark Quill, Paladin, Chrysame, Carlin, Twilight Commander, Graviton, Gold Cop, Dr Stan... Soon afterward, Arch Mage, Primal Thing, Dechs Kaison... many others...
Your awesome role-playing, friendly comradery, senses of humor and friendships turned my CoH playing into something entirely more.
I wish we had more time back then and more time now and in the future to have more of that big time fun that I've only been able to find with you people.
This isn't the end... But things are apparently changing in ways I certainly was not yet expecting!
Maybe this will inspire us to have some greater fun together again.
I love you all. -
Quote:Ooh, I didn't remember (or know) about that! Even easier. You don't even need to go that far. Log into your account via the game, get the shop window to come up. There is a redeem code field in the upper right. Use that. I've seen it reported in game that this works as a means for applying the codes.
Quote:That worked.Odd thing? It took the random second password it emailed me, but I still can't use that temp password to get into my account via Firefox or Chrome. Something is really borked there.
-
Quote:That stinks. What a horrible time for me not to be able to get into my NCSoft master account. I tried every password I could possibly use. Nada. Reset my password, use temporary password it emails me. Nada. Try it again. Nada. Try a different browser. Nada. Send in a support ticket. 3 hours later, still no response. So, I'm going to miss out on a Dark Matter code because NCSoft's account management is currently borked for me. Just freaking awesome...
P.S. You couldn't possibly PM me a code that I could use once their account management is working again, could you? >_>
If you can log into the game, try accessing your account through there (I think through the Market window, you can click on My Account or something and that should get you in). Hopefully that'll work and you can enter the code. -

I doubt they're all used up yet.
Hats off to Hit Streak, Zwill and the gang.
I know we don't all agree with keeping things exclusive, but you guys have done great in trying to get as many of these out as you can with the tools (and sometimes beyond) that you have.
You guys do rock.
I hope there are many happy pickings for people looking for these! -
Impressive...
Most impressive.

Without reading much of this thread and the many responses... Just simply riffing off of the title and some of what I remember being discussed here a while ago...
I sometimes feel like the real VIP isn't until you're Tier 9.
So, I can understand being a subscriber (before reaching Tier 9) and not feeling all that much like a "Very Important Person" in the company's eyes, compared to others that are Tier 9.
I'm not crying foul over that or anything. I'm just simply pointing out my own take on the VIPness of the Freedom's subscriber system.
Do your time as a subscriber and eventually you're a real VIP. Until then, you're caught a little beneath the gold and platinum subscribers.
Still... I have found the Paragon Points stipend to cover everything I've wanted, so I do not feel as though I have to pay my subscription and buy other stuff and so on (which I did before Freedom for Booster Packs and some of the other content available through the different boxes).
I have points saved up still, and I've gotten a lot of things that I've enjoyed from the market... all from just being a subscriber.
My only complaint would be that I'd have preferred if previous sub time and money spent on the game counted a little further into the tier system.
A new subscriber under the Freedom system would have been a Tier 9 a lot quicker than I am getting there and for a lot less money than I've spent.
As I said, I am not crying foul over it and I'm okay with it, but if I could change anything (to satisfy my own position) it'd be that. -
Sorry to say that, despite much fuss from some of us on the forums about it, the only official responses have been that it will remain an exclusive giveaway for the time being...
I managed to get it from their Twitter giveaways, but I wish they'd simply make it available for all to purchase or acquire or whathaveyou.
Best of luck! -

Random gang member in the Hollows (probably an Outcast or Skull): "No, I didn't call you stupid. I said your comment was an oxymoron. It's a rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are put together. Am I the only one who reads the books we swipe around here?"I was going to post that one! The one I copied came from a Blood Brother Brawler.
Here's an NPC exchange from inside a rescue mission:
[NPC] Dr. Frank N. Scott: I won't tell you a thing.
[NPC] Guide: We already know that the ritual begins with a jump to the left.
[NPC] Galan: Yes, and then a step to the right.
[NPC] Guide: Dr. Scott! Electric-Knight!
[NPC] Dr. Frank N. Scott: Electric-Knight!
[NPC] Galan: Electric-Knight! Dr. Scott!
[NPC] Dr. Frank N. Scott: If they'd pried that ritual from me, it could have opened a time warp, or worse! -
LMAO... Good thing I put the safety on first...

Quote:And, in other news, rain is wet! You've made it clear why you're here. You've openly said you don't care about the story, that you don't notice it; you've said it bothers you when people talk about it in any sort of way that doesn't fit your tastes. From your hollow posts and insults it's pretty obvious that you're just here to pick internet fights.

Just for the record, *I* don't find it bad form to reply to this post.
I know it is against the rules and they moderate this strictly, but I like having old threads that continue on... More importantly though, I think it displays the continued wish for the topics of those threads and can give us a bit of perspective on such things (what has or hasn't been done and what the general consensus was and where it is now).
Within the rules though, start a new thread and link back to the old. That's fine and I'm not rebelling, but I just don't understand the angst people have for reasonable "necroposts". Instead of either ignoring it or contributing further to the discussion, you get a bunch of people complaining about the amount of time since the previous post!
We want more rocket board options!
Make a pack and/or sell them separately: multiple rocket board powers, each with different skins/paint jobs.
Oh, sorry... BRAAAAAAIIIINNNSSS.... -
Or, maybe he remembers correctly and is speaking spot on about it, because I think we can all agree that that was no Deadpool!!
Also...
Quote:Lastly, he added that he wasnt happy with how Dr. Doom was portrayed either in the Fantastic Four movies. -
Anyway, I would love to see them just add the Skulls symbol onto their jacket backs.
As far as I know, this would need to be done as a new texture for the whole jacket (actually, each and every jacket/vest they now use) that includes the symbol, as they don't have the tech to add a decal onto jacket backs (like a chest detail symbol)... still, I don't think that's out of the question, as far as time and difficulty... unless their budget/schedule just do not allow for it. However, in my opinion, if they scheduled the time to revamp the Skulls, they should have scheduled the time to do it right and include such an iconic aspect of the gang. Yes, the skull masks are more iconic and I like what they did with those! The symbol on the back covers their iconic image from behind (when you can't see their masks).
To me, not having those symbols makes this revamp feel like a cheap player-recreation job. Some new textures put it beyond what any of us could have done with the character creator tools at hand (minus the new mask).
Also, after running around and checking them out, I'd say that the occurrence of females showing up in spawns seems a little too frequent. I encountered several female only spawns and usually at least one female in every spawn on the streets. I like the addition, but it just feels out of place to have them so equally represented.
Just my opinions.
I am not against this revamp at all. And I don't think they've swung and missed in the slightest. I don't care for the club hair and I don't care for the club jeans, but the previous changes seem more important to me. -
The thing is, that's the kind of discussion we've been having.
Oh, I agree and can't stand how most people start threads about topics I agree with, but their wording and such do harm to that cause (for lack of a better word).
However, I'll also point to this unfortunate truth... reasonable posts that state things rather objectively tend to get ignored.
It's a sad reality, but anyone who watches things can recognize this.
Now, that does not make me endorse intentionally going overboard. I just find that the only place I ever find people bothering to have discussions about such things is within threads that started with some ranting or overly generalized comments/stances and whathaveyou. Meanwhile, a nice civil first post can go unreplied to.
ANYWAY... The only relevant point being: We'd already gotten to having a reasonable discussion.Your insults and dismissals steered things away from such conversation (but brought us back around again, so... all good!).
